Overview

What changes when Claude can browse Coursera

Picking a course usually means a dozen tabs and a lot of skimming. With this connector, someone asks Claude for help learning a skill and Claude searches Coursera's catalog itself, then brings back ranked options with their level, duration and enrollment link. The directory sheet frames it around your organization's Coursera catalog.

Shortlist the right course. A product manager asks for an introduction to SQL; search_courses returns ranked courses with provider, rating, duration, level and an enrollment link.

Get a five-minute answer. For a narrow question like what a ROC curve shows, search_videos finds a short lesson and links straight to it inside its course.

Check what a course covers before committing. get_course_material lists the modules, lessons and item titles of one course, in order, once Claude has its ID.

What it will not do: Coursera's tool descriptions say these tools return catalog data only and do not teach, explain or run a practice session. The project search finds labs, but the building happens later on Coursera, not in the chat. The sheet also lists coursera_roleplay_practice, and while the listing talks about role-play scenarios, no source describes that tool. Nothing runs by itself either: no course suggestion lands in an inbox on a schedule. That is the job of an automation tool, covered from the Integrations hub.

Vocabulary

Five words before you start

The Claude terms you will meet on this page.

Connector
A link you set up once between Claude and an account you already have, so Claude can use it while it answers you.
Tool
One named action the connector makes available. Claude decides by itself which to call, and the directory sheet lists every name.
Authorization
The service's own sign-in page, where you give Claude the access it will use. Granted once per person, and revocable.
Approval
The confirmation Claude waits for before doing something that changes an account, shown in the conversation at that moment.
MCP
The standard all connectors share: it is what lets an assistant like Claude communicate with an outside service such as Coursera.
Connect

Connect Coursera to Claude in three steps

  1. 01

    Find Coursera in Claude

Open Claude's settings, then Customize and Connectors, and look for Coursera in the list. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, an Owner or Primary Owner enables it before members can each sign in.

  2. 02

    Start the connection

Click Connect on the Coursera row, then sign in to Coursera in the window Coursera opens. That window belongs to the service. If the link breaks later, Disconnect and connect again.

  3. 03

    Check the authorization screen

Read what the authorization screen lists before you accept it. The screen is Coursera's, not Claude's, and it is what defines what the access covers. Access granted there can be withdrawn later.

Tools

The 5 tools, split by what is known

Coursera gives Claude 5 tools: 4 that read your account, 0 that change something in it, and 1 no official source describes.

Four read Coursera's catalog, one has no published description. Names stay exactly as Claude shows them.

Catalog searches and a syllabus lookup that leave your account untouched.

search_courses

Returns a ranked list of Coursera courses on a topic, each with its title, provider, rating, duration, level and enrollment link. It is catalog data, meant for choosing what to take.

When it helps
a team lead wants three beginner options in project management to compare.
Watch out
it does not teach or explain the topic itself.

search_videos

Finds a short video clip or bite-sized lesson that answers one focused concept, with a deep link to that lesson inside its parent course.

When it helps
an analyst needs a quick explanation of SQL window functions before a meeting.

search_hands_on_learning

Lists guided projects and labs where a learner builds something concrete in a hosted environment, with provider, duration, level and enrollment link for each.

When it helps
a developer wants a lab where they actually deploy a small model.
Watch out
the building happens on Coursera afterwards, not in the conversation.

get_course_material

Brings back the full ordered curriculum of one course: modules, lessons and item titles. It needs a course ID that a previous course search returned.

When it helps
before enrolling, you want to see where a topic sits in the sequence.
Watch out
titles and structure only, no lecture content or transcripts.

Undocumented (1)

1 tool

This name is on the directory sheet, but no official text describes the tool itself. We do not infer anything from its name.

coursera_roleplay_practice

No official source describes this tool. The directory listing speaks of practice scenarios such as professional role plays, but ties that feature to no tool name, and the tool list Coursera's server published did not include it when we checked. Claude's general approval rule, below, is the only reference for it.

Approvals

What Claude asks before acting

By default, Claude stops and asks for confirmation before each action it takes on an account for someone.

The four documented Coursera tools only look things up, and no source describes a confirmation for any tool of this connector, so that default rule applies. On Team and Enterprise workspaces, owners decide whether members may let some actions run without a prompt each time, and they can limit what a connector does for the entire organization, a choice no member can undo alone. Claude works with the rights of the person who connected it and goes no further than they could.

Plans

Which Claude plans include it

No official source publishes plan availability connector by connector. That is a real hole in the catalog, not in our research.

Only the general rule is published: remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile, and on Team and Enterprise an Owner or Primary Owner opens a connector for the organization before members connect. The listing speaks of your organization's Coursera catalog, but that says nothing about Claude plans. Check the connector's sheet in the official directory, the only place showing its live state.

Limits

Where the connector stops

A connector is not an automation. Claude calls these tools while it answers, so nothing happens when a new course is published.

Only Coursera's own material describes this connector, through the tool descriptions its server publishes: no Claude help page covers it. By default the sheet exposes reading only, an observed floor rather than a guarantee, since an administrator can open actions that no public sheet lists. The directory badge is no security audit, and Anthropic states on every sheet that it neither picks a publisher's tools nor guarantees their behavior. For a connector from another field, see the Claude adobe-workfront connector.

FAQ

Questions about the Claude Coursera connector

01What can Claude do with the Coursera connector?
Claude can search Coursera's catalog for you from a conversation. It finds courses on a topic with their provider, rating, duration, level and enrollment link, finds short video lessons that answer a focused question, and lists guided projects and labs. It can also show the ordered syllabus of one course. A fifth tool, for role-play practice, is named on the directory sheet but described by no source, so this page says nothing about it.
02Can Claude enroll me or change anything in my Coursera account?
None of the documented tools writes anything: the four described ones search the catalog or read a syllabus and leave your account as it is. Enrolling happens through the links Claude returns, on Coursera itself. The fifth tool is undocumented, so this page makes no claim either way about it. The published list is an observed floor, not a permanent promise, since an administrator can open actions that appear on no public page.
03Does Claude ask before it uses Coursera?
By default, Claude asks for confirmation before each action it takes on an account for someone. No source describes a specific confirmation for any of the five Coursera tools, so that general rule is what applies. On Team and Enterprise workspaces, owners can let members skip the prompt for certain actions, or restrict what the connector may do across the whole organization. Members cannot lift that restriction from their own account.
04Which Claude plans is the Coursera connector available on?
No official source publishes plan availability connector by connector, and none of the 819 directory sheets shows it. The general rule is that remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile, with an Owner or Primary Owner enabling them first on Team and Enterprise. The connector's sheet in the official directory is the only place that shows its current state for your account, so check it there.
05Does Claude see my whole Coursera account?
Claude only works with the access granted to the person who connected it, never more. The four documented tools are described as returning catalog information: courses, short lessons, projects and a course's outline. No source says they read your enrollments, progress or certificates. If something is outside what your own Coursera account can reach, it stays outside Claude's reach too, and inside a workspace the organization's owners can narrow that further.
06Can Claude teach me a course through the connector?
Not with the documented tools. Coursera's own descriptions say the searches return catalog data only and do not teach, explain or run a practice session, and the syllabus tool returns titles without lecture content or transcripts. The directory listing mentions practice scenarios such as professional role plays, but no source ties that feature to a tool, and coursera_roleplay_practice is described nowhere, so this page cannot tell you what it does.
07Claude or an automation tool for Coursera?
They do different jobs, so choose by use. Claude with this connector helps in the moment: someone asks how to learn a skill and gets a shortlist of courses, a short lesson or a project to try. An automation tool runs on its own, for example to send a monthly learning digest to a team. Nothing in this connector schedules or sends anything, so recurring recommendations belong to automation, not to Claude.
