Claude Instacart connectorWhat Claude can do in your Instacart account.
The Claude Instacart connector exposes 2 tools. 1 reads a store's product inventory, 0 are documented as writing anything, and 1 is described nowhere. Below: what Claude can look up for a meal plan, what stays unclear about the cart, and who checks before a purchase.

What changes when Claude can search Instacart
Planning meals usually means writing a list, opening the Instacart app and hunting for each item store by store. With the connector, you tell Claude what you want to cook and it searches a retailer's inventory for the ingredients itself, so the list comes back with what is actually on the shelves near you.
From recipe to ingredients. Paste a lasagna recipe and ask what you need to buy: Claude calls search_products to look the items up across a retailer's inventory.
A week of dinners in one go. Ask for five weeknight meals for a family of four, then have Claude check which ingredients a nearby store carries before you commit to the menu.
Availability before you leave. The directory sheet presents checking product availability and finding nearby stores as part of what the connector is for.
What stays unclear matters as much. Instacart's documentation says its server can assemble and modify orders, adding, swapping or removing products, but it names no tool for that. The second listed tool, cart, has no description anywhere, so this page does not say what it does, nor whether Claude can place or pay for an order. Nothing runs by itself either: no weekly basket refills on its own, Claude acts only when you ask. Recurring, hands-off flows are an automation tool's job, a different one; the Integrations hub covers that side.
Five words before you connect
The Claude vocabulary this page relies on, in under a minute.
- Connector
- The link you set up once between Claude and an account you already have, so Claude can work in it while it answers you.
- Tool
- One named action the connector hands to Claude. Claude picks the ones it needs by itself; the directory sheet lists them by name.
- Authorization
- The service's own sign-in screen, where you grant the access Claude will use afterwards. Given once per person, and revocable.
- Approval
- The confirmation Claude waits for in the chat before it goes ahead with something that would change your account.
- MCP
- The open standard connectors are built on: it is what lets an assistant like Claude talk to an outside service such as Instacart.
Connect Instacart to Claude in three steps
- 01
Find Instacart in Claude
Open Claude's settings, go to Customize then Connectors, and look up Instacart in the list. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, an Owner or Primary Owner has to enable the connector before members can each sign in.
- 02
Start the connection
Click Connect on its row, then sign in to Instacart in the window the service opens itself. If the link breaks later, use Disconnect and connect again from the same row.
- 03
Read the authorization screen
Check the screen Instacart shows before you accept it. It belongs to the service, not to Claude, and it is what sets what the access covers. Access granted there can also be withdrawn later from the Instacart side.
The 2 tools, and what is known about each
Instacart gives Claude 2 tools: 1 that read your account, 0 that change something in it, and 1 no official source describes.
One tool reads, one is a name with no description. Tool names stay exactly as Claude shows them.
- 1 read
- 1 not documented
What Claude reads (1)
1 toolA tool that looks up products and changes nothing in your account.
search_products
Looks up items across a retailer's inventory so Claude can match a recipe or meal plan to what the store actually stocks.
Undocumented (1)
1 toolThe directory publishes this name and nothing more. No official text says what it does, so this page does not guess.
cart
No official source documents this tool. The directory sheet lists its name, Instacart's documentation names none of its tools, and no Claude page covers it, so its effect is not described here.
What Claude checks with you first
By default, Claude stops and asks before each action it takes on an account in your name. Anthropic's announcement of these everyday connectors adds that Claude is designed to check with you before it books or buys anything for you.
No source describes a confirmation specific to search_products or cart, so that general rule is what covers them. On Team and Enterprise workspaces, owners decide whether members may let some actions through without a prompt each time, and they can restrict what a connector may do across the organization; nobody overrides that from a personal account. Claude works with the rights of the person who signed in, and nothing beyond.
Which plans include it
None of the 819 sheets in the official directory shows plan availability. The answer, connector by connector, is published nowhere.
What is published is the general rule: remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile, and desktop extensions install on Claude Desktop. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner or Primary Owner opens a connector for the organization before members can each connect. For the live state, the Instacart sheet in the official directory is the place to look.
Where this connector stops
A connector is not an automation. Claude calls these tools while it answers you, so nothing reorders milk when you run out.
Everything here comes from the directory sheet, Instacart's partner documentation and Anthropic's launch post: no Claude help page covers this connector. The tool list is an observed floor, not a promise, and an administrator can open actions no public sheet shows. The partner badge is not a security audit, and Anthropic states on every sheet that it neither chooses a publisher's tools nor guarantees how they behave.
