Overview

What changes when a PDF needs reviewing, filling or cleaning up

On its own, Claude can parse a PDF's text but can't see the page. Nutrient PDF Editor renders the document inside the chat with the Nutrient Web Viewer, so you and Claude look at the same view. From there it can highlight, comment, fill a form or black out passages, and the edited file is saved on your computer.

Review while pointing at the right spot. open_document loads the file, read_text and search_exact_text find passages, and get_page_image shows the page as it actually looks. When Claude mentions page 4, you see page 4: you and Claude share the same viewer.

Mark up without leaving the conversation. create_annotation adds one of ten annotation types, while update_annotation and delete_annotation adjust or remove them from the file.

Fill in, then redact. update_form_field_values types, ticks and picks in a form's fields, from text boxes to drop-down lists. To redact, Claude marks the areas first, then apply_annotations applies them once you confirm in the chat.

What this connector doesn't do: work outside your own machine, or act when nobody asked it to, since every edit starts from a request in the chat. Batch-processing a stream of incoming files is a job for an automation platform, covered in the Integrations hub.

Vocabulary

The vocabulary, in one minute

Five notions that keep coming up with Nutrient PDF Editor.

Connector
What you add to Claude once to open up a service or a piece of software, here a PDF editor running on your machine.
Tool
One precise, named action the connector makes available to Claude. Claude decides by itself when to use it.
Authorization
The go-ahead given once, per person, for a connector to reach what it manages. It can be pulled back later.
Approval
The "yes" Claude waits for in the thread before a change, for example right before it applies a redaction.
MCP
The open standard linking assistants to outside software; Nutrient PDF Editor is built on top of it.
Connect

Add the Claude Nutrient PDF Editor connector in three steps

  1. 01

    Spot the editor

In Claude Desktop, open the settings, then Customize and Connectors, and search for Nutrient PDF Editor. In a Team or Enterprise organization, an Owner or Primary Owner needs to have switched it on beforehand.

  2. 02

    Add it

Start with Connect on its row and follow the screen that comes up. If the extension misbehaves later, removing it with Disconnect and adding it back fixes most cases.

  3. 03

    Check what you open up

Read the authorization screen carefully before you confirm: it describes the access you grant, and it, not Claude, draws the line. Withdrawing it goes through the same path.

Tools

The 16 tools in the Claude Nutrient PDF Editor connector

Nutrient PDF Editor gives Claude 16 tools: 11 that read your account, 5 that change something in it.

Eleven tools look at the document or steer the viewer, five change the file. Each tool keeps the exact name Claude displays.

  • 5 write

What Claude consults (11)

11 tools

Open, navigate, read and search, without changing what the PDF contains.

open_document

Loads a file into the viewer embedded in the conversation. The manifest lists the accepted formats: PDF, DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, PNG, JPG and TIFF, so a slide deck or a scan works too.

When it helps
you want Claude to go through a document with you while you both see the same pages.

Sourceraw.githubusercontent.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

close_document

Shuts the embedded viewer and resets the working session. The file on your disk stays exactly as it was: this tool acts on the display, not on the content.

When it helps
you are done with one document and want the viewer and its session cleared before the next.

Sourceraw.githubusercontent.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

get_view_state

Tells Claude which page is on screen, how many pages the document has and the path of the open file on your computer.

When it helps
you say "this paragraph here" and Claude needs to know which page is on screen before it answers.

Sourceraw.githubusercontent.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

set_view_state

Scrolls, jumps to a page or selects an area in the viewer. Only the display follows along: the file's text and annotations stay untouched.

When it helps
Claude has just quoted a passage and brings the view to that page so you read it in context.

Sourceraw.githubusercontent.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

search_exact_text

Looks for a precise string of text across the whole document or only on chosen pages, and returns every hit.

When it helps
you need every place where an exact word or phrase appears, across the file or on a few pages.
Watch out
matching is literal, so a synonym or a paraphrase won't come up.

Sourceraw.githubusercontent.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

read_document_information

Fetches three facts about the open file: its page count, its title and its permissions. A first look before any work on the content begins.

When it helps
before any form filling, you want to know how many pages the file has and what its permissions allow.

Sourceraw.githubusercontent.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

read_page_info

Returns the width, height and rotation of one given page, without changing anything in the file: it only reads the page's measurements.

When it helps
one page is rotated or sized differently from the rest, and an annotation has to land on it correctly.

Sourceraw.githubusercontent.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

get_page_image

Renders a page as a PNG image, along with its dimensions, so Claude sees the real layout and not just the extracted text.

When it helps
a page holds a table or a diagram whose meaning depends on its layout, not just its text.

Sourceraw.githubusercontent.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

read_text

Pulls the text out of the document, whole or over a page range counted from zero.

When it helps
you only need the text of a few pages, not the whole document.
Watch out
the first page carries index 0, not 1, so ranges shift by one compared with what you read on screen.

Sourceraw.githubusercontent.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

read_annotations

Lists the annotations already in the PDF, with optional filters by page and by type, so Claude knows what was marked before it got there.

When it helps
the PDF already carries comments or highlights and you want to see them before adding more.

Sourceraw.githubusercontent.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

read_form_fields

Collects the values already typed into the form's fields, across the document or on selected pages only, without filling in anything new.

When it helps
you want to see which fields of a form are already filled, and with what.

What Claude changes (5)

5 tools

Annotations, redactions and form fields, saved into the file itself.

create_annotation

Approval: see the rule

Adds one of the ten supported annotation types to the document, a highlight or a comment for instance, which you see appear in the viewer.

What Claude asks for
no source describes a confirmation for this addition, so the general rule applies.
When it helps
you ask Claude to highlight or comment on the passages it points out, right in the file.

Sourceraw.githubusercontent.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

update_annotation

Approval: see the rule

Patches an existing annotation, found by its ID, without recreating it from scratch.

What Claude asks for
nothing specific is documented for edits; see the default rule further down.
When it helps
an existing comment needs rewording, and you would rather patch it than start again.

Sourceraw.githubusercontent.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

delete_annotation

Approval: see the rule

Removes one specific annotation, identified by its ID, from the file.

What Claude asks for
the sources give deletion no dedicated confirmation; Claude's default behavior is what applies.
When it helps
one annotation should no longer be in the file.
Watch out
auto-save carries the deletion straight into the original file.

Sourceraw.githubusercontent.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

apply_annotations

Asks you first

Makes the redactions queued in the document final: the hidden content is gone from the file for good.

What Claude asks for
Nutrient's manifest gates this tool behind a confirmation in the chat.
When it helps
Claude has marked sensitive passages, such as SSNs, and you have checked the selection before it becomes final.

Sourceraw.githubusercontent.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

update_form_field_values

Approval: see the rule

Types into text fields and sets checkboxes, radio buttons, combo boxes and list boxes in a PDF form.

What Claude asks for
no dedicated confirmation is described for filling; the approvals rule below applies.
When it helps
completing a W-9 with the values from a file you provide, then saving it under a new name.

Approvals

What Claude asks before it acts

By default, Claude pauses and asks for your consent before an action it takes for you. Here, the publisher locks one step on top of that.

Nutrient's manifest treats apply_annotations differently: applying redactions goes through a confirmation in the chat. For the four other writing tools, no source describes a confirmation of their own, and the general rule applies. Claude never goes beyond your own rights. On Team and Enterprise, owners decide whether a member may let some actions through, and they can limit the connector for the whole organization.

Plans

Which plans include it

The official directory holds 819 sheets and none states availability by plan; for Nutrient PDF Editor, that detail doesn't exist anywhere either.

On Anthropic's side, the general rule is public: a desktop extension installs on Claude Desktop, available to all users, and on Team and Enterprise an Owner or Primary Owner opens it for the organization first. Nutrient adds a licensing condition, spelled out in the limits section. Only the Nutrient PDF Editor sheet in the directory shows the current state.

Limits

Where the Nutrient PDF Editor connector stops

A connector isn't an automation: Claude only edits a PDF during the conversation, never when a new file shows up.

The directory badge isn't a security audit, and Anthropic doesn't stand behind a publisher's tools. Only Nutrient documents this connector, through its repository and the extension manifest; no Claude help page covers it. Nutrient's two sources don't agree on the tool count, see below. For more sheets the team has taken apart, head to the Claude connectors hub. The limits below come from those two documents.

How many tools does the Nutrient PDF Editor connector expose?

What this page followsThe sheet and the manifest win, because they name every tool: this page covers 16 tools. The total on the project page matches no published list.

FAQ

Claude Nutrient PDF Editor connector: common questions

01What can Claude do with the Nutrient PDF Editor connector?
Claude can open a PDF in a viewer shown inside the conversation, read it, search it for exact text and see its pages as images. It can also create, edit or delete annotations, fill in form fields and apply redactions after you confirm. That adds up to sixteen tools: eleven consult the document or steer the viewer, five write to the file, and the file is saved directly on your computer, never shipped elsewhere according to the publisher.
02Can Claude change or erase content in my PDFs?
Yes. Five tools write to the file: creating, editing and deleting annotations, filling forms, and applying redactions, which removes the hidden content for good. Auto-save is on by default, so each change goes straight back into the original file. Keep a copy before a redaction session. The eleven other tools read or move the view without touching the content, and the redaction step itself waits for your explicit go-ahead first.
03Does Claude ask before applying a redaction?
Yes for redaction: Nutrient's manifest gates apply_annotations behind a confirmation in the chat, and the publisher describes a mark-then-apply flow once you agree. For annotations and form filling, no dedicated confirmation is documented, and Claude's default rule applies. On Team and Enterprise, owners can also restrict the connector for the whole organization. In every case, Claude stays within your own rights on the machine. Nothing else carries a documented confirmation.
04Which Claude plans is the Nutrient PDF Editor connector available on?
Nobody publishes it: neither Anthropic nor Nutrient gives plan availability for this connector, and all 819 directory sheets stay silent on the point. The general rule says desktop extensions install on Claude Desktop, open to all users, with an Owner or Primary Owner enabling them first on Team and Enterprise. Nutrient additionally ties its viewer's license to Claude Cowork. The directory sheet remains the reference for your own account, since nobody else publishes that detail.
05Are my PDFs sent to Nutrient?
Not according to the publisher: PDFs are read and written on your machine, and their contents never leave the local process. The viewer only downloads its code from Nutrient's CDN, which receives the usual metadata of a web request. Anonymous usage counters are reported under a shared key, with no content, file name or path. If you feed extracted text back into Claude, Claude's own data policies apply to that text.
06Why are my edits already in the original file?
Auto-save is the culprit: Nutrient switches it on by default. Each change, made by hand in the viewer or requested from Claude, is written to the original file right away, with no export step. To keep an untouched version, duplicate the PDF before opening it, or ask Claude to save the result under another name, as the publisher's filled-form example does. Mention it upfront in your request so nothing gets overwritten.
07Claude or an automation tool for Nutrient PDF Editor?
Not the same trade. Claude works with you on one specific document: reviewing a contract, highlighting figures, filling a form, redacting after approval. An automation tool runs on its own, on a schedule or an event, which this connector doesn't do: no PDF is processed when it lands in a folder. For an assisted review, the connector is enough; for unattended volume, an automation platform is the right fit. Both can coexist.
