Overview

Why bring Trellis into your litigation prep

Trellis collects U.S. state trial court data: dockets, rulings, verdicts and filings. The connector lets you query it from a conversation. Describe the case, the judge or opposing counsel, and Claude goes and fetches the matching records and numbers, so you're not clicking through search screens one filter at a time.

Find the comparable cases. The docket search filters by party, judge, firm, practice area, date or disposition, and a companion tool opens any case in full. Another runs full-text search across motions, orders and complaints.

Know your judge. The judge profile covers bio, appointing authority, career history and courtroom rules, while the analytics side adds motion grant rates and outcomes by matter type.

Put a number on the risk. Verdict search filters by award range, injury type, expert or attorney, and the verdict statistics turn that into averages, medians and extremes by practice area.

Now the limits. Trellis states that none of its tools create, modify or delete data, so the sheet is for looking things up. Some complaints aren't available as full text yet, and coverage varies by jurisdiction. And nothing runs on its own: no tool alerts you when a new case gets filed. That kind of monitoring is an automation tool's job, a different trade; the Integrations hub covers that side.

Vocabulary

The jargon, in one minute

Five terms you'll see while connecting Trellis.

Connector
The link you set up once between Claude and an account you already have, so Claude can work in it while it answers you.
Tool
One named thing a connector lets Claude do. Claude picks the ones it needs on its own, and the directory lists them by name.
Authorization
Trellis's own sign-in screen, where you hand Claude the access it will use. Granted once per person and withdrawn the same way.
Approval
The confirmation Claude waits for before finishing something that changes your account, shown in the chat when it matters.
MCP
The shared standard connectors are built on, which is what lets an assistant like Claude talk to an outside service.
Connect

Connect Trellis to Claude in three steps

  1. 01

    Find Trellis in Claude

In Claude's settings, open Customize, then Connectors, and look for Trellis. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, an Owner or Primary Owner switches the connector on first so each member can sign in.

  2. 02

    Start the connection

Hit Connect on its row and sign in through the window Trellis opens itself. You'll need a Trellis account, or to create one on the spot. If the link breaks, Disconnect and connect again.

  3. 03

    Read the authorization screen

Before you accept, read the authorization screen. It belongs to Trellis, not Claude, and it sets what the access covers. You can also withdraw that access later from your Trellis account.

Tools

All 24 tools, grouped by what they do

Trellis gives Claude 24 tools: 22 that read your account, 0 that change something in it, and 2 no official source describes.

Two groups: what Claude looks up, and the two tools no source describes. Tool names stay exactly as Claude shows them.

When it helps
at the start of a conversation that will use Trellis.
Watch out
it returns no court data on its own.

list_skills

Lists the ready-made research workflows Trellis offers Claude, each one under its own name, so you can see what's already packaged. Each skill can then be opened with get_skill.

When it helps
you want to see which workflows Trellis provides before you phrase a request.

Sourcesupport.trellis.law · October 1, 2026 ↗

get_skill

Fetches the full instructions for one named workflow. The name comes from the list that list_skills returns, and what comes back is a set of workflow instructions rather than court data.

When it helps
a skill from the list matches what you're researching.

Search-get_server_instructions

Supplies the usage rules for the search part of the server, the side that covers dockets, filings, rulings, judges and experts. They are separate from the general instructions returned by get_server_instructions.

When it helps
before a run of searches on dockets, filings, rulings, judges or experts.

Sourcesupport.trellis.law · October 1, 2026 ↗

Analytics-get_server_instructions

Passes along the usage rules for the analytics side, separate from search, which computes statistics on judges, firms and verdicts. Its counterpart for the search side is Search-get_server_instructions.

When it helps
before a question about judge, firm or verdict statistics.

Sourcesupport.trellis.law · October 1, 2026 ↗

Search-get_case_complaints

Retrieves the complaint for a case, the original plus any amended versions if you want them, with full text included.

When it helps
you want the complaint text, and any amended version, for one case.
Watch out
some dockets reach Trellis before the complaint: the case metadata is there, the complaint text isn't yet.

Sourcesupport.trellis.law · October 1, 2026 ↗

Search-search_documents

Runs full-text search across court filings such as motions, orders and complaints, with facets to narrow the results down. A single filing found this way opens with the single-filing tool, from its PDF ID.

When it helps
you're looking for filings that use a given term or argument.

Sourcesupport.trellis.law · October 1, 2026 ↗

Search-get_document

Pulls up a single filing by its PDF ID, with the document text included if you ask for it.

When it helps
a filings search returned a document you want to read in full.
Watch out
without the PDF ID, go through the filings search first.

Sourcesupport.trellis.law · October 1, 2026 ↗

Search-get_ruling

Returns the full text of a ruling and its metadata from the ruling ID, so you see the judge's reasoning in their own words. It returns the ruling itself, not the docket around it, which the full-case tool covers.

When it helps

When it helps
you need expert witnesses in a given state or specialty group.

Sourcesupport.trellis.law · October 1, 2026 ↗

Search-get_specialties

Returns the expert specialties Trellis recognizes, optionally filtered by group, which gives the valid labels for an expert search. The expert search can then use them.

When it helps
you need the exact specialty label before searching for experts.
Watch out
it lists labels, not experts.

Sourcesupport.trellis.law · October 1, 2026 ↗

Search-get_matter_types

Lists the valid sub-classifications of matters for a given practice area, so search filters match Trellis's own vocabulary. The list depends on the practice area you name.

you need the exact matter type label before filtering a search.

Sourcesupport.trellis.law · October 1, 2026 ↗

Search-search_parties

When it helps
you want the cases in which a given plaintiff or defendant appears.

Sourcesupport.trellis.law · October 1, 2026 ↗

Analytics-get_judge_analytics

When it helps
you want a judge's motion grant rates and outcomes by matter type.

Sourcesupport.trellis.law · October 1, 2026 ↗

you want the spread of awards for one verdict type or practice area.

Sourcesupport.trellis.law · October 1, 2026 ↗

Analytics-get_verdict_stats_by_attorney

When it helps
you want the firms with the highest total verdict awards on each side.

Undocumented (2)

2 tools

The directory publishes these two names. Trellis's technical documentation doesn't list them, and we won't guess their job from a name.

Search-search_rulings

This name is on the directory's tool list, but Trellis's technical documentation doesn't carry it in this form; it names a different tool instead. With no source behind it, this page gives it no role.

Watch out
whatever it does, the general approval rule covers it.

Search-search_attorneys

The directory publishes this name, and that's it. Trellis's technical documentation doesn't mention it and neither does any Claude page, so this page credits it with no capability of any kind.

Watch out
it falls under the general approval rule too.
Approvals

What Claude checks with you first

By default, Claude stops and asks before every action it takes on an account for you. With Trellis, the sheet doesn't expose any action of that kind.

The 22 described tools look things up: Trellis states that none of them create, modify or delete data, and no source describes a confirmation specific to any of them. The two undocumented tools fall under the default rule. On Team and Enterprise workspaces, owners can restrict what the connector may do across the org and decide whether a member can let some actions through without being asked again.

Plans

Which plans include it

None of the 819 sheets in the official directory shows plan availability, and nobody publishes it connector by connector.

Anthropic's general rule is that remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner or Primary Owner first switches the connector on for the org. On Trellis's side, usage depends on your account with the publisher, separately from Claude. For the current status, check the Trellis sheet in the official directory.

Limits

Where this connector stops

A connector isn't an automation. Claude calls these tools while it answers you, so nothing fires when a new ruling comes down.

Only Trellis documents this connector, in its technical documentation; neither Claude's help center nor Anthropic's docs mention it. Even with Trellis's statement, a sheet that shows only reading is an observed floor, not a guarantee, since an admin can open more than a public sheet lists. The partner badge isn't a security audit, and Anthropic notes on every sheet that it doesn't pick a publisher's tools or vouch for how they behave.

FAQ

Claude Trellis connector: common questions

01What can Claude do with the Claude Trellis connector?
Claude can search the U.S. state trial court database Trellis maintains, straight from the conversation. The documented tools cover searching dockets, filings and verdicts, reading a case, a complaint or a ruling, judge profiles and analytics, a firm's litigation profile, finding experts and parties, and ready-made research workflows called skills. Two tools on the sheet have no source describing them, so this page gives them no role. Trellis's documentation says get_server_instructions is the one to call first.
02Can Claude file or change anything through Trellis?
Nothing of the kind is described. Trellis states that none of its tools create, modify or delete data, and the 22 documented tools look things up; two others aren't documented anywhere. That holds for the public sheet as it stands today, and an admin could open actions that don't appear there, so it's an observed floor rather than a guarantee. Trellis adds that authentication uses OAuth 2.0 and that no API keys are exposed to the client.
03Does Claude ask before acting with Trellis?
By default, Claude asks for confirmation before any action it takes on an account on your behalf. With Trellis, no source describes a confirmation specific to any tool, and no documented tool changes anything, so the general rule covers everything, the two undocumented tools included. On Team and Enterprise, owners can also restrict what the connector is allowed to do for the whole organization. The official read-or-write label for each tool only shows in a connected account's settings.
04Which plans is the Trellis connector available on?
No official source publishes plan availability for an individual connector, and no directory sheet displays it. Anthropic's general rule is that remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile, with an Owner or Primary Owner enabling them first on Team and Enterprise. On the publisher's side, you need a Trellis account. For the current status, check the directory sheet. Trellis's own usage limits are a separate matter.
05Does Claude see my whole Trellis account?
No. Claude works with your rights and nothing more, so whatever your Trellis access doesn't open stays closed to Claude too. The documented tools query the court database. Trellis adds that the connector doesn't collect conversation data, doesn't query your chat history or memory, and reads no files beyond the parameters passed to its tools. In a company workspace, an owner can narrow the connector further. Authentication uses OAuth 2.0, per Trellis, and no API keys are exposed to the client.
06Why can't Claude find the complaint for a case?
Trellis gives two reasons. Some dockets enter its database before the complaint is available: the metadata, such as parties, filing date and docket number, is there, but the complaint text isn't accessible yet. On top of that, not every court makes complaints public, so full-text coverage varies by jurisdiction. The complaints tool returns the original complaint and, if you ask, the amended ones, with full text when it exists. The case record from the full-case tool still gives parties, events, verdict and classification.
07Claude or an automation tool for Trellis?
They do different jobs, so pick by use case. Claude fits when you want to dig into a case, a judge or a firm as a conversation unfolds, chaining searches and reads together. An automation tool fits when something has to happen without you, such as watching for every new filing against a client, because the connector never fires by itself and only acts while Claude is answering you. Per Trellis, its tools only look things up.
