Overview

What the Lakera AI Guardrails Zapier integration is for

The Lakera AI Guardrails Zapier integration sends a piece of text from another app to Lakera, which reads it for security and safety risks and hands back its verdict to the next steps. Lakera brings six actions and no trigger, so another tool always starts the Zap and Lakera acts as the gate in the middle.

Three results come up again and again. A clean AI pipeline: before a customer message reaches a chatbot or an AI step, Check for Prompt Injection and Check for Jailbreak Attempt flag the ones trying to bend the model. A privacy check: Detect PII spots names, emails or phone numbers in a form answer before it lands in a shared sheet. A moderation lane: Detect Toxicity and Analyze Sentiment sort hostile comments from normal ones so a human sees the ugly ones first. When you want injection, jailbreak, personal data and toxicity covered at once, Screen Content does it in one step.

What Zapier does not do here. Lakera cannot start a Zap, so it will never alert you on its own; something else must hand it the text. It has no search either, so you cannot look up past verdicts from Zapier. Every action takes one input, the Content field, which means the step before it must deliver plain text. And acting on the verdict (block, route, alert) is up to you: that takes a filter after the check, which turns the Zap into a multi-step one on a paid plan.

Vocabulary

Zapier words in one minute

A handful of Zapier terms show up on every page like this one. Here they are once, in plain English.

Zap
The automation you build on Zapier: one starting event, then one or more steps that run every time that event happens.
Trigger
The event in an app that starts the Zap. Once it is on, Zapier waits for it. Lakera has none, so another app plays this role.
Action
What the Zap does after it starts: the step that writes, sends or checks something for you. All six Lakera operations are actions.
Task
The unit Zapier bills. Each action that completes successfully is one task, and your plan is a monthly allowance of them.
Polling vs instant
A polling trigger is checked by Zapier at a fixed interval set by your plan. An instant trigger is pushed by the app as soon as the event happens.
Filter
A step that lets the Zap go on only when the data meets a condition you set. It is how a Lakera verdict actually blocks something.
Search step
A step that looks up something already stored in an app for later steps to use. Lakera offers no search.
Connection
Your account of an app, linked to Zapier once and reused by every step of every Zap that calls that app.
Cost

What a Lakera Zap costs

Lakera AI Guardrails is not a premium app, so it runs on the free Zapier plan. Zapier counts tasks, and only successful actions are billed.

  • Premium appNo, works on the free plan
  • Free plan100 tasks a month, unlimited Zaps
  • Free plan Zap size2 steps: one trigger, one action
  • One Lakera check1 task when it succeeds

The trigger of the starting app costs nothing, nor do the checks Zapier runs to look for new items. Each Lakera check that completes uses one task; a failed one is not counted. Chain Detect PII and Detect Toxicity and you pay two tasks per run, which is why Screen Content is often the cheaper choice. The free plan gives 100 tasks a month and unlimited Zaps, but only two steps per Zap. A filter that acts on the verdict, a second action or a search makes the Zap multi-step, and that needs a paid plan.

Connect

Connect Lakera AI Guardrails to Zapier

  1. 01

    Start from your Apps page

Open the Apps page of your Zapier account and click + Add connection. Have a Lakera account ready first, because Zapier only links an account that already exists.

  2. 02

    Find Lakera AI Guardrails

Search for Lakera AI Guardrails in the dialog, select it, and click Add connection. A new browser tab then opens where Lakera asks you to identify yourself.

  3. 03

    Sign in and grant access

Sign in to Lakera in that tab and allow Zapier to use the account. The connection is stored once, then offered to every Zap step that calls Lakera, so you do not repeat it.

First Zap

Your first Lakera AI Guardrails Zap

GoalScreen every incoming support email and pass on only the ones Lakera finds safe.

  1. 01

Create the Zap and pick a trigger

Start a new Zap and choose the app that receives the text. Here, a new email landing in the support inbox starts everything.

  2. 02

    Test the trigger

Connect the mailbox and run the test. Zapier pulls back the three most recent emails, so you can choose a real one and map its body later.

  3. 03

    Add Screen Content

Add a step, pick Lakera AI Guardrails and the Screen Content action, then map the email body into the Content field. Test it and read what Lakera returns.

  4. 04

Add a filter on the verdict

Click the plus icon, choose Filter, and set it on the field Lakera returned. With a filter the Zap is multi-step, so it needs a paid plan.

  5. 05

    Route, test, publish

Add the step that posts the safe message to your team, test it, then click Publish. Only emails that arrive after publishing are screened.

Actions

Lakera AI Guardrails actions on Zapier

Lakera AI Guardrails gives you 6 actions. For each one: what it does for you, when to reach for it, and what to watch out for.

1

Analyze Sentiment

Action

In Zapier“Analyze text sentiment to detect negative, hostile, or inappropriate emotional tone in content.”

Reads the tone of a text and tells you whether it comes across as negative, hostile or out of line, so later steps can treat angry messages differently.

When to use it
product reviews pour in from a form and the harsh ones should reach a manager before anyone replies.
2

Check for Jailbreak Attempt

Action

In Zapier“Detect jailbreak attempts where users try to bypass AI safety guidelines and restrictions.”

Looks for someone trying to talk an AI model out of its safety rules, and returns a verdict you can act on before the text reaches that model.

When to use it
a public chatbot feeds user questions into an AI step and you want the tricky ones stopped first.
3

Check for Prompt Injection

Action

In Zapier“Detect prompt injection attempts where users try to manipulate AI behavior through malicious prompts.”

Spots hidden instructions slipped into a text to make an AI step behave differently than you planned, for example a message telling the model to ignore its brief.

When to use it
incoming emails get summarized by AI and one of them could carry a planted command.
4

Detect PII

Action

In Zapier“Detect personally identifiable information (PII) such as names, emails, phone numbers, addresses, and other sensitive data.”

Flags personal details in a text, such as names, email addresses, phone numbers or postal addresses, before that text travels on to another tool.

When to use it
survey answers land in a shared spreadsheet and nobody should paste a customer's phone number there.
Watch out
detection gives you a signal; removing the data is a separate step you must add.
5

Detect Toxicity

Action

In Zapier“Detect toxic, offensive, or harmful language including hate speech, profanity, and abusive content.”

Catches insults, hate speech, swearing and abusive wording in a text, giving your Zap a clear reason to hold a message back.

When to use it
community posts go live on your site automatically and you want the offensive ones kept out.
6

Screen Content

Action

In Zapier“Screen text content for security threats including prompt injection, jailbreaks, PII, toxicity, and more using Lakera Guard.”

The all-in-one check: it runs a text through Lakera Guard for injection, jailbreak, personal data, toxicity and other threats in a single step.

When to use it
you want broad protection on one flow without chaining several Lakera steps.
Watch out
one step costs one task, against one task per check if you chain them.
When it breaks

When a Lakera Zap breaks

Zapier links no help article to Lakera AI Guardrails, and no app-specific limit is documented. The cases below are the general ones that hit a checking Zap like this.

Most failures sit around Lakera rather than inside it: the text that comes in, or what the Zap does with the verdict. The Zap history tells you which step stopped, and you can also see our Zapier troubleshooting page.

  • Empty Content field

Every Lakera action needs text in Content. If the trigger sends an email with only an attachment, or a blank form field, the check has nothing to read and the step fails.
  • Old messages are not checked

A Zap only reacts to what happens after you publish it. Messages already sitting in the inbox are never screened; reviewing that backlog is a separate job.
  • A Zap that feeds itself

If a later step writes the screened text back where the trigger is watching, the Zap starts again on its own output, and burns tasks very quickly.
  • Bulk imports held back

After a mass import, the starting app may hand over a huge batch at once. Zapier's flood protection can hold it, so not every item gets checked straight away.

FAQ

Lakera AI Guardrails Zapier integration: common questions

01Is the Lakera AI Guardrails Zapier integration free?
On the Zapier side, yes. Lakera AI Guardrails is not a premium app, so it works on the free plan with 100 tasks a month and unlimited Zaps. The limit is the size of each Zap: two steps, one trigger and one action. A Zap that only runs a check fits. As soon as you add a filter that acts on the verdict, or a second action, it becomes multi-step and needs a paid plan. Your Lakera account terms are separate from Zapier.
02How many tasks does a Lakera check use?
One task for each Lakera action that completes successfully. The trigger in the starting app is free, and so are the checks Zapier runs to look for new items. A failed action costs nothing. If you chain checks, each one is billed on its own: Detect PII followed by Detect Toxicity costs two tasks per run. Screen Content covers several risks in one step, so it is the leaner option when you count against 100 tasks.
03Does it screen text in real time?
Lakera has no trigger, so the speed depends on the app that starts the Zap. If that app offers an instant trigger, it pushes the event to Zapier straight away and the check runs immediately, on any plan. If its trigger is polling, Zapier looks for new items on a timer set by your plan: every 15 minutes on Free, 2 on Professional, 1 on Team and Enterprise. For anything security-related, prefer an instant trigger.
04What does connecting Lakera AI Guardrails require?
An existing Lakera account that you sign in to while adding the connection, and permission for Zapier to use it. Beyond that, each action asks for a single required field, Content, the text to examine. So the real prerequisite sits upstream: the app that starts your Zap has to provide that text in a readable form. If it only sends files or empty values, Lakera has nothing to check and the step fails.
05Does a Lakera action block a message on its own?
No. Each action returns a verdict, and nothing else happens unless you build it. To actually stop a risky message, add a filter after the check that only lets the Zap continue when the result is clean, or route flagged items to a person. That filter makes the Zap multi-step, which needs a paid plan. On the free plan, the Zap therefore ends at the check: the trigger, then Lakera, and nothing after it to act on the verdict.
06What if the Lakera operation you are after does not exist?
Then the Zapier integration does not offer it yet. It exposes six actions (sentiment, jailbreak, prompt injection, PII, toxicity and the combined Screen Content) with no trigger and no search. That means no Zap can start from Lakera, and no Zap can look up earlier verdicts. Anything outside those six checks has to be handled in Lakera itself, or with another automation tool that reaches it in a different way.
07Zapier, Make or n8n for Lakera AI Guardrails?
Decide on criteria, not on a ranking. Zapier offers a ready-made Lakera app with six actions, so a screening step drops into an existing Zap without code. First check whether Make or n8n have an equivalent. Then look at the number of steps your flow needs, since acting on a verdict requires a multi-step Zap, the volume of text you plan to check, and whether your team wants a guided editor or a more technical one.
