Overview

What the membermate Zapier integration actually does

membermate lets you set up your own member area with courses, memberships, a community and live calls. On Zapier it is a receiving end: three actions that create users and manage their access to products, started by events from your other tools. It cannot start a Zap itself.

Accounts opened by the sale itself. Create New User makes the account and grants product access in one step. Wire it to your checkout tool and a buyer gets in without anyone typing their details.

Upsells unlocked without manual work. Add Access to One or Many Products for an Existing User opens an extra product for a member who already has an account, found by email.

Access that closes with the payment. Remove Access to One or More Products for an Existing User withdraws access to the products you pick. Fed by a refund or a cancellation in your payment tool, nobody keeps content they no longer pay for.

What Zapier does not do here: membermate has no trigger, so nothing that happens inside membermate can start a Zap. There is no search either, and no action to delete a user or create a product. And no Zap catches up on sales made before it was switched on.

Vocabulary

Zapier words, in plain English

Seven terms come back across this page. Here they are once, then used without reminders.

Zap
The automation you build: one trigger, then one or more actions that run each time that trigger's event happens.
Trigger
The event in an app that starts the Zap. For membermate, it always comes from another tool, since membermate has none.
Action
What the Zap does after it starts: here, the step that creates a membermate user or changes their product access.
Task
The unit Zapier bills. One task is one action your Zap finished successfully, and your plan counts those.
Polling vs instant
A polling trigger is checked by Zapier on a timer. An instant trigger is reported by its app itself, so nothing waits.
Filter
A step that lets the Zap continue only when what arrived meets your condition, and stops it otherwise.
Connection
Your membermate account linked to Zapier once, then reused by every step that talks to membermate.
Cost

What it really costs

membermate is not reserved for paid plans: it works on the free plan.

  • Free plan100 tasks a month, unlimited two-step Zaps
  • Paid plans onlyFilters, second actions
  • This appAvailable on the free plan

The trigger in the other tool never costs a task. Each membermate action that succeeds counts once, so a three-action Zap uses three times what a one-action Zap does, and a failed action is not counted. The free plan gives 100 tasks a month and unlimited Zaps, each capped at two steps. A second action or a filter makes it a multi-step Zap, which needs a paid plan.

The grid below is how often Zapier checks a polling trigger on each plan. membermate has no trigger of its own, so the grid only matters if the trigger of the other tool is a polling one.

Connect

Connect your membermate account

  1. 01

    Open your connections

In Zapier, go to the Apps page of your account and click + Add connection. You need an account on membermate, plus read or write access on anything you do not own yourself and want the Zap to touch.

  2. 02

    Pick membermate

Type membermate in the search box of the dialog, select it, then click Add connection. A new tab opens on the membermate sign-in page, separate from your Zapier window.

  3. 03

    Sign in and allow access

Log in to membermate in that tab and grant Zapier access to the account. From then on, every Zap that writes into membermate can reuse that same connection.

First Zap

Your first Zap: unlock an extra product after a payment

GoalA payment in your payment tool gives an existing membermate user access to the product they bought, when it passes your filter.

  1. 01

    Create the Zap

Start a new Zap and choose your payment tool as the app that starts it, with its event for a new payment. membermate cannot start a Zap, so the trigger always lives elsewhere.

  2. 02

    Test the trigger

Test the trigger: Zapier brings back the three most recent items of that account, so you map on a real payment. Check that it carries the buyer's email.

  3. 03

    Add the filter

Click the plus icon, choose Filter and fill the three boxes: the field to look at, the rule, the value. A text rule only works on text, so pick the type that matches.

  4. 04

    Add membermate

Add the membermate action Add Access to One or Many Products for an Existing User. Map the buyer's email to E-mail address and pick the Product(s) to unlock.

  5. 05

    Test, then publish

Run each step once and read what came back. Then click Publish. With the filter, this is a multi-step Zap, so it needs a paid plan.

Actions

membermate actions

membermate gives you 3 actions. For each one: what it does for you, when to reach for it, and what to watch out for.

1

Create New User (And Optionally Grant Access to a Product)

Action

In Zapier“Create a new user / member in your memberarea. Additionally you can grant access to one or many products. If there already is a user with the given email address, no new account will be created, but access to the product(s) will be granted to the existing account.”

Creates a user in your membermate member area from an E-mail address and a First name, both required, and can grant access to one or several products in the same step. If a user with that email already exists, no second account is made: the existing one simply receives the product access.

When to use it
a sale recorded in another tool should open the account and unlock what was bought.
Watch out
check at the test which products the field offers before relying on it.
2

Add Access to One or Many Products for an Existing User

Action

In Zapier“Grant an existing user (by email) access to a product you created in your member area.”

Gives an existing user, identified by email, access to one or more products you created in your member area. Both the E-mail address and the Product(s) are required, and the user gets access to every product you select.

When to use it
a customer who already has an account buys an extra course or upgrades, and the new product should unlock without touching their account.
Watch out
it works on existing users; for someone new, Create New User does both jobs at once.
3

Remove Access to One or More Products for an Existing User

Action

In Zapier“Remove the access to one or more products for a user (by email).”

Takes away a user's access to one or more products, found by email. If the user has access to the products you select, that access is removed; the E-mail address and the Products are both required.

When to use it
a refund or a cancelled subscription in your payment tool should close the matching content in membermate.
Watch out
its description covers product access only and says nothing about deleting the account, so check at the test what the user keeps.
When it breaks

When it breaks

Zapier links no help article to membermate, so the cases below come from Zapier's general limits and from what the actions say about themselves.

The tricky cases here are Zaps that run on the wrong person or the wrong product. Check these four before publishing; for anything else, see our Zapier troubleshooting page.

  • Past sales are not replayed

A Zap only reacts to events after it is switched on. Buyers from before get no account or access from it; handling them is a separate job.
  • An existing email gets access, not an account

Create New User does not make a second account for an email already in membermate. It grants the product access to the existing user instead.
  • A sudden flood is held back

After a bulk import in the other tool, a trigger that suddenly sends a huge batch can be held back by Zapier's flood protection.
  • A Zap that restarts itself

As a general precaution, a Zap that writes into the place its own trigger watches can set itself off again. With membermate, that can only happen through the other tool.

FAQ

membermate Zapier FAQ

01Is the membermate Zapier integration free?
Yes. membermate is not reserved for paid plans, so it runs on Zapier's free plan. That plan gives 100 tasks a month and as many Zaps as you want, each limited to two steps: one trigger and one action. A sale in your checkout tool that creates the membermate user fits within it. A filter or a second action makes the Zap multi-step, and that needs a paid plan, since the free plan stops at two steps.
02How many tasks does a membermate Zap use?
One task per action that succeeds. The trigger in the other tool is free. A Zap that creates a membermate user for each sale uses one task per sale. Since Create New User can grant product access in the same step, it does two jobs for the price of one task. Adding Add Access to One or Many Products as a second action would cost two tasks for the same sale. A failed action is not counted.
03Is the membermate integration real-time?
It depends on the other tool, because membermate has no trigger. The Zap starts on an event in your checkout, form or payment tool, and that trigger is either instant or polling. If it is instant, the membermate action runs right after the event, on every plan. If it is polling, Zapier checks on your plan's interval: every 15 minutes on Free, 2 on Professional, 1 on Team and Enterprise. Check the trigger of the other app.
04What does connecting membermate to Zapier require?
An account on membermate, plus read or write access on anything you do not own yourself and want the Zap to touch. In Zapier, open the Apps page, click + Add connection, search membermate, click Add connection, sign in in the tab that opens and grant access. The product fields are required in two actions, so check at the test which products of your member area they offer. Once linked, the connection serves every Zap that writes into membermate.
05What happens when Create New User meets an email that already exists?
No duplicate is created. If a user with that email address is already in your membermate member area, the action skips the account creation and grants the selected products to the existing user. That makes Create New User safe to use on every sale, even for returning buyers. If you only ever deal with existing users, Add Access to One or Many Products for an Existing User does the access part on its own.
06What if the membermate operation is missing?
Check the membermate page on Zapier first: it shows the current list, three actions at the time of writing, with no trigger and no search. There is no action to delete a user or create a product, so those stay outside Zapier. If the start of your Zap is the problem, remember that the trigger always comes from another tool: a checkout, a form, a payment tool or a spreadsheet can all start a Zap that ends in membermate.
07Zapier, Make or n8n for membermate?
Choose on criteria, not on a ranking. Coverage first: on Zapier, membermate offers three actions and no trigger, so check what the other platform offers for it, especially on the trigger side. Then the starting tool: since every Zap begins elsewhere, the platform that best covers your checkout or payment tool matters most. Finally volume: Zapier bills each successful action as a task, so count your sales before choosing a plan.
