The best generative AI development company for your project in 2026: 10 firms compared

We compared generative AI development companies on published prices, named results, Clutch reviews and what happens after launch.

The short answer, by situation. You are building a full product and want a price range before the first call: Appinventiv ($100K to $500K per project, on its site). You want a small, priced first step: Softblues in London, with discovery from £2,000. Your assistant faces your customers: Master of Code Global. Your agent must be accurate on real data: Vstorm. You run a large program with many engineers: N-iX.

We compared 23 generative AI development companies and consulting firms on what they publish: prices, named results, Clutch reviews, methods and support after launch. Generative AI here means software that writes, answers or acts: assistants, chatbots, agents, RAG systems (assistants that answer from your documents) and fine-tuned models. Agencies that make ads or images with AI are a different job and are not ranked. The order follows our scores, and a sponsored spot is always labeled "Sponsored".

The ranking is editorial: a sponsored spot is always labeled "Sponsored", with its limits written, and no affiliate link changes a score. Hack'celeration is not ranked. The scores are ours, averaged over five criteria; the Clutch ratings quoted are each firm's own.

At a glance

Generative AI development companies: budget, rate, score

Minimum budgets and hourly rates come from each firm's Clutch profile, in US dollars; Appinventiv and Softblues also print prices on their own sites. The minimum budget is the smallest project a firm accepts, so it tells you fastest who is within reach. The last column says who each firm suits and where its team works: most of these teams deliver from outside the US, so check time zones before the rate.

Each overall score is the average of five scores out of 5. It rewards public proof (named results, reviews, published prices, a support plan), not the fit with your project. At equal scores, track record decides, then client reviews.

1
Best for a large gen AI product with a known budget

Appinventiv

4.1/5

Appinventiv started in 2015 and lists offices in New York, Emeryville (California), Dubai, London, Calgary, Queensland and two cities in India. Its gen AI page counts more than 1,600 professionals. It builds and fine-tunes models (retrains a model on your data), integrates them into apps, and maintains them after launch.

It prints a price for generative AI work on its own site: projects range from $100K to $500K, with an MVP (a first version you can put in front of users) in 3 to 6 months, and enterprise builds in 12 months or more.

Standout features
  • Gurushala: question creation cycles 10x faster
  • Tootle: user engagement up 35%
  • 4.6 out of 5 from 90 reviews on Clutch
+Pros
  • ✓A published price range for gen AI projects
  • ✓Low hourly rate ($25-49) for a firm of this size
  • ✓Monitoring, upgrades and fine-tuning after launch
−Cons
  • ✗$50,000 minimum on Clutch rules out small pilots
  • ✗Most engineers work from India: check overlap with your time zone
Verdict

Our first pick when you already know you are building a product, not testing an idea, and want a price range in writing. For a small first test, Softblues or Vstorm start much lower.

2
Best for a first gen AI project in a mid-market firm

Softblues

4.1/5

Softblues is a London-based AI practice, also listed in New York and Toronto on Clutch, with 10 to 49 people. It works in two routes. AI adoption: pick a platform (Claude, Microsoft 365 Copilot, ChatGPT or Gemini), roll it out with governance and train your teams. AI automation: agents, MCP connectors (the standard way to plug an AI assistant into your tools), voice agents and document automation for one process.

It prints its entry prices: £2,000 to £5,000 for mapping and strategy, £7,000 to £12,000 for a full discovery with a business case. The proposal that follows sets the build price.

Standout features
  • Key Capital: 35 of 45 staff use Claude several times a week after nine weekly sessions
  • SofiaHR: candidate assessment from 2-3 hours to minutes, in beta with 10 clients
  • 5.0 out of 5 from 32 Clutch reviews
+Pros
  • ✓Discovery prices on its site, in pounds
  • ✓A named owner and a monthly review after launch
  • ✓It shows unfinished work too (a pilot designed, a proposal), which helps you judge
−Cons
  • ✗A small team: not built for a company-wide program across countries
  • ✗Its OpenAI, Google Cloud and Claude partner badges count for nothing in its score: ask which level it holds with each vendor
Verdict

The best entry point here if you want a priced first step and someone who owns the result after launch. For a large custom product, Appinventiv or Master of Code have the bench.

5
Best for AI agents that must work on real data

Vstorm

3.9/5

Vstorm has built AI systems since 2017 from Wrocław, Poland, with 25+ AI engineers (10 to 49 people on Clutch). It calls itself an agentic AI engineering company: agents, RAG (an assistant that answers from your own documents), evaluation, observability and LLMOps (keeping models monitored and costed in production). It also rescues stalled pilots and hardens code written fast with AI tools.

Its formats are public: advisory in 4 to 8 weeks, engineering billed monthly, and a full program of 3 months or more that ends with a handover to your team.

Standout features
  • Mixam: conversion to a final sale from about 20% to about 40%
  • Synera: workflow creation from up to 1 hour to about 2 minutes
  • Schmitt-Thompson: accuracy from 42% (raw model) to 98% on a public 50-scenario benchmark
+Pros
  • ✓Five named agent projects, three of them measured
  • ✓Evaluation is part of the job, not an extra
  • ✓Your team owns what runs at the end
−Cons
  • ✗No prices on its site
  • ✗A small team, mostly in Poland

Step by step

How to choose your generative AI development company, step by step

The questions we used to compare these firms, turned into steps you can run yourself, whether you have $10,000 or $500,000.

01

Name the job, not the model

Before the call

Write one sentence: who uses the tool, on what data, and what number says it worked (minutes saved per ticket, share of answers with no human fix, conversion). "We want a ChatGPT for our company" is not a brief. "Our 12 support agents spend 40% of their time searching policies" is.

Check first whether an off-the-shelf assistant is enough. Our reviews of ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini show what the business plans already do with your files. If a team plan covers 80% of the need, you need training, not a build: see our ChatGPT training ranking.

02

Pick the right kind of firm

Shortlist

Three kinds of firms answer this query. Product studios build a full app around a model (Appinventiv, Master of Code). Agent and RAG specialists make the model reliable on your data (Vstorm, deepsense.ai). Large engineering firms add gen AI to a bigger program (N-iX, Itransition, EffectiveSoft).

If the job is mostly moving data between tools with one AI step, a workflow agency fits better: our n8n agency ranking covers them. For a broader AI roadmap, see our AI agency ranking.

03

Ask for one case like yours, with a name

First call

A number with no client name cannot be checked. In this ranking, four of the ten firms show gen AI results without naming the client. That is often a confidentiality clause, not a lie, but ask for a reference call with a client in your sector.

Ask what the number measured and over what period. "Accuracy from 42% to 98%" (Vstorm) means something only if you know the test set: 50 scenarios, public, in that case.

04

Agree the test before the build

Proposal

The most common failure is a demo that works on ten questions and breaks on the hundredth. Ask each firm how it will evaluate the system: a set of real questions with expected answers, a pass rate agreed before building, and who writes that set (you should).

Firms that sell evaluation as part of the job (Vstorm) or a fixed-budget pilot (Master of Code, Softblues' paid discovery) let you stop cheaply if the gain is not there.

05

Keep what you pay for

Contract

Write in the contract that you own the code, the prompts, the evaluation sets, any fine-tuned model weights and the vector database (the index of your documents). Ask that model and cloud accounts sit in your name, not the agency's.

Ask which model providers they use and whether you can switch. A system built on one provider's tools only is harder to move when prices change.

06

Settle the data question early

Contract

Ask where your data goes: which model provider, which region, whether it is used for training, and whether personal data is masked before it leaves your systems. Regulated sectors (health, finance, public) will need this in writing before any pilot.

07

Budget the run, not just the build

Before signing

A gen AI system has running costs: model usage billed per token (a unit of text), hosting, monitoring and prompt updates when the model changes. Ask for a monthly running estimate at your expected volume, and what support looks like after launch.

Nine of the ten firms describe a follow-up after launch (Vstorm sells it as LLMOps); deepsense.ai has none on its site, so ask it in writing.

Pricing guide

What a generative AI development company costs, with real numbers

Few firms print their own prices, so we gathered what they publish and what Clutch lists. A paid discovery runs from £2,000; a gen AI product from $100,000; most firms here will not start under $10,000 to $25,000.

Discovery and strategy

Softblues prices mapping and strategy at £2,000 to £5,000, and a full discovery with a business case at £7,000 to £12,000. N-iX runs up to six workshops before any prototype, priced on request. A paid discovery is worth it: it gives you a written scope you can send to other firms.

Pilot or proof of value

Master of Code sells a working Proof of Value in 30 days on a fixed budget. N-iX prototypes in 2 to 8 weeks. Clutch minimums put the entry ticket at $10,000 (Vstorm, Softblues, LeewayHertz) to $25,000 (Master of Code, Itransition, deepsense.ai, EffectiveSoft).

A full gen AI product

Appinventiv prints a range for a full build on its site: $100K to $500K, with an MVP in 3 to 6 months and enterprise builds in 12 months or more. N-iX does not take projects under $100,000 on Clutch.

Hourly rates

From $25-49 an hour (Appinventiv, Itransition, teams mostly in India and Eastern Europe) to $100-149 (Vstorm, deepsense.ai, senior AI engineers in Poland). A lower rate often means more hours: compare the total estimate for the same scope, not the rate.

Running costs

Model usage, hosting and monitoring continue after launch. Vstorm sells LLMOps (monitoring, evaluations, cost tracking) as a separate service; N-iX bills ongoing optimization on demand. Ask for the monthly figure at your volume before you sign.

Training instead of a build

If your teams only need to use ChatGPT, Claude or Copilot well, a training program costs far less than a build. Softblues' Key Capital rollout took nine weekly sessions. Our AI training ranking compares the options.

  • The minimum project size, asked on the first call
  • A named reference in your sector
  • An evaluation set and a pass rate agreed before the build
  • Ownership of code, prompts, evaluation sets and model weights in the contract
  • A monthly running cost estimate at your volume
FAQ

Generative AI development companies: your questions answered

  • What does a generative AI development company do?

It builds software on top of large language models (the models behind ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini): assistants, chatbots, agents that take actions, RAG systems that answer from your documents, and models fine-tuned on your data. It also connects them to your tools and keeps them running. An agency that only makes images or ads with AI does a different job.

  • How much does it cost to hire a generative AI development company?

Expect £2,000 to £12,000 for a paid discovery (Softblues), $10,000 to $25,000 as the usual minimum for a pilot (Clutch minimums of the firms ranked here), and $100K to $500K for a full product (Appinventiv's published range). Hourly rates run from $25-49 to $100-149.

  • How long does a generative AI project take?

A pilot takes 30 days to 8 weeks (Master of Code's 30-day Proof of Value, N-iX's 2 to 8-week prototyping). An MVP takes 3 to 6 months, and an enterprise build 12 months or more (Appinventiv). Agree on the pilot's pass rate before you commit to the build.

  • What should I ask a generative AI company before signing?

Ask for one named case like yours, how they will evaluate the system before launch, which model providers they use, where your data goes, who owns the code, prompts and model weights, and what the monthly running cost will be at your volume. A firm that cannot answer the evaluation question is not ready to ship to production.

  • Should I hire a gen AI consulting firm or build in-house?

Hire a firm for the first one or two systems if you have no ML engineers, then build in-house once you know what works. Ask for a handover in the contract: Vstorm ends each engagement with your team owning what runs, and deepsense.ai builds for internal ownership.

  • Is ChatGPT Enterprise enough, or do I need a custom build?

Start with the business plan of an assistant if the job is writing, summarizing or searching your files. You need a custom build when the AI must act in your systems, follow strict rules, or answer customers under your brand. Our best AI agents page shows what ready-made agents already do.

  • How do I avoid a pilot that never reaches production?

Choose one process with a number, agree the test set and pass rate before building, budget the run (monitoring, model costs) from day one, and name the person on your side who owns the result. Firms that publish a follow-up after launch make this easier.

  • Why is a firm I know not in this ranking?

We ranked the firms whose gen AI work, reviews and terms we could read. Firms we compared but did not rank include Azilen, a product engineering generalist (AI, IoT, blockchain, fintech) whose generative AI service page returns an error, Kanerika, Hakkoda and AI Superior. Articul8 is a software platform, not a services firm. RNDpoint, which publishes one of the lists in the top results, focuses on banking and fintech software.
