What is the best AI translation tool in 2026?
DeepL for faithful translation, ChatGPT or Claude for copy that has to sound local, Google Translate for free documents. Individual plans run from $4.99 (Gemini) to $20 a month (ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro), and DeepL Individual costs €7.49.
Translating with AI in 2026 means choosing between two kinds of tools. Translation engines (DeepL, Google Translate, Systran) are fast and return your file in its original layout. AI assistants (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Mistral) translate too, but their real strength is adapting tone, length and wording for a market.
Short answer: DeepL is still the best pick for straight translation of text and documents, as long as you pay when the content is confidential, because the free plan trains on your text. ChatGPT and Claude win when a landing page or an email has to read as if it was written locally. Google Translate stays the easiest free option for a PDF up to 300 pages.

Rank follows what this page is about: translation quality, document handling and what happens to your text. The score is the tool's site-wide score, taken from its full review when we have one. That's why DeepL ranks first with a 3.8.

Prices from each vendor's official pricing page in 2026. DeepL showed us euro pricing only, so its prices stay in euros. Weglot bills in euros (€15/€29/€79 before VAT); its page shows about $17/$32/$87 as an estimate. ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini scores come from their full reviews.

How we compared and ranked
Most top-ranking lists on this question are written by translation vendors that rank themselves first, or quote DeepL plans that no longer exist. Few say what the free plans actually allow, and none explain which plans train on your text.
We read every official pricing page, each vendor's terms on how your text is used, and user feedback from Trustpilot, Reddit and language-learning forums. We compared the tools without opening accounts with the vendors. Rank reflects fitness for translation; the overall score stays the tool's score across the site.
Microsoft Translator and Reverso, cited by several lists, are left out: we found no consumer pricing grid for Microsoft Translator, and Reverso prices in euros only. Smartling, Smartcat and Lokalise are professional platforms, covered in our translation software ranking.

DeepL
DeepL is a German translation engine, and it's still the first name Reddit users and 2026 comparisons bring up. On European languages its output reads the most natural, even if ChatGPT and Claude have closed much of the gap. It translates Word, PowerPoint and PDF files and gives them back in the same layout.
The free plan covers 50,000 characters a month, one 5 MB file and a 5-entry glossary. The catch is privacy: free-plan text is used to train DeepL's models, and its policy bans personal data there. On Pro, your text is deleted after processing.
DeepL's site served us euro prices whatever the language: Individual €7.49 a month (300,000 characters, 3 files), Team €24.99 per user (1 million characters, 20 files, 5 glossaries of 1,000 entries), Business €49.99 (fair-use unlimited, 100 files of 100 MB). Those are annual prices with a 16% discount; no monthly price is shown. DeepL's public page shows euros only, so check the currency at checkout before you pay. On Trustpilot DeepL sits at 2.4 out of 5 across 788 reviews, with complaints about auto-renewal and a translator that now "interprets" more than it translates.
- Document layout preserved
- Pro: text deleted, never used for training
- Glossaries to lock your terminology
- ✓Most natural output in European languages
- ✓Free plan without a card
- ✓Cheapest paid plan in this ranking
- ✗Free plan trains on your text
- ✗One file a month on Free
- ✗Annual billing only shown, renewal complaints
The best tool for translation, full stop. Go Pro as soon as client or internal text is involved, and turn off auto-renew during the trial if you're unsure.
ChatGPT
ChatGPT isn't a translation engine, and that's the point. Ask for "Spanish for small-business owners in Mexico, casual tone, 20% shorter" and you get it. DeepL can't change register or trim a paragraph. For ads, landing pages and social posts, that flexibility is usually what you need.
Users flag the downside: on less common language pairs the output can sound "too formal and robotic", and the model sometimes fixes brand names it thinks are typos. Give it context, an example of the tone you want and a do-not-translate list.
Score and prices come from our full review: Go at $8, Plus at $20 a month. Free and Go show ads. On personal accounts your chats can train the models by default; switch off "Improve the model for everyone" under Data Controls before pasting client text.
- Adapts tone, length and wording
- Translates and rewrites in one request
- Six plans from Free to Pro
- ✓Most flexible for marketing localization
- ✓Go at $8 covers regular use
- ✓One tool to translate, summarize and write
- ✗Can sound stiff on some language pairs
- ✗No guaranteed document layout
- ✗Training on by default for personal accounts
The best pick when a translation must read like local copy. For a contract or a formatted file, stick with DeepL.
Claude
Claude, from Anthropic, is the assistant writers reach for on long text. In a 2026 comparison a developer published across Dutch, German, French, Spanish and Polish, Claude and GPT-5 came close to DeepL out of English. For translation, its edge is consistency: it keeps a term stable over long files and follows detailed style instructions.
Pro costs $20 a month or $17 billed annually; Max starts at $100. The 4.2 score comes from our review. The limit is usage: on Pro, the session cap arrives quickly when you push large files through. On privacy, Anthropic trains on your chats only if you opt in, and Team and Enterprise are excluded.
- Consistent terminology over long documents
- Follows detailed style guides
- Training only if you opt in
- ✓Close to DeepL out of English
- ✓Strong at translate-and-rewrite jobs
- ✓Projects keep your glossary between sessions
- ✗Session limits hit fast on Pro
- ✗No file returned in its original layout
- ✗No built-in glossary tool like DeepL's
The right choice for reports, white papers and terms of service where wording must stay consistent. For a slide deck to hand back as-is, DeepL is better.
Google Translate
Google Translate is the most used translator, and for free documents it's the most generous: Word, PDF, PowerPoint and Excel files up to 10 MB, PDFs up to 300 pages, no monthly cap shown. Document translation works on desktop only. Beyond that, Google points you to its paid Cloud Translation API.
The comparisons we read place it behind DeepL on natural phrasing, and it has no glossary or tone control. Its help page doesn't spell out what happens to pasted text, so keep sensitive documents elsewhere.
- 10 MB files and 300-page PDFs for free
- Word, PDF, PowerPoint, Excel
- No paid account needed
- ✓Most generous free file limits
- ✓Widest language list in this ranking
- ✓Nothing to install
- ✗Less natural than DeepL
- ✗No glossary or tone control
- ✗Documents on desktop only
Keep it bookmarked for understanding documents at no cost. To publish a translation, use DeepL or an assistant, then get it reviewed.
Gemini
Gemini translates the way ChatGPT and Claude do: paste text, give an instruction, get an adapted version. Its draw is price. Google AI Plus costs $4.99 a month, a quarter of ChatGPT Plus. One Reddit user reports good results in Arabic, as long as the prompt is long and includes examples.
The limits come from our 4.0 review: the free tier runs a lightweight model, quotas refill every 5 hours, and chats train Google's models by default unless you use a Workspace work account.
- Google AI Plus at $4.99
- Built into Google's apps
- Handles rarer languages with examples
- ✓Cheapest paid assistant here
- ✓Handy if you live in Gmail and Docs
- ✓Follows long prompts well
- ✗Free tier limited to a lightweight model
- ✗Training on by default outside Workspace
- ✗Quotas refill every 5 hours
Best value if you want an assistant that translates and rewrites. Use a Workspace account for company text.
Mistral Vibe (formerly Le Chat)
Paris-based Mistral AI has renamed Le Chat: its pricing page now calls the assistant Mistral Vibe. For translation it works like the others, and its grid lists an opt-out from model training. The free plan limits messages and uploads. Pro is $14.99 a month before tax, and the student plan $5.99 for up to 12 months.
Its 3.9 score comes from our conversational AI assistants ranking. The downside: far less public feedback on its translation quality than ChatGPT or DeepL.
- European vendor
- Opt-out from model training
- Student plan at $5.99
- ✓Pro cheaper than ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro
- ✓Strong in French, the vendor's home language
- ✓Team plan for small groups
- ✗Little public feedback on translation
- ✗Limited uploads on Free
- ✗No file returned in its original layout
A good budget assistant for translation, especially for students. For a formatted document, use a translation engine.
Systran Translate Pro
Systran is one of the oldest machine-translation vendors. Translate Pro is built for teams: Pro Plus includes 1 million characters a month (about 600 pages) for up to 20 users; Pro Premium includes 3 million (about 2,000 pages) for up to 50 users, with full data privacy and connectors for computer-assisted translation tools.
The drawbacks: no free plan, only a trial with no stated length; a page that claims 55 languages but lists 50 in its table; no hosting location stated; and no recent user reviews we could find.
- 1 million characters a month on Pro Plus
- Full data privacy on Pro Premium
- Connectors for translation tools
- ✓High volume at a fixed per-user price
- ✓Long track record in machine translation
- ✓Up to 50 users
- ✗No free plan
- ✗Hosting location not stated
- ✗No public user reviews found
Worth a look for a team outgrowing DeepL Team. Ask where your data is hosted before you sign.
Weglot
Weglot doesn't translate text you paste: it translates your whole site, publishes each language at its own URL and lets you edit every sentence. It's the right tool when the translation has to live online and stay in sync as pages change.
Watch the word count: it's a total for your site, not a monthly allowance. Count every word on the site and multiply by the number of languages before picking a plan. Its 3.9 score comes from our translation software ranking.
- Full site translation, one URL per language
- Sentence-level manual edits
- WordPress, Shopify, Webflow
- ✓Live fast without a developer
- ✓Free plan to try it
- ✓Your team can edit translations
- ✗Word quota is a total, not monthly
- ✗Price climbs with each language
- ✗Overkill for a single document
The obvious pick for a multilingual site with no dev project. For everything else, an engine or an assistant will do.
What the free plans really cover
Free limits come in different units: characters, words, files, messages. Here's what they mean in practice.
For text
For documents
When to pay
- Estimate your monthly volume in characters or words.
- Check the size and format of your heaviest files.
- Read the training line of the plan before pasting client text.
- Note the trial end date and renewal terms.
Is your text training the AI?
The question most lists skip, and the one that matters most for a business. The answer depends on the plan, not just the tool.
DeepL
ChatGPT and Gemini
Claude and Mistral
- Never paste personal data into a free plan.
- Turn training off before your first client text.
- For sensitive files, use DeepL Pro or a team plan.
Six habits for clean AI translation
What people who translate with AI every week keep repeating, whatever the tool.
The tips
Paste a do-not-translate list
QualityAssistants sometimes "fix" a brand or product name. Start the chat with a short list: proper nouns, industry terms and their required translation. DeepL's glossary does the same (5 entries free).
- Where
- DeepL glossary, ChatGPT or Claude prompt
Pay for review, not full translation
BudgetOne business on Reddit describes its setup: DeepL and ChatGPT for the first draft, then native freelancers hired only to review. Review costs far less than full translation and catches stiff phrasing.
- For
- Published copy, contracts
Turn off DeepL auto-renew on day one
PricingDeepL's 30-day trial is one per customer and rolls into an annual plan. Renewal complaints come up again and again in reviews. Disable auto-renew when you sign up; you keep access until the period ends.
- Length
- 30 days, once
Tell the assistant who the reader is
Tone"Translate into Spanish" gives you correct but stiff text. "Translate into Mexican Spanish for small-business owners, casual, short sentences" gives you something you can publish. Add a sample paragraph in the target tone.

AI translation · FAQ
What is the best free AI translator?
For plain text, DeepL's free plan gives the most natural result in European languages, up to 50,000 characters a month. For documents, Google Translate is more generous: files up to 10 MB and PDFs up to 300 pages, with no monthly cap shown. DeepL's free plan stops at one file a month and forbids personal data.Is ChatGPT better than DeepL for translation?
For faithful translation of a formatted file, no: DeepL hands the document back in its original layout. For rewriting copy for another market, yes: ChatGPT changes tone and length on request. A developer who compared them in 2026 found Claude and GPT-5 close to DeepL from English into Dutch, German and French.Do AI translators use my text for training?
It depends on the plan. DeepL Free uses your text to train its models; DeepL Pro deletes it after processing. ChatGPT and Gemini train on personal-account chats by default, with a setting to opt out. Claude trains only if you opt in. Mistral lists an opt-out on its pricing grid. Can I use AI to translate a legal contract?
To understand it, yes. To sign a translated version, not without a review by a bilingual lawyer or certified translator. Teams that do this well use AI for the first draft and pay a native speaker to review. Pick a plan that keeps your files out of training, such as DeepL Pro.How do I translate a PDF and keep the layout?
Use a document translator, not a chat window. DeepL and Google Translate return the file in its original format. Limits differ: 5 MB and one file a month on DeepL Free, 10 MB on Google. A scanned PDF translates poorly, so run text recognition and convert it to Word first. Why does ChatGPT change brand names when it translates?
A language model aims for the most natural sentence and sometimes fixes a proper noun that looks like a typo. Paste a do-not-translate list at the start of the chat. In DeepL, a glossary does the same job: 5 entries free, 1,000 per glossary on Team. Will AI replace human translators?
Not for text with real stakes: contracts, medical leaflets, brand campaigns. It mostly replaces the first draft. Several businesses describe on forums translating with DeepL or ChatGPT, then paying a native speaker only to review. That costs less than full translation and is safer than AI alone. What is the best tool to translate a website?
A website localization tool, not a text translator. Weglot translates WordPress, Shopify or Webflow sites and publishes each language at its own URL, from €15 a month before VAT (Weglot estimates about $17). Its word count is a total for the whole site, not a monthly allowance, so count before you pick a plan.
