What are the best job posting sites for employers in 2026?

There's no single best board. There's the right pair for the role.

Most lists of job sites are written for job seekers, or by software vendors selling their own multiposting. Many are out of date: they still treat Glassdoor as a separate place to post, when it now routes employers to Indeed. We compared six options from the hiring side: who they reach, what they cost, and where the catch is.

The short answer: post on one general board plus one targeted channel, not ten. Indeed for volume across every trade, knowing that free jobs there lose visibility since early 2026. LinkedIn for professional roles and passive candidates. Wellfound if you're a startup, since posting there is free with no job cap.

Judge every site on one number: cost per qualified applicant, not views.

How we scored

How we compared and scored

A job board isn't worth its traffic. It's worth what it costs you to get one applicant who fits. A free site that sends three good people beats a paid one that sends a hundred off-target, which is why reach and cost carry the most weight.

We read each company's pricing pages and employer help docs, plus employer and candidate reviews, focusing on complaints. We also read the lists that rank highest on Google for this question: most give no prices at all.

Glassdoor is left out on purpose: it no longer takes postings directly and routes employers to Indeed, where sponsored jobs appear on Glassdoor automatically. ZipRecruiter is also left out: we couldn't read an official price list, and we don't rank a tool on someone else's numbers. JOIN and Workable keep the scores we give them in our recruiting software rankings: a tool has the same score everywhere on the site.

1
Best general job board for applicant volume

Indeed

4.2/5

Indeed is still where most US small businesses post first, and the reason is reach: no other board touches as many job seekers across as many trades. If you need a warehouse associate, a receptionist or a field sales rep, start here. Glassdoor, owned by the same group, no longer takes postings on its own. Sponsor a job on Indeed and it shows up on Glassdoor automatically.

The pricing model has moved, and a lot of round-ups missed it. You can still post for free. Sponsored jobs, though, are now charged per started application: you pay when someone begins applying, not when they view or click. The price is set by bidding, and Indeed may require a minimum budget per job depending on the market. Once you switch to this model, you can't go back to pay per click.

Since early 2026, Indeed has pushed visibility toward paid listings. Free jobs, and jobs with a budget that's too low, get seen less. On Indeed, free posting is now a test, not a plan.

The catch is quantity over quality. Employer reviews repeat the same points: lots of applicants for hourly roles, few who fit, and frequent upsell calls to sponsor or move to a bigger plan. Some employers stopped sponsoring altogether because the return didn't cover the cost.

Tip: make your screener questions required (license, availability, pay expectations). The most common employer complaint is incomplete applications slipping through anyway. And only sponsor roles that are hard to fill or high volume; leave the rest free for a week and see what comes in.

Standout features
  • Largest reach in this ranking
  • Sponsored jobs also appear on Glassdoor
  • Built-in screener questions
+Pros
  • ✓Free posting still possible
  • ✓You pay only when someone applies
  • ✓Covers every trade and city
−Cons
  • ✗Free jobs keep losing visibility
  • ✗Lots of off-target applicants
  • ✗Frequent upsell pressure
Verdict

The general board to post on first for volume roles. Budget for the urgent ones, and track cost per qualified applicant, not raw applicant counts.

2
Best for hiring managers, specialists and passive candidates

LinkedIn

4.1/5

LinkedIn isn't a job board in the usual sense: most people on it aren't job hunting. That's the point. For a sales manager, a senior accountant or a developer, many of the right candidates are employed and never browse Indeed. LinkedIn is the one general platform that reaches them.

You get one free active job at a time. To get more eyes on it, you promote it and pay per click, with each view of the job counting. You pick a daily budget or a total budget. LinkedIn's own example: $10 a day over 30 days, $300 at most. You're billed when the job closes (within 48 hours), every 30 days, or when your balance hits $500.

The trap few recruiters know: a promoted job on a daily budget doesn't close on its own. Forget to close it once the role is filled and it keeps spending. Set a calendar reminder the day you post.

The limit: cost per applicant climbs fast on entry-level roles, where Indeed does the job for less. And a free job alone gets little visibility. Without a budget, LinkedIn mostly signals that you're hiring.

Tip: show a salary range. It's the advice recruiters repeat most, and on LinkedIn, where candidates are usually employed, it's what earns the click.

Standout features
  • Reaches employed candidates
  • Daily or total budget
  • One free active job
+Pros
  • ✓Best channel for professional roles
  • ✓Budget capped upfront
  • ✓See the candidate's profile right away
−Cons
  • ✗Only one free job at a time
  • ✗Expensive for entry-level roles
  • ✗Daily-budget jobs must be closed by hand
Verdict

A must for professional or hard-to-find roles, overpriced for volume hiring. Use a total budget instead of a daily one if you might forget to close the job.

3
Best free job board for startups and tech roles

Wellfound

4.0/5

Wellfound is a job platform aimed at startups. Its pricing is the simplest in this ranking: posting is free, with no cap on the number of jobs, and it stays free. If you want more visibility on a given role, paid promotion starts at $200 per job.

For a seed-stage team hiring three engineers and a designer, that beats paying per click on LinkedIn for every role.

The limit: the audience is narrow. For a warehouse role, a receptionist or a local service job, Wellfound won't bring you anyone. Even for tech roles, pair it with a general board if you need volume.

Tip: post every open role there, since it costs nothing, and only pay the $200 promotion on the one role that stays open longest.

Standout features
  • Unlimited free postings
  • Startup-focused audience
  • Promotion priced per job
+Pros
  • ✓Free with no job cap
  • ✓Clear promotion price
  • ✓Strong on tech and startup roles
−Cons
  • ✗Narrow audience
  • ✗Useless for hourly roles
  • ✗Promotion adds up across many roles
Verdict

The obvious free board for a startup. Outside tech and startup roles, it won't move the needle.

Best for a pay-as-you-go posting without a contract

Monster

3.4/5

Monster is the oldest name in this ranking, and it has changed hands: its US assets now belong to Bold Holdings, and its French site closed in 2025 with no buyer in Europe. In the US, it still sells job postings under the Monster+ name.

Monster+ Standard has no subscription. You set a daily budget per job, with average budgets of $18, $27 or $35 a day depending on the visibility you want. A $10 setup fee applies and is turned into credits. Monster+ Pro costs $299 a month for 299 credits, for teams that post often. There's no free plan.

The limit: Monster's reach is well behind Indeed and LinkedIn today, and many lists that still rank it near the top haven't been updated in years. A daily budget also adds up: $27 a day for 30 days is $810 for one job.

Tip: if you try it, run one job on the lowest daily budget for two weeks alongside Indeed, and compare qualified applicants per dollar before going further.

Standout features
  • No subscription on Standard
  • Daily budget per job
  • Setup fee turned into credits
+Pros
  • ✓Simple pay-as-you-go
  • ✓Fixed monthly option with Pro
  • ✓Known brand with job seekers
−Cons
  • ✗No free plan
  • ✗Reach behind Indeed and LinkedIn
  • ✗Daily budgets add up fast
Verdict

A fallback, not a first pick. Worth a small trial for local US roles where Indeed alone isn't enough.

Best for multiposting one job to several boards

JOIN

3.9/5

JOIN isn't a job board. It's a multiposting tool with applicant tracking built in. You write the job once and JOIN sends it to more than ten free boards, with 250+ paid boards available as add-ons. Applications from all of them land in one inbox.

Pricing is per active job per month: €17 on Standard billed annually, €20 monthly, €34 on Advanced. From 15 jobs, Enterprise is on quote. A 14-day Advanced trial covers up to 5 jobs. JOIN bills in euros, so expect a small currency difference on a US card. Its 3.9 score is the one we give it in our recruiting software rankings.

The limit: candidate export is only on Advanced. And multiposting isn't magic: experienced recruiters warn that sending a job everywhere mostly brings off-target applicants. Costs also climb if you leave many jobs open at once.

Tip: close each job as soon as it's filled, since you pay per active job, and pick two or three relevant boards instead of ticking them all.

Standout features
  • 10+ free boards in one posting
  • All applicants in one place
  • Priced per active job
+Pros
  • ✓Low entry price
  • ✓Applicant tracking included
  • ✓14-day trial
−Cons
  • ✗Export on Advanced only
  • ✗Billed in euros
  • ✗Cost grows with open jobs
Verdict

Handy for a small team that posts rarely and wants one inbox. It's how you post to other boards, not one more board.

Best if job posting is part of a full hiring process

Workable

3.2/5

Workable is recruiting software, not a job board. It belongs here because many growing companies stop choosing a board and choose a system that posts for them. You publish from Workable, and candidates from the boards you pick flow into one shared pipeline.

It doesn't come cheap. Standard starts at $299 a month, Premier at $599 and Enterprise at $719, with the exact price set by company size. Annual billing saves up to 20%. Add-ons for SMS ($89), video interviews ($109) and assessments ($59) are monthly extras.

The limit: for a company that hires two or three people a year, that's a lot of money for postings you could make directly on Indeed or LinkedIn. Its 3.2 score, the same as in our recruiting software rankings, reflects that cost.

Tip: only look at Workable once you hire every month. Before that, a free board plus a spreadsheet does the same job.

Standout features
  • Posting plus a full pipeline
  • One pipeline for the whole team
  • Pricing by company size
+Pros
  • ✓Complete hiring workflow
  • ✓One place for every role
  • ✓Annual discount up to 20%
−Cons
  • ✗$299 a month minimum
  • ✗Paid add-ons
  • ✗Overkill for occasional hiring
Verdict

Right for a company that hires constantly. For occasional hiring, post straight to the boards.

The catches

What job board lists don't tell you

Lists of job sites give you names. They rarely tell you how billing works, what changed lately, or how to know if a site works for you.

Free on Indeed isn't really free anymore

Since early 2026, Indeed has favored sponsored jobs, and free or underfunded jobs get seen less. Sponsored jobs are billed per started application, with no way back to pay per click. Posting for free on Indeed is now a test. For an urgent role, budget from day one.

The number that matters: cost per qualified applicant

A widely cited US study found job boards bring in nearly half of applicants (49%) but fewer than one hire in five (19%). Volume is misleading. To compare two sites, divide what you spent by the number of applicants you'd actually interview. A free board that sends two strong people often beats a paid one that sends forty who don't fit.

Posting everywhere isn't always better

Sending a job to twenty boards sounds smart. Experienced recruiters advise against it: it mostly brings off-target applicants and hours of screening. What works, in their words: two well-chosen sites, one general and one specific to the role. A multiposting tool like JOIN still helps to keep replies in one inbox, if you tick only a few boards.

Post smarter

Post your job and pay less per qualified applicant

Six steps drawn from recruiter advice and employer complaints. They apply to every site in this ranking.

01

Pick two channels for the role

Priority

Hourly or volume role: Indeed. Professional or senior role: LinkedIn. Startup or tech role: Wellfound, plus LinkedIn if needed. Start with two channels, and add a third only if nothing comes in after two weeks.

Rule
One general board + one targeted channel
02

Show a salary range

Advice

It's the advice recruiters repeat most: at least a range. Jobs without pay draw fewer serious applicants, and on LinkedIn, where people are usually employed, it decides the click.

Minimum
A range
03

Make screener questions required

Trap

License, availability, pay expectations, location: ask in the form and make them required. Incomplete applications slipping through is the top employer complaint on Indeed, and on a board billed per application, each one costs money.

Where
Application form
04

Only pay for roles that need it

Budget

Save sponsorship for hard-to-fill or high-volume roles. For the rest, post free, watch for a week, then decide. On LinkedIn, prefer a total budget over a daily one: it stops by itself.

LinkedIn example
$10 a day for 30 days = $300 max
05

Close jobs the day the role is filled

Trap

A LinkedIn job on a daily budget doesn't close itself. JOIN bills per active job per month. Monster's daily budgets run until you stop them. Set a reminder when you post, and close everywhere the day the offer is signed.

To close
LinkedIn, JOIN, Monster
06

Compare channels after a month

Measure

For each site, note what you spent and how many applicants you'd interview. Divide one by the other. That cost per qualified applicant tells you, for your trade and your city, which site to keep.

FAQ · 7 questions

Job posting sites · FAQ

  • How much does it cost to post a job on Indeed?
Posting can still be free, but free jobs get less visibility since early 2026. Sponsored jobs are billed per started application through bidding, and Indeed may set a minimum budget per job depending on the market. Once you switch to that model, you can't go back to pay per click.
  • Is Glassdoor free for employers to post jobs?
Glassdoor no longer takes postings directly: employers are routed to Indeed. A job you sponsor on Indeed is posted on Glassdoor automatically. Lists that call it a separate free channel are out of date.
  • How much does a LinkedIn job post cost?
One active job at a time is free. To promote it you pay per click with a daily or total budget; LinkedIn's example is $10 a day for 30 days, $300 at most. Billing happens at close, every 30 days, or when your balance reaches $500.
  • What are the best free job posting sites?
Wellfound for startups (unlimited free jobs), one free active job on LinkedIn, and free posting on Indeed, which still works but with less visibility. JOIN sends one job to more than ten free boards, but the tool itself is paid per active job.
  • Is ZipRecruiter worth it?
We left it out of this ranking because we couldn't read an official price list, and we don't score a tool on numbers we can't check. Ask for a written quote and compare it with Indeed on cost per qualified applicant over the same month.
  • Indeed or LinkedIn for a small business?
Indeed for hourly and volume roles, LinkedIn for professional and hard-to-fill roles. If one role sits in between, post on both for two weeks and keep the one with the lower cost per qualified applicant.
  • Is Monster still worth using?
Only as a small trial for US roles. It has no free plan: Monster+ Standard runs on a daily budget per job with no subscription, and Monster+ Pro costs $299 a month. Its French site closed in 2025.
