Best print on demand for beginners in 2026
The right printer makes your product close to your buyers and charges you nothing before your first sale.
The short answer. For a first store on Etsy or Shopify, pick Printify: the account is free, its own example shirt costs $8.77 to produce before shipping, and you choose the print provider yourself, ideally one in your buyers' country. If you want consistent quality without comparing providers, pick Printful: a shirt ships within the US for $4.95, plus $2.20 per extra item. If your buyers are spread across countries, Gelato prints locally in 32 of them. And if you have no website or store at all, Spreadshop runs everything for you, for free.
We compared these five printers on what makes a launch work or fail: where the product is made, what the first package costs, what you keep on a sale, and how support handles a lost order. Prices come from the official 2026 pricing pages, the traps from seller reviews on rating platforms.
Our ranking is editorial: a sponsored placement is always labeled on its card, and no affiliate link ever changes a score.

How we compared and scored
For a beginner, the core question is not catalog size. It is who prints the product, where it ships from and what that costs, because that is where your margin, your delivery time and your first reviews are decided. For each ranked printer, we checked its official pages for where it produces, what the first item costs to ship and what you keep on a sale, then read seller reviews on rating platforms.
We score on the five criteria of our full reviews, weighted equally, so a tool gets the same score here as on its review page. Printify and Gelato keep the score of their full review. Printful, TPOP and Spreadshop do not have one yet: their score is the average of their five sub-scores, rounded down to the tenth to stay cautious. Rank follows score.

Our ranking is editorial: a sponsored placement is always labeled on its card, and no affiliate link ever changes a score.
Printify
Printify ranks first because it lets you do the one thing that matters on day one: check your margin before you sell. The account is free, and Printify only charges for a product when a customer buys it. Its own example says it all: a shirt that costs $8.77 to produce, sold at $19.99, leaves you over $11, before shipping and taxes.
Its strength, and its trap, is that it does not print anything itself. It connects you with 80+ print providers offering 1,300+ products. For the same shirt, you pick the provider, which means you pick the price, the quality and the country it ships from. Pick a provider in your buyers' country: a US shirt shipped to a European buyer takes longer and can get stuck in customs, which is exactly what some beginners describe with their first sample.
Two more traps keep coming up in reviews. The price climbs with every print area: a back print or a sleeve adds to the base cost, and some sellers only found out after their first orders. And support feels slow when a store disconnects; one seller saw Etsy listings duplicated after reconnecting. Hence a support score of 3.2 out of 5.
Premium makes no sense at the start. Its discount goes up to 20%, which is at most $1.75 on the $8.77 shirt. At $24.99 a month billed yearly, you need more than 14 shirts sold every month before it pays for itself.
- 1,300+ products from 80+ print providers
- Official example: an $8.77 shirt leaves over $11 at $19.99
- Up to 5 stores on the free plan
- Connects to Shopify, Etsy, WooCommerce and eBay
- ✓Free until your first sale
- ✓You choose the provider, so the price and the ship-from country
- ✓Biggest catalog in this ranking
- ✗Quality varies between providers: order a sample first
- ✗Support scored 3.2 out of 5, slow when a connection breaks
The best starting point if you take ten minutes to filter providers by location and order a sample. Skip those two habits and it is also the easiest one to get wrong.
Printful
Printful works the opposite way from Printify: it prints in its own facilities. You do not compare providers, you pick a product, and you get the same quality on every order. For a beginner who does not want to gamble on suppliers, that peace of mind is the main reason to choose it. European orders are made in Riga, Latvia, or Barcelona, Spain.
Shipping is easy to plan. A shirt costs $4.95 to ship within the US, then $2.20 per extra item in the same package; to Europe, it is $4.99 then $1.45. Allow 2 to 5 business days of fulfillment, then 3 to 4 business days of standard US delivery, per Printful's estimates. The base price of every product is shown in the catalog: check it before you set your retail price.
The free plan is plenty to start with: unlimited stores, a free design maker and a free mockup generator. The trick is the sample discount, 20% on the free plan. Growth, at $24.99 a month, becomes free once you hit $12K a year in sales, so there is no reason to pay for it earlier.
On the downside, reviews mention lost or late packages, prints that came out off-center or darker than expected, and support that answers with an AI chat first. Also worth knowing: Printful and Printify are now part of the same group.
- Its own facilities, with Riga and Barcelona for Europe
- US shipping: $4.95, then $2.20 per extra item
- 20% off samples on the free plan
- Growth becomes free at $12K/year in sales
- ✓Consistent quality from one manufacturer
- ✓Complete free plan with unlimited stores
- ✓Shipping rates you can read before you sell
- ✗Products often cost more than Printify's cheapest providers
- ✗Reports of lost packages and off-center prints, AI chat first on support
The low-stress pick: a little less margin per shirt, far fewer quality surprises.
Gelato
Gelato solves a problem most beginners discover too late: the buyer abroad who waits weeks for a package. It routes every order to a production partner near the customer, across 140+ partners in 32 countries. About 95% of orders are produced in the country of delivery, with 2 to 4 days for domestic delivery. You set nothing up: routing is automatic.
Gelato's own comparison gives a useful US benchmark: a Gildan 5000 shirt delivered in the US costs $8.14 plus $4.66 for economy shipping. The free plan is enough to start. Gelato+ costs $29.99 a month, or $19.99 a month billed yearly, and takes up to 33% off products. It does not touch shipping, so on orders where shipping is a big share of the cost, the discount matters less than it looks.
Seller reviews praise local production, the quality of posters and frames, and fast refunds when something goes wrong. The criticism is about support: an AI chat with no human behind it, which explains its 2.9 out of 5. A German seller also notes that wallet data cannot be exported for bookkeeping, through Shopify or the API. If you do your own books, plan to log those payments by hand.
- Local production in 32 countries, 140+ partners
- About 95% of orders made in the country of delivery
- Gildan 5000 shirt in the US: $8.14 + $4.66 economy shipping
- Connects to Shopify, Etsy, WooCommerce, Wix and Squarespace
- ✓Short delivery times with zero setup
- ✓Strong reputation for posters and frames
- ✓Free plan good enough to start
- ✗Weakest support in this ranking (2.9 out of 5)
- ✗Gelato+ gives no shipping discount, wallet data hard to export
The right pick as soon as your buyers are not all in one country. For a US-only store, Printify or Printful do the job just as well.
TPOP
TPOP is a French print provider, and that is its main argument: if your buyers are in France, so is your factory. Production starts within 2 to 4 days, then delivery in France takes 2 to 3 business days. Prices are in euros before VAT, which keeps your margin math simple if you sell in the eurozone.
The account is free, with no subscription and no commission. You pay for the product when it sells. Shipping a shirt within France costs €3.95 before VAT, then €1.20 per extra item. Its made-in-France women's tee costs €19.00 before VAT with printing included: a premium product to sell on the made-in-France angle. You can sell through the free TPOP shop, or connect Shopify, WooCommerce or Etsy.
Seller reviews are among the best in this ranking: quality, fast support, plastic-free packaging. Hence its top support score, 4.0 out of 5. The flaws mentioned are smaller: thin La Poste tracking and creases on large prints. One seller also reports that custom inner labels only open up from 100 orders a month. The catalog is shorter than Printify's or Printful's, and for a US-only store, it is not the right fit.
- Ships from France, delivered in 2 to 3 business days
- France shipping: €3.95 excl. VAT, then €1.20 per item
- No subscription, no commission
- Free TPOP shop, or Shopify, WooCommerce, Etsy
- ✓Euro pricing before VAT, no currency conversion
- ✓Fast delivery within France
- ✓Fast support according to sellers
- ✗Shorter catalog than the big providers
- ✗Inner labels reserved for high volume, basic La Poste tracking
The best pick for a store aimed at French buyers. Not the cheapest on made-in-France items, but simple to price and quick to deliver.
Spreadshop
Spreadshop, from the Spreadshirt group, is the simplest start in this ranking. You open your shop for free, upload your designs and set your price. Spreadshop handles printing, packing, shipping, returns and even customer service. You never answer an unhappy buyer yourself: that is rare for a print provider, and valuable when you are new.
Products are made in its four facilities in Europe and the US, typically printed and shipped within 48 hours. You can sell under your YouTube videos, on Instagram and Facebook, or through a link from TikTok. A performance bonus is added based on your monthly sales.
The trade-off is control. The base price is not shown on the overview page: you see it inside your account, product by product. The buyer belongs to the Spreadshop store more than to you. And if you plan to connect an Etsy store from Europe, be careful: Spreadconnect, the Spreadshirt version that plugs into online stores, no longer accepts Etsy for new European merchants since 2025. For Shopify, Spreadconnect stays free, with 95% of orders shipped within 48 hours.
- Free, no subscription, no minimum
- Printing, shipping, returns and customer service handled
- Typically printed and shipped within 48 hours
- Sell under YouTube videos, on Instagram and Facebook
- ✓No site to build, no customers to manage
- ✓Zero fixed cost
- ✓Facilities in both Europe and the US
- ✗Base price visible only inside your account
- ✗Little control over margin and the customer relationship
The easiest way to test an idea without setting anything up. Once you want your own brand and your own customers, move to a printer connected to Shopify.
What beginners learn the hard way
Six habits drawn from official pricing pages and seller reviews. None of them costs much; all of them protect your margin or your first buyer.
The traps
Order a sample before you sell
AllQuality changes from one Printify provider to the next, and even with a single manufacturer, a color can print darker than on screen. Order your product, wear it, wash it. On Printful's free plan, the 20% sample discount makes this almost painless.
- Prevents
- A bad first review
- Tip
- 20% off samples at Printful (free plan)
Check where the package ships from
PrintifyA product made in one country and shipped to another means longer delivery and possible customs fees. On Printify, filter providers by location and pick one in your buyers' country. Gelato routes orders locally on its own; Printful and Spreadshop print in both the US and Europe.
- Prevents
- A package stuck in customs
Count every print area
MarginThe base price usually covers one print area. A back print, a sleeve or a label costs extra. Run your margin math with every area on your product, not with the headline price on the product page.
- Where to look
- The price breakdown in the product editor
One provider per order
PrintifyIf a buyer orders a shirt and a mug made by two different providers, you pay shipping twice. Keep a collection with one provider, or use a single manufacturer like Printful, where a second shirt in the same US package adds only $2.20.
- Printful US
- $4.95, then $2.20 per item
- Printful Europe
- $4.99, then $1.45 per item
Pay for no plan at the start
BudgetAll five ranked printers have a free plan that is enough to launch. Printify Premium only pays off beyond roughly 14 to 15 shirts a month. Printful Growth turns free at $12K a year in sales. Gelato+ does not discount shipping. Wait until you have steady sales.
- Saves
- $24.99 to $39 a month
- When to upgrade
- When the discount beats the plan price
Price with every fee included
EtsyOn Etsy, count roughly $5 in fees on a $30 sale. Add sales tax rules where you sell, and currency conversion if you buy from TPOP in euros. Set your retail price once all of this is added up, not before.
- Etsy fees
- About $5 on a $30 sale
Other options, and the ones we left out
Sellfy and Redbubble are not printers you plug into your store: one is a storefront, the other a marketplace. They can suit a specific profile, hence this separate section.
Other options
Sellfy: a storefront for creators who already have an audience
StorefrontSellfy does not print: it is a hosted online store with built-in print on demand, made to sell to an audience you already have on Instagram or YouTube. It takes 0% commission on sales, but there is no free plan: Starter costs $29 a month, or $22 a month billed yearly, with a cap of $10,000 in sales over a rolling 12 months. Past that, Business is $79 a month. For a true beginner with no audience, that is a fixed cost before the first sale. Our full review scores it 3.6 out of 5.

- Starter $29/mo, $22/mo yearly

Redbubble: sell without a store, but not without fees
MarketplaceRedbubble is a marketplace: you upload designs, Redbubble finds buyers, prints and ships. Signing up is free and you set your margin as a percentage of the base price: on a $20 base with a 20% margin, you earn $4. The catch is the account fee: 50% of your monthly earnings on a Standard account, 20% on Premium, 0% on Pro, capped at $150 a month, and Redbubble decides your account tier. A markup above 20% is also charged 50% on that portion for Standard and Premium. The customer stays Redbubble's.
- Account fee
- 50% / 20% / 0% of earnings, $150/mo cap
- Best for
- Artists with no store and no traffic
The ones we left out, and why
ExcludedTeeinblue is not a printer: it is a Shopify personalization app, paid from the first month, that plugs into Printify, Printful or Gelato. Useful later, for personalized products. Spring and Zazzle did not publish a pricing page we could read. Gooten is built for higher-volume sellers. Prodigi shines on posters and art prints rather than apparel. Tunetoo, another French printer, does not publish its prices. No official price, no ranking.
Your situation, your printer
The right printer depends on three things: where your buyers are, where you sell, and how much time you want to spend on customer service. Find your case below.
You are opening your first Etsy store
Printify, with a provider picked in your buyers' country, or Printful if you prefer one quality standard. European sellers should skip Spreadconnect: it no longer accepts Etsy for new European merchants.
Your buyers are mostly in the US
Printify with US providers, or Printful at $4.95 per shirt shipped within the US plus $2.20 per extra item. Both are free to start.
You sell in several countries
Gelato: each order is made close to the buyer, in 32 countries. You never choose a facility yourself.
You have no website or store
Spreadshop: free shop with printing, shipping, returns and customer service handled. If you are an artist who does not even want a shop, Redbubble finds the buyers, at a steep fee on a Standard account.
You already have an audience
Sellfy, if $29 a month for a commission-free branded store is fine with you. Otherwise, Spreadshop gives you a free shop to link under your videos.
Your budget is zero
Any of the five ranked printers on its free plan. Your only real launch cost is samples.
- Pick a provider in your buyers' country.
- Order a sample of every product before listing it.
- Do your margin math with every print area, shipping, platform fees and tax.
- Keep each order with one provider so you pay shipping once.
- Stay on the free plan until a subscription discount beats its price.
- Start with one niche and a handful of products, not a full catalog.

Print on demand for beginners · FAQ
What is the best print on demand platform for beginners?
Printify for most beginners: free account, 1,300+ products, and an example shirt that costs $8.77 to produce before shipping. Pick a provider in your buyers' country. If you want one consistent manufacturer, Printful is the alternative, with US shirt shipping at $4.95. With no store or website, Spreadshop handles everything for free. Can you start print on demand with no money?
Almost. All five ranked printers have a free plan and only charge for a product once it sells, so the buyer pays before you do. Your only real upfront cost is samples, which you should order before listing anything.Printful or Printify for a beginner?
Printify if you want the lowest cost and accept choosing your provider; Printful if you want one quality standard and clear shipping ($4.95 then $2.20 per extra shirt within the US). Both are free to start, and both now belong to the same group. How much can you make per shirt?
Printify's official example: a shirt that costs $8.77 to produce and sells for $19.99 leaves over $11, before shipping and taxes. Then subtract platform fees (about $5 on a $30 Etsy sale) and any extra print area. Do this math before setting your price, not after. Is print on demand still worth it in 2026?
Yes, as a low-risk way to test designs, since you hold no inventory and pay nothing upfront. The margin is thin, though: on an $8.77 shirt sold at $19.99, shipping, platform fees and extra print areas eat a large share. It works best with a niche audience and a few well-priced products.Do you need a Shopify store to start?
No. You can connect to Etsy, sell through a free shop like Spreadshop's, or use a marketplace like Redbubble. Shopify becomes useful when you want your own brand and to keep your own customers. How do you avoid slow delivery and customs?
Have products made in your buyers' country. On Printify, choose the provider product by product; Gelato makes about 95% of orders in the country of delivery; Printful and Spreadshop print in both the US and Europe.Should you pay for Printify Premium or Gelato+?
Not at first. Printify Premium's discount goes up to 20%: on an $8.77 shirt, you need more than 14 sales a month to cover $24.99. Gelato+ does not discount shipping, and Printful Growth becomes free at $12K a year in sales.Do you need to be a designer to start?
No. Printful gives you a free design maker and a free mockup generator, even on its free plan. A well-chosen line of text or a simple graphic is enough to test an idea. Order a sample to check the print before you list the product.
