What's the best sales tax software for an ecommerce store in 2026?
Seven tools compared on the question vendors blur: who calculates the tax, who files it, and who's liable.
The short answer: for a small US store, start with TaxJar at $39 a month for calculation, with 2 AutoFile filing credits a year. If you only file a few returns a year, Numeral charges $75 per filing with free nexus monitoring. On Shopify, Shopify Tax calculates for free up to $100,000 in sales. And if you sell software or digital products worldwide, Paddle becomes the seller of record and handles sales tax and VAT for 5% plus $0.50 per sale.
Most "best sales tax software" lists are written by a vendor that ranks itself first. They also mix up three jobs. Calculation applies the right rate at checkout. Filing submits returns in every state where you have nexus, and VAT returns abroad. A merchant of record sells for you and does both. Plenty of merchants pay for calculation and assume filing is covered. We compared official pricing pages, docs and merchant threads to sort out who does what.

The column that matters is the second one: does the tool calculate, file, or sell for you? Two tools only calculate, two merchants of record do everything, and filing costs swing from $75 a return to a flat monthly plan.

How we compared and scored
We started from a store owner's question: who charges the right rate to my customer in Texas or Germany, and who files the return when it's due? For each tool we read the official pricing page and the docs, hunting for the sentence that says what the tool doesn't do. That's how you learn Shopify Tax files nothing, or that Stripe's own filing outside the US covers only the non-Union OSS and Canada.
Then we read merchants: r/ecommerce threads, the Shopify Community, WordPress plugin support forums, Trustpilot and G2. They surface the filing credits that run out, the rounding bug on a multi-item cart, and the annual contract that won't cancel. Anrok stayed out because its pricing page couldn't be read, and Quaderno because its page shows amounts without a currency. We also left out tools we couldn't document from official sources, such as Zamp and TaxCloud. We don't quote state nexus thresholds here: they vary by state and change, so check each state's revenue department.

TaxJar
TaxJar, owned by Stripe, is the tool small US merchants name most often when someone asks which sales tax platform to use. It calculates sales tax at checkout, tracks where you sell and files returns through AutoFile. Starter costs $39 a month and Professional $99 a month, both shown at up to 200 orders a month. Starter includes 2 AutoFile credits a year and Professional 4; after that, each filing costs $50 or $55.
Do the math before you pick a plan. With nexus in five states filing monthly, you burn through the credits in the first month, and the per-filing fees become the real bill. Paying yearly cuts the price by 10% or more. One more thing: the pricing page is about US sales tax only, so EU VAT needs another tool.
- Sales tax calculation at checkout
- AutoFile for state returns
- Quick Shopify and Amazon setup
- No long contract
- ✓Recommended again and again by small store owners
- ✓Monthly billing, no 12-month lock-in
- ✓Clear public pricing
- ✗US sales tax only, no EU VAT in the plans
- ✗Filing credits run out fast across several states
- ✗Best price only when you pay yearly
The default pick for a small US store. Count your states and filings first: if you file only a handful of returns a year, Numeral's pay-per-filing model will usually cost less.
Numeral
Numeral flips the pricing model. Nexus monitoring is free, and on Professional you pay $75 per return filed and $150 per state registration, with no monthly commitment. It connects to Shopify, Stripe, Amazon and QuickBooks and covers every US state.
That model shines for a store with nexus in two or three states filing quarterly: eight to twelve returns a year, no subscription. Merchants on Reddit also mention Numeral for help with late filings, which is when most small sellers start looking. VAT and GST in 90+ countries exist, but only on the custom Enterprise plan.
- Free nexus monitoring
- $75 per filing, $150 per registration
- Shopify, Stripe, Amazon and QuickBooks connections
- ✓You pay only for what gets filed
- ✓No monthly fee for monitoring
- ✓Good fit for catching up on back filings
- ✗Gets expensive with many monthly returns
- ✗International VAT only on Enterprise, priced on request
The smart choice when you file a few returns a year. Once you file monthly in several states, run the numbers against TaxJar: at 60 returns a year, per-filing pricing costs more.
Shopify Tax
Shopify Tax calculates sales tax and VAT at checkout based on where the order ships and the product category, and it tracks your thresholds. It's free up to $100,000 in sales. After that, US orders cost 0.35% on Basic, Grow and Advanced, 0.25% on Plus, never more than $0.99 per order. EU, UK and Canada rates are lower (0.25% and 0.15%).
The catch: it calculates, it doesn't file. Shopify Tax won't register you, won't validate business VAT numbers and won't submit returns. Stores opened since spring 2026 get a lifetime $100,000 threshold; older stores reset it every year and keep a $5,000 annual cap per region.
- Rates by location and product category
- Threshold tracking
- $0.99 cap per order
- ✓Already in your admin, nothing to install
- ✓Free for most small stores
- ✓Covers US sales tax and EU VAT calculation
- ✗No registrations or filings
- ✗Native report shows tax, not sales by country, for EU returns
Turn it on, it's the free half of the job. Pair it with TaxJar or Numeral for US filings, or an EU filing service for VAT.
Paddle
Paddle isn't a tax tool. It's a merchant of record (MoR): Paddle sells to your customer, collects the payment, and handles sales tax and VAT everywhere it applies. You get paid out. The price is 5% plus $0.50 per transaction, all in.
On a $20 subscription that's $1.50, or 7.5%. On a $300 license it's $15.50, just over 5%. The smaller the cart, the more the fixed fee hurts. Paddle is built for SaaS, apps and digital products; its pricing page doesn't cover physical goods.
- Global sales tax and VAT handled
- Chargebacks handled
- No foreign tax registrations in your name
- ✓No nexus tracking, no filings
- ✓One price, no subscription
- ✓Sell in the US and EU from day one
- ✗Pricey on small carts
- ✗Not built for physical goods
- ✗Customers see Paddle on their statement
The simplest way for a SaaS to sell worldwide without a tax team. For a store shipping boxes, skip it.
Stripe Tax
Stripe Tax calculates tax in 100+ countries and monitors your thresholds. Tax Basic has no monthly fee: 0.5% per transaction with Stripe's no-code tools, or $0.50 per transaction through the API (10 calculation calls included, $0.05 each after). You only pay where you're registered. Tax Complete adds registrations and filings, from $90 a month with 2 registrations and 4 filings a year, on a one-year contract.
Read the fine print on filing outside the US. Stripe's own automated filing abroad covers the EU non-Union OSS through Ireland and Canada's simplified GST/HST. Everything else goes through partners such as TaxJar and Taxually, using your Tax Complete filing credits. Stripe doesn't remit for you either: you pay the tax authority yourself.
- Calculation in 100+ countries
- Threshold monitoring
- Partner filings with Tax Complete
- ✓One toggle if you're on Stripe
- ✓No subscription on Tax Basic
- ✓Strong for a US SaaS selling into the EU
- ✗0.5% is charged on the total, tax included
- ✗Tax Complete locks you in for 12 months
- ✗WooCommerce plugin had line-item rounding bugs
Great at calculation, and the natural choice on Stripe. Budget for Tax Complete or a partner if you need returns filed.
Lemon Squeezy
Lemon Squeezy works like Paddle: it sells on your behalf and collects and remits sales tax and VAT. It charges 5% plus 50 cents per transaction, and extra fees can apply to some payments outside the US.
It's aimed at creators: downloads, courses, simple subscriptions. If you sell physical items, check its prohibited products list first. Against Paddle, the tax side is a wash; pick on checkout pages, affiliate tools and payouts.
- Sales tax and VAT handled
- Ready-made checkout pages
- Built for digital products
- ✓Live in a day
- ✓No filings at all
- ✓No subscription
- ✗Extra fees possible outside the US
- ✗Not for physical inventory
- ✗Same high cost as Paddle on small carts
An easy start for a creator's first international sales. A store with inventory should look elsewhere.
Avalara
Avalara has the broadest coverage on this list: AvaTax for calculation, Returns for filing, plus VAT services across Europe. For small businesses, Avalara Select bundles US filing at about $79 per state per month (Core Compliance) or $69 with Streamlined Sales Tax services, with a minimum of 3 states on Core Compliance ($799 per state per year if paid annually) and no minimum on the SST option. European VAT, OSS and IOSS are quoted.
Price per state adds up fast: five states is around $395 a month. Field reports are mixed: a 3 out of 5 on Trustpilot with recurring complaints about cancellations refused before the end of a 12-month contract and renewals billed without consent, and "pricier than you need" advice from small sellers on Reddit.
- US sales tax plus European VAT
- Minimum of 3 states on Core Compliance
- Separate calculation and filing modules
- ✓Covers the most complex cases
- ✓Long track record with accountants
- ✓Flat price per state, no per-filing fee
- ✗Per-state pricing climbs fast
- ✗12-month contracts and cancellation complaints
- ✗VAT and full AvaTax pricing on quote
Worth it when your tax footprint is truly complex. A small store will pay less and sleep better with TaxJar or Numeral.
What your tax tool actually needs to do
In the US, sales tax is set state by state. Once you have nexus in a state (a physical presence or enough sales there), you collect its tax and file returns on its schedule. Selling into the EU adds VAT, and for a US seller it starts with the first sale. Here's what each type of tool covers.
Calculation at checkout
Shopify Tax and Stripe Tax apply the right rate by address and product. They don't file. It's half the job, and often free or close to it.
Filing returns
TaxJar files through AutoFile with a few credits included, Numeral charges per return, Avalara Select charges per state. Count your states and your filing frequency before comparing.
Merchant of record
Paddle and Lemon Squeezy sell for you, so sales tax and VAT are their problem. You pay 5% of the price or more, and it only works for digital products.
Nexus monitoring
Before you register anywhere, know where you have nexus. Numeral's monitoring is free, Shopify Tax and Stripe Tax track thresholds too. Register only where you must.
EU VAT
If you're based outside the EU, there's no €10,000 threshold: you charge the customer's country VAT from the first sale. Digital services go through the non-Union OSS; goods shipped from outside the EU in parcels up to €150 go through the IOSS, which requires an EU intermediary. The €10,000 threshold only applies to sellers established in one EU country. A VAT filing service such as hellotax can take the returns off your hands.
Marketplaces
Where a marketplace is responsible for collecting the tax, those sales shouldn't land in your own returns. Make sure your tool can exclude them, or you'll report the same tax twice.
- Ask in writing which returns the tool files, and in which countries
- Count filings per year and price them on per-filing plans
- Check whether fees are charged on the total including tax
- Read the contract length before signing, especially 12-month plans
- Test a multi-item cart before going live
- Exclude marketplace-collected sales from your returns
Six mistakes that cost online sellers money
Sales tax rarely goes wrong on the rate. It goes wrong on a tool that doesn't do what you assumed, or on a filing bill you didn't see coming.
The mistakes
Assuming a calculation tool files your returns
Most commonShopify Tax says plainly it doesn't register you or file returns. Stripe Tax Basic calculates only; filing needs Tax Complete or a partner. If nobody files, you've collected tax you still owe.
- Shopify Tax
- Calculation only
- Stripe Tax Basic
- Calculation only
Ignoring per-filing fees after the included credits
TaxJar Starter includes 2 AutoFile credits a year, Professional 4. Five states filing monthly is 60 returns a year: at $50 to $55 each after the credits, filing costs more than the subscription. Price your real filing count, not the headline plan.
- Example
- 56 extra filings × $55 = $3,080
Forgetting the fee is charged on the total
Stripe Tax charges its 0.5% on the full transaction amount, tax included. On $200,000 in sales that's $1,000 a year. Compare it with Shopify Tax, free up to $100,000 in sales.
- Example
- $200,000 × 0.5% = $1,000
Going live without testing a multi-item cart
Users of the Stripe Tax for WooCommerce plugin reported tax doubled per line item (fixed in version 2.0.1), cents added to tax-inclusive subtotals, and tax shown but not charged. Run a test order with several products before launch.
- Fix
- Plugin version 2.0.1 or later
Signing a 12-month plan for a small business
Stripe Tax Complete is a one-year contract. Avalara reviews on Trustpilot repeat the same story: cancellation refused before the term ends, renewal billed without consent. If you're small, favor monthly or per-filing pricing.
- Stripe Tax Complete
- 1-year contract
Picking a merchant of record for physical goods
Paddle and Lemon Squeezy are built for software and digital products. At 5% plus a fixed fee, they cost more than a tax tool on any store with real volume, and they're not designed for inventory and shipping.
- Paddle
- 5% + $0.50 per sale

Sales tax software FAQ
Do I need sales tax software for a small online store?
Once you collect tax in more than one or two states, yes in practice. Shopify Tax handles calculation for free up to $100,000 in sales, but filings still have to happen: TaxJar from $39 a month or Numeral at $75 a filing are the usual next step.
Does Shopify file sales tax returns for me?
No. Shopify Tax calculates tax and tracks thresholds, but it doesn't register you or file returns. You need a filing tool, an accountant, or a merchant of record.
Is TaxJar or Avalara better for a small business?
TaxJar for most small stores: monthly pricing from $39, quick Shopify setup, and frequent recommendations from small merchants. Avalara makes sense when your footprint is complex; its Select plan runs about $79 per state per month.
Does Stripe Tax file returns automatically?
In the US, with Tax Complete (from $90 a month, one-year contract). Outside the US, Stripe itself files only the EU non-Union OSS and Canada's simplified GST/HST; other countries go through partners like TaxJar and Taxually using your filing credits.
What is a merchant of record and when should I use one?
A merchant of record sells your product in its own name and handles sales tax and VAT everywhere. Use one, like Paddle at 5% plus $0.50, if you sell software or digital products worldwide and don't want any filings. Skip it for physical goods.
Do I have to charge VAT when selling to EU customers?
Yes.
How much does it cost to file in five states?
Monthly filing in five states is 60 returns a year. On Numeral that's $4,500. On TaxJar Professional, $1,188 in subscription plus 56 filings at about $55, roughly $4,268. On Avalara Select, about $79 × 5 × 12, or $4,740. Quarterly filing cuts all three.
