What is the best SEO tool in 2026?
There is no single best SEO tool. There's your budget, your site, and the one job you need done first.
Search for the best SEO tool and you get lists of 20 or 30 products, many written by companies that sell one of them. The real decision is smaller than that. It comes down to three questions: how much you can spend each month, how many people will log in, and what you need first (keyword ideas, competitor research, a technical fix, or better content).
The short answer: set up Google Search Console before anything else. It's free, and it's the only real Google data about your site. If you have a suite budget, pick Ahrefs for backlinks and competitor work, or Semrush if the same tool also has to cover paid search and content. SE Ranking gives you most of that for less, with four times the tracked keywords of Semrush's entry plan.
Before you enter a card, read the section on real cost. Sticker prices leave out extra seats, credits that run dry mid-month, and trials that quietly turn into subscriptions.
The ranking is editorial: a sponsored spot is always labeled on its card, and no affiliate link changes a score.

Scores on five weighted criteria, explained in the method. For Ahrefs, Semrush, Ubersuggest and Surfer, the score matches our full review. Prices checked in 2026 on each vendor's pricing page.
How we compared and scored
Most best-SEO-tool lists put Semrush or Ahrefs on top, then stack 20 more products without ever adding up what you'd pay. We started from the other end. A solo blogger with $30 a month and an agency with five seats aren't shopping for the same thing, so price and fit weigh as much as raw features here.
We read every vendor's official pricing page, the limits of each plan (projects, tracked keywords, seats, credits), the trial and cancellation terms, and recent user reviews, negative ones first. For the four tools with a full review in our Labs, the overall score and the per-criterion scores come straight from that review, so a tool carries the same numbers everywhere on the site.
Moz Pro and Mangools aren't ranked: we couldn't confirm their current prices on an official page. We'd rather rank seven tools we could check than list twenty we couldn't.

Ahrefs
Ahrefs takes the top spot on the strength of its backlink data. When a competitor jumps ahead of you, this is the tool that shows who links to them, which pages earn those links, and which keywords they gained. Its keyword explorer and its Site Audit (170+ checks) sit at the same level.
Its most underrated plan costs nothing. Ahrefs Free needs no card: you verify that you own the site, then get a site audit plus a view of your own backlinks and keywords. There's no Keywords Explorer or Rank Tracker, but for watching your own site it's a lot.
The paid ladder climbs fast. Starter is $29 a month, monthly only, with 200 credits, one user and no exports. Lite, the first real working plan, is $129 a month: 750 tracked keywords, 1,000 credits per user and six months of history. Standard ($249) removes the credit cap and keeps two years of history. There's no free trial, and yearly billing saves up to 17%.
The catch is credits and seats. On Lite, every report you open draws from your quota, and negative reviews keep coming back to credits that vanish faster than expected. Each extra user costs $40 to $80 a month depending on the plan. Competitor traffic numbers are estimates: never compare them to your own analytics.
Tip: start with Ahrefs Free on your own site. Move to Lite only when you need Keywords Explorer, and jump straight to Standard if you'll be researching every day.
- Ahrefs Free for verified sites, no card
- Site Audit with 170+ checks
- Brand tracking in AI answers
- ✓One of the most complete link indexes on the market
- ✓Free tier that's actually useful
- ✓Up to 17% off on yearly billing
- ✗Credit caps on Starter and Lite
- ✗$40 to $80 per extra seat
- ✗No free trial
The best pick when your job is beating specific competitors in organic search. If you also run paid search, Semrush covers more ground for a similar budget.
Semrush
Semrush is the broadest suite here. Beyond core SEO (keywords, rankings, audits, links), it covers Google Ads research, competitor content analysis and, more recently, how your brand shows up in AI assistant answers. If several roles on your team need to share one tool, this is the one.
The entry plan is $199 a month, or $165 a month billed yearly (17% off). It tracks 5 sites and 500 keywords. Pro+ is $299 ($248 yearly) for 15 sites and 1,500 keywords. Advanced, at $549, adds API access and goes up to 40 sites. A free account exists too: one demo project and 10 reports a day, no card. It's for learning the interface, not for doing the work.
The biggest drawback isn't the product. Negative reviews cluster around billing: a 7-day trial that rolls into a paid plan if you forget, a multi-step cancellation flow, and no refunds on monthly plans. The entry price is also steep for a freelancer running one or two sites.
Tip: if you start the trial, put the end date in your calendar with a reminder the day before. Cancellation takes several steps, so don't leave it to the last hour, and screenshot the confirmation.
- SEO, PPC and content in one place
- AI visibility tracking
- Free account with 10 reports a day
- ✓Widest feature coverage on this list
- ✓Strong keyword research
- ✓17% off on yearly billing
- ✗$199 a month to start
- ✗Trial that turns into a subscription
- ✗API only on Advanced
The most complete option for a team doing both SEO and paid search. For one site on a tight budget, SE Ranking does the job for far less.
SE Ranking
SE Ranking covers the same core jobs as the two leaders: keyword research, rank tracking, site audits, backlinks and competitor analysis. Its edge is volume for the money. The Core plan tracks 2,000 keywords a day across 10 projects, four times what Semrush's entry plan allows.
Heads up: the pricing changed in 2026, and plenty of comparison posts still quote the old Essential, Pro and Business plans. Today Core is $129 a month, or $103.20 billed yearly (20% off). Growth is $279 ($223.20 yearly) for 30 projects and 5,000 keywords. The 14-day trial asks for no card and includes 10 projects, 750 keywords and 20 AI prompts a day.
The weak spot, based on user reviews: rank tracking is sometimes described as unreliable, and support can be hard to reach during outages. Not a dealbreaker, but worth checking during the trial.
Tip: use the 14 days to track your 50 most important keywords in SE Ranking and in Search Console side by side. If both tell the same story, you can commit with confidence.
- 2,000 tracked keywords on Core
- 14-day trial with no card
- 20% off on yearly billing
- ✓Lots of tracking for the price
- ✓Feature set close to the leaders
- ✓No surprise charge after the trial
- ✗Rank tracking reported as uneven at times
- ✗Support hard to reach, per reviews
- ✗Older pricing still circulates online
The most sensible all-in-one if Ahrefs and Semrush are out of budget. If backlinks are your main job, Ahrefs still has the edge.
Ubersuggest
Ubersuggest is the simplest tool on this list. Type a keyword or a domain and you get keyword ideas, a site audit and rank tracking, without digging through fifty menus. If SEO is one of ten hats you wear, that simplicity is the point.
Individual costs €29 a month, Business €49 and Enterprise €99, with more users and projects as you go up. What sets it apart is the lifetime plan at €290, paid once. That's about ten months of the monthly price: after that, it's pure savings.
The trade-off: the data is shallower than Ahrefs or Semrush, and tracked-keyword limits fill up quickly. Reviews also mention a steady stream of marketing emails after sign-up. Support is the lowest-rated part of our full review.
Tip: start on the free tier and the free Chrome extension. If you're still opening it after three months, the lifetime plan becomes the cheapest option on this page.
- Lifetime plan at €290, no renewal
- Up and running in minutes
- Free Chrome extension
- ✓Cheapest of the full tools
- ✓Clean interface for beginners
- ✓No-subscription option
- ✗Shallower data than the leaders
- ✗Low tracked-keyword limits
- ✗Pushy marketing emails
A good way in with no subscription. Once you track more than a few hundred keywords, SE Ranking goes much further.
Screaming Frog
Screaming Frog is a desktop app. It crawls your site the way Google does, page by page, and lists everything that's off: broken links, redirect chains, missing or duplicate titles and descriptions, pages buried too deep, oversized images. It has been the default technical audit tool for years.
The free version crawls up to 500 URLs, which covers a brochure site or a small blog. Past that, a license is £199 a year with no URL cap. That's under £17 a month for a tool agencies open every day, one of the best price-to-value ratios on this page.
The limits: it only audits. No keyword research, no rank tracking, no competitor data. The interface is technical and takes a while to learn.
Tip: run the free version on your site before paying for anything else. Fixing broken links and duplicate titles is often the fastest win an audit gives you.
- Free up to 500 URLs
- Yearly license with no URL cap
- Runs on your own computer
- ✓Best value for technical audits
- ✓Precise list of every issue
- ✓One yearly payment
- ✗Audits only, no keywords or rankings
- ✗Technical interface
- ✗License renews every year
A must for technical audits, best paired with a keyword tool. If you'd rather have the audit inside a suite, Ahrefs and SE Ranking include one.
Surfer
Surfer doesn't replace a full SEO tool: it sits next to one. Pick a query and its editor shows which topics, terms and length the pages already ranking for it have. You write or rewrite against a score that climbs as your draft covers the subject.
Discovery is $49 a month billed yearly for 120 documents and one seat. Standard is $99. The features that matter for a real content strategy (internal linking, content ideas, coverage-gap analysis) only unlock on Pro, at $182. Monthly billing costs about 17% more. The 7-day trial needs a card.
The limits: no full technical audit, no classic rank tracking, and a price that climbs fast once you want the whole toolkit. Chasing the score too literally can also produce keyword-stuffed copy.
Tip: point Surfer at your articles already sitting on page two of Google. That's where better coverage pays off fastest.
- Editor that guides the draft
- Analysis of pages already ranking
- Built-in AI assistant
- ✓Very effective for refreshing articles
- ✓Quick to learn
- ✓Pairs well with another tool
- ✗Key features gated to Pro ($182)
- ✗Trial requires a card
- ✗Not a full SEO tool
A strong add-on if you publish a lot. As your only tool, go with a suite like Semrush or SE Ranking.
Google Search Console
Google Search Console lands last in our scoring because it tells you nothing about competitors and its support is a help center and a forum. Yet it's the first tool to install, before you even shortlist the others. It holds the only real Google data about your site: the queries you show up for, clicks, impressions, average position, indexed pages and detected errors.
Every other tool here estimates your traffic from models. Search Console measures it. When an Ahrefs or Semrush estimate doesn't match your numbers, Search Console is the one that's right.
The limits: no competitor data, and no keyword ideas beyond what you already rank for. It doesn't replace a research tool. It keeps that tool honest.
Tip: in the Performance report, filter for queries where your average position sits between 8 and 20. Those pages are almost on page one, and improving them pays faster than chasing brand-new keywords.
- Real Google data, not estimates
- Queries, clicks, impressions and positions
- Indexing and error alerts
- ✓Free
- ✓The source of truth for your Google traffic
- ✓Connects to most other tools
- ✗No competitor data
- ✗No new keyword ideas
- ✗Support limited to documentation
Not enough on its own, but the tool that makes every other one make sense. Set it up today, even if you buy nothing else.
What an SEO tool really costs, past the sticker price
The price on the homepage is rarely what you end up paying. Three line items push the bill up, and almost none of the top-ranking comparison posts add them together. Here's how to spot them before you commit.
Extra seats
Credits that run out
Trials that renew
- Count how many people will log in, and add the extra-seat price.
- Check whether the plan runs on credits, and how many a typical report uses.
- Read the trial terms: card or no card, and the exact first charge date.
- Put the trial end date in your calendar on day one, and keep the cancellation confirmation.
- Compare yearly and monthly: 17% to 20% off is common, but you're locked in.
- Always check traffic estimates against your Search Console data before acting on them.
Four budgets, four setups that work
One tool rarely covers everything. The better question isn't which tool, but which combination fits your budget. Here are the four tiers we'd recommend, from free to a full team.

$0 a month: the free foundation

SEO tools · FAQ
Is there a free SEO tool that's actually enough?
For a small site, yes, if you combine a few. Google Search Console gives you real data, Ahrefs Free audits your site and shows your backlinks, and Screaming Frog crawls 500 URLs for free. What free tools lack is keyword research at volume and competitor analysis. How much does an SEO tool cost per month?
Anywhere from $0 to over $1,000. Simple tools start around €29 (Ubersuggest). Full suites start near $103 (SE Ranking billed yearly), $129 (Ahrefs Lite) or $165 (Semrush billed yearly). Always add the cost of extra seats before comparing.Semrush or Ahrefs: which one should I pick?
Ahrefs if your work centers on backlinks and organic competitors. Semrush if the same tool also needs to handle paid search and content. At a similar budget, Ahrefs wins on its free tier for your own site, Semrush on breadth. What's the cheapest real alternative to Ahrefs?
SE Ranking. Its Core plan costs $103.20 a month billed yearly and tracks 2,000 keywords, against 750 on Ahrefs Lite. Its link data is less deep, so if backlinks are your core job, pair it with Ahrefs Free on your own site.Do Ahrefs credits run out?
On Starter and Lite, yes. Starter includes 200 credits a month and Lite 1,000 per user, and each report you open uses some. Standard and above have no credit cap. If you run out often, moving up a plan can cost less than juggling limits. How accurate are SEO tools' traffic estimates?
They give you a ballpark, not a number. Ahrefs, Semrush and SE Ranking model traffic from rankings and click-through curves. For your own site, only Search Console measures real Google traffic. For competitors, compare trends, never raw figures.Which SEO tools track visibility in ChatGPT and AI answers?
Several suites have added it. Ahrefs tracks your brand in AI answers, Semrush includes AI prompts in its plans, and SE Ranking gives 20 a day during its trial. It's a young metric: read it as a trend, not an exact measure.Do I need Screaming Frog if I already pay for Ahrefs or Semrush?
Not always. Both suites include a site audit that covers the basics. Screaming Frog earns its place on large or complex sites, where you need full control over the crawl. Its free version, capped at 500 URLs, is enough to decide.
