What is the best social media management tool in 2026?

A good tool lets you publish everywhere, reply in one place and see what works, without paying a fortune per person.

You post on Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, TikTok or X, and switching between apps eats your week. A social media management tool bundles three jobs: scheduling posts, an inbox for comments and DMs, and analytics. The problem is that every vendor bills differently: per user, per profile, per channel or per brand. Two tools with the same sticker price can cost your team one time or ten times as much.

The short answer. Agorapulse is the most complete for a small team that replies as much as it posts, from $79 per user. Metricool is the best value, from €16 a month for 5 brands, with a real free plan. Buffer is the simplest way to publish, at $5 per channel. Sprout Social is the most powerful, and the most expensive. Hootsuite still has the broadest legacy footprint, but its reviews have turned harsh.

What most lists skip: a tool's price depends on how many people and profiles you have, not on the starting price. We ran every tool through real scenarios and wrote down each one's limit. Need a tool for a specific role? Our picks for agencies, for community managers and for small businesses go further.

How we scored

How we compared and rated

This page answers one question: which tool should a business use to run its social media? It covers the market you actually meet when you search, including the big names our profile-based picks did not rank: Agorapulse, Metricool, Buffer, Hootsuite and Sprout Social.

We read each vendor's official pricing page, then user reviews on review platforms and in practitioner communities. We compared the tools without opening accounts with them. Vista Social, SocialBee, Iconosquare and Later keep the exact score from their full review: one value per tool across the site.

Weights follow what hurts most when you get it wrong. Features weigh the most, because switching tools means reconnecting every account and rescheduling every post. Value for money comes next, calculated on your real team rather than the starting price.

Best all-round for small teams

Agorapulse

4.2/5

Agorapulse is the tool reviewers keep crediting with saving them time, and the reason is its unified inbox. Comments, DMs and mentions from every network land in one place, and you work through them like email. If your team does community moderation or customer care on Facebook, Instagram or LinkedIn, that inbox is the whole point.

Pricing is per user. Standard is $79 a month billed yearly, or $99 month to month. Professional is $119 ($149), Advanced $149 ($199). Every extra user pays the same as the first one, so three people on Advanced cost $5,364 a year. The first three plans cap you at 10 social profiles; only Custom, on quote, removes the cap.

Moving up buys you concrete things. Data history goes from 6 months on Standard to 12, then 24. First-response time from support drops from under 6 hours to under 1 hour on Advanced. Advanced also adds shared calendars and CSV bulk scheduling, up to 200 posts at once. The AI writing assistant, AI alt text and AI report summaries come with every plan.

The catch is the per-seat price. In community threads, it is the top complaint, right behind ease of use as the top compliment. The 10-profile cap also squeezes small agencies, with no self-serve tier above it. The free plan is gone, X is now a paid add-on, and some users report expired account tokens and posts that never went out.

Tip: the 30-day trial needs no card. Connect your real accounts and push a full week of messages through the inbox. That is where Agorapulse earns its price over cheaper tools.

Standout features
  • Unified inbox across networks
  • ROI reporting
  • 30-day trial with no card
+Pros
  • ✓Ease of use praised by users
  • ✓Support under 1 hour on Advanced
  • ✓AI assistant on every plan
−Cons
  • ✗Per-user price triples with a team of three
  • ✗10 profiles max below Custom
  • ✗No free plan, X costs extra
Verdict

The pick for a team that replies as much as it posts. If you work solo and mostly publish, Metricool or Buffer will cost a fraction of it.

Best value

Metricool

4.2/5

Metricool is built by a Spanish company based in Castellón, and it gives you the most for the money in this list. It bills per brand, not per profile or per seat: a brand bundles every network for one business or one client. Starter covers 5 brands for €16 a month billed yearly. At that price, most US tools sell you one seat for a week.

The plans stay readable. Starter is €16 yearly or €20 monthly for 5 brands, €29 or €37 for 10. Advanced starts at €43 (€54 monthly) for 15 brands and climbs to €130 for 50. Advanced is where team and client management, roles, approvals, the Looker Studio connector and API access for Zapier or Make come in. AI credits go from 20 to 35 per brand per month.

The free plan is real, with one gap. You get 1 brand, 20 scheduled posts a month, 5 competitors tracked and 30 days of history. LinkedIn and X are not included. If your B2B presence lives on LinkedIn, the free plan will not help you.

Reviewers call it easy and reliable, and nonprofits like its pricing. The complaints are about support: a slow chatbot before you reach a human. A few users also see posts marked as published that never appear on the network. TikTok automations need a Business account.

Tip: if you have a team, skip Starter in your comparison. Collaboration starts on Advanced at €43, and that price does not change with headcount.

Standout features
  • Billed per brand, not per seat
  • Competitor tracking on the free plan
  • Looker Studio connector on Advanced
+Pros
  • ✓5 brands for €16 a month
  • ✓Usable free plan for Instagram and Facebook
  • ✓Whole team on Advanced with no per-seat fee
−Cons
  • ✗No LinkedIn or X on the free plan
  • ✗Chatbot before human support
  • ✗Some posts flagged as published when they were not
Verdict

The default pick if budget matters. If your day is spent answering a community, Agorapulse's inbox is worth the gap.

Simplest for publishing

Buffer

4.0/5

Buffer does one job and does it well: scheduling posts. You learn it in ten minutes, and it is where unhappy Hootsuite and Sprout Social users most often land, for the price and the lighter interface. One former Hootsuite customer wrote in a public review that they actually like Buffer better.

Its pricing is the clearest here: you pay per channel, meaning per connected account. Essentials is $5 per channel per month for one user. Team is $10 per channel with unlimited users. Five channels on Essentials run $25 a month. Fifteen channels on Team, for the whole team, $150 at most, since a discount applies past 10 channels.

The free plan is the most honest on one point: LinkedIn and X are included. You get 3 channels, 1 user, 10 scheduled posts per channel and 5 AI reply suggestions a week. For a business owner posting on LinkedIn twice a week, that is enough.

The limit: Buffer is not a customer care tool. Analytics and message handling stay light next to Agorapulse or Sprout Social. Reviews also mention failed Pinterest posts. And the pricing page shows both "2 months free" and a yearly price equal to twelve monthly payments, so check the final total before you pay.

Tip: start free on your 3 busiest accounts. Move to Team only when a second person needs to publish, since that is when users become unlimited.

Standout features
  • Per-channel pricing, no seat fees on Team
  • LinkedIn and X on the free plan
  • Fastest setup in this list
+Pros
  • ✓$5 per channel on Essentials
  • ✓Unlimited users on Team
  • ✓A free plan you can actually use
−Cons
  • ✗Light inbox and analytics
  • ✗Failed Pinterest posts reported
  • ✗Bill climbs fast past 20 channels
Verdict

The best tool if your job is publishing, not community management. Once moderation matters, look at Agorapulse.

Most profiles for $99

Vista Social

3.9/5

Vista Social bets on volume: its first plan includes 15 social profiles and 2 users for $99 a month, or $950 a year, about $79 a month. At the same price, Agorapulse gives you 10 profiles and one user. If you run several brands, you see the gap in month one.

Add-ons are billed separately, so read them before you sign. X costs $29 more a month. Web and press listening adds $75. Zapier and Make connections only come with Advanced at $199, and white label (reports under your own logo) with Scale at $449.

Our full review rates it 3.9 out of 5. Features (4.3) and value for money (4.2) pull the score up. Integrations (3.5) pull it down, precisely because automation connectors sit on pricier plans.

The limit: the bill grows through add-ons. An agency that needs X, its automation tools and branded reports jumps from $99 to $449 fast. List what you truly need before picking a plan.

Tip: torn between this and SocialBee or Later? Our SocialBee vs Vista Social and Vista Social vs Later breakdowns go plan by plan.

Standout features
  • 15 profiles and 2 users on the first plan
  • Web and press listening add-on
  • White label on Scale
+Pros
  • ✓Lots of profiles for the price
  • ✓About $79 a month billed yearly
  • ✓Features rated 4.3 out of 5
−Cons
  • ✗X costs $29 extra
  • ✗Zapier and Make from $199
  • ✗Add-ons push the bill up
Verdict

The right math if two people manage many profiles. If you need Make or Zapier, budget $199 from day one.

Most powerful for larger teams

Sprout Social

3.9/5

Sprout Social is the most complete tool in this list, and the most expensive. Practitioners in community threads put it plainly: the most powerful, but probably the most expensive. Publishing, inbox, deep analytics, social listening: it is all there, with a polish cheaper tools lack.

Pricing is per seat. Essentials is $79 a month billed yearly or $99 monthly, Standard $199, Professional $299 and Advanced $399. The trap is profiles: only 5 on Essentials and Standard. They become unlimited from Professional. Three people on Professional cost $897 a month billed yearly.

Its AI is called Trellis. Every seat gets 100 credits a month. Beyond that, Trellis Plus costs $28 per seat per month billed yearly, or $35 monthly. On a team of five, that is $140 more each month.

The limit is obvious: price. For a small business, Sprout often costs ten times what Metricool does for a similar use. And the 5-profile cap on the first two plans pushes you toward Professional quickly. The 30-day trial with no card at least lets you judge for yourself.

Tip: count your profiles before you sign. If you have more than 5, compare Professional directly with Agorapulse Advanced, not Essentials.

Standout features
  • Deepest analytics and listening here
  • Unlimited profiles from Professional
  • Trellis AI with 100 credits per seat
+Pros
  • ✓Most complete tool
  • ✓30-day trial with no card
  • ✓Unlimited profiles from $299 per seat
−Cons
  • ✗Highest per-seat price
  • ✗Only 5 profiles on the first two plans
  • ✗Trellis Plus costs extra
Verdict

The pick when budget is not the constraint and several teams share the tool. Under five people, Agorapulse covers the essentials for far less.

Most features for a small budget

SocialBee

3.8/5

SocialBee gives a lot for little: our full review rates its features 4.4 out of 5, the second-best score on that criterion here after Sprout Social. Support follows at 4.2. For $29 a month, Bootstrap covers 5 profiles and 1 user.

The plans climb in even steps. Accelerate is $49 for 10 profiles. Pro is $99, then agency plans follow: Pro50 at $179, Pro100 at $329 and Pro150 at $449. Each extra seat adds $10 a month, far less than a user at Agorapulse or Sprout Social.

Its 3.8 overall hides two weak spots. Ease of use (3.4) is the lowest here after Hootsuite: setting everything up takes time. Value for money (3.3) drops as you climb into the agency plans.

The limit: this is not the tool for a team that wants to be live within the hour. If simplicity comes first, Buffer is faster. For a closer look, read SocialBee vs Later.

Tip: at $10 per extra seat, SocialBee gets interesting for a team of three on Accelerate. Run that math against the per-user pricing at the top of this list.

Standout features
  • Features rated 4.4 out of 5
  • Extra seat for $10 a month
  • Agency plans up to Pro150
+Pros
  • ✓Bootstrap at $29 for 5 profiles
  • ✓Support rated 4.2 out of 5
  • ✓Cheap extra seats
−Cons
  • ✗Longer setup than average
  • ✗Value drops on larger plans
  • ✗No free plan
Verdict

A good fit for a demanding solo user who wants many features for $29 to $49. If you just need scheduling, Buffer is enough.

Best for French-speaking teams

Swello

3.8/5

Swello is a French tool, and it shows where US tools do not look: euro pricing before VAT, invoices filed on Chorus Pro for the French public sector, and a French-speaking support team. Aggregated reviews praise its simplicity and how quickly that team answers.

The free-forever plan is one of the most generous: 5 profiles (one per network, X excluded), 1 user, 40 scheduled posts a month, one media file per post. Medium is €19 a month billed yearly for 1 user and 5 profiles. Large is €59 for 3 users and 10 profiles, Entreprise €99 for 5 users and 15 profiles. Paying yearly gives you two months free.

Run the numbers for three people on 10 profiles: €59 a month at Swello against $237 at Agorapulse Standard. That is the widest gap in this list for a similar use. The AI helps with writing, suggests hashtags and writes image alt text. White-label report exports are included.

The limit: X costs extra, from €8 per profile. Users also find small plans a bit pricey for the number of profiles, and X analytics weak. The interface and support are French first, which makes it a niche pick outside French-speaking teams.

Tip: if you work with French public bodies, Swello is one of the few tools here that files invoices on Chorus Pro.

Standout features
  • Euro pricing, Chorus Pro invoicing
  • Free forever with 5 profiles
  • French-speaking support
+Pros
  • ✓3 users and 10 profiles for €59
  • ✓White-label exports
  • ✓Simple setup
−Cons
  • ✗X is a paid add-on
  • ✗Few profiles on small plans
  • ✗French-first interface and support
Verdict

The pick for French-speaking teams that want euro billing. For an international agency, Agorapulse or Vista Social go deeper.

Best for Instagram analytics

Iconosquare

3.7/5

Iconosquare is an analytics tool first. Our full review rates its features 4.5 out of 5, driven by detailed stats on Instagram and other visual networks. If you want to know which format, which hour and which type of post earns engagement, this is its home turf.

It starts free, then Starter costs €9 a month for 1 user and 3 profiles, or €15 for 5 profiles. Launch is €33. Scale starts at €69 and reaches €219 for 20 profiles. Custom starts at €116 a month billed yearly and brings white label.

Its 3.7 overall comes from two weak spots: value for money (3.2), which drops quickly as profiles add up, and integrations (3.3). Ease of use (3.8) holds up.

The limit: for an agency, the bill grows with profiles, and white label only arrives on Custom. To compare it with a direct rival, read Vista Social vs Iconosquare or Later vs Iconosquare.

Tip: start on Starter at €15 with 5 profiles. You will know quickly whether the analytics change your decisions before paying for Scale.

Standout features
  • Features rated 4.5 out of 5
  • Free plan to start
  • Detailed stats by format
+Pros
  • ✓Starter from €9 a month
  • ✓Some of the sharpest Instagram analytics
  • ✓Free plan
−Cons
  • ✗Price climbs fast with profiles
  • ✗White label only on Custom
  • ✗Integrations rated 3.3 out of 5
Verdict

The right tool if Instagram numbers drive your choices. For community inbox work, Agorapulse fits better.

The pioneer, now pricey

Hootsuite

3.5/5

Hootsuite was the default name for years. Today it has the harshest reviews in this list: on a major review platform, close to seven customers in ten give it one star. Complaints focus on billing, refunds refused after 30 days, chatbot-first support and accounts that disconnect.

The feature set is still solid. Every plan includes AI post and image generation and an assistant called Wisdom. Professional adds smart replies. Standard benchmarks 5 competitors, Professional 20. Approval workflows come with Advanced.

The entry price is the highest: Standard from $99 per user per month, billed yearly only, with 10 social accounts. Professional starts at $199 with unlimited accounts, and Advanced goes up to $399. Three people on Professional pass $7,000 a year. There is no free plan anymore.

The limit: value for money (2.6) and support (2.4), our lowest scores here along with Later. The most common switch you read about in community threads goes from Hootsuite to Buffer or Metricool. If you are considering it, our switch from Hootsuite guide lays out the options.

Tip: if you start the 14-day trial, note the end date and turn off auto-renewal right away. Renewal is the top complaint from unhappy customers.

Standout features
  • Unlimited accounts from Professional
  • Wisdom AI on every plan
  • 20 competitors benchmarked on Professional
+Pros
  • ✓Broad feature set
  • ✓Unlimited accounts above Standard
  • ✓Wide integration choice
−Cons
  • ✗$99 per user to start
  • ✗Very negative billing reviews
  • ✗Hard-to-reach support
Verdict

Keep it if your team already runs on it and needs unlimited accounts. As a new choice, Agorapulse or Sprout Social do better on the same budget.

For planning an Instagram grid

Later

3.0/5

Later is still the tool for visual accounts. The strength users cite: you see how your Instagram grid will look before you publish. For a fashion brand, a shop or a creator, that keeps the feed consistent.

Starter costs $18.75 a month billed yearly for one social set (one profile per network for a single brand). Growth is $37.50 with 180 posts per profile and 2 users. Each extra social set is $11.25 a month, each extra user $3.75. There is no free plan.

Our full review rates it 3.0 out of 5, the lowest score here. Ease of use (3.8) is good, but support (2.2) and value for money (2.4) weigh it down. Some users also complain about a yearly renewal they did not see coming.

The limit: outside Instagram, Later adds little over cheaper tools. If you are leaving, our Later alternatives page lists the options, and Later pricing breaks down every plan.

Tip: turn off auto-renewal as soon as you subscribe. You can switch it back on if the tool works for you.

Standout features
  • Instagram grid preview
  • Extra user for $3.75
  • Starter from $18.75 billed yearly
+Pros
  • ✓Built around Instagram
  • ✓Easy to learn
  • ✓Low entry price
−Cons
  • ✗Support rated 2.2 out of 5
  • ✗No free plan
  • ✗Yearly renewal catches users off guard
Verdict

Pick it only if your business lives on Instagram and the grid preview matters. Otherwise, Metricool or Buffer do more for less.

Real cost

What a social media management tool really costs each month

Five ways to bill: per user (Agorapulse, Hootsuite, Sprout Social), per channel (Buffer), per brand (Metricool), per bundle of profiles and users (Vista Social, SocialBee, Swello), or per social set (Later). Here is what that means in two real scenarios, at official prices before tax, billed yearly.

Solo, with 5 profiles

Metricool: €16 on Starter (or free if LinkedIn and X do not matter). Iconosquare: €15 for 5 profiles. Later: $18.75. Buffer: $25 on Essentials. SocialBee: $29 on Bootstrap. Agorapulse: $79. Sprout Social: $79. Hootsuite: $99. For similar use, the spread runs from one to six.

Three people, 15 profiles

Metricool: €43 on Advanced, whatever the headcount. Buffer: $150 at most on Team. Agorapulse: $237 on Standard, but capped at 10 profiles. Hootsuite: $597 on Professional, since Standard stops at 10 accounts. Sprout Social: $897 on Professional, the first plan without a 5-profile cap.

Add-ons that change the bill

X is no longer included everywhere: $29 more at Vista Social, an add-on at Agorapulse, missing from Metricool's free plan. Advanced AI too: Trellis Plus adds $28 per seat at Sprout Social. List your networks and AI needs before you compare.

  • Every network you use, LinkedIn and X included, is on the plan
  • The price is calculated on your real headcount
  • The profile cap still fits your accounts in 12 months
  • Auto-renewal is noted or turned off during the trial
  • The inbox was tried with real messages if you moderate

Other options worth knowing

Two tools come up often without entering the ranking: one serves a narrow use, the other only covers two networks.

01

Planable: for client sign-off on posts

Approvals

Planable focuses on collaboration and approvals. Basic is $33 per workspace per month (60 posts a month, optional approval), Pro $49 (150 posts, mandatory approval available), Enterprise on quote with multi-level approvals. Users are unlimited. The trial gives you 50 posts in total with no time limit, but without X. It is not ranked because it has no inbox and light analytics.

Tips

Choose and run your tool without nasty surprises

Settings and traps pulled from user reviews, the kind that change your bill or whether your posts go out.

01

Count profiles and people before comparing

Pricing

The starting price tells you nothing. Write down how many people publish and how many accounts you run, today and a year from now. With three people, a per-user tool costs three times its sticker price; a per-brand tool like Metricool does not move.

Example
Agorapulse Advanced for 3: $5,364 a year
02

Check LinkedIn and X on the plan you want

Coverage

Metricool's free plan leaves out LinkedIn and X. Swello's leaves out X. Vista Social charges $29 a month for X. Buffer includes both on its free plan. If your business runs on LinkedIn, that detail decides for you.

03

Reconnect accounts before tokens expire

Reliability

Networks regularly cut third-party access. When the connection token expires, scheduled posts stop going out, often without warning. Reviews report it at Agorapulse, Metricool and Buffer. Turn on failure notifications and reconnect at the first warning.

Habit

04

Turn off auto-renewal during the trial

Billing

Complaints about Hootsuite and Later often involve an unexpected yearly renewal, and Hootsuite refuses refunds after 30 days. Note the end date when you sign up and switch off auto-renewal. You can turn it back on if you like the tool.

FAQ

Your questions about social media management tools

  • What is the best free social media management tool?

Buffer if LinkedIn or X matter to you: its free plan includes both, on 3 channels with 10 scheduled posts per channel. Metricool if you mostly post on Instagram, Facebook or TikTok: 1 brand, 20 posts a month and 5 competitors tracked. Iconosquare also has a free plan for analytics.

  • Is Hootsuite still worth it?

Only if your team already runs on it and needs unlimited accounts. It starts at $99 per user per month billed yearly, has no free plan, and its public reviews are the harshest in this list, mostly over billing and support. Most teams switching away land on Buffer or Metricool.

  • What is the cheapest alternative to Hootsuite or Sprout Social?

Metricool: €43 a month on Advanced covers a whole team and 15 brands, where three Sprout Social seats on Professional cost $897. For publishing only, Buffer Team costs $10 per channel with unlimited users.

  • Which social media tool is best for a small business?

Metricool or Buffer for most small businesses: under $25 a month for 5 accounts. Pick Agorapulse once you need a shared inbox for comments and DMs. Our dedicated small business ranking goes deeper.

  • Buffer vs Hootsuite: which one should I pick?

Buffer for scheduling at a low price: $5 per channel on Essentials, unlimited users on Team. Hootsuite for a broad suite with unlimited accounts from Professional, at $199 per user. For a team of three, Hootsuite Professional costs about four times Buffer Team on 15 channels.

  • How much does a social media management tool cost?

From free to about $400 per user per month. Solo, expect €16 to $29. For three people, from €43 at Metricool to nearly $900 at Sprout Social. How the tool bills (per user, channel or brand) matters more than its starting price.

  • Why are my scheduled posts failing?

Most often, the network's connection token expired and the tool lost access. Reconnect the account inside the tool, then turn on failure alerts so you hear about it next time.

  • Should I pay monthly or yearly?

Monthly for the first weeks, yearly once you are sure. Yearly saves about 20% at Agorapulse and Sprout Social. But unexpected renewals are a common complaint, so note the renewal date.
