European web hosting: 5 EU hosts we checked, from the company behind them to the data center

We compared the shared hosting providers most often called European, then checked three things most lists skip: who owns the company, which country's law governs your contract, and what you pay once the intro deal ends.

The short answer: if you want a cheap, no-nonsense European host billed by the month with no lock-in, pick Hetzner (Germany), from €1.60 a month excl. VAT. If you want the best support and generous backups and you can live with a French-language panel, o2switch (France) is the strongest host on this page. If you need a big brand with lots of plans and agency features, OVHcloud (France) is the safe default, as long as you read the renewal price.

Why does "European" matter at all? Mostly because of the CLOUD Act, a US law that lets American courts demand data from any US company, wherever its servers sit. A US host with a Frankfurt data center is still a US company. The flip side also catches people out: some "European" brands sell to US customers through a US subsidiary. IONOS is the clearest case, with ionos.com run by an American entity while the German parent runs the European sites. So we checked each host on three levels: the company that signs your contract, the group that controls it, and the country where your files live. Prices come from each official pricing page, read in 2026. Just want the best host, wherever it is based? See our ranking of the best web hosting.

The ranking

5 European web hosts at a glance

To make this list, a host needs a European parent company and a price you can read on its own site. The "Company and servers" column shows where the group is based and where shared hosting runs. The ranking is editorial: a sponsored slot is always labeled on its profile, and no affiliate link ever changes a score. Scores rank the list; if your team works only in English, Hetzner is the pick we would start with.

Profiles

Each host, checked: owner, servers, real price, catch

For each host we read the pricing page, the technical limits, the backup policy and the legal notice. The number that matters is not the banner price. It's what you pay in year two and year three.

01

o2switch: the best-loved support in France, everything in one city

Top pick

o2switch is a French company based in Clermont-Ferrand, in central France. It runs its own data centers in the same city, with its staff on site. That makes it the cleanest answer on this page to "where is my data and who controls it": one company, one country, one location.

There are three plans. Grow costs €84 excl. VAT a year, so €7 a month. Cloud starts at €22.32 excl. VAT for the first year, or €1.86 a month. Pro is built for busy sites. Resources are spelled out, which is rare in shared hosting: 8 CPU threads and 16 GB of shared memory on Grow, 12 threads and 48 GB on Cloud, 24 and 64 GB on Pro. Backups run daily and are kept 30 days on Grow, 45 on Cloud and 90 on Pro. Cloud and Pro also add 250 GB of Nextcloud storage (a Dropbox-style file space hosted by o2switch) and one free domain renewal.

Support. Phone, email, tickets and live chat, around the clock. Public customer reviews keep coming back to the same point: fast answers from people who know cPanel inside out.

The catch. The site, the panel and the support are in French. If your team does not read French, this is a real cost, not a detail. The first-year price also lasts one year only: renewal is at the "current rate", which is much higher, so budget on three years. Negative reviews mention a few multi-day outages on specific accounts and slow webmail at times.

Tip: use the 30-day no-questions refund to move your site over and check load times before you commit to a 12, 24 or 36-month term.

Best for. A French-speaking business, or a European company that sells into France and wants its site hosted there. Not for an English-only team, or an app that needs root access: compare VPS hosting instead.

OVHcloud: Europe's largest host, as long as you watch renewals

Biggest brand

OVHcloud is a listed French company headquartered in Roubaix, and the largest cloud provider born in Europe. Shared hosting runs in its French data centers. Users on its own forum report that shared plans sit in Gravelines, with no choice of location.

Prices on the French site are low to start with: Starter at €1.59 excl. VAT a month for the first year, then €2.59; Perso at €2.99, then €5.99, with 100 GB and up to 15 sites; Pro at €1.99, then €9.99. That last jump is five times the intro price. OVHcloud publishes an observed availability of 99.9%.

The catch. OVHcloud raised shared hosting prices in 2026, applied at renewal, and long-time customers on the official forum were not happy: one reported his Perso plan doubling. Automatic backups are not contractual, so OVHcloud does not promise it can restore your site. Customers who lost data in the 2021 Strasbourg fire without their own copy learned that the hard way. Support is the most frequent complaint about OVHcloud, in every language.

Two forum tips. An OVHcloud representative confirmed you can renew early, up to four years ahead, to lock in the old price before an increase. And keep half your storage free if you ever need to restore a backup: the restore needs room to unpack.

Best for. A tight budget that still wants a big European name, or an agency running many sites from one account. Not for anyone who expects quick, friendly support.

03

Hetzner: the German favorite for honest monthly pricing

No lock-in

Hetzner is a German company, and its web hosting runs in Nuremberg. Developers know it for its servers, but it also sells plain shared hosting, and that offer is the most transparent on this page: the price you see is the price you keep, billed monthly, with no commitment.

The range starts with Webhosting S at €1.60 a month excl. VAT, then M at €4.12, L at €8.32 and XL at €16.72. Every plan comes with unlimited mailboxes, which saves you from paying a separate email provider. Users who have stayed two years or more describe it as flawless, and it keeps coming up as the safe pick for reliable EU hosting on a budget.

The catch. Phone support is only included on the XL plan. On smaller plans you work by email and ticket, which suits developers better than small business owners. The setup fee line next to some plans is shown as €0 but laid out in a confusing way, so check your basket before paying.

Tip: because there is no intro discount, Hetzner often comes out cheapest over three years even when its monthly price looks higher than a $1 promo. Run the sum before you sign up anywhere else.

Best for. A developer, a freelancer or a small business comfortable with tickets, who wants German hosting with a stable bill. Not for someone who wants to call a human on the entry plan.

IONOS: German group, cheapest first year, steep renewal

Cheapest start

IONOS belongs to IONOS Group, headquartered in Montabaur, Germany. It describes its infrastructure as geo-redundant and European. There's a twist that matters for this page: ionos.com, the site US visitors land on, is run by an American subsidiary. If you want a contract with a European entity, sign up through a European IONOS site such as the German, French or Spanish one.

On ionos.com, the Plus plan costs $1 a month for the first year. The renewal is where it hurts: on the French site, the same Plus plan goes from €1 to €11 excl. VAT a month, eleven times the intro price. Plans are monthly with no long commitment, IONOS guarantees 99.99% uptime, and you get 30 days to ask for a refund.

The catch. That renewal multiplier is the biggest on this page. The entry Standard plan also comes with only one mailbox. Choose the plan for year two, not for the banner.

Tip: set a calendar reminder two weeks before your first anniversary. That's when to decide whether to stay at the full price, move down a plan, or migrate.

Best for. A beginner who wants a cheap first year with a well-known brand. Not for anyone who needs to avoid US jurisdiction and signs up on ionos.com without thinking.

Hostinger: Lithuanian, easy to use, priced for a four-year prepay

Easiest

Hostinger is a Lithuanian company founded in 2004. It runs data centers in several countries and lets you pick the location when you set up a site, including Paris (opened in 2022), Germany, Lithuania and the UK. That makes it European by ownership, with EU data available if you choose it.

The Premium plan is $2.49 a month, but only if you prepay 48 months. After that term, the price climbs to roughly four times the intro rate. Email is free for the first year only, and backups on Premium are weekly, not daily.

The catch. Hostinger's own guide to the "best European hosting" ranks Hostinger first. Read any ranking from a host about hosts with that in mind. Also, the location default may not be the one you want: choose an EU data center yourself at setup.

Tip: if you already host with Hostinger and want out, our guide to switching from Hostinger covers the migration step by step.

Best for. A first-time site owner who wants the simplest panel and accepts a long prepay. Not for a business that needs daily backups on the entry plan.

EU vs US

European or American host: what actually changes

Before you pay

How to check a host is really European

A flag on a homepage proves nothing. Checking a dozen hosts, we found the same three traps again and again. Here's how to avoid them in fifteen minutes.

1. The entity that bills you

Open the legal notice or terms and find the company name, its registration number and its address. The site you sign up on decides it: ionos.com bills through a US company, ionos.de through the German parent. Same brand, different law.

2. The group that controls it

A European company can belong to a foreign group, and acquisitions change policies. Gandi, the Paris registrar and host, merged in 2023 into the Dutch-controlled Your.Online group, and bundled email soon became a paid extra.

3. The data center you actually get

Hostinger and many others let you pick a location. If you skip that step, your site may land outside the EU. Always choose the data center yourself, and check it in your panel after setup.

4. Switzerland is not the EU

Infomaniak, based in Geneva, is a respected Swiss host. Switzerland is outside the EU, but the EU recognizes its data protection as adequate, so GDPR transfers are allowed. Fine for most, but check if a tender requires an EU company.

5. Backups: promised or best effort

Read the exact line in the terms. o2switch keeps 30 to 90 days, Hostinger's entry plan backs up weekly, and OVHcloud makes no contractual promise. Keep your own copy elsewhere, whatever the host.

6. The three-year price

Add year one to two years at the renewal price, excluding and including VAT. A $1 plan that renews at eleven times the price costs more than a flat €1.60. Check whether the advertised price needs a 48-month prepay.

  • The name, registration number and country of the company that bills you
  • The parent group, and any recent acquisition
  • The data center city, and whether you must choose it yourself
  • How long backups are kept, and whether that's in the contract
  • The renewal price, with and without VAT
  • The refund window and the minimum term
FAQ

What people ask us about European web hosting

  • What is the best European web hosting in 2026?

For most small sites, Hetzner: a German company, servers in Nuremberg, €1.60 a month excl. VAT with no lock-in. If you read French, o2switch offers better support and daily backups kept up to 90 days. OVHcloud is the safe big-brand choice if you track its renewal prices.

  • Is GDPR-compliant hosting the same as EU hosting?

Not quite. GDPR allows data in the EU or in countries the EU deems adequate, such as Switzerland. A US company can be GDPR compliant on paper and still be bound by the CLOUD Act. If you want to stay clear of US jurisdiction, the company itself must be European, not just its servers.

  • Does a US host with servers in Frankfurt protect my data from US law?

No. The CLOUD Act follows the company that controls the data, not the server's location. A US host can be ordered to hand over data stored in Germany. A European host with no US parent cannot be ordered the same way.

  • Is IONOS a European company?

Yes, IONOS Group is German, based in Montabaur. But ionos.com, the US site, is run by an American subsidiary. For a contract with a European entity, sign up on a European IONOS site, such as ionos.de or ionos.fr.

  • Is Hostinger European?

Yes. Hostinger is a Lithuanian company founded in 2004, so it sits inside the EU. Its data centers include Paris, Germany, Lithuania and the UK, and you choose one at setup. Its entry price requires a 48-month prepay.

  • Is Infomaniak in the EU?

No, Infomaniak is Swiss, based in Geneva, and Switzerland is not an EU member. The EU recognizes Swiss data protection as adequate, so hosting there is fine under GDPR. Check whether a public tender or client contract demands an EU-based company before you pick it.

  • Which European host has the cheapest renewal?

Hetzner, because it has no intro discount: €1.60 a month excl. VAT stays €1.60. Over three years it often beats a $1 first-year promo that renews at full price. For more options, compare our ranking of web hosting for small businesses.

  • Shared hosting or a European VPS?

Shared hosting is enough for a brochure site, a blog or a small store: the host handles the server. A VPS gives you your own virtual machine, more power and more admin work. Hetzner and OVHcloud both sell European VPS plans; see our VPS hosting ranking.
