Photoshop alternative: which app to pick, and how to cancel without the fee
Six apps sorted by use case, a 2026 price comparison and a seven-step exit plan.
The short answer: Affinity if you want the most complete replacement and don't want to pay, Photopea if you need to open a PSD right now from any computer, GIMP if you want open source that also runs on Linux, Pixelmator Pro if you're on a Mac and want a one-time purchase, Krita if you draw more than you retouch, Adobe Express if you mostly make social media graphics. Before you choose, know this: with Adobe, when you cancel matters as much as where you go. We compared these six apps and checked their official US prices in 2026.
The ranking is editorial: a sponsored spot is always labeled on its card, and no affiliate link changes a score.
Why people end up leaving Photoshop
Photoshop is still the industry standard. Print shops, agencies and clients all speak PSD. People rarely leave because a feature is missing. They leave because of the price, the way cancellation works, and everything that stays tied to an Adobe account. Here are the six reasons that keep coming up, with Adobe's own numbers.
A subscription forever, no license to own
Photoshop on its own costs $22.99 a month on an annual plan billed monthly, or $263.88 paid upfront for the year. Over three years, that's close to $800. There's no version you can buy once anymore. Stop paying and the app stops working.
A one-year contract behind a monthly price
The monthly price you see is an annual commitment. After the first 14 days, canceling mid-term costs 50% of the remaining payments. Only the last month of the contract year lets you walk away at no cost. Plenty of people find this out on their credit card statement.
25 AI credits a month, that's it
Generative Fill is what everyone talks about, but the Photoshop plan includes just 25 generative credits a month. The Photography plan ($19.99, with Lightroom) gives you 1,000. Creative Cloud Pro, at $69.99 a month, gives you 4,000.
You're paying full price for occasional use
Lots of subscribers open Photoshop a few times a month: cut out a product shot, resize a banner, open a designer's PSD. At that pace, $22.99 a month mostly pays for features you never touch. Free apps handle those jobs with no contract.
Cancellation ended up in federal court
The FTC sued Adobe over how it disclosed its early termination fee and how hard it made canceling. In 2026, Adobe agreed to pay compensation while denying wrongdoing. The contract terms themselves didn't go away: the 50% fee still applies outside the first 14 days and the final month.
No Photoshop on Linux
Photoshop runs on Windows and macOS, not Linux. If your school, nonprofit or studio is moving to Linux, the question answers itself. GIMP and Krita run there natively, and Photopea works in any browser.
You're leaving because… go to…
There isn't one Photoshop replacement. There's one per job. Usually only one row applies to you. Each card jumps to that app's section.
Free for individuals, Mac and Windows, opens PSDs.

Photoshop alternatives, app by app
For each app: why move to it, who it's for, its limit, how to bring your Photoshop work over, and what it costs. Prices are the ones listed for the US, in dollars.
The apps
Affinity: the most complete replacement, free for individuals
Free, pro layersWhy move to Affinity. Since Canva bought it, Affinity merged its three apps (Photo, Designer, Publisher) into a single app that's free for individuals on Mac and Windows. You get the core of Photoshop: layers, masks, non-destructive adjustment layers, selections, retouching, compositing. All it takes is a free Canva account. Next to $263.88 a year for Photoshop alone, the math is easy.
Who it's for. Freelancers, designers and photographers who do real layer work and want to stop paying without stepping down. One photographer who left Photoshop after 15 years says that five months in, he has "absolutely no desire to go back." The tools are all there; you just have to learn where they live.
Who it's not for. Anyone whose day runs on Photoshop actions and scripts: they don't carry over. Linux users too: Affinity ships for Mac and Windows, with an iPad version announced.
Its limit. The AI tools (generative fill, expand, upscaling) need a paid Canva plan. On the team side, one studio that switched company-wide went back to Adobe two months later, unhappy with support. Your right to use Affinity is tied to your Canva account, so keep it active.
How to migrate. Open your PSDs with File, then Open. By default, Affinity flattens Smart Objects into pixels: before you import anything, go to Settings, then General, and turn on the option that keeps them editable. Adjustment layers are converted to their Affinity equivalents. Check layer effects one by one on your three heaviest files.
- Free
- the whole app, for individuals
- Paid
- AI tools with a paid Canva plan
- Best for
- layer-based editing and compositing
- Limit
- no Photoshop actions, no Linux
Photopea: Photoshop in your browser, for any PSD you receive
Browser, PSDWhy move to Photopea. Photopea deliberately mirrors Photoshop's interface, menus and shortcuts included, and runs in your browser. It opens and saves PSDs with their layers, masks and most layer styles. Processing happens on your machine, so your files aren't uploaded anywhere. Nothing to install, no account needed to start.
Who it's for. People who get PSDs from a designer and need to change a headline, export a layer or tweak a banner. Also locked-down work laptops where you can't install software, and Linux machines.
Who it's not for. Heavy daily retouching. Files with hundreds of layers depend on your RAM and your browser, and users report lag with brushes.
Its limit. The free version is ad-supported, and reviewers say the ads can slow the interface down. A paid plan removes them, but its price only shows inside your account: we couldn't find it on a public page. To work offline, the site has to be loaded first.
How to migrate. Drag your PSD into the window. To keep the format, use File, then Save as PSD. A lesser-known trick: Photopea also opens Affinity files and converts them to layered PSDs, handy when you need to hand work back to someone still on Photoshop.
- Free
- every feature, with ads
- Paid
- ad-free plan, price shown in your account
- Best for
- opening and fixing PSDs
- Limit
- slow on very large files
GIMP: open source, and finally non-destructive since version 3
Open source, LinuxWhy move to GIMP. GIMP is free, open source (GPLv3) and runs on Linux, macOS and Windows. Version 3.0 fixed its oldest weakness: the most common filters stay editable instead of being baked into the layer. It also exports CMYK, the color mode print shops use, to JPEG, TIFF and PSD. The current release in 2026 is 3.2.
Who it's for. Schools, nonprofits and studios moving to Linux, and anyone who wants a tool that doesn't depend on a vendor or an account.
Who it's not for. Designers who swap PSDs back and forth with clients on Photoshop. GIMP opens PSDs but has to flatten some layers, and a file saved back for Photoshop can come back damaged.
Its limit. The learning curve. The most common complaint on forums comes from people trying to bring Photoshop habits over and running into a different logic. Reviewers also call its CMYK and non-destructive workflows weaker than pro suites: non-destructive editing doesn't cover layer masks yet.
How to migrate. Keep Photoshop for the last round trip with clients and start new projects in GIMP. Before you cancel, open your active files in GIMP to spot which layers get flattened, and keep a flattened copy of each.
- Free
- yes, open source, no account
- Paid
- no paid plan
- Best for
- Linux, open source
- Limit
- fragile PSD round trips
Pixelmator Pro: fast editing on a Mac, paid once
Mac, one-timeWhy move to Pixelmator Pro. Now owned by Apple, Pixelmator Pro costs $49.99 once on the Mac App Store, barely two months of Photoshop. It reads more than 750 RAW formats, handles layers and masks, and its AI tools save time with no credits to count: Super Resolution upscaling, automatic background removal, smart selection.
Who it's for. Mac users who retouch, cut out and export fast: product photos, website images, slides. Apple also sells Creator Studio at $12.99 a month or $129 a year, bundled with Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro, shareable with up to six family members and required for the iPad version.
Who it's not for. Any team with a Windows machine: it's Mac and iPad only.
Its limit. PSDs open and export, but Pixelmator Pro isn't built for daily exchange of complex files with a studio that lives in Photoshop.
How to migrate. Use the 30-day Creator Studio trial to open your real PSDs before you buy. If everything comes through, the one-time purchase is the cheapest option over time.
- Free
- 30-day trial through Creator Studio
- Paid
- $49.99 once, or $12.99/month
- Best for
- Mac, quick edits
- Limit
- Mac and iPad only
Krita: for drawing and painting, not for photo retouching
IllustrationWhy move to Krita. If you mostly used Photoshop to draw with a tablet, Krita does it better for zero dollars. It's free and open source "forever," with many brush engines, drawing assistants, stroke stabilizers and frame-by-frame animation. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux.
Who it's for. Illustrators, comic artists, game developers and art students.
Who it's not for. Photo retouching. Krita deliberately left out part of the advanced photo tools to focus on painting. To cut out a product or fix a portrait, pick Affinity or GIMP.
Its limit. The Steam and Microsoft Store versions cost money, yet they're identical to the free download on the official site. The developers themselves say donating directly is the better way to support them. Download it from krita.org.
How to migrate. Open your work in progress and check the layers before you uninstall Photoshop. For brushes, don't try to bring everything: rebuild the five you actually use from Krita's own settings.
- Free
- yes, open source, on krita.org
- Paid
- store versions, identical and unnecessary
- Best for
- illustration, digital painting
- Limit
- basic photo retouching
Adobe Express: stay with Adobe without paying for Photoshop
Social mediaWhy move to Adobe Express. If your Photoshop use comes down to Instagram posts, LinkedIn graphics or newsletter headers, you're paying for a retouching tool to do layout. Adobe Express covers that with ready-made templates. The free plan includes 5 GB of storage. Premium costs $9.99 a month with no annual contract and includes 250 generative credits a month, ten times what Photoshop alone gives you.
Who it's for. Marketers, shop owners and freelancers who produce graphics in volume without complex layers.
Who it's not for. Detailed photo retouching and layer compositing: Express doesn't replace Photoshop there.
Its limit. You stay with Adobe, with an account and templates that live on its servers. If the whole point is leaving the Adobe ecosystem, this isn't your exit. Our guide to leaving Canva compares Express with similar tools.
How to migrate. Nothing to convert: upload your images and logo, and save your colors in the brand kit.
- Free
- yes, 5 GB of storage
- Paid
- Premium $9.99/month, no contract
- Best for
- social media graphics
- Limit
- no detailed layer retouching

Leave Photoshop in seven steps
Order matters. Step one keeps you from paying a fee for nothing. The rest keep you from reopening a broken client file six months from now.
The steps
Find your renewal date and the no-fee window
Day 1Go to your Adobe account, under Plans, and write down your plan's renewal date. Three cases. Within 14 days of signing up: full refund. During the final month of the contract year: no fee. Anywhere in between: 50% of the remaining payments, about $69 with six months left at $22.99. In that case, set a reminder a month before renewal and prepare your exit until then.

List what you really do in Photoshop
ChoiceTake your last 30 files and sort them: photo retouching, layer compositing, social graphics, illustration, opening PSDs you receive. That list picks the tool for you, using the table above. Many people find they need two free apps instead of one paid one: Affinity to create, Photopea for incoming files.

Open your three most complex PSDs in the new app
Before paying anythingPick files with Smart Objects, adjustment layers, layer styles and live text. Open them in the new app and compare on screen with Photoshop still running. In Affinity, turn on the setting that keeps Smart Objects editable first. Write down everything that changes: that's your fix list.

Archive your files in open formats
Takes longestFor every finished project, keep the original PSD and add a flattened TIFF or high-res PNG. Other apps can read the PSD, but not always identically: the flattened version guarantees you can still deliver the exact result. Pull down whatever sits in your Creative Cloud storage too: after you cancel, it drops to 5 GB free.

Track down the Adobe Fonts in your projects
Easy to missAdobe Fonts only work while your subscription is active. When you cancel, they're removed from your computer and your files fall back to a substitute font. List the fonts in your active projects, then buy a license or swap them for an open-license font before you go.

Write down your actions and brushes
ProductivityPhotoshop actions (ATN files) don't import into Affinity, GIMP or Pixelmator Pro. Open each one in Photoshop, copy its steps into a document, then rebuild the ones you use every week in your new app. Do the same for your favorite brushes.

What makes a Photoshop exit go wrong
The same mistakes show up on Adobe's community forum and on open-source forums alike. None of them are technical. They're all about doing things in the wrong order.
Canceling at the wrong time
Canceling in month four of an annual plan costs half of the eight months left. Waiting for the final month costs nothing. The date matters more than the tool.
Checking with a simple file
A three-layer PSD opens anywhere. The trouble comes from Smart Objects, layer styles and live text. Check with your heaviest files.
Forgetting about fonts
A client file reopened after you cancel shows a substitute font, and nobody notices until it's printed. List your Adobe Fonts before you leave.
Picking a painting app to retouch photos
Krita is excellent for drawing and average for product cutouts. Choose based on your actual work, not the most-shared list.
Sending GIMP-edited PSDs back to clients
A PSD re-saved by GIMP can lose layers when reopened in Photoshop. If your client is on Photoshop, deliver a TIFF or a PSD from Affinity or Photopea.
Leaving files in Adobe's storage
After you cancel, your storage drops to 5 GB. Anything beyond that is only recoverable for a limited time. Download everything before you click.
- Plan renewal date written down
- Real use cases listed (retouching, compositing, graphics, drawing)
- Three complex PSDs opened in the new app

- Actions written down, brushes rebuilt

Photoshop alternative: frequently asked questions
Is there a free version of Photoshop?
Only the 7-day trial, which turns into a paid plan unless you cancel before it ends. Sites offering a "free" full download outside Adobe are pirated, illegal and often bundled with malware. For free long-term use, Affinity, GIMP, Photopea and Krita are legal with no time limit.
What is the closest free program to Photoshop?
For depth of features, Affinity: layers, masks, non-destructive adjustments and PSD import, on Mac and Windows. For the interface, Photopea, which copies Photoshop's menus and shortcuts in your browser. Plenty of people use both.
Is Affinity really free, and for how long?
Yes for individuals, with no time limit, using a free Canva account. Only the AI tools need a paid Canva plan. Businesses that want single sign-on and schools go through a dedicated offer. Since your right to use it is tied to your Canva account, keep that account active.
How do I open a PSD file without Photoshop?
Photopea opens it in your browser with nothing to install. Affinity opens it too, once you turn on the setting that keeps Smart Objects editable. GIMP opens it but flattens some layers along the way.
How do I cancel Photoshop without the early termination fee?
There are two windows: the first 14 days after signing up, with a full refund, or the final month of your contract year. In between, Adobe charges 50% of the remaining payments. If you want to pay monthly with no commitment, pick the more expensive month-to-month plan when you subscribe.
Which Photoshop alternative has generative fill?
Affinity offers generative fill and expand for paid Canva subscribers. Pixelmator Pro includes AI upscaling and background removal with no credits to count. Within Adobe, Express Premium gives you 250 credits a month for $9.99, versus 25 on Photoshop alone.
What is the best Photoshop alternative for Linux?
GIMP and Krita run natively on Linux and cost nothing. Photopea works in any modern browser. Affinity and Pixelmator Pro aren't available on Linux.
Should I leave Lightroom too?
Not necessarily. If you keep Lightroom, the Photography plan at $19.99 a month includes Photoshop and costs less than Photoshop alone. If you want out of both, our guide to leaving Adobe Lightroom covers the catalog, and our photo editing software ranking compares full setups.
