SwissTransfer alternatives: where to send when 50 GB isn't enough

Six destinations in detail, one per reason to leave, plus an eight-step exit that loses no link.

The short answer: Smash if your files go past 50 GB, MASV if you deliver heavy video and want to pay per gigabyte, GrosFichiers if a client wants EU hosting, Proton Drive for end-to-end encrypted sharing, Dropbox Transfer if your team already pays for Dropbox, TransferNow for links that last up to a year. SwissTransfer is still a great free tool, but its walls are hard: 50 GB per transfer, 250 downloads per link, links that die for good, and no sending at all from 60 countries. We compared the six destinations in this guide on their official limits in 2026.

The real reasons

Why SwissTransfer stops being enough

Credit where due: SwissTransfer is one of the most generous free senders out there. No account, 50 GB per transfer, no monthly cap, files kept in Switzerland. People leave when they hit one of its walls, and those walls are sharp. Here are the six that come up most.

A hard 50 GB cap per transfer

The limit covers all files in a transfer combined, and the paid tier doesn't raise it: SwissTransfer Pro stays at 50 GB. A two-hour 4K export or a full 3D project backup blows past that, and you're left splitting archives.

250 downloads per link on the free plan

Plenty for one client. For a press kit sent to a list or a file shared in a community, the link runs dry. Unlimited downloads need a paid Infomaniak plan.

No sending from 60 countries

Infomaniak blocks creating a transfer from 60 countries, among them India, China, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Israel, the UAE and Taiwan. A consultant on a job in Bangalore or Mexico City can't send anything. Receiving still works everywhere.

Links that vanish for good

The longest expiry is 30 days on the free plan (60 with kSuite Enterprise). At expiry, files are deleted and the link can't be revived by you or by support. Without an account, you don't even get a send history.

"Download all" stalls at 10 GB

Above 10 GB, the recipient can't grab the whole transfer in one click and downloads files one by one. With fifty video clips, your client spends half an hour clicking, and lets you know about it.

Split reviews on big transfers

Public reviews are polarized: half the ratings are top marks, yet close to four in ten are one star. The same complaints repeat: failed video uploads, dropped connections, slow speeds far from Europe, support tickets left unanswered. Simple sends go fine; for a critical delivery, have a plan B.

The 6 alternatives

SwissTransfer alternatives, tool by tool

For each tool: why switch, who it's for, its catch, how to move from SwissTransfer, and what it costs. Limits are the ones vendors publish in 2026.

01

Smash: no size cap, even on the free plan

No max size

Why switch to Smash. It is the most direct fix for SwissTransfer's 50 GB ceiling. Smash sets no maximum transfer size, even for free, with no account and no card. A 120 GB export goes out as one link instead of three split archives. The catch: up to 2 GB your transfer runs right away; above that it waits in a queue behind paying Pro users.

Who it's for. Video editors, sound studios, 3D and VFX teams, anyone who has already hit SwissTransfer's limit warning. Public reviews rate Smash very high (4.9 out of 5 across more than 40,000 reviews), a sharp contrast with SwissTransfer's split ratings.

Who it's not for. Anyone who needs a link to last a month: a free Smash transfer lives 7 days, against 30 on SwissTransfer. And the free plan stores nothing.

The catch. Pro costs $10 a month, $72 a year or $115.20 for two years, excluding tax; Team costs $25 a month or $180 a year. Pro removes the queue, keeps transfers 30 days and adds 1 TB of storage, a custom subdomain and your logo. Team covers 10 to 50 users with 2 TB. On a yearly plan, Pro works out at $6 a month to never wait in the queue again.

How to move from SwissTransfer. Nothing to migrate: drop your files, copy the link or send it by email. Tip: for a free transfer above 2 GB, start it at the end of the day and tell your client the link will land overnight. If you send over 2 GB every day, that's your cue to go Pro.

MASV: pay per gigabyte for heavy video delivery

Pay as you go

Why switch to MASV. Production teams sending hundreds of gigabytes don't want a plan, they want to pay for what they send. MASV gives you 15 GB free each month, then charges $0.25 per GB. Subscriptions start at $58 a month for 250 GB on a 12-month commitment. There's no 50 GB wall: it's built for full camera cards and final masters.

Who it's for. Post-production houses, agencies delivering to broadcasters, freelance editors who send a big master a few times a month.

Who it's not for. Occasional senders. You need a card on file even for the free 15 GB (with a $10 pre-authorization), and per-GB billing adds up: a 300 GB month costs about $71 after the free allowance.

The catch. Files stay available for 5 days by default, shorter than SwissTransfer's 30. It's a delivery pipe, not storage.

How to move from SwissTransfer. Keep SwissTransfer for anything under 50 GB that's free to send, and use MASV only for the masters above. Tip: set a monthly spending alert on day one so a client's re-download request doesn't surprise you on the invoice.

GrosFichiers: European hosting, 30 recipients, no auto-renewal

Hosted in France

Why switch to GrosFichiers. Some European clients want files hosted in the EU, and Switzerland doesn't tick their box. GrosFichiers stores files on its own servers in France. The free plan sends up to 10 GB, with no sign-up, to 30 recipients at once, with a 14-day link.

Who it's for. Teams working with French or EU public bodies, nonprofits, and anyone sending one folder to a whole board or jury.

Who it's not for. Video teams: 10 GB free is a fifth of SwissTransfer, and paid packs stop at 50 GB per transfer too.

The catch. Paid packs don't lift the size: Standard costs €5 for one month or €30 for a year, Pro €9 for a month or €45 for a year, both at 50 GB per transfer, Pro adding a branded download page and your logo. There's no auto-renewal: you pay for a period, that's it. The tool is little known outside France, so warn your recipient to check spam.

How to move from SwissTransfer. Nothing to install. If you used to send one SwissTransfer link to several people, put them all in one GrosFichiers transfer: each gets an email, and you track one transfer.

Proton Drive: end-to-end encrypted sharing

Privacy

Why switch to Proton Drive. SwissTransfer encrypts files in transit and at rest, but Infomaniak holds the keys. Proton Drive encrypts end to end: only the recipient can open the file, not the provider. The free plan lets you share up to 5 GB, with no per-file size limit or download cap on links, plus optional password and expiry date.

Who it's for. Lawyers, accountants, HR teams, clinics, journalists: anyone sending documents a third party must never read. Proton is a Swiss company too, so you keep the Swiss angle.

Who it's not for. Sending a 40 GB video for free: the 5 GB is total space, not a per-transfer size.

The catch. It's a drive with link sharing, not a one-click sender: you upload, then create the link. To send big, you need Drive Plus, 200 GB for $4.99 a month.

How to move from SwissTransfer. Create a free account, upload the folder, create a password-protected link, and send the password by text, never in the same email as the link. Tip: always set an expiry date, or the link stays open until you delete it.

Dropbox Transfer: if you already pay for Dropbox

Already on Dropbox

Why switch to Dropbox Transfer. If your team already keeps projects in Dropbox, the sending tool is in the plan you pay for. Dropbox Transfer sends a copy of your files without opening your folders: 50 GB per transfer on Plus ($9.99 a month, 2 TB), 100 GB on Standard ($15 per user) and Advanced ($24 per user), up to 250 GB with the Creative Tools add-on. From Standard up, you're past SwissTransfer's ceiling.

Who it's for. Teams that want one subscription to store, send and keep a history in the same place.

Who it's not for. Anyone without Dropbox: the free Basic plan caps transfers at 2 GB, the lowest on this page.

The catch. Team plans are billed per user. On Standard and Advanced you can add a password to a transfer after sending it, which saves you when you forget.

How to move from SwissTransfer. For a recurring client, skip transfers: share a read-only folder you top up at each delivery. To automate the link email, our Dropbox with Make and Dropbox with n8n guides walk through the modules.

TransferNow: links that stay open up to a year

Long-lived links

Why switch to TransferNow. SwissTransfer caps links at 30 days and an expired link never comes back. TransferNow Premium keeps a transfer up to 365 days, with 250 GB per transfer and 1 TB of storage, for €6 a month on a two-year plan (€144 total). Prices are shown in euros, which suits European clients.

Who it's for. Freelancers and agencies whose clients download late, or come back for a file three months after delivery.

Who it's not for. Big free sends: the free plan stops at 5 GB per transfer and 7 days.

The catch. The listed prices assume a two-year commitment; monthly billing exists without a listed amount, so budget on the two-year figures. Starter costs €3 a month on two years for 10 GB per transfer, 30 days and 100 GB of storage.

How to move from SwissTransfer. Use Premium's 7-day trial: re-send your open deliveries with a long expiry, then check the download page your client will see. Tip: Premium adds download-limit control, handy for closing a link as soon as the client has the file.

SwissTransfer and 6 alternatives side by side

Our default: keep SwissTransfer for one-off sends under 50 GB, use Smash for anything bigger. The rest depends on what you send and to whom. Check three numbers on every row: size per transfer, link life and download count. Those are what break a delivery.

Switch cleanly

Leave SwissTransfer in eight steps

Switching senders looks like nothing. The real risk sits elsewhere: links still open at clients, files whose only copy sits in a transfer, and recipients who don't recognize the new sender. The order below covers all three.

02

Make sure you hold every original

Day 1

Many people treat a 30-day link as a backup. At expiry SwissTransfer deletes it for good. If the original is gone from your drive, pull it from your own link while it still works.

Heads-up: above 10 GB, the "Download all" button no longer builds a zip, so files come down one by one. Budget the time.

03

Name the real reason you're leaving

Day 1

One question picks the destination. Over 50 GB? Smash or MASV. Links that must last? TransferNow. Files for an EU client? GrosFichiers. Confidential? Proton Drive. Sending from a blocked country? Any tool on this page except SwissTransfer.

If your only issue is the 250-download cap or branding, you may not need to leave: SwissTransfer Pro, included in my kSuite+ (CHF 19 a year excluding VAT; Infomaniak bills in Swiss francs, your local amount depends on your country), unlocks unlimited downloads and a branded page.

no useless subscription
04

Send yourself a trial transfer

Day 2

Before the first client delivery, send yourself a real file from the new tool, to a personal address, and open it on your phone. You see the email, the download page and the real speed.

On Smash free with a big file, time the queue too: it varies with the hour.

05

Rebuild your default settings

Day 2

On SwissTransfer you picked expiry, download count and password on every send. Find the same settings in the new tool and set defaults that fit your clients: long expiry for committee approvals, password for anything sensitive.

If you pay, add your logo now: clients trust a link with your name on it.

Time

06

Tell your regular recipients

Week 1

Email from a new service sometimes lands in spam. A short note to regular clients does it: "my next files will come from this service, check spam the first time."

Contacts in a country where SwissTransfer blocks sending see no change on receipt, and now they can send files back to you.

Time
ten minutes
Risk if rushed
deliveries in spam
07

Automate recurring deliveries

Week 1

If you deliver to the same client every week, a transfer tool is the wrong tool. A shared folder plus an automation does better: when a file lands in the folder, the scenario creates the link and emails it. Our Google Drive with Make and Dropbox with Make guides show the modules.

That scenario fits in three modules: a trigger, a link creation, an email.

Keep SwissTransfer as a backup

After

There's nothing to cancel if you used the free plan. For a one-off send under 50 GB, SwissTransfer is still one of the best free options around: keep it in reserve.

If you took a kSuite plan only for SwissTransfer Pro, check the renewal date before cancelling, and export your send history if you use it as proof of delivery.

Pitfalls

What makes a sender switch go wrong

These mistakes show up again and again with photographers, editors and agencies changing tools. None is technical: they're oversights, and you pay for them in front of a client.

Thinking paid lifts the 50 GB cap

SwissTransfer Pro unlocks unlimited downloads and branding, not size. If your problem is an 80 GB file, paying for kSuite won't fix it: you need Smash, MASV or Dropbox Standard.

Moving to a smaller free tier without noticing

TransferNow sends 5 GB for free, Dropbox Basic 2 GB, GrosFichiers 10 GB. You leave SwissTransfer over one flaw and lose 45 GB per transfer on the way. Always compare the free line before signing up.

Forgetting link life

You trade SwissTransfer's 30 days for Smash free (7 days) or MASV (5 days by default). A client who approves by committee misses the link and asks for a re-send. Set the longest useful expiry at send time, or use a shared folder.

Treating a transfer as an archive

SwissTransfer deletes at expiry, Smash free stores nothing, MASV keeps files 5 days. If your only copy of a deliverable sits in a link, it's gone on the expiry date. Keep the original elsewhere.

Switching right before a trip

If you're heading to one of the 60 countries where SwissTransfer blocks sending, install and try the replacement before you leave, not from a hotel with slow Wi-Fi and a waiting client.

Per-GB billing with no ceiling

Pay-as-you-go is fair until a client asks for the full rushes again. Set a spending alert on MASV, and compare a fixed plan once your monthly volume is steady.

FAQ · 8 questions

SwissTransfer alternatives: common questions

  • What is the best free alternative to SwissTransfer?

Smash, if size is your problem: no limit even on the free plan, though transfers above 2 GB wait behind paying users. If privacy is your problem, Proton Drive's free plan encrypts end to end up to 5 GB. For a plain send under 50 GB, no free tool really beats SwissTransfer. Coming from WeTransfer instead? Our WeTransfer switch guide covers the same tools from the other side.

  • Why is SwissTransfer not available in my country?

Infomaniak blocks creating transfers from 60 countries, including India, China, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, the UAE, Israel, Malaysia and the Philippines. Receiving works everywhere. If you travel to these countries for work, set up a backup tool like Smash before you fly.

  • How do I send more than 50 GB for free?

Use Smash's free plan, which has no size cap: start in the evening so the queue clears overnight. Or split your folder into archives under 50 GB and make several SwissTransfer sends. For heavy video every month, MASV's 15 free GB plus $0.25 per GB is often simpler.

  • Is SwissTransfer secure?

Yes for everyday use: encryption in transit and at rest (AES 256-bit), storage in Switzerland, optional password, and Infomaniak states it doesn't scan files or use them to train AI. It isn't end-to-end encryption, though. For very sensitive files, encrypt the archive before sending or use Proton Drive.

  • Why can't I download everything at once on SwissTransfer?

The "Download all" button builds a zip, and above 10 GB the recipient has to grab files one by one. Sender-side fix: bundle your files into one or two archives before sending, so your client only clicks twice.

  • Can I extend an expired SwissTransfer link?

No. Once expired, a link can't be reactivated or extended, even by support, and the files are deleted for good. If your client tends to be late, pick 30 days at send time. For links that last months, TransferNow Premium goes up to 365 days.

  • Is there a paid version of SwissTransfer?

Yes: SwissTransfer Pro, included in paid kSuite plans and in my kSuite+ (CHF 19 a year excluding VAT; Infomaniak bills in Swiss francs, your local amount depends on your country). It unlocks unlimited downloads, history and a branded page. The per-transfer size stays at 50 GB, so if that's your wall, paying won't move it.

  • Which SwissTransfer alternative works best for video teams?

Smash for occasional huge files, MASV for regular masters billed per gigabyte, Dropbox Standard if your team already stores there. To compare full cloud drives too, see our cloud file sharing ranking.
