Vimeo alternatives: where to go when Vimeo bumps you to Studio

Seven destinations, one per use case, and a seven-step exit plan.

Short answer: Wistia if you're a business using video for marketing, SproutVideo for private videos and courses on a flat bill, Bunny Stream if you'd rather pay per gigabyte, Cloudflare Stream if you're building an app, Restream or Livestorm for live and webinars, YouTube if you want free reach. One thing to know before you pick: Vimeo has no bulk download, and your original files can be deleted if your account drops to Free. We compared all seven tools and checked their official pricing pages in 2026.

The real reasons

Why Vimeo customers are heading for the exit

Vimeo's player is still clean and reliable, and plenty of customers are happy with it. People leave over billing, not playback. Six reasons, each checked against Vimeo's own pages.

The Studio reclassification

Vimeo can decide your account belongs to a business and move it to Studio: $400 a month billed annually, with 10 seats and 10 TB of storage. Vimeo says under 10% of paying customers are affected. For those who are, the bill can multiply several times over. One reviewer described a renewal going from $780 to $4,800 a year, announced by a single email.

A 2 TB monthly bandwidth line

Every self-serve plan includes 2 TB of player bandwidth a month. Go over twice in 12 months, or past 10 TB once, and Vimeo contacts you with seven days to reach a resolution. A growing course business hits that line sooner than expected.

Upload caps counted per year

Starter, at $12 per seat per month billed annually, allows 60 videos per seat per year with 2 TB of storage. Standard allows 120 videos (4 TB) and Advanced 240 (7 TB). A team publishing three videos a week burns through Starter in about five months.

Useful features sit on pricey tiers

Embedding needs Starter. Branding, CTAs and lead forms need Standard, at $25 per seat. Live and webinars need Advanced at $75 per seat billed annually, or $125 month to month, with 100 registrants per event.

No bulk export

There's no way to download your whole library at once, and downloads are paid-plan only. Original files are kept only if the setting is on, and may be deleted if you fall back to Free. Every month you wait makes leaving riskier.

New owner, new priorities

Bending Spoons bought Vimeo for $1.38 billion in cash, closing in late 2025, and cut staff in early 2026. Vimeo sits at 2.8 out of 5 on Trustpilot, with two thirds of reviews at one star, mostly about billing and cancelling. To be fair, some longtime users say the product improved quickly under the new owner.

The 7 alternatives

Vimeo alternatives, one by one

For each tool: why switch to it, who it fits, its catch, how to migrate from Vimeo, and what it costs. Prices come from official pricing pages in 2026. Scores come from our full reviews where we have one. Gumlet isn't ranked: its pricing page shows two different plan grids, and we couldn't confirm which one applies. Vidyard, Dacast and Brightcove show up in most other lists; we kept them out for the same reason, since this page only ranks tools whose prices we could confirm on an official page.

01

Wistia: the closest swap for a marketing team

Best for B2B marketing

Why move to Wistia. Most of the accounts Vimeo pushes toward Studio are businesses using video on their own website: product demos, customer stories, landing page videos. Wistia was built for exactly that. You get lead capture forms inside the player, calls to action, per-viewer analytics and CRM connections. If the Studio email landed in your inbox, Wistia is the first quote to get before you sign anything.

Who it's for. B2B marketing teams and SMBs that host video on their own site and want to know who watched what.

Who should skip it. A filmmaker showing a portfolio, or a course creator protecting paid lessons. You'd pay for sales features you never use.

The catch. Pricing climbs fast once you want the advanced features, and the free plan keeps Wistia branding on the player with no CTAs or forms. That's the main reason our full Wistia review lands at 3.8 out of 5.

How to migrate. Pull your source files out of Vimeo first (step 2 below), then upload them to Wistia by drag and drop or through its API. Rebuild your CTAs in the Wistia player. Nothing carries over from one player to the other.

SproutVideo: flat pricing for private video

Best flat-rate host

Why move to SproutVideo. A lot of Vimeo customers only need three things: host private videos, embed them on a site or member area, and stop people from sharing them. SproutVideo does that with flat monthly plans you can actually read. No social network, no public showcase. Just hosting.

Who it's for. Course creators, internal training teams, agencies hosting client work, and anyone who wants the same bill every month.

Who should skip it. Anyone looking for an audience. Nobody outside your site will ever discover your videos.

The catch. The entry Seed plan holds 150 GB of storage. A course shot in HD fills that faster than you think, and then you're on the next tier.

How to migrate. Download your videos from Vimeo, then upload them to SproutVideo. Use the 30-day trial (no credit card) to load everything and check your embeds before your Vimeo renewal date.

Seed $15/mo, $12 billed annually

Bunny Stream: pay per gigabyte, with a real Vimeo migration tool

Cheapest at scale

Why move to Bunny Stream. Vimeo sells seats and plans, then calls you when bandwidth goes over 2 TB a month. Bunny flips that model. Storage costs $0.01 per GB per month in its Frankfurt region, and delivery costs $0.010 per GB in North America and Europe. Standard encoding is included. At 3 TB delivered in a month in the US or EU, delivery runs about $30.

Who it's for. High-traffic sites, course platforms with a developer on hand, and teams that want EU data handling (Bunny is based in Slovenia and offers EU-only routing).

Who should skip it. A marketing team with zero technical help. The dashboard is a CDN dashboard, not a marketing tool.

The catch. Your bill moves with your audience. Delivery costs $0.030 per GB in Asia and $0.045 in South America. DRM costs $99 a month per library.

How to migrate. This is the best-equipped exit from Vimeo. Its Vimeo2Bunny utility runs from the command line with a Vimeo API token. It moves videos with titles, descriptions and tags, turns folders into collections, offers a dry run and resumes where it stopped. You still swap the embeds on your site by hand.

Cloudflare Stream: video as an API

Best for developers

Why move to Cloudflare Stream. If Vimeo was mostly a pipe feeding video into your app, Stream does the job with no feature tiers. You pay $5 per month for each 1,000 minutes stored, prepaid, and $1 per 1,000 minutes delivered. Encoding and ingest are free, and there are no bandwidth fees, so the 2 TB question simply goes away.

Who it's for. Product teams, SaaS apps and platforms already on Cloudflare.

Who should skip it. A course creator or marketer who wants a library, folders and ready-to-read analytics.

The catch. Everything goes through the API or a bare dashboard. No showcase page, no forms, no CTAs in the player.

How to migrate. Stream can import a video from a URL. With a Vimeo API token, your developer pulls each video's file link and sends it to Stream in a loop.

Restream: live streaming without Vimeo Advanced

Best for live

Why move to Restream. On Vimeo, live streaming starts at Advanced, $75 per seat per month billed annually. If you kept that plan only to go live, Restream replaces it for a fraction of the price. It streams to YouTube, LinkedIn and Facebook at once, from a browser studio.

Who it's for. Creators, marketing teams and nonprofits that go live on several channels.

Who should skip it. Anyone looking for an on-demand library. Restream is not a host for courses or private video.

The catch. You'll need a second tool for your back catalog. Our Restream review scores it 4.2 out of 5.

How to migrate. Nothing to move for live. Connect your channels, paste your stream key into your broadcast software, and run a test stream.

Livestorm: webinars past Vimeo's 100-registrant cap

Best for webinars

Why move to Livestorm. Vimeo webinars cap at 100 registrants per event on Advanced. Livestorm is a full webinar tool: registration pages, email reminders, polls, Q&A and replays.

Who it's for. Teams running product demos, live training or customer events with sign-ups.

Who should skip it. On-demand hosting, or free webinars for very large audiences.

The catch. The Pro plan runs on attendee credits at €2.50 each, bought yearly. At scale, the bill climbs. That's why our Livestorm review gives it 3.3 out of 5.

How to migrate. Rebuild your registration page and reminders, then export old replays from Vimeo and republish them on your new host.

YouTube: free, if you want reach

Free

Why move to YouTube. If your Vimeo videos were public and meant to get you found, YouTube hosts them for free with no bandwidth ceiling. It's the only option here that brings you viewers you don't already have.

Who it's for. Creators, brands and educators whose videos should be discovered.

Who should skip it. Paid courses and internal video. An unlisted video plays for anyone with the link, and you don't control the ads or the suggested videos at the end.

The catch. Viewers drift to other people's videos. On a sales page, that's a buyer walking away.

How to migrate. Upload your source files, recreate titles and descriptions, then swap the embeds on your site.

Our default picks: Wistia for marketing teams, SproutVideo for courses, Bunny Stream once bandwidth becomes the problem. For scale: 3 TB delivered in the US or EU in one month runs about $30 in delivery on Bunny, while crossing 2 TB twice a year on Vimeo starts a sales conversation. Exit plan

Leave Vimeo in seven steps

Order matters. The first three steps protect what you can't rebuild: your renewal window, your original files and the list of places your videos play.

01

If you got the Studio email, dispute it in writing and start the clock

Day 1

Vimeo says accounts can be classified as businesses based on account-level factors, and that you can contest the classification through support. Do it in writing, with a short description of how you actually use the account. Then note your renewal date. Everything below has to be done before it, whatever support answers.

Do
contest via support, in writing
Note
your renewal date
02

Lock down your source files before touching your plan

Before anything

Vimeo only keeps your original uploads if the keep-source-files setting is on. If the account drops back to Free or Basic, those originals may be deleted. Check the setting now. Do not downgrade until every file is out.

The classic mistake: downgrade to save money, then find you can only pull re-compressed copies, or nothing at all.

Risk
losing original files
Rule
no downgrade mid-export
03

Map every place your videos play

Day 1 to 2

List every page, member area, course platform, email template and sales deck that embeds a Vimeo video. Note captions, chapters, passwords, domain restrictions and folders. One spreadsheet row per video is enough.

A Vimeo video often lives in three places at once. Miss one and you get a blank player the day you close the account.

Time
one to two hours
Output
one row per video
04

Export in bulk through the API, not the UI

Day 2 to 5

Vimeo has no bulk download, and library downloads are paid-plan only. Past a few dozen videos, use the API: create a token with the Public, Private and Video Files scopes, and let a script or your destination's importer do the work.

Vimeo2Bunny is the most complete of these tools. Run its dry run first: you get the exact list of what will move before anything moves.

Tip

05

Bring the metadata, accept that view history stays behind

During export

Grab titles, descriptions, tags, captions and thumbnails, and recreate your folder structure. None of the destinations on this page advertise importing Vimeo view history, so export the numbers you care about to a spreadsheet before you leave.

Keep

Lost
view history
06

Swap every embed, page by page

The long one

Each embedded video is a snippet pointing to player.vimeo.com. No tool replaces those for you. Search your CMS, LMS and email templates for that string, and replace each snippet with your new host's embed.

Keep Vimeo live while you do it. Your pages keep working and you switch one page at a time with zero downtime.

Search for
player.vimeo.com
Rule
Vimeo stays live until done
07

QA, then cancel before renewal

The end

Open every page from your inventory on desktop and mobile. Check playback, captions, password or domain protection, and start time. Then cancel before the renewal date. Users report that cancelling can take more than one try, so don't leave it to the last day. Keep a local copy of every source file.

Migration pitfalls

What makes a Vimeo exit go wrong

These mistakes keep coming up in user reports and in vendors' import guides. Each one is easy to dodge once you know it's there.

Downgrading to Free to save a month

The most expensive reflex. A Free account may lose its source files, and library downloads are paid-plan only. Keep your plan until the export is done, even if it costs one more month.

Waiting on support before exporting

Contesting the Studio classification is worth doing. Waiting for the answer before you start is not. If it arrives after renewal, you've lost your leverage.

Missing hidden embeds

Videos inside a course platform, an email sequence or an old sales page are the ones people forget. Searching for "player.vimeo.com" across your site and tools finds them in minutes.

Sizing the new plan on guesswork

Check your real numbers first: videos per year, storage in GB, bandwidth per month. SproutVideo's Seed plan holds 150 GB, and an HD course library can already be past that.

No spending alert on usage billing

Bunny Stream and Cloudflare Stream are cheap on average, but a video that takes off moves the bill. Set a spend alert on day one.

Forgetting cookie consent

Some players set cookies and wait for consent before loading. The result is a video that won't play for part of your audience. Check this with your consent tool before switching.

FAQ · 8 questions

Vimeo alternatives: frequently asked questions

  • Why is Vimeo forcing me onto the Studio plan?

Vimeo can classify an account as a business based on account-level factors and move it to Studio, which costs $400 a month billed annually. Vimeo says this affects less than 10% of paying customers. You can contest it through support, but start your migration plan at the same time in case the answer comes after your renewal.

  • What does the Vimeo Studio plan include?

Studio includes 10 seats (expandable up to 200), 10 TB of storage and 36 TB of bandwidth per year with no monthly cap. For a heavy streamer, that yearly pool is the one real upside over the 2 TB monthly threshold on self-serve plans.

  • What happens if I go over 2 TB of bandwidth on Vimeo?

Vimeo reaches out if you exceed 2 TB twice in 12 months, or 10 TB once. You then have seven days to respond and agree on a fix: cut usage, move to a Custom or Enterprise plan, or leave. That seven-day window is short, which is why exporting early matters.

  • Can I download all my Vimeo videos at once?

Not from the interface. Vimeo has no bulk download. You need the API with a token that has the Video Files scope, or your new host's importer. Vimeo2Bunny runs in one command and resumes if it stops halfway.

  • What's the best free Vimeo alternative?

YouTube, if your videos are public and meant to be found. For private videos on your own site, there's no lasting free option. The closest is Bunny Stream, billed by usage with a $1 monthly minimum, so a small, lightly watched library costs a few dollars.

  • Is Vimeo still free?

Yes, with tight limits: 2 uploads a month and 25 videos in total. Embeddable or private videos on Free are capped at 1 TB of bandwidth per month. Embedding on your site and password protection need at least Starter, at $12 per seat per month billed annually.

  • What's the best Vimeo alternative for online courses?

SproutVideo if you want flat pricing and simple protection, Bunny Stream if you have a developer and a large student base. For real DRM, Bunny charges $99 a month per library. Skip YouTube for paid content: unlisted videos travel with a single link.

  • Who owns Vimeo now?

Bending Spoons, an Italian software company. It closed the $1.38 billion all-cash acquisition in late 2025, and layoffs followed in early 2026. The price changes and the Studio reclassification came in that period, though some users say the product has improved quickly since.
