Overview

What changes for strategy, venture and business development teams

CB Insights tracks private companies: funding, investors, deals, markets and its own predictive scores. With the connector, you ask Claude about a company or a sector in plain words, and it pulls the relevant records itself, then turns them into a comparison, a shortlist or a memo draft in the conversation.

A company file in one pass. get_company_profile gives the overview, get_company_funding and get_company_investors add who put money in and when, and get_company_news brings the latest coverage.

A competitive landscape. get_company_competitors and get_company_markets place a company among its peers and in CB Insights' market maps, which is how a first market map for a memo takes shape.

A view on what comes next. get_company_outlook returns the Mosaic score and exit probabilities, while get_company_acquisitions and get_company_exits show the deals already done.

What Claude will not do here. The twelve documented tools only read; no source describes the other three, and nothing on the sheet writes by default. Everything depends on an active CB Insights subscription, and your IT team may have to approve the connection. Nothing runs on its own either: no tool fires when a company raises. Monitoring of that kind belongs to an automation tool, a different job, gathered on the Integrations hub. For another data connector, see the Claude airtable connector.

Vocabulary

Five words before you plug it in

The vocabulary you will meet while connecting CB Insights.

Connector
The link you set up once between Claude and an account you already have, so Claude can work in that account while it answers you.
Tool
One named thing the connector lets Claude do. Claude picks the ones it needs by itself, and the directory sheet lists them by name.
Authorization
The service's own sign-in screen, where you hand Claude the access it will use later. Given once per person, and taken back the same way.
Approval
The confirmation Claude waits for before it goes through with a change to your account, shown in the chat at the moment it matters.
MCP
The shared standard connectors are built on: it is what lets an assistant such as Claude talk to an outside service like CB Insights.
Connect

Connecting CB Insights to Claude in three steps

  1. 01

    Find CB Insights in Claude

In Claude's settings, open Customize, then Connectors, and look for CB Insights in the list. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, an Owner or Primary Owner has to switch the connector on before each member can sign in.

  2. 02

    Start the connection

Click Connect on its row, then sign in to CB Insights in the window the service opens itself. If the link breaks later, Disconnect and connect again from the same row.

  3. 03

    Read the authorization screen

Read the CB Insights screen before you accept it. It belongs to the service, not to Claude, and it decides what the access covers. You can also withdraw that access later from your CB Insights account itself.

Tools

The 15 tools, sorted by what they do

CB Insights gives Claude 15 tools: 12 that read your account, 0 that change something in it, and 3 no official source describes.

Two groups: what Claude reads about companies, and three tools no official source describes. Tool names stay as Claude shows them.

What Claude reads (12)

12 tools

Twelve tools that look up company, investor and market data without changing anything.

get_company_acquisitions

For each company or investor you name, lists its acquisitions and other M&A deals, mergers, buyouts and takeovers, newest first. Claude can then tell the story of how a player grew by buying.

When it helps
a corporate development team wants to see what a rival has bought over the last few years.

Sourcemcp.cbinsights.com · September 30, 2026 ↗

get_company_competitors

Returns a company's competitors, similar companies, peers, challengers and incumbents. Claude can then lay out the field around the company you asked about.

When it helps
a strategist needs a first list of alternatives to a start-up that just approached the board.

Sourcemcp.cbinsights.com · September 30, 2026 ↗

get_company_exits

Lists the exits of a company or investor: IPOs, acquisitions, mergers, SPACs, buyouts, dissolutions and other liquidity events. It works for investors as well as companies, so a fund's track record shows up too.

When it helps
an investor wants to know how many portfolio companies of a fund actually reached an exit.

Sourcemcp.cbinsights.com · September 30, 2026 ↗

get_company_funding

Brings back a company's funding rounds, from pre-seed to late stage, with dates, amounts, lead and participating investors, and valuation ranges when CB Insights has them.

When it helps
before a partner meeting, you want the full raise history of a target in one table.

Sourcemcp.cbinsights.com · September 30, 2026 ↗

get_company_investments

Shows the rounds an investor has backed, led or joined, with the portfolio company, round type, date and amount. It covers the investor side of the market.

When it helps
a founder preparing a raise wants to know which seed deals a given fund led recently.

Sourcemcp.cbinsights.com · September 30, 2026 ↗

get_company_investors

Lists who funded a company: venture funds, angels, lead and participating investors, with round participation and lead status. It is the reverse view of the investments tool.

When it helps
you want to know whether two start-ups share a board-level investor before proposing a partnership.

Sourcemcp.cbinsights.com · September 30, 2026 ↗

get_company_markets

Returns the market maps that include a company, with each market's name, description and related industries, following CB Insights' own taxonomy. It shows where CB Insights places a company, not only what it says about itself.

When it helps
a product marketer wants to know which categories CB Insights places a competitor in.

Sourcemcp.cbinsights.com · September 30, 2026 ↗

get_company_news

Pulls recent news about a company or investor: press releases, announcements and coverage, with dates, titles, snippets, source links and other organisations mentioned alongside. Claude can summarise the thread instead of pasting links.

When it helps
an account executive wants the latest headlines on a prospect ten minutes before the call.

Sourcemcp.cbinsights.com · September 30, 2026 ↗

get_company_outlook

Returns forward-looking signals: Mosaic scores with insights and percentiles, IPO and M&A exit probabilities with their drivers, and commercial maturity or technology readiness levels.

When it helps
an investment committee wants a quick health reading on a private company before digging deeper.
Watch out
Mosaic runs from 0 to 1000, and CB Insights reads above 600 as a stronger outlook.

Sourcemcp.cbinsights.com · September 30, 2026 ↗

get_company_profile

Returns the profile of one or several companies or investors: description, website, headquarters, founding year, status, total funding, Mosaic score, headcount, sector, analyst rating and key people when available.

When it helps
you need a side-by-side table of five vendors for a buying decision.

Sourcemcp.cbinsights.com · September 30, 2026 ↗

get_company_relationships

Lists a company's business relationships, such as partners, suppliers, customers, vendors or licensees, most recent first. Claude can use it to trace who works with whom.

When it helps
a business development lead is hunting for a warm introduction into a target account.

Sourcemcp.cbinsights.com · September 30, 2026 ↗

get_company_revenue

Returns revenue data for a company: estimated and reported figures, ranges and history when CB Insights has them.

When it helps
a strategy team sizing an acquisition target wants any revenue signal before talking to bankers.
Watch out
figures can be estimates or ranges, so read them as signals, not audited numbers.

Not documented (3)

3 tools

The directory publishes these three names and nothing more. No official text says what they do, and this page will not guess from a name.

api_chatcbi

Listed on the directory sheet by name only. CB Insights' current tools reference does not document it, and no Claude page does either, so this page says nothing about what it does.

Watch out
whatever it does, the general approvals rule covers it.

api_rag

Another name with no description behind it: no official source explains this tool, and guessing from the name is exactly what this page refuses to do, however clear the name may look.

Watch out
the approvals rule applies to it like to the rest of the list.
Approvals

What Claude checks with you before acting

By default, Claude stops and asks for your go-ahead before each action it takes on an account on your behalf. The request shows up in the chat, right when it matters.

On Team and Enterprise, the owners decide whether a member may let some actions through without being asked every time. They can also limit what a connector may do for the whole organisation, keeping reading open and closing writing, for instance. That setting applies to everyone and nobody works around it from their own account. Claude also works through your own CB Insights login, so it reaches what your subscription covers and nothing more.

Plans

Which Claude plans include it

Out of the 819 sheets in the official directory, none shows availability by plan. The connector-by-connector answer is not published anywhere: it is a real gap in the catalogue.

The general rule is published: remote connectors are open to every user on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner or Primary Owner turns the connector on for the organisation before members can connect. For the current state of this one, check the connector's sheet in the official directory. CB Insights' own subscription is a separate requirement, set by CB Insights.

Limits

Where this connector stops

A connector is not an automation. Claude calls these tools while it answers you: nothing starts when a company raises, gets acquired or appears in the news.

Everything here comes from CB Insights' developer portal and its tools reference: neither Claude's help centre nor Anthropic's developer docs have a page on this connector. The tool list is an observed floor, not a promise, since an admin can open actions no public sheet shows. The directory's partner badge is not a security audit either, and Anthropic writes on every sheet that it does not choose the tools a publisher exposes nor guarantee how they behave. That reference lists 44 tools, many absent from the directory sheet, while three names on the sheet appear nowhere in it.

FAQ

Claude CB Insights connector: common questions

01What can Claude do with the CB Insights connector?
Claude can research private companies and investors from CB Insights data. Twelve documented tools return company profiles, funding rounds, investors, investments, acquisitions, exits, competitors, market maps, business relationships, news, revenue data and forward-looking scores such as Mosaic and exit probability. You ask in plain words, for example for five rivals of a start-up with their last round, and Claude gathers the records and writes the comparison in the conversation from those records.
02Can Claude change anything in CB Insights?
No write tool appears on the sheet: the twelve documented tools read, and the three others are not described by any source. Claude can look up companies, deals and news, but nothing documented edits a record or saves a list. That is a floor observed on the public sheet, not a guarantee, since three tools remain unexplained and an administrator could open actions no public page shows. Treat those three with the same caution as anything unknown.
03Does Claude ask before acting in CB Insights?
By default, Claude asks for confirmation before each action it takes on an account on your behalf. No source describes a confirmation specific to a CB Insights tool, including the three undocumented ones, so this default rule is what covers them. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, owners decide whether members may let some actions pass without being asked, and they can restrict what the connector may do for the whole organisation.
04Which plans is it available on?
No official source publishes plan availability connector by connector, and no directory sheet displays it. The general rule is that remote connectors are open to every user on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile, with an Owner switching them on first on Team and Enterprise. The directory sheet is the only place showing the current state. Separately, CB Insights requires an active CB Insights subscription on its side, whatever your Claude setup.
05Can Claude see everything in the CB Insights database?
Claude works through your own CB Insights login, so it reaches what your subscription and credentials open, not more. Within that, some data is uneven by nature: analyst ratings cover a curated subset of companies, as CB Insights notes, and revenue data mixes estimated and reported figures with ranges. On Claude's side, an owner of a Team or Enterprise workspace can also restrict what the connector may do for everyone in the organisation.
06Why is the Connect button greyed out for CB Insights?
CB Insights explains that a greyed-out Connect button means the connection needs approval from your IT or admin team. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, an Owner or Primary Owner also has to switch the connector on before members can sign in. Once both are done, you click Connect and log in with your CB Insights credentials. To check it worked, CB Insights suggests asking Claude which CB Insights tools it has.
07Claude or an automation tool for CB Insights?
They answer different needs, so it depends on the task. Claude works inside a conversation: you ask about a company or a market, it pulls the data and drafts the comparison, and nothing else happens once you stop typing. It does not react on its own when a company raises or makes the news. Alerts and scheduled watchlist reports that run in the background are what an automation tool is for; research on demand is where the connector helps.
