Overview

What changes when Claude can query ClickHouse Cloud

Answering a data question usually means finding the right service, the right database and the right table before writing any SQL. With this connector you ask in plain English, and Claude walks the structure of your ClickHouse Cloud account, writes the SELECT query, runs it against the service and explains the result, with no install on your side.

Answer a business question from raw tables. A product manager asks how many sign-ups came from each country last week; list_tables shows the columns available, and run_select_query runs the read-only query and returns the figures for Claude to comment on.

Check that backups are in shape. A data engineer wants reassurance before a migration; list_service_backups shows the latest backups and get_service_backup_configuration gives the schedule and retention settings.

Keep an eye on spend. A finance lead asks what the platform cost this month; get_organization_cost returns a grand total plus daily records per entity, which Claude turns into a short, readable summary.

What it will not do: no tool can insert or delete rows, alter a service or start a backup, and nothing runs by itself when a pipeline fails. Claude only queries while it answers you. The Integrations hub lists the platforms we document.

Vocabulary

Five words before you connect

The vocabulary Claude uses around this connector, in one minute.

Connector
The link you set up once between Claude and an account you already own, so Claude can work on it while it answers you.
Tool
One named thing a connector lets Claude do on that account. Claude picks the ones it needs; the directory sheet lists them by name.
Authorization
The ClickHouse Cloud sign-in page, where you grant Claude the access it uses afterwards. Given once per person, and revocable.
Approval
The confirmation Claude waits for before it changes something in an account, shown in the conversation when it matters.
MCP
The shared standard connectors are built on: it is what lets an assistant such as Claude talk to an outside service like ClickHouse.
Connect

Connect ClickHouse to Claude in three steps

  1. 01

    Find ClickHouse in your settings

Open Claude's settings, go to Customize, then Connectors, and look for ClickHouse. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, an Owner or Primary Owner has to enable it for the organization before members can sign in individually.

  2. 02

    Start the connection

Click Connect on its row, then sign in with your ClickHouse Cloud credentials in the browser window that opens. If the link breaks later, Disconnect and connect again to repair it.

  3. 03

    Read the authorization screen

Check what the ClickHouse authorization screen covers before you accept. It belongs to ClickHouse, not to Claude, and the access stays limited to the organizations and services your own account can reach.

Tools

The 13 tools, grouped by what they do

ClickHouse gives Claude 13 tools: 13 that read your account, 0 that change something in it.

One group only: ClickHouse documents all thirteen as read-only, each marked as such in its own metadata. Names stay exactly as Claude shows them.

get_organizations

Lists every ClickHouse Cloud organization the signed-in user can access. It answers the first question of any session: which organization holds the service you have in mind.

When it helps
a consultant working for several clients wants to see which organizations their login opens.

get_organization_details

Returns the details of a single organization once Claude knows its identifier, so it can confirm it is looking at the right one before going further.

When it helps
two organizations have similar names and you need to tell production from staging, before any query runs.

get_services_list

Lists all the services in one ClickHouse Cloud organization, which tells Claude where your databases actually live before it looks any deeper.

When it helps
a new analyst joins and asks which services the team runs before touching any data.

get_service_details

Zooms in on one specific service inside an organization, giving Claude the context it needs before it inspects databases, backups or ClickPipes on that service.

When it helps
an engineer checks the state of the analytics service before a heavy reporting day.

get_organization_cost

Retrieves billing and usage cost data for an organization: a grand total plus daily cost records for each entity, over an optional date range.

When it helps
finance wants to know which service drove last month's bill.
Watch out
a single request covers at most a 31-day window.

run_select_query

Executes a read-only SELECT query against a ClickHouse service and returns the rows. This is where Claude turns your plain-English question into an actual answer from your data.

When it helps
a growth lead asks for weekly active users by plan over the last quarter.
Watch out
only SELECT statements are accepted, by design.

list_databases

Shows all databases available in a given ClickHouse service, so Claude knows where to look for the tables your question needs.

When it helps
you are not sure whether event data sits in the raw database or the curated one.

Sourceclickhouse.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

list_tables

Lists the tables of a database together with their column definitions, which shows what a query can actually use.

When it helps
you ask about orders and Claude must find which table holds them, and under which column names, before a single line of SQL is drafted.

Sourceclickhouse.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

list_service_backups

Lists the backups of a service, most recent first, so Claude can tell you when the last one ran and how far back they go.

When it helps
before a risky schema migration, a lead wants proof a fresh backup exists.

Sourceclickhouse.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

get_service_backup_details

Opens a single backup picked from the backup list, for a closer look at that one snapshot rather than the whole history.

When it helps
an incident review needs the precise record of the backup taken just before the outage, to compare it with the timeline of the incident.

Sourceclickhouse.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

get_service_backup_configuration

Gives the backup configuration of a service, meaning its schedule and retention settings, so you can check the policy itself rather than individual snapshots one by one.

When it helps
a security questionnaire asks how long backups are kept on the production service.

Sourceclickhouse.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

list_clickpipes

Lists all ClickPipes configured for a service, giving Claude an inventory of what is plugged into it before anyone digs into a single pipe.

When it helps
a data team inherits a service and wants to know which ClickPipes exist before auditing them one at a time.

Sourceclickhouse.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

get_clickpipe

Focuses on one specific ClickPipe on a service, for when a single pipe needs a closer inspection than the list provides.

When it helps
numbers look stale in a dashboard and someone suspects the ClickPipe feeding that table, and wants its details without opening the console.

Approvals

What Claude asks before acting

By default, Claude stops and asks for your go-ahead before each action it takes on an account for you. ClickHouse documents all thirteen tools here as read-only, so there is nothing for Claude to modify.

On Team and Enterprise workspaces, owners decide whether members may let some actions through without being asked each time. They can also limit what a connector may do for the whole organization, for example keeping reading and closing writing, and nobody overrides that from their own account. Claude works with the rights of the person who signed in: ClickHouse scopes the access to the organizations and services that user can reach.

Plans

Which plans include it

None of the 819 sheets in the official directory shows availability by plan. Connector by connector, that answer is published nowhere: it is a real gap in the catalogue.

What is published is the general rule: remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner or Primary Owner turns the connector on for the organization before each member connects. For the current state of this one, check its sheet in the official directory, the only place showing it.

Limits

Where this connector stops

A connector is not an automation. Claude calls these tools while it answers you; nothing fires when a ClickPipe fails or a cost spikes.

The tool list is an observed floor, not a promise: an administrator can open actions that no public sheet shows. The verification badge is not a security audit, and Anthropic states on every sheet that it does not control which tools a publisher exposes. Only ClickHouse documents this connector; no Claude help article covers it. To compare with a connector that does write, see the Claude adobe-workfront connector.

FAQ

Questions about the Claude ClickHouse connector

01What can Claude do with the ClickHouse connector?
Claude can explore your ClickHouse Cloud account and answer questions from your data. Its thirteen tools list organizations and services, show databases and table schemas, run read-only SELECT queries, report on backups and backup settings, inventory ClickPipes, and return billing and usage costs. ClickHouse documents every tool on its own site, so nothing in this list is guessed from a tool name. It all happens in conversation, without installing anything.
02Can Claude insert, update or delete data in ClickHouse?
No. ClickHouse states that all the tools exposed by its remote server are read-only, that each one carries a read-only flag in its metadata, and that none can modify data, alter a service configuration or run a destructive operation. The query tool only accepts SELECT statements. That is what the official sheet and the publisher describe today; an administrator could still open actions that no public page shows. Treat it as a query tool.
03Does Claude ask before it runs a query on my data?
Claude's default rule is to ask for confirmation before any action it takes on an account on your behalf. No source describes a specific confirmation for the ClickHouse tools, so this general rule is what applies, and all thirteen tools only read. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, owners also decide whether members may let some actions run without a new prompt each time, and they can restrict the connector for everyone.
04Which Claude plans include the ClickHouse connector?
No official source publishes plan availability connector by connector, and none of the 819 directory sheets shows it. The general rule is that remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile, with an Owner or Primary Owner enabling them first on Team and Enterprise. The ClickHouse documentation names no Claude plan. Only the connector's sheet in the official directory shows its current state for your account.
05Does Claude see every service in our ClickHouse organization?
No. Access is scoped to the organizations and services the signed-in user is allowed to reach, and each service must also have the remote server enabled in the Cloud console. A service where it is switched off, or one your login cannot open, stays out of Claude's view. Enabling or disabling the server requires a dedicated permission, which gives your ClickHouse administrators a clean way to decide what Claude can query.
06Why does Claude not see my self-hosted ClickHouse cluster?
Because this connector targets ClickHouse Cloud. According to ClickHouse, the remote server works with Cloud services only, and self-hosted instances are covered by a separate open-source server that runs locally on your machine. If your data lives on your own cluster, the Cloud connector will not reach it, whatever permissions you hold. On ClickHouse Cloud, by contrast, access follows the organizations and services your login can reach. Check which kind of deployment holds the data before you start.
07Claude or an automation tool for ClickHouse reporting?
They answer different needs, so the choice depends on the task rather than on a ranking. Claude suits exploratory questions asked on the spot, such as a quick breakdown by country or a check on last night's backups, and it only acts while you are talking to it. An automation tool suits repeated jobs that run without you, such as a daily metrics export to a spreadsheet. Data teams often use both side by side.
