Overview

Why pick this ClickUp extension for Claude

The directory lists two ClickUp entries, and they are not the same product. This one is a desktop extension written by an independent developer and installed on Claude Desktop with a personal ClickUp API key. Its publisher pitches its minimal read mode at coding assistants and context gathering, where rich task detail matters more than breadth.

A task with its whole story. getTaskById returns a task together with its comments, threaded replies, images and metadata in one call, which is what a developer wants before fixing the bug described in it.

Time logged without leaving the chat. createTimeEntry books hours on a task, and getTimeEntries shows where the week went, handy for freelancers who bill by the hour.

Docs you can read and extend. Claude can read a ClickUp Doc page by page, add a new page or edit an existing one.

What it cannot do, per its publisher: search only covers recent tasks with fuzzy matching, not ClickUp's full search database, and there is no Chat and no search across connected apps. It installs locally, runs only on Claude Desktop and relies on community support. The publisher points to ClickUp's official remote connector for sign-in security, Chat and official support. Nothing fires on its own either; for workflows that react to ClickUp events, see the Integrations hub.

Vocabulary

Five words before you install

The terms that matter for this extension, explained once.

Connector
A link you set up once between Claude and an account you already have, so Claude can work in it while it answers you.
Desktop extension
A connector that installs and runs on your own computer inside Claude Desktop, instead of being hosted by the service online.
Tool
One named action the connector gives Claude. Claude decides which ones to call, and the directory lists all of them by name.
Approval
The confirmation Claude waits for before doing something that changes your account, shown in the conversation when it matters.
MCP
The open standard connectors are built on: it is what lets an assistant like Claude talk to an outside service such as ClickUp.
Connect

Install the ClickUp extension in three steps

  1. 01

    Find it in Claude Desktop

In Claude Desktop, open Customize then Connectors and look for the ClickUp entry published by an independent developer, not by ClickUp. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, an Owner or Primary Owner has to allow it first.

  2. 02

    Start the installation

Launch it from its row. There is no ClickUp sign-in window here: the publisher says a configuration screen asks for your ClickUp API key and team ID instead. To cut the link later, Disconnect it or remove the key.

  3. 03

    Mind what the key opens

No ClickUp authorization screen appears: the API key you paste is what decides the reach, since the publisher offers no other sign-in. Treat that key like a password.

Tools

The 13 tools, split by what they do

ClickUp gives Claude 13 tools: 6 that read your account, 7 that change something in it.

The publisher documents each tool in a table, so everything falls into two groups. Names stay exactly as Claude shows them.

  • 6 read
  • 7 write

What Claude reads (6)

6 tools

Tasks, spaces, lists, time and documents, consulted and left as they are.

getTaskById

Returns everything about one task in a single call: description, comments with their threaded replies, images and metadata. The publisher describes it as complete task details.

When it helps
a developer pastes a task ID and asks Claude to find the relevant code.
Watch out
by default only 4 images and 1 MB per task come back, per the publisher.

searchTasks

Finds tasks from their content, keywords, assignees or project context, with fuzzy matching.

When it helps
"which task mentioned the CSV import?" when nobody remembers the title.
Watch out
the publisher says it only covers recent tasks, not ClickUp's full search database.

Sourcegithub.com · September 30, 2026 ↗

searchSpaces

Walks through the structure of your workspace, how projects are organised and which documents sit where. Claude uses it to find its way before opening anything.

When it helps
asking what documents live in the product strategy space before you start a new brief.

Sourcegithub.com · September 30, 2026 ↗

getListInfo

Reads a list's description and its available statuses. Claude needs it to know which statuses exist before placing or reporting on tasks in that list.

When it helps
checking the project guidelines written in a list's description before drafting tasks for it.

Sourcegithub.com · September 30, 2026 ↗

getTimeEntries

Shows the time logged across projects, so Claude can total hours and spot where the week actually went, project by project, which the publisher calls analysing time spent.

When it helps
totalling this week's development hours before a timesheet goes to a client.

readDocument

Opens a ClickUp Doc with its details, page structure and content, and lets Claude go from page to page as it reads.

When it helps
reading the API documentation kept in the development space before answering a question about an endpoint.

What Claude changes (7)

7 tools

Comments, tasks, list descriptions, time entries and doc pages. No source spells out a confirmation, so the general rule below applies.

addComment

Approval: see the rule

Posts a comment on a task, or a reply inside an existing comment thread. Replies are attached to the thread through the parent comment, per the publisher.

What Claude asks for
no source documents a confirmation for this tool; the general approval rule below applies.
When it helps
answering a reviewer's question inside the thread once the bug is solved.

Sourcegithub.com · September 30, 2026 ↗

updateTask

Approval: see the rule

Changes a task's status, priority, assignees and other fields, and its description too, which the publisher says can be appended to or replaced entirely.

What Claude asks for
nothing tool-specific is documented, so rely on the general rule.
When it helps
moving the API docs task to in review.
Watch out
the publisher's README contradicts itself on overwriting; see the limits.

Sourcegithub.com · September 30, 2026 ↗

createTask

Approval: see the rule

Creates a new task with a markdown description, in the list you name, with full markdown support, per the publisher.

What Claude asks for
no source describes a confirmation step; the approvals section covers it.

Sourcegithub.com · September 30, 2026 ↗

updateListInfo

Approval: see the rule

Adds text to a list's description without erasing what is already there; the publisher labels it append-only and safe.

What Claude asks for
nothing specific is documented; see the general rule below.
When it helps
adding a new convention to the guidelines at the top of a project list after a retrospective.

Sourcegithub.com · September 30, 2026 ↗

createTimeEntry

Approval: see the rule

Records a time entry on a task, so the hours land in ClickUp without opening it.

What Claude asks for
no source spells out a confirmation for it; the general approval rule applies.
When it helps
"book 2 hours for the client meeting on the XYZ project" at the end of the day.

Sourcegithub.com · September 30, 2026 ↗

updateDocumentPage

Approval: see the rule

Updates the content or the name of an existing page in a ClickUp Doc, in replace or append mode according to the publisher.

What Claude asks for
nothing tool-specific is documented; rely on the general rule.
When it helps
adding today's decisions to the meeting notes page.
Watch out
replace mode rewrites the page, so say which mode you want.

Sourcegithub.com · September 30, 2026 ↗

createDocumentOrPage

Approval: see the rule

Starts a fresh Doc with its first page, or adds pages and sub-pages to a Doc that already exists.

What Claude asks for
no source documents a confirmation step; the approvals section covers it.
When it helps
opening a requirements document for the mobile app project straight from the conversation where you scoped it.

Approvals

What Claude checks with you first

By default, Claude pauses and asks before each action it takes on an account for someone, inside the conversation.

On Team and Enterprise workspaces, owners decide whether members may let some actions through without a prompt, and they can narrow a connector for the whole organization, for example reading allowed and writing blocked. Nobody lifts that from a personal account. Claude works with the rights of the person who connected; here that means whatever the ClickUp API key can reach. The publisher adds a lever of its own: three modes, from a minimal read-only set to full writing, with writing on by default.

Plans

Which Claude plans include it

None of the 819 sheets in the official directory states plan availability. That answer is published nowhere, connector by connector.

The published rule is general: remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile, while desktop extensions like this one install on Claude Desktop. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner or Primary Owner opens a connector for the organization before members use it. Neither the publisher nor Anthropic says more about this extension. For the live state, open its sheet in the official directory.

Limits

Where the Claude ClickUp community connector stops

A connector is not an automation. Claude calls these tools while it replies, so nothing happens when a task is created or completed.

Everything here comes from the directory sheet and the publisher's README on GitHub; neither ClickUp nor Anthropic documents this extension. The partner badge is not a security audit, and Anthropic says on every sheet that it does not control a publisher's tools or vouch for them. The README also describes two tools, editComment and searchDocuments, that the sheet does not list: this page does not count on them. For a case where two official sources disagree, see the Claude gmail connector page.

Can updateTask overwrite a task's existing description?

What this page followsThe same README says both. We follow the tool table, the more detailed and tool-specific of the two, and assume an update can replace a description. Ask Claude to append when the existing text matters.

FAQ

Questions about the Claude ClickUp community connector

01What can Claude do with this ClickUp extension?
Claude can read and work on tasks, lists, time and documents in your ClickUp workspace from Claude Desktop. Six tools read: full task context with comments and images, task search, space browsing, list details, time entries and documents. Seven tools change things: comments, task updates, new tasks, list descriptions, time entries, doc page edits and new docs or pages. The publisher documents every one of the thirteen tools in its README.
02Can Claude change or delete things in ClickUp with this extension?
It can change and create, and no tool on the sheet deletes anything. The seven writing tools add comments, update or create tasks, append to list descriptions, log time and create or edit Doc pages. Two of them can rewrite content: a task update may replace a description, and a page edit in replace mode rewrites the page. The publisher also offers read-only modes that hide the writing tools entirely.
03Does Claude ask before it changes my ClickUp?
By default, Claude asks for confirmation before each action it takes on an account for someone. No source describes a specific confirmation for any of this extension's tools, so that general rule is what applies. On Team and Enterprise workspaces, owners decide whether members may let some actions pass without a prompt, and they can block writing for the organization. The publisher's own read modes are another way to keep Claude from writing.
04Which Claude plans can use this ClickUp extension?
No official source publishes plan availability connector by connector, and none of the 819 directory sheets shows it. The general rule is that desktop extensions install on Claude Desktop, while remote connectors are open to all users across Claude's apps, with an Owner or Primary Owner enabling them first on Team and Enterprise. The directory lists this extension for Claude Desktop only. Its sheet shows the current state for your account.
05Does Claude see my whole ClickUp workspace?
It sees what your ClickUp API key sees, which is normally everything your own ClickUp account can reach in the team you configure. The publisher offers no other authentication than that key, so treat it like a password. Its read and read-minimal modes, set in the server environment, keep Claude to reading. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, an owner can still limit what the extension may do for every member, and nobody can lift that restriction from their own settings.
06Why can't Claude find an old task with this extension?
Because its search is narrow by design. The publisher describes it as fuzzy matching on recent tasks with a limited scope, not ClickUp's full search database. If you know the task ID or its link, Claude can still open it directly with the full context tool. For searches across the entire history of a workspace, the publisher itself points to ClickUp's official connector, which relies on the complete search database.
07Should I use this extension or ClickUp's official connector?
The publisher answers that in its own README. Its extension installs locally and signs in with an API key, searches recent tasks only, and has no Chat, with community support. ClickUp's official connector needs no install, signs in with OAuth, searches the full database, supports Chat and Connected Search, and comes with official support. The publisher says to choose the official one when you need those. Both appear in the directory under the same ClickUp name, with different publishers.
08Should I use Claude or an automation tool with ClickUp?
They do different jobs. Claude works in a conversation: you ask it to read a ticket, log time or draft a doc, it does so and then waits. It never reacts on its own when a task is created or closed. When you want a status change to notify a client or create an invoice automatically, that background work belongs to an automation tool rather than to a chat connector or a desktop extension.
