Overview

A whiteboard sketch without leaving the conversation

Explaining an architecture or a process usually means opening a whiteboard tool, dragging boxes and arrows, then pasting a screenshot. With this connector, you describe the picture to Claude. It draws it in Excalidraw's hand-drawn style inside the chat, element by element, and you can open it full screen to adjust it yourself before sharing.

A diagram from one sentence. A product manager asks for a user connecting to an API server that talks to a database. Claude checks the element format with read_me, then draws it with create_view, the shapes appearing one by one in the reply.

Hands-on tweaks. You open the drawing full screen and move a box. The embedded editor stores that state through save_checkpoint, and read_checkpoint brings it back when the drawing reloads.

A link for the team. When the sketch is ready, the editor's export sends it to excalidraw.com through export_to_excalidraw and returns a link you can paste into a ticket, a doc or a chat.

What it will not do: no source mentions an Excalidraw account, so nothing is read from or filed into a personal library, and nothing runs on its own. Claude only draws while answering you. To generate diagrams from data on a schedule, look at automation platforms on the Integrations hub.

Vocabulary

Five words before you connect

The Claude vocabulary used on this page, in a minute.

Connector
The link you set up once between Claude and an outside service, so Claude can use it while it answers you.
Tool
One named job a connector opens to Claude or to its embedded editor. The directory sheet lists every one by name.
Authorization
Usually the service's sign-in screen, where you hand Claude its access. No source describes one for this connector.
Approval
The confirmation Claude waits for before it changes or sends something, shown in the conversation when it matters.
MCP
The shared standard connectors are built on: it is what lets an assistant like Claude talk to an outside service such as Excalidraw.
Connect

Connect the Claude Excalidraw connector in three steps

  1. 01

    Find Excalidraw in Claude

Open Claude's settings, go to Customize then Connectors, and look for Excalidraw. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, an Owner or Primary Owner must turn the connector on before members can use it.

  2. 02

    Add it

Click Connect on its row. If a sign-in window appears, it belongs to the service; no source we hold describes one for Excalidraw. If drawings stop showing later, Disconnect and connect again.

  3. 03

    Try a first drawing

Ask Claude for a simple diagram and check that it appears in the conversation as an interactive drawing you can open full screen. That confirms the in-chat editor works on your side before you rely on it.

Tools

The 5 tools, and who calls each one

Excalidraw gives Claude 5 tools: 3 that read your account, 2 that change something in it.

Five tools, described in the code of Excalidraw's official repository. Claude calls two of them; the other three are called by the editor shown in the chat. Names stay as Claude displays them.

  • 3 read
  • 2 write

What reads or displays (3)

3 tools

Three tools that return a reference, show a drawing or bring back an edited state.

read_me

Returns Excalidraw's element format guide, with colour palettes, examples and tips. The code tells Claude to consult it before its first drawing in a conversation.

When it helps
the very first diagram of a chat, so shapes, labels and arrows come out well formed.

create_view

Renders a hand-drawn diagram from Excalidraw elements right in the conversation, each element streaming in with a drawing animation. The code marks it read-only: it displays, it does not file anything away.

When it helps
a developer wants a quick sequence of services for a design review.
Watch out
input size is capped; for large diagrams the code suggests building in steps.

read_checkpoint

Brings back the stored state of a drawing you reworked by hand, so the editor can restore your version rather than the original. The editor calls it, not Claude.

When it helps
you reopen a diagram you rearranged earlier and want your layout, not Claude's first draft.

What stores or uploads (2)

2 tools

Two tools, used by the embedded editor, that keep your edits or put the drawing on excalidraw.com.

export_to_excalidraw

Approval: see the rule

Uploads the diagram to excalidraw.com and returns a shareable link. Per the code, the embedded editor calls it, not Claude itself.

What Claude asks for
no source describes a confirmation for this tool; the general approval rule below applies.
When it helps
you want colleagues to open and keep editing the sketch outside Claude.
Watch out
the link carries the key to the drawing, so anyone holding it can view it.

Sourcegithub.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

save_checkpoint

Approval: see the rule

Stores the state of a drawing after you edit it by hand in full screen, so the change survives a reload. The code labels it private to the editor.

What Claude asks for
nothing specific is documented here; rely on the default approval rule.
When it helps
you fix a label yourself and want Claude's next pass to build on it.

Approvals

What Claude asks before acting

By default, Claude stops and asks for your go-ahead before any action it takes on an account for you. The request appears in the conversation, right when it matters.

On Team and Enterprise workspaces, owners decide whether a member may let some actions through without being asked again. They can also cap what a connector may do for the whole organization, for example keep reading and close writing, and nobody overrides that from their own account. Claude works with the access of the person using it and nothing more. Here, per the code, the two storing tools are called by the embedded editor, not by Claude.

Plans

Which plans include it

None of the 819 sheets in the official directory displays availability by plan. Connector by connector, the answer is not published anywhere: it is a real gap in the catalogue.

What is published is the general rule: remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner or Primary Owner enables the connector for the organization before members use it. Check its sheet in the official directory for the current status. Only Excalidraw's repository documents this connector; no Claude help article covers it.

Limits

Where this connector stops

A connector is not an automation. Claude draws while it answers you; nothing redraws a diagram when your system changes.

The tool list is an observed floor, not a promise: an administrator can open actions that no public sheet shows. The partner badge is not a security audit, and Anthropic states on every sheet that it does not pick a publisher's tools or guarantee their behavior. Here, everything comes from the open-source repository published under Excalidraw's name, and no source says whether Claude asks for confirmation before export_to_excalidraw or save_checkpoint.

FAQ

Questions about the Claude Excalidraw connector

01What can Claude do with the Excalidraw connector?
Claude can draw hand-drawn style diagrams with Excalidraw directly in the conversation. It first reads Excalidraw's element format guide, then renders the diagram, with each element appearing in turn. You can open the result full screen and edit it; the embedded editor keeps your changes and can bring them back. When you are done, the editor can upload the drawing to excalidraw.com and give you a shareable link. Example prompts from the author include an architecture diagram and a cat.
02Can Claude save or publish my diagrams?
Two tools write. One stores the state of a drawing after you edit it by hand, so your version survives a reload. The other uploads the diagram to excalidraw.com and returns a shareable link. According to the repository's code, both are called by the editor shown in the chat rather than by Claude itself. No source mentions an Excalidraw account, so nothing is filed into a personal library on your behalf.
03Does Claude ask before exporting a diagram?
No source describes a confirmation specific to the export or checkpoint tools, so Claude's default rule applies: it asks for your approval before any action it takes on an account for you. In practice, the code shows those two tools are called by the in-chat editor, not by Claude itself. On Team and Enterprise workspaces, owners decide whether members may let actions through and can restrict the connector for everyone.
04Which Claude plans is the Excalidraw connector available on?
No official source publishes plan availability connector by connector, and none of the 819 directory sheets displays it. The general rule is that remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile, with an Owner or Primary Owner enabling them first on Team and Enterprise. Excalidraw's repository names no Claude plan. The connector's sheet in the official directory is the only place showing its current status for your account.
05Does Claude see my Excalidraw files?
No source describes access to existing Excalidraw files or a personal library. The tools work on the diagram drawn in the current conversation: a format guide, the drawing itself, and the stored state of edits you make in the embedded editor. Exporting sends that one diagram to excalidraw.com. On the Claude side, an owner of a Team or Enterprise workspace can still restrict what the connector may do for everyone.
06Who can open a diagram I shared from Claude?
Anyone who has the link. The export uploads the drawing to excalidraw.com and returns a URL that, according to the repository's code, includes the key needed to open it. So treat it like any shareable link: forward it to the people who should see the diagram and no further. Per the code, the drawing is encrypted and stored on json.excalidraw.com, and only the key in the link opens it. The export is started by the embedded editor, not by Claude.
07Claude or an automation tool for Excalidraw?
They do different jobs, so choose by task rather than by ranking. Claude fits interactive sketching in a conversation: describing a system, getting a draft, adjusting it by hand and sharing the link. It only draws while you are talking to it. An automation platform fits repeated flows that run without you, such as regenerating a diagram whenever a data source changes. Nothing in this connector runs on its own between two conversations.
