Why plug General Legal into Claude
General Legal is a law firm where every review pairs AI with a human attorney. The connector lets you start that work from the conversation you are already having: ask a legal question, send a contract, answer the lawyer's follow-up and download the reviewed version. Claude handles the paperwork around the matter; the legal judgement stays with the attorney.
A question turned into a matter. You are unsure whether a vendor's liability cap is acceptable. start_deal opens a matter from that question, and the firm picks it up.
A contract sent for review. upload_document prepares a one-time upload link for a .docx or .pdf, you drop the file through it, and confirm_upload starts the review and notifies the legal team. The file itself never passes through the chat.
A redline back in hand. list_deals shows where each matter stands, list_thread_messages brings up the attorney's questions, reply_to_thread answers them, and download_contract fetches the released version once it is ready.
Now what the directory listing leaves out. Claude cannot edit or withdraw a message once it is sent, and it does not answer the attorney in your place unless you already gave it the answer. A matter you upload stays invisible in the list until you confirm it. A review takes a few hours to one business day, and nothing pings you when it lands: you ask Claude to check. The site has no n8n, Make or Zapier page for General Legal; the Integrations hub lists the apps that have one.
Five words to know before you start
The vocabulary you will meet once General Legal sits inside Claude.
- Connector
- The link you set up once between Claude and an account you already have, so Claude can work on it while it answers you.
- Tool
- One named job the connector gives Claude. Claude picks the tools it needs on its own; the directory lists them by name.
- Authorization
- The service's own sign-in screen, where you hand Claude the access it will use. Granted once per person, revocable the same way.
- Approval
- The confirmation Claude waits for before it goes ahead with something that changes your account, shown in the chat.
- MCP
- The shared standard connectors are built on: it is what lets an assistant like Claude talk to an outside service.
Connect General Legal to Claude in three steps
- 01
Find General Legal in Claude
Open Claude's settings, go to Customize, then Connectors, and look for General Legal. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, an Owner or Primary Owner has to enable it before members can sign in.
- 02
Start the connection
Click Connect on its row, then sign in to General Legal in the window the firm opens itself. You will also pick the organization whose matters Claude should work on.
- 03
Read the authorization screen
Read the screen before you accept: it belongs to General Legal, not Claude, and it sets what the access covers. Only approve a connection you started yourself. If access expires later, use Disconnect and connect again.
The 8 General Legal tools, sorted by what they do
General Legal gives Claude 8 tools: 4 that read your account, 4 that change something in it.
Two groups: what Claude reads in your matters, and what it opens, sends or confirms. A matter is called a deal by the tools. Tool names stay in English, exactly as Claude shows them.

What Claude reads (4)
4 toolsFour tools that look at your matters, documents and messages without changing them.
download_contract
Fetches a reviewed version that the firm has released, and returns a download link plus a second, authenticated access link. You end up with the redlined file itself.
list_contracts
Lists the document files tied to your organization along with their identifiers, so Claude knows which contract you mean before acting on it.
list_deals
Shows each matter with its status and the document and version identifiers behind it.
list_thread_messages
Reads the conversation thread of a matter: the attorney's questions and every message exchanged on it.
What Claude opens or sends (4)
4 toolsFour tools that create a matter, send a file or a message, or start a review. No source describes a tool-specific confirmation; the general rule below applies.
confirm_upload
Approval: see the ruleConfirms that a file reached General Legal and kicks off the review, which also notifies the legal team.
reply_to_thread
Approval: see the ruleSends your message to the attorney on a matter's thread, so the review can move forward.
start_deal
Approval: see the ruleOpens a new matter from a question or request alone, with no document needed, and hands it to the firm.
upload_document
Approval: see the rulePrepares a secure, one-time upload link for a contract. It can create a new matter, attach the file to an existing one, or add a new version of a document already there.
What Claude asks before it acts
By default, Claude stops and asks before each action it carries out on an account in your place. The request shows up in the conversation.
None of the four tools that open, send or confirm has a documented rule of its own, so that default is what covers them. On Team and Enterprise, workspace owners decide whether members can let some actions through without a prompt, and they can limit what a connector may do for the whole organization, keeping reading open and closing writing, for example. Claude also works with your General Legal access and nothing beyond it: your documents stay visible only to your own organization.
Which plans include it
None of the 819 sheets in the official directory shows availability by plan. That answer, connector by connector, is not published anywhere.
The general rule is public: remote connectors are open to every user on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile, while desktop extensions install on Claude Desktop. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner or Primary Owner enables a connector for the organization first. On the firm's side, a General Legal account is required. For the current status, open the General Legal sheet in the official directory.
Where the General Legal connector stops
A connector is not an automation. Claude calls these tools while it answers you; nothing fires when a matter changes status or the attorney replies.
Everything here comes from General Legal's own documentation: neither Claude's help center nor Anthropic's developer docs have a page on this connector. The list of tools is an observed floor, not a promise about the future. The directory's verification badge is not a security audit, and Anthropic says on every sheet that it does not control which tools a publisher exposes, nor that they behave as announced.
