What changes once Claude can open your Drive
You stop hunting for the file whose name you forgot. Ask Claude for the onboarding brief or last quarter's budget sheet, and it searches your Drive, reads the file and answers from what is actually written in it: Google Docs, Sheets, Slides and PDFs included.
Find a document from a vague memory. search_files and list_recent_files track down the file, then read_file_content pulls its text so Claude can summarize the open decisions.
Check who can see what before you send a link. get_file_permissions lists who a file is shared with, and get_file_metadata gives its details without opening it.
Put Claude's work back into Drive. create_file uploads a new file, while share_file and trash_file handle sharing and cleanup, each pausing for your approval by default.
What Claude will not do: act without being asked. No tool fires when a file lands in a folder; everything happens while Claude is answering you. It also cannot reach files your Google account cannot open. Connect Google Drive to Claude in three steps

Open your connectors
In Claude, go to Customize then Connectors and find Google Drive. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, it only appears once an Owner has added it for the organization; each member then connects their own Google account.

Click Connect and sign in to Google
Click Connect on the Google Drive row, then sign in with your Google account in the window Google opens. When it succeeds, the button reads Disconnect; that is also how you reset a connection that keeps failing.

Check Google's permission screen
Before you accept, Google shows what the access covers. That screen is Google's, not Claude's, and it sets the scope. You can also withdraw the access later from the connections page of your Google account.

Returns a file's details without reading what is inside. Claude can check it is the right file before going further.

Shows who a file is shared with, so you know exactly who can already open it before you do anything else.

read_file_content
Pulls the content of a file so Claude can work from its text: Google Docs, Sheets, Slides and PDFs among them.

update_file
A third name with no description attached in any official source, from the help center to the developer pages. Nothing we found tells what it covers or touches.
What Claude asks before it touches your files
Sharing and trashing are the two actions the help center names explicitly as waiting for you.
By default, every action Claude takes on your behalf needs your explicit approval, and for sharing, moving and trashing files the help center says it asks before each one. Uploading has no dedicated line, so it falls under that same default rule. On Team and Enterprise workspaces, owners decide whether members can let certain actions run without a prompt, and they can restrict the connector for the whole organization, reading files but not creating or editing them, for example. Claude also mirrors your Google permissions: a file you cannot open is out of its reach.
Which plans include the Google Drive connector
None of the 819 directory sheets states availability by plan: the connector-by-connector answer is simply not published.
Anthropic's general rule is that remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile, and desktop extensions install on Claude Desktop. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner or Primary Owner enables the connector for the organization before members sign in. Official pages about the Google connectors do not all phrase this the same way, so check the Google Drive sheet in the directory for your account.
What the connector will not do
A connector does not watch your Drive: its tools only run while Claude answers you, never when a file is added or changed.
The directory's verification badge is not a security audit, and Anthropic says on every sheet that it does not choose a publisher's tools or vouch for how they behave. Here Google builds and runs the connector itself. The limits below are the ones Google and Anthropic document; three tools on the list have no description at all, which is a limit in itself. Live editing of Docs, Sheets and Slides beside the chat is a separate set of connectors, not this one.
