Overview

What changes when Claude knows the ICD-10 code sets

Instead of paging through a code book or an encoder, you ask Claude a coding question in plain English. It finds the matching code, checks whether it is valid for a HIPAA-covered transaction and shows you the whole code family around it. Anthropic publishes this connector itself, and it reads a public reference database, never a patient chart.

Catch a bad code before the claim goes out. A revenue cycle analyst wants to know if E11.9 is billable. validate_code separates a complete code from a category header, and lookup_code returns its short and long descriptions.

Code to the highest specificity. A CDI specialist asks for the full type 2 diabetes tree. get_hierarchy pulls all 117 codes under E11, complications included, so she can query the physician for detail.

Find an inpatient procedure. For a laparoscopic appendectomy, search_procedure_by_description searches with PCS anatomical terms such as appendix and resection.

What it will not do, in plain terms: by default, its sheet exposes only read tools. No tool codes a chart, submits a claim or touches your billing system. The codes are those of the US healthcare system, and nothing runs on its own: Claude only searches while it answers you. For more examples, browse the Integrations hub.

Vocabulary

Five terms before you connect

The vocabulary of this connector in one minute.

Connector
The link you set up once between Claude and an outside service, so Claude can use it while it answers you.
Tool
One named lookup a connector hands to Claude. Claude picks which ones to call by itself, and the directory lists them by name.
Authorization
A service's own sign-in screen, where you grant the access Claude will use; given once, per person, and revocable.
Approval
The confirmation Claude waits for before changing an account, shown in the conversation at the moment it matters.
MCP
The shared standard connectors run on: it is what lets an assistant like Claude talk to an outside service such as this code database.
Connect

Connect ICD-10 Codes to Claude in three steps

  1. 01

    Find the connector

Open Claude's settings, go to Customize, then Connectors, and search for ICD-10 Codes. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, an Owner or Primary Owner has to switch it on for the organization before anyone else can use it.

  2. 02

    Start the connection

Click Connect on its row. If the connector ever stops responding, use Disconnect and connect again: that is the documented fix whenever a connection goes stale.

  3. 03

    Read what access covers

If an authorization screen appears, read it before you accept, because it defines what the access covers. Here the data is a public code set, with no patient records behind it.

Tools

The 9 tools of the ICD-10 Codes connector

ICD-10 Codes gives Claude 9 tools: 9 that read your account, 0 that change something in it.

Anthropic's ICD-10 tutorial describes each tool below by its exact name. None of them does anything beyond searching or checking.

What Claude looks up (9)

9 tools

Nine lookups in the 2026 code sets. None of them changes anything.

get_hierarchy

Unfolds the full tree of codes below a category prefix, with parent-child links and how complications branch out. For E11 that means all 117 type 2 diabetes codes.

When it helps
you want to be sure no more specific code exists under the one you picked.

get_by_category

Walks diagnosis codes by chapter, given as a single letter such as E for endocrine diseases, or by a three-character category like E11.

When it helps
you are training a new coder and want to tour one chapter end to end.

get_by_body_system

Lists ICD-10-PCS procedure codes for one anatomical system, keyed on the first character of the code: 0 for the central nervous system, D for gastrointestinal.

When it helps
you want every gastrointestinal procedure code in one list before building a coding checklist.

lookup_code

Once you know the exact code, Claude brings back its complete record: short description, long description and validity for HIPAA transactions. Works for diagnoses and procedures alike.

When it helps
you need the official wording for E11.65 before it goes into a discharge summary.

search_diagnosis_by_code

Finds diagnosis codes from an exact match or the start of a code. Typing E11 surfaces every type 2 diabetes code and its related conditions.

When it helps
you remember a code prefix and need the variant that fits the chart.

Sourceclaude.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

search_diagnosis_by_description

Searches diagnosis codes from a disease name or clinical term, ignoring case, and keeps only codes that can be billed.

When it helps
a physician notes "myocardial infarction" and you want the candidate codes.
Watch out
category headers are filtered out automatically, since they cannot be billed.

search_procedure_by_code

Finds ICD-10-PCS procedure codes by exact match or prefix. 0DT, for instance, returns gastrointestinal resections, handy for sweeping a procedure family systematically.

When it helps
you start from 0DT to see every resection variant in the gastrointestinal family, one prefix at a time.

Sourceclaude.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

search_procedure_by_description

Searches procedure codes from anatomical terms and root operations such as appendix, resection or percutaneous endoscopic approach.

When it helps
you are coding a laparoscopic case and need the candidate codes.
Watch out
PCS uses its own standard terms, not the everyday name of the surgery.

validate_code

Confirms a code exists in the database and is accepted in a HIPAA-covered transaction, telling a billable code apart from a category header.

When it helps
right before a claim is submitted, to make sure no category header slipped in.

Approvals

What Claude asks before it acts

By default, Claude stops and asks for your go-ahead before each action it takes on an account for someone. With ICD-10 Codes, every tool is a plain lookup.

The tutorial mentions no confirmation step for these nine tools, and no other source does either, so the default rule is the reference. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, owners decide whether a member may let some actions through without confirming each time. They can also cap what a connector does for the whole organization, and nobody gets around that setting from a personal account. Claude never gets more than the person who connected it.

Plans

Which Claude plans include ICD-10 Codes

None of the 819 sheets in the official directory shows availability by plan. Connector by connector, that information is not published anywhere.

The general rule is sourced: remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner or Primary Owner enables the connector before members can sign in to it. For this connector's current state, check its sheet in the official directory, the only place that shows it for your own account.

Limits

Where the ICD-10 Codes connector stops

A connector is not an automation. Claude calls these tools while it answers you, so nothing kicks off on its own.

By default, its sheet exposes only read tools, and that is an observed floor, not a promise: an admin can open up actions that no public sheet lists. An Anthropic tutorial documents the connector, rather than a help center article of its own. Even with Anthropic as publisher, the directory badge is not a security audit, and the directory does not guarantee tools behave as described, so check who publishes what you connect.

FAQ

Claude ICD-10 Codes connector questions

01What can Claude do with the ICD-10 Codes connector?
Claude queries the 2026 US ICD-10 code sets while it answers you. Its nine tools search diagnoses or procedures by description or by code, open the record of a known code, check whether it is valid for a HIPAA transaction, and walk a code family by category, chapter or body system. You ask your coding question in everyday language, and Claude chains the right lookups on its own before giving you the answer.
02Can Claude code a chart or change codes?
No tool on the sheet does that. The nine tools search, read and check; none of them writes to a chart, a claim or a billing system. Treat this as what the sheet shows by default, not a permanent guarantee: an admin can open up actions that appear on no public sheet. In practice the connector reads a reference code set, so there is no personal account behind it that Claude could change.
03Does Claude ask before using the ICD-10 tools?
The general rule is that Claude asks for confirmation before each action it takes on an account for someone. No source describes a confirmation tied to a specific ICD-10 tool, so the default rule is the reference, even though all nine tools only look things up. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, owners decide whether members may let some actions through without approving each one, and they can restrict the connector for the whole organization.
04Which Claude plans give access to ICD-10 Codes?
No official source publishes plan availability connector by connector, and none of the 819 directory sheets shows it. The published general rule says remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile, with an Owner or Primary Owner switching them on first for Team and Enterprise. Check the ICD-10 Codes sheet in the directory while signed in: it is the only place that shows the real state for your account.
05Can Claude see patient records through this connector?
No. According to Anthropic's tutorial, the connector queries a database of the 2026 code sets published by US agencies, stored on the provider side, and nothing else. It holds code structure, descriptions and HIPAA validity flags. No patient chart, billing system or coding history is within its reach. The agencies behind the data are CMS and CDC/NCHS, and the code sets are the ones the US healthcare system uses, so what you get back is reference material: code structure, wording and billing validity, never anything about a person.
06Why won't Claude accept E11 as a billable code?
Because a short code like E11 or E11.3 is a category header: it groups codes rather than describing a billable diagnosis. Anthropic's tutorial states that only a fully specified code at maximum detail is valid in a HIPAA transaction. validate_code makes exactly that distinction, and get_hierarchy shows the more specific codes available under the header so you can pick the one that matches the documentation. For E11 alone, that tree runs to 117 codes.
07Claude or an automation tool for ICD-10 coding?
They do different jobs. Claude with this connector is for coding in conversation: you ask, it searches, checks and explains the hierarchy, and you make the call. An automation tool is built to run a process without you, such as a batch over many claims. The connector triggers nothing by itself, so no code gets checked until you ask Claude about it in a chat. That makes the two complementary rather than rivals.
