Overview

What changes once Claude can read your Blackbaud data

A development officer usually opens Raiser's Edge NXT, searches a name, clicks through the profile, then the gift history, then the event list. With the connector, the same person asks Claude a plain question about a donor or a gala and gets the answer pulled live from the database, ready to use in a meeting brief or a letter.

Prepare a donor meeting in one question. search_for_constituent_by_name finds the person, even from a partial name, and get_constituent_details brings back contact details, affiliations and giving history.

Review what someone gave. get_gift_details shows amounts, dates, donor and campaign, which is what you need before thanking someone properly.

Look back at an event. search_for_event_by_name and get_event_details retrieve dates, locations and funds raised for a past gala or run, which helps when a board member asks how this year compares with the last.

What it will not do, as far as any source says: none of the documented tools records a gift, edits a donor or sends an email. The tutorial does mention drafting personalized thank-you notes, but it ties that to no named tool. Nothing runs on its own either: Claude reads the data only while it answers you. The Integrations hub lists the other platform families.

Vocabulary

Five words before you start

The Claude terms used on this page, each explained once.

Connector
A link set up once between Claude and an account you already have, so Claude can work in it while it answers you.
Tool
One named action the connector gives Claude. Claude chooses which ones to call, and the directory sheet lists them all by name.
Authorization
Blackbaud's sign-in screen, where you hand Claude the access it will use afterwards. It is granted once per person and can be revoked.
Approval
The confirmation Claude waits for before doing something that changes an account, shown in the conversation when it matters.
MCP
The shared standard connectors run on: it is what allows an assistant like Claude to talk to an outside service such as Blackbaud.
Connect

Connect the Claude Blackbaud connector in three steps

  1. 01

    Find Blackbaud in Claude

Open Claude's settings, then Customize and Connectors, and look for Blackbaud. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, an Owner or Primary Owner must enable the connector for the organization before members can each authenticate.

  2. 02

    Launch the connection

Click Connect on the Blackbaud row and sign in with your Blackbaud ID in the window Blackbaud opens. If the link breaks later, Disconnect and connect again; access can also be withdrawn from the Blackbaud side.

  3. 03

    Review the authorization

Read Blackbaud's authorization screen before granting permissions. It belongs to Blackbaud, not to Claude, and it decides what Claude's access covers. Claude's tutorial says the account shows as linked once this is done.

Tools

The 6 tools, grouped by what they do

Blackbaud gives Claude 6 tools: 5 that read your account, 0 that change something in it, and 1 no official source describes.

Five tools match a capability Claude's Blackbaud tutorial describes; one is only named on the directory sheet. Names stay exactly as Claude shows them.

What Claude reads (5)

5 tools

Five tools that look at donors, gifts and events in Raiser's Edge NXT without changing them.

get_constituent_details

Opens the full record of one constituent: contact information, affiliations and giving history, as stored in Raiser's Edge NXT.

When it helps
a major gifts officer wants a one-page picture of a trustee before lunch with her.
Watch out
the tutorial advises full names for accurate lookups, so a vague name can land on the wrong person.

search_for_constituent_by_name

Searches your database for donors by full or partial name and returns the matching people, which is often the first step before any other lookup.

When it helps
you remember only a family name and want to see every Williams on file.

search_for_event_by_name

Looks up fundraising events by name or keyword so Claude can pick the right one before reading its details.

When it helps
the board asks how the last few spring galas compared, and you need to locate each one first.

get_event_details

Retrieves the facts of one event once found: its dates, its location and the funds it raised. It usually follows search_for_event_by_name, which locates the event first.

When it helps
planning next year's charity run, you want the figures of the last edition in front of you.

get_gift_details

Shows donation details: amount, date, donor and the campaign it went to, so Claude can summarize a giving pattern or prepare an acknowledgment.

When it helps
before a thank-you call, you check what a supporter gave to the Building Fund this year.
Watch out
the tutorial says history requests work well over 1 to 3 years.

Not documented (1)

1 tool

A tool listed by name only. No official source says what it does, so this page does not describe it.

generate_content

This tool appears on the directory sheet by name only; no official source describes what it does or whether it changes anything in Blackbaud. It is therefore left undescribed here, and the general approval rule below is what applies to it.

Approvals

What Claude asks before acting

By default, Claude stops and asks for confirmation before each action it takes on an account for someone, right in the conversation.

The five documented tools read data, and no source describes a confirmation for any Blackbaud tool, including the undocumented one. On Team and Enterprise workspaces, owners decide whether members may let certain actions through without a prompt each time, and they can cap what a connector may do for the whole organization; nobody overrides that from their own account. Claude also works with your rights only: the tutorial states it reaches just the data your Blackbaud account authorizes.

Plans

Which plans include Blackbaud

No official source publishes plan availability connector by connector: 0 of the 819 directory sheets shows it, and the gap is real.

What is published is the general rule. Remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile, and desktop extensions install on Claude Desktop. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner or Primary Owner opens a connector for the organization before members connect. The Blackbaud sheet in the official directory is the one place showing its current state for your account.

Limits

Where the Blackbaud connector stops

A connector is not an automation. Claude calls these tools while it answers you, so nothing happens when a new gift lands in the database.

By default, the sheet exposes only reading among the documented tools, an observed floor rather than a guarantee: an administrator can open actions no public sheet lists. The partner badge is not a security audit, and Anthropic notes on every sheet that it neither chooses the tools a publisher exposes nor guarantees they behave as announced. Connect what comes from a publisher you know. For a connector where writing is documented, compare with the Claude activecampaign connector.

FAQ

Questions about the Claude Blackbaud connector

01What can Claude do with the Blackbaud connector?
Claude can look up your Raiser's Edge NXT data while it answers you. Its documented tools search donors by full or partial name, open a donor's profile with contact details, affiliations and giving history, show gift amounts, dates and campaigns, and find fundraising events with their dates, locations and funds raised. A sixth tool, generate_content, is listed by name only. Claude's tutorial also mentions help with drafting personalized thank-you notes.
02Can Claude add gifts or edit donor records in Blackbaud?
No documented tool does that. The five tools that a source describes all read constituent, gift or event data, and the sixth tool has no official description, so nothing says it writes either. By default, the sheet therefore exposes only reading, which is an observed floor and not a promise. Recording a gift or correcting an address still happens in Raiser's Edge NXT, by someone with the rights to do it.
03Does Claude ask before it uses my Blackbaud data?
By default, Claude asks for confirmation before each action it takes on an account for someone. No source describes a specific prompt for any Blackbaud tool, so that general rule covers them all, including generate_content. In an organization workspace, owners decide whether members may let some actions pass without a prompt each time, and they can restrict what the connector may do for everyone. Claude also reaches only the data your Blackbaud account authorizes.
04Which Claude plans is the Blackbaud connector available on?
No official source publishes plan availability for a single connector, and none of the 819 directory sheets lists it. The general rule says remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile, and that on Team and Enterprise an Owner or Primary Owner enables them before members connect. The Blackbaud sheet in the directory shows the current state for your account; it is the one place that does.
05Can Claude see every donor in our database?
Only the ones you can see yourself. Claude's tutorial states that Claude accesses only the data your Blackbaud account authorizes, and a Blackbaud marketplace admin decides beforehand which scopes the app receives for constituent and event data. On the Claude side, an owner can also restrict what the connector may do for the whole organization. A record outside your permissions does not show up in the conversation. In short, Claude never sees more of the database than you do.
06Can Claude write thank-you letters to our donors?
It can help draft them, according to Claude's tutorial, which lists personalized thank-you notes referencing specific gifts among the uses. The tutorial does not say which tool does it, and no source says anything is sent from Blackbaud. It also asks you to review AI-written messages before sending, especially with sensitive donor data. Sending stays your call. Treat the draft as a starting point that you edit, not a finished letter.
07Claude or an automation tool for Blackbaud?
They answer different needs, so the choice depends on the task rather than on a winner. Claude fits questions asked in the moment: who is this donor, what did she give, how did the gala do. An automation tool runs a fixed sequence without anyone watching, for example on every new gift, which this connector does not do. It has no trigger, and Claude reads your data only while it answers.
