What it changes for a comms or PR team
You ask Claude in plain English and it goes into Meltwater's index for the articles, posts and aggregated numbers that answer the question, then replies in the conversation. Meltwater describes its connector exactly that way: Claude reads your question in natural language and returns actual content from the index, not a summary of someone else's report.
A coverage readout before the board call. Your VP wants to know how last month went: unified_retrieval_statistics_retrieval_tool returns the numbers and trends, then unified_retrieval_document_retrieval_tool surfaces the pieces that drove it.
A Boolean string without the headache. Describe what you want to track in one sentence and unified_retrieval_query_gen_tool turns it into a Meltwater query, spelling variants and noise exclusions included.
Saved-search housekeeping. listening_list_searches shows what exists, listening_update_search adds a rival's new product name, and listening_delete_search clears an old campaign once you approve it.
What Claude will not do: post or publish anything for you. Meltwater states the connector is read-only for media content, and its only writes concern your own saved searches. Nothing runs in the background either; no alert fires when mentions spike. That kind of always-on watch belongs to an automation tool, which is a different job; the Integrations hub covers that side.
The vocabulary in one minute
Five terms worth knowing before you connect Meltwater.
- Connector
- The link you set up once between Claude and an account you already have, so Claude can work in it while it answers you.
- Tool
- One named capability the connector gives Claude. Claude picks the ones it needs by itself; the directory sheet lists them all.
- Authorization
- Meltwater's own sign-in screen, where you hand Claude the access it will use. Granted once per person, and withdrawn the same way.
- Approval
- The confirmation Claude waits for in the chat before it goes ahead with something that changes your account.
- MCP
- The shared standard connectors are built on; it is what lets an assistant such as Claude talk to an outside service.
Connect Meltwater to Claude in three steps
- 01
Find Meltwater in Claude
In Claude, open Customize, then Connectors, and locate Meltwater in the list. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, an Owner or Primary Owner has to switch it on before members can sign in individually.
- 02
Start the connection
Click Connect on its row and sign in with your Meltwater credentials in the window Meltwater opens itself. If the link ever breaks, use Disconnect and connect again.
- 03
Review the authorization screen
Read the authorization screen before you accept. It belongs to Meltwater, not to Claude, and it sets how far the access reaches. You can also withdraw that access later from your Meltwater account.
All 10 tools, grouped by what they do
Meltwater gives Claude 10 tools: 7 that read your account, 3 that change something in it.
Two groups: what Claude looks up, and what it changes in your saved searches. Tool names stay exactly as Claude shows them.

Tools index
What Claude reads (7)
7 toolsSeven tools that consult the index and your setup without altering them.
explore_plus_list_searches
Lists the searches held in your Explore+ private index, a custom index into which those searches collect a curated set of content.
listening_get_search
Opens a single saved search and reports its name along with the full Boolean query behind it.
listening_update_search.listening_list_filter_sets
Returns your saved filter sets: pre-configured combinations of source, language, country or other filters that you can reuse.
listening_list_searches
Pulls every saved search in the account with its name, ID and query type.
explore_plus_list_searches.unified_retrieval_document_retrieval_tool
Searches Meltwater's index for articles and posts about a topic, brand, person or event. Claude can narrow by platform, sentiment, country, language, date range, hashtag or author handle.
unified_retrieval_query_gen_tool
Turns a plain description of what you want to monitor into a Meltwater Boolean query with synonyms, abbreviations, spelling variants and noise exclusions. You get a query to review, not a stored search.
unified_retrieval_statistics_retrieval_tool
Gives you aggregated figures and breakdowns instead of a stack of individual articles: counts, trends over time, side-by-side comparisons and share of voice.
unified_retrieval_document_retrieval_tool.What Claude changes (3)
3 toolsThree tools scoped to your saved searches. Deletion is the only one whose confirmation the publisher describes.
listening_create_search
Approval: see the ruleSaves a brand-new search in your Meltwater account under a name you pick. Meltwater notes that Claude usually runs the query builder first so the stored Boolean string is clean.
listening_delete_search
Asks you firstPermanently removes a saved search from your account. There is no undo, which is why it is the one action Meltwater says Claude checks with you first.
listening_update_search
Approval: see the ruleEdits an existing search: its name, its query, or both together.
What Claude checks with you first
By default, Claude pauses and asks for your go-ahead before every action it takes on an account on your behalf. The request shows up in the chat, right when it matters.
Meltwater adds one detail of its own: deleting a saved search goes through your approval, because it cannot be reversed. On Team and Enterprise workspaces, owners decide whether members may let some actions through without being asked each time, and they can cap a connector for the whole organisation, keeping reads open and shutting writes. Nobody overrides that from their own account. And Claude only ever acts with your own Meltwater permissions.
Which plans it's available on
None of the 819 sheets in the official directory shows plan availability. Connector by connector, that information is not published anywhere.
The general rule is published: remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner or Primary Owner enables a connector for the organisation before members connect one by one. For the current status, the connector's sheet in the official directory is the only reference. On the Meltwater side, your subscription with them is what counts.
Where this connector stops
A connector is not an automation. Claude calls these tools while it answers you: no Monday report goes out on its own, and no alert fires on a mentions spike.
Only the publisher documents this connector; neither Claude's help centre nor Anthropic's developer docs have a page on it. The directory badge is not a security audit either, and Anthropic says so on every sheet: it does not pick the tools a publisher exposes and does not guarantee they behave as described. Connect what comes from a publisher you know. On data, Meltwater states that what the connector retrieves serves only to answer your question within that conversation. And a sheet whose writes stop at saved searches is an observed floor, not a guarantee: an administrator can open actions that no public page lists.
