Overview

What changes when Claude can read Microsoft Learn

Ask Claude how to configure an Azure service or call a .NET API and, with this connector on, it can check its answer against Microsoft's own pages before replying. Results come back with the article title and its URL, so you can open the source yourself instead of trusting a paraphrase.

An answer you can verify. You ask how a Microsoft 365 setting behaves: microsoft_docs_search pulls the most relevant passages, each one a self-contained excerpt tied to an article title and a page you can click. Microsoft lists Azure, .NET and Microsoft 365 among the technologies the documentation covers.

The whole procedure, not a fragment. When a search excerpt stops halfway through a tutorial, microsoft_docs_fetch brings back the latest complete version of the article.

Code that matches the current docs. Before a snippet for an Azure service is written, microsoft_code_sample_search retrieves an official example to start from.

Now the edges. Everything here is public documentation: no training records, no learner profile, no data from your tenant. Nothing runs on its own either; Claude calls these tools while it answers, and no page update ever pings you. If you want that kind of background job, it belongs to an automation tool, a different line of work collected on the Integrations hub.

Vocabulary

Five words before you start

The vocabulary you will meet in Claude's settings.

Connector
The link you set up once between Claude and an outside service, so Claude can use that service while it answers you.
Tool
One named thing a connector lets Claude do. Claude picks the ones it needs as it replies; the directory lists them by name.
Authorization
The service's own sign-in screen, where you grant the access Claude will use. Given once per person and revocable the same way.
Approval
The confirmation Claude waits for before it goes ahead with something that changes an account, shown in the chat when it matters.
MCP
The common standard behind every connector, the piece that lets an assistant like Claude exchange with a service outside it.
Connect

Add Microsoft Learn to Claude in three steps

  1. 01

    Find it in your settings

In Claude, open Customize, then Connectors, and look for Microsoft Learn in the list. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, an Owner or Primary Owner has to switch it on for the organization first.

  2. 02

    Start the connection

Click Connect on its row. If the service opens its own window, follow it there. Should the link ever break, use Disconnect and connect it again from the same row.

  3. 03

    Check what you grant

If an authorization screen appears, read it before you confirm: it belongs to the service, not to Claude, and it sets what the access covers. Any access granted there can be withdrawn later from the service side.

Tools

The 3 tools, grouped by what they do

Microsoft Learn gives Claude 3 tools: 3 that read your account, 0 that change something in it.

Every tool on this connector reads. Tool names stay in English, exactly as Claude displays them.

What Claude reads (3)

3 tools

Three tools that look things up in Microsoft's public documentation.

microsoft_docs_fetch

Pulls one Microsoft Learn page in full and hands it to Claude as clean text, so nothing stops at an excerpt boundary. It covers Azure, .NET, Microsoft 365 and the rest of Microsoft's catalogue.

When it helps
a search passage stops halfway through a procedure and you need the rest of the page.

Approvals

What Claude asks before it acts

Claude's default is to pause for your confirmation before any action it takes on an account on someone's behalf. With three lookup tools on public pages, that question rarely comes up here.

On Team and Enterprise, workspace owners decide whether members may let some actions through without being asked each time. They can also limit what any connector may do across the organization, keeping reads and closing writes, for instance, and nobody overrides that from a personal account. Claude also works with the rights of the person connected and nothing more. The official per-tool label, read-only versus write and delete, only shows inside a connected account's settings.

Plans

Which plans include it

None of the 819 sheets in the official directory states plan availability. That answer, connector by connector, is not published anywhere.

The general rule is published: remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile, and on Team and Enterprise an Owner or Primary Owner turns a connector on before members can use it. Microsoft adds that its server is public and free on its side, which says nothing about Claude plans. For the current state on your account, check the connector's sheet in the official directory.

Limits

Where this connector stops

This connector does not automate anything. Claude calls these tools while it answers you; nothing fires when Microsoft publishes or edits a page.

Only Microsoft documents this connector: neither Claude's help center nor Anthropic's developer docs has a page for it, so the limits below are Microsoft's own. A tool list showing only reads is an observed floor, not a guarantee. The directory's verification badge is not a security audit either, and Anthropic says on every sheet that it does not choose the tools a publisher exposes. Connect what comes from a publisher you know, which here is Microsoft. For background jobs, look at the Integrations hub instead.

FAQ

Questions about the Claude Microsoft Learn connector

01What can Claude do with the Microsoft Learn connector?
Claude can look things up in Microsoft's official documentation while it answers you. The three tools on the directory sheet search the documentation and return short passages with titles and links, fetch a complete Learn article as clean text, and find code samples published on Microsoft's pages. Typical uses are checking how an Azure or Microsoft 365 setting behaves, following a full tutorial, or starting a snippet from an official example instead of an older pattern.
02Can Claude write, send or delete anything through Microsoft Learn?
No tool on this connector writes. All three read public documentation, and Microsoft marks them as read-only in the tool list its own server publishes. There is no account behind the connector, so there is nothing of yours for Claude to change. That said, a list showing only reads is an observed floor: treat it as what the sheet exposes today, and check the directory sheet again if the tool count ever moves.
03Does Claude ask before using these tools?
By default, Claude asks for confirmation before any action it carries out on an account for someone. No source describes a confirmation tied to one of the Microsoft Learn tools, so that default rule is what covers them. Since all three only search and read public pages, the question matters less here than on connectors that send or edit. On Team and Enterprise, workspace owners also decide which actions members may let through without a prompt.
04Which Claude plans is it available on?
No official source publishes plan availability connector by connector, and none of the 819 directory sheets shows it. The general rule says remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile, and that on Team and Enterprise an Owner or Primary Owner enables a connector before members can use it. Microsoft calls its server free, which concerns Microsoft only. The connector's directory sheet shows the current state for your account.
05Does Claude see my Microsoft Learn profile or training history?
No. Microsoft states that the server contains publicly available documentation, not training or user profile information. Microsoft also says no authentication is required to access its server, so there is no Microsoft account linked to Claude through this connector, and nothing personal for the tools to reach. What Claude gets back is the public documentation itself: passages with their article title and URL, full articles converted to text, and code samples taken from Microsoft documentation pages. Anything outside that public documentation stays out of this connector's scope.
06How fresh are the answers Claude gets from Microsoft Learn?
Fairly fresh, with a lag. Microsoft says the knowledge service behind the connector refreshes incrementally after content updates and performs a full refresh once a day. A page that changed in the last few minutes may therefore come back in its previous version. When the exact wording matters, ask Claude for the article link it used and open it yourself, since every search result carries the title and URL of its source page.
07Should I use Claude or an automation tool for Microsoft documentation?
They do different jobs, so pick by use. Claude with this connector answers a question in the moment: you ask, it searches or fetches the right page and replies with sources. An automation tool runs on its own schedule, for example to watch something and act when it changes, which this connector never does. If your need is a conversation about how a Microsoft product works, Claude fits. If it is a recurring background task, look at automation.
