Overview

What changes for anyone researching U.S. law

You ask a U.S. law question in the chat, naming a jurisdiction and a specific issue, and Claude pulls the relevant authorities from Paxton by itself. It brings back the passages that support the answer, with links to the source, so you read the authority yourself instead of trusting a summary.

Open the full source. Paxton says the connector searches U.S. statutes, regulations, rules and case law; once a search returns a source, get_source_text opens it in full so the exact wording is on screen.

Work the case law. search_case_law finds court opinions with jurisdiction and date filters, and get_citator_info shows which cases cite a decision, which ones it cites, and the treatment information available.

Cover agency decisions. search_administrative_decisions finds EEOC and NLRB decisions along with their supporting passages. A fifth tool, search_legal_research, has no description of its own in any source.

What Claude doesn't do with Paxton: it won't read your private matter files, upload anything, edit a matter or file a pleading. Paxton also warns that a missing status result never confirms an authority is good law. Nothing runs in the background either, so no alert fires when a new opinion comes down. That kind of monitoring belongs to an automation tool, a different job; the Integrations hub covers that side.

Vocabulary

Words to know before you connect

Five terms the rest of this page relies on.

Connector
The bridge you set up once between Claude and an account you already hold, so it can work there during its answers.
Tool
A named capability the connector lends Claude. It decides on its own which ones to call; the directory lists them by name.
Authorization
The service's sign-in page, where you grant Claude the access it will use. Once per person, and revocable the same way.
Approval
The green light Claude waits for before an action that changes something in an account, requested right in the chat.
MCP
The protocol every connector shares, the piece that lets an assistant like Claude talk to a third-party service.
Connect

Connect Paxton to Claude in three steps

  1. 01

    Spot Paxton in Claude

In Claude's settings, open Customize, then Connectors, and look for Paxton Legal Research. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, an Owner or Primary Owner enables it for the organization first, then each person connects.

  2. 02

Sign in with your Paxton account

Click Connect on its row and sign in through the window Paxton opens. Every person authorizes their own connection. If the link breaks, hit Disconnect and connect again.

  3. 03

    Accept the authorization screen

Read this screen before you agree: it's Paxton's, not Claude's, and it decides what the access covers. You can withdraw that access later from your Paxton account.

Tools

The 5 tools, grouped by what they do

Paxton Legal Research gives Claude 5 tools: 4 that read your account, 0 that change something in it, and 1 no official source describes.

Four tools consult legal sources; the fifth has no description of its own in any source. Names stay in English, exactly as Claude shows them.

What Claude reads (4)

4 tools

Four search and reading tools over Paxton's legal sources.

get_citator_info

For a given case, lists the decisions that cite it, the ones it cites, and whatever treatment information Paxton has on it. The citation history comes back alongside the case itself, inside the conversation.

When it helps
a case is about to support an argument and you need to see how other decisions have cited it.
Watch out
Paxton warns that a missing status result doesn't confirm the case is still good law.

get_source_text

Opens in full the legal source a search returned, so the complete text replaces the passage that surfaced in the results. It works on what a search has already found rather than running a new query.

When it helps
a search surfaced a provision or an opinion and you need the whole text, not the excerpt.

search_administrative_decisions

Searches the EEOC and NLRB decisions Paxton indexes and returns them with the passages that support the answer. It's the one tool on the sheet aimed at agency decisions rather than courts or legislation.

When it helps
the question turns on how the EEOC or the NLRB has decided a point.

search_case_law

Finds court opinions, filtered by jurisdiction and by date. Paxton suggests asking Claude to tell holdings apart from arguments or quoted material once the opinions are in.

When it helps
you need the opinions from one jurisdiction over a given period.
Watch out
Paxton recommends starting from a jurisdiction and a specific research question.

Approvals

What Claude asks before acting

By default, Claude pauses and asks for your go-ahead before each action it takes on an account for you. The prompt shows up in the chat, at the right moment.

Paxton presents its connector as research only, and no source describes a confirmation specific to any of the five tools. The publisher notes that Claude sends Paxton the arguments of the tools you authorize. On Team and Enterprise, Owners choose whether a member may let some actions through without being asked again, and can restrict the connector for the whole organization. No one gets around that from their own account. And whatever happens, Claude only ever works with your Paxton permissions.

Plans

Which plans it's available on

Across the 819 sheets in the official directory, none publishes plan availability. The per-connector answer doesn't exist anywhere.

What is published is the general rule: remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner or Primary Owner enables the connector for the organization before members connect. For the current state, the Paxton sheet in the official directory is what counts, checked from your own account.

Limits

Where this connector stops

A connector isn't an automation. Claude calls these tools while it answers, so no search reruns by itself when a new opinion is published.

By default the directory sheet only exposes read tools, and Paxton says the same. That's an observed floor, not a guarantee: an admin can open actions that appear on no public sheet. This connector is documented by its publisher alone; the rest of the family lives on the Claude connectors hub. The directory badge isn't an audit either, since Anthropic doesn't choose the tools a publisher exposes or vouch for how they behave.

FAQ

FAQ about the Claude Paxton Legal Research connector

01What can Claude do with the Paxton Legal Research connector?
Claude can search U.S. legal sources through Paxton and bring back the passages that matter, with links you can check. Paxton says the connector covers U.S. statutes, regulations, rules and case law plus indexed EEOC and NLRB decisions. Four tools are documented: case-law search filtered by jurisdiction and date, agency decision search, full source text and a case's citation history; a fifth has no description of its own. Paxton recommends starting with a jurisdiction and a specific question.
02Can Claude edit my matters or file documents through Paxton?
No. By default the directory sheet only exposes research, and Paxton calls the connector read-only. It doesn't edit matters, upload documents, file pleadings or open other customers' files. Treat that as an observed floor, not a promise, since an admin can open actions that never appear on a public page. Paxton adds that source links may ask you to sign in to Paxton separately, and that sharing the connector's address grants nobody access.
03Does Claude ask before it queries Paxton?
By default, Claude asks for confirmation before each action it takes on an account on your behalf. No source describes a rule specific to Paxton's tools, which the publisher presents as research only. On Team and Enterprise, Owners decide whether members can let some actions through without a prompt, and they can restrict the connector for the whole organization. Paxton also points out that the arguments of the tools you authorize are sent to it.
04Which plans is the Paxton connector available on?
No official source publishes plan availability for this connector, and no directory sheet shows it. Anthropic's general rule: remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile, with an Owner enabling them first on Team and Enterprise. On Paxton's side, you also need an account with legal research access turned on. The directory sheet, opened from your own account, remains the only up-to-date view of where things stand for you.
05Does Claude see our whole Paxton account?
Claude follows your account and organization permissions at Paxton, nothing more. Each person authorizes their own connection, and sharing the connector's address gives nobody else access. Above all, the connector only searches legal research sources, never customers' private matter files. On top of that, a Team or Enterprise Owner can restrict the connector for the whole organization, and a member can't undo that alone. What Claude reaches is never wider than what you could open yourself.
06Is a Paxton result enough to rely on in a filing?
No. Paxton warns that results and citation history need professional review, and that an available result doesn't show it's complete or current. A missing status entry isn't confirmation that an authority is good law. Source links may also ask you to sign in to Paxton separately. The publisher advises keeping unnecessary confidential facts out of your questions, since they travel between Claude and Paxton. The privacy policy and terms on Paxton's side cover the rest.
07Claude or an automation tool for Paxton?
They do different jobs. Claude with Paxton fits when a legal question comes up right now: a provision to find, an opinion to read, a citation to check while you draft. An automation tool fits when a task has to run without you, on a schedule or on an event. None of the connector's tools starts on its own, so a case-law search that has to repeat on its own belongs with the second kind of tool.
