Why let Claude do your Reddit digging
Reddit is where people say what they really think about a product, a tool or a job, With this extension, Claude can go and read it for you: you ask a question in plain words, and it calls the tools that fetch posts, comment threads or a user's history from public Reddit.
A quick read on a community. You want to see what a niche community is posting right now. browse_subreddit pulls its posts sorted hot, new, top, rising or controversial.
The full conversation, not just the headline. A thread about your product is circulating. get_post_details brings back the post with its comments, from a link or a post ID.
Context on who's talking. An account keeps mentioning your brand. user_analysis returns that account's posts, comments and karma, and reddit_explain decodes any slang along the way.
Across all three, search_reddit is the entry point when you don't know which subreddit to start from: it searches all of Reddit or only the communities you name.
What it won't do: none of the five tools posts, comments, votes or sends messages on Reddit. Claude reads, and only while it's answering you; nothing runs on its own when a new post appears. For other ways to plug apps into AI, see our Integrations hub.
Five words before you install
Claude's vocabulary for this extension, in one minute.
- Connector
- The link you set up once so Claude can use an outside service while it answers. Here, the service is public Reddit.
- Tool
- One named job the connector lets Claude do, like opening a thread. Claude picks the ones it needs; the directory sheet lists them by name.
- Authorization
- The access you grant on a service's own screen. Granted once, per person, and taken back the same way.
- Approval
- The confirmation Claude waits for before it changes something in an account, shown in the chat at the moment it matters.
- MCP
- The shared standard connectors are built on: it's what lets an assistant like Claude talk to an outside service such as Reddit.
Install the Reddit Buddy connector in three steps
- 01
Find it in Claude Desktop
Open Claude Desktop settings, go through Customize then Connectors, and look for Reddit MCP Buddy. It's a desktop extension, installed on Claude Desktop. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, an Owner or Primary Owner turns it on first.
- 02
Start the install from its row
Hit Connect on its line and follow the prompts. The Disconnect button on the same line removes it later. The author says it works instantly in anonymous mode, with no API key.
- 03
Read any permission screen
Read any permission screen before you accept it: it belongs to the service, not to Claude, and it sets how far access goes. Whatever happens next, Claude works with the rights of the person who connected it and nothing more.
The 5 tools, grouped by what they do
Reddit MCP Buddy gives Claude 5 tools: 5 that read your account, 0 that change something in it.
One group only: the author marks all five as read-only, and each one fetches public Reddit content. Names stay exactly as Claude shows them.
- 5 read
What Claude reads (5)
5 toolsFive ways to pull posts, threads, user history and definitions from Reddit, none of which post anything.
browse_subreddit
Fetches posts from one subreddit, sorted hot, new, top, rising or controversial, with their content and metadata.
search_reddit
Runs a search for posts across all of Reddit or inside chosen subreddits, and returns the matches with their content. It's the way in when you don't know where a topic lives.
get_post_details
Opens a single post together with its comments, from a link or a post ID.
user_analysis
Looks at one account's posting history, karma and activity patterns, and returns its posts, comments and statistics.
reddit_explain
Explains a Reddit term, piece of slang or cultural habit, with its definition, origin, usage and examples. Handy when a thread reads like a foreign language.
What Claude asks you before acting
By default, Claude stops and asks before any action it takes on an account for you. No source describes a confirmation tied to any of these five tools, which the author marks as read-only.
On Team and Enterprise, workspace owners decide whether members may let some actions through without being asked every time. They can also cap what a connector may do for the whole organization, keeping reading and closing writing for instance, and nobody bypasses that from their own account. Claude works with the rights of whoever installed the extension, nothing more. In anonymous mode, the author says no API key is required.
Which plans it's available on
None of the 819 sheets in the official directory shows availability by plan. Connector by connector, that answer isn't published anywhere, which is a real gap in the catalog.
What is published is the general rule: desktop extensions like this one install on Claude Desktop, while remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner or Primary Owner first enables the connector for the organization. For this one's current status, its sheet in the official directory is the reference.
Where this connector stops
A connector isn't an automation. Claude calls these tools while it answers you, and nothing fires when a new post lands in a subreddit you follow.
The tool list is an observed floor, not a promise: an administrator can open actions no public sheet shows. The directory's verification badge isn't a security audit, and Anthropic notes on every sheet that it doesn't choose the tools a publisher exposes. This extension comes from an independent developer, and only his own package documents it; no Claude help article covers it. That developer is Karan Bansal, not Reddit itself.
