Overview

What changes when you need sources

Scite presents itself as answers grounded in peer-reviewed research you can verify, with citations that show how other researchers have supported, disputed or contextualized a study. Through the connector, Claude can search the scientific literature Scite covers and bring back citations from peer-reviewed papers, right in the conversation.

Search with precise queries. search_literature takes Boolean queries and phrase search, so a topic can be stated exactly as you mean it.

Narrow the search. Scite states 25+ filters, including author, journal, date range, citation counts and editorial notices, which you can mention in your question.

See how a finding was received. Scite's Smart Citations classify a citation as supporting, contrasting or mentioning, which shows whether later work backed a study or questioned it.

Trace a claim to its source. Results come back as citations from peer-reviewed papers that you can check, and Scite says its citation-based ranking model puts validated research first.

What it does not do: by default, the sheet only shows reading, with a single tool. Nothing watches a topic for you, and no alert goes out when a paper is contradicted. Each search happens because you asked for it. That kind of follow-up is a different trade, gathered on the Integrations hub.

The vocabulary in one minute

Five terms that come up on this page.

Connector
The link you set up once between Claude and your Scite account, so Claude can use it while answering you.
Tool
A named action the connector opens to Claude; here there is only one, which Claude calls when your question needs it.
Authorization
Scite's sign-in screen, where you grant Claude the access it will use. Given once, and it can be taken back.
Smart Citations
Scite's own classification: each citation of a paper is tagged as supporting, contrasting or simply mentioning it.
MCP
The shared standard behind connectors, which lets an assistant like Claude talk with an outside service.
Connect

Connect Scite to Claude in three steps

  1. 01

    Locate Scite

In Claude's settings, open Customize, then Connectors, and look for Scite. In a Team or Enterprise workspace, an Owner or Primary Owner enables the connector before members can connect.

  2. 02

    Sign in to Scite

Click Connect on its row, then sign in to the service in the window Scite opens itself. If that window does not appear, the connector may need to be enabled first in your workspace.

  3. 03

    Review the authorization

Read the authorization screen before accepting: it is Scite's, and it sets the scope of access. If the connector stops responding, Disconnect and plug it back in.

Approvals

What Claude asks before it acts

By default, Claude stops and asks for your go-ahead before every action it takes on an account for you.

Here, the single tool only searches. In a Team or Enterprise workspace, owners decide whether a member may let certain actions through without being asked again, and they can cap what the connector does for the whole organization; nobody works around that from their own account. Claude works with your rights: it sees nothing beyond what your Scite access allows, whatever you ask it to look for in the literature.

Plans

Which plans include it

None of the 819 sheets in the official directory shows plan availability. For Scite, that answer is not published anywhere.

The general rule is published: remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner or Primary Owner enables the connector before members can. Access to the Scite service itself depends on Scite, see below. For the current status on Claude's side, check the Scite sheet in the official directory.

Limits

Where Scite stops

A connector is not an automation: Claude calls the tool while answering you, and nothing fires when a paper gets contradicted.

The tool list is an observed floor, not a promise: an administrator can open actions no public sheet shows. The partner badge is not a security audit, and Anthropic says so on every sheet: it does not pick a publisher's tools and does not guarantee their behaviour. Only Scite documents this connector, in its manifest and pages; Claude's help center does not mention it. Other ways to link your tools are on Integrations.

Two official sources disagree

Do you need a Scite account to use the connector?

  • Scite MCP page ↗October 2026The setup page asks you to start a trial and create an account to use the service.
  • Scite's llms.txt file ↗October 2026The service can be tried for 10 requests with no account or credit card; continued use requires signing in.

What this page followsBoth texts come from Scite and do not say the same thing. Neither is dated older, so neither side is declared stale. On 1 October 2026, the server refused a call made without signing in. Plan on a Scite account, and check the directory sheet from your own Claude account.

FAQ

Claude Scite connector FAQ

01What can Claude do with the Claude Scite connector?
Claude can search the scientific literature Scite indexes and ground its answers in peer-reviewed papers, with citations you can verify. Its single tool accepts Boolean queries, exact phrases and 25+ filters, including author, journal, date range, citation counts and editorial notices. Scite adds its Smart Citations on top, which show whether a paper has been supported, contrasted or simply mentioned by later research. Every search starts from a question you put to Claude.
02Can Claude write or save anything in Scite?
By default, the directory sheet only shows reading: one tool, which searches the literature and returns papers. No source credits it with writing anything to your Scite account. That is not an absolute guarantee, since a public list is an observed floor and an administrator can open actions that appear on no sheet. What the sources describe is a search that takes Boolean queries, phrases and filters, and returns citations from peer-reviewed papers.
03Does Claude ask before searching Scite?
No source describes a confirmation specific to Scite's tool, so Claude's default rule applies. That rule has Claude stop and ask for your go-ahead before every action it takes on an account for you. In a Team or Enterprise workspace, owners decide whether a member may let certain actions through without a repeat prompt, and they can restrict the connector for the whole organization. No source changes that for this connector.
04Which plans is the Scite connector available on?
On Claude's side, no official source publishes plan availability connector by connector, and no directory sheet shows it. The general rule is that remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile, with an Owner enabling them first on Team and Enterprise. On Scite's side, continued use requires an account, and its own pages disagree about trying it without one. The directory sheet shows the current status for your account.
05Does Claude see my whole Scite account?
No, Claude works with your rights and within the limits of the listed tool. That tool searches the scientific literature; no source describes access to anything else in your Scite account. Whatever your own Scite access does not open stays closed to Claude too. At the organization level, a Team or Enterprise owner can also restrict the connector for every member of the workspace, and nobody lifts that setting from their own account.
06Why does the Scite connector refuse my search?
One documented cause is not being signed in to Scite. On 1 October 2026, Scite's server refused a call made without signing in, and Scite says continued use requires authentication. Its pages disagree about a trial without an account: the MCP page asks you to create one, while llms.txt mentions up to 10 requests without it. If the connector stops responding, Scite advises reconnecting it, advice it gives on its page for another assistant.
07Claude or an automation tool for Scite?
They do different jobs, so it comes down to use. Claude with this connector answers a research question when you ask it, building on peer-reviewed papers and their citations. An automation tool chains steps without you, off a trigger. Nothing in this connector starts on its own, and no alert goes out when a paper is contradicted, so anything meant to run unattended belongs to that other family of tools.
