Overview

What changes when you're stuck on code

Instead of opening a tab, pasting your error message and sorting through threads, you ask Claude. It queries Stack Overflow itself, pulls the questions and answers that matter, and brings them back into the conversation with their source attached, so you can judge each one before you use it.

Find the thread about your error. so_search runs a lexical search over the site's questions: the words in your request are the keys, and Claude spots the threads that match them.

Read the whole thread, not a snippet. Once the right question is found, get_content fetches the full content by its ID, including the question, its answers and the comments that push back on them.

Keep the source in view. The publisher says attribution to Stack Overflow always travels with the retrieved content, so you know where an answer came from before it lands in your codebase.

What the sheet leaves out: the third tool, answers, has no official description, and we won't guess its role from its name. The sheet shows no tool for posting a question or voting. The server is in beta, with a daily call cap. And nothing runs on its own: no watch kicks in when a new answer appears. That kind of monitoring is an automation tool's job, a different trade; the Integrations hub covers that side.

Vocabulary

The vocabulary in one minute

Five words worth knowing before you connect Stack Overflow.

Connector
The link you set up once between Claude and an account you already own, so Claude can use it while it is answering you.
Tool
One named action a connector opens to Claude; Claude picks it by itself mid-answer, and the directory sheet lists every tool by its name.
Authorization
The service's own sign-in screen, where you hand Claude the access it will use later on. Granted once per person, and it can be withdrawn.
Approval
The confirmation Claude waits for before it completes an action that changes your account, shown in the conversation at the right moment.
MCP
The common standard connectors are built on: it is the piece that lets an assistant like Claude exchange with a service outside it.
Connect

Connect Stack Overflow to Claude in three steps

  1. 01

    Find Stack Overflow in Claude

In Claude's settings, open Customize, then Connectors, and find Stack Overflow in the list. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, an Owner or Primary Owner enables the connector first, and only then can each member connect.

  2. 02

    Start the connection

Click Connect on its row, then sign in with your Stack Overflow account on the Stack Exchange login page the service opens itself. If the link breaks, use Disconnect and start over.

  3. 03

    Read the authorization screen

Read the authorization screen before you accept: it belongs to Stack Exchange, not Claude, and it sets what the access covers. The publisher also asks you to accept its terms and conditions at this point.

Tools

The 3 tools in the Claude Stack Overflow connector

Stack Overflow gives Claude 3 tools: 2 that read your account, 0 that change something in it, and 1 no official source describes.

Two groups: what Claude reads, and what no official source describes. Names stay exactly as Claude shows them.

  • 2 read
  • 1 not documented

What Claude reads (2)

2 tools

Two tools that consult the site's public content.

get_content

Fetches a full piece of site content by its ID: a question, its answers, the comments. The question comes back with everything attached to it, not just its title.

When it helps
search turned up a promising thread and you want its answers and comments, not only the title.

Undocumented (1)

1 tool

The directory publishes this name and nothing more. No official text says what it does or whether it reads or changes anything.

answers

No official source describes this tool: it shows up on the directory sheet, yet Stack Overflow's own documentation never mentions it. Nothing tells us what it does, we won't infer it from the name, and the general approval rule is what covers it.

Approvals

What Claude asks you before acting

By default, Claude stops and asks for your go-ahead before every action it takes on an account for you. Both documented tools only read.

On a Team or Enterprise workspace, owners decide whether a member may let some actions through without being asked again. They can also cap what a connector may do across the organisation, and that setting applies to everyone. Finally, Claude uses your own Stack Exchange access and nothing beyond it: whatever you can't reach on the site, Claude can't reach either, however the request is worded in the chat.

Plans

Which plans it's available on

Of the 819 sheets in the official directory, none states availability by plan. For Stack Overflow as for the rest, that answer isn't published anywhere.

The general rule is public: remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner or Primary Owner turns them on for the organisation before members connect. For the current state, check the connector's sheet in the official directory.

Limits

Where this connector stops

A connector isn't an automation: Claude calls these tools while it answers you, and nothing kicks off when a question gets a reply. Only the publisher documents this connector.

By default the sheet shows only reading, and that is an observed floor, not a guarantee: an administrator can open actions no public sheet lists. The partner badge isn't a security audit, and Anthropic says so on every sheet: it doesn't choose a publisher's tools or vouch for their behaviour. Connect only what comes from a publisher you know, here Stack Overflow itself. Other connectors are listed on the Claude integrations page.

FAQ

FAQ about the Claude Stack Overflow connector

01What can Claude do with the Stack Overflow connector?
Claude can search Stack Overflow questions and read a thread's full content, with its answers and comments. Two documented tools do the work: so_search for lexical search over questions, and get_content to fetch content by its ID. A third tool, answers, appears on the sheet with no official description. The publisher adds that attribution to Stack Overflow always comes with the retrieved content, which keeps the source visible in the chat.
02Can Claude post a question or an answer on Stack Overflow?
No source describes a write tool for this connector. The two documented tools search and read, and the third isn't described anywhere, so nothing can be claimed about it. Treat that as an observed floor rather than a guarantee: an administrator can open actions that don't show on any public sheet, and the publisher says more tools may be added in future phases of the beta, so the directory sheet remains the place to check the current list.
03Does Claude ask before using Stack Overflow?
By default, Claude asks for confirmation before every action it takes on an account on your behalf. No source describes a confirmation specific to the Stack Overflow tools, so that general rule applies to all three. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, owners decide whether members can let certain actions through without being asked, and they can also restrict this connector for the whole organisation. A member cannot reverse that setting on their own.
04Which plans is it available on?
No official source publishes plan availability for a specific connector, and no directory sheet displays it. The general rule is that remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile, with an Owner or Primary Owner enabling them first on Team and Enterprise. The connector's sheet in the official directory is still the only place that shows its current state for you, so check it before rolling the connector out.
05Does Claude see my whole Stack Overflow account?
Claude goes through the Stack Overflow account you connected and gets nothing beyond what that account can reach. The documented tools deal with site content, questions, answers and comments, and no source describes any access to your account settings or to your public profile. On the organisation side, an owner of a Team or Enterprise workspace can restrict the connector for everyone, and a member can't undo that alone from their side.
06How many requests can Claude send to Stack Overflow per day?
Stack Overflow caps access to its server at 100 calls per day per Stack Exchange user. For heavier needs, the publisher asks you to contact its sales team. The cap is tied to the Stack Exchange user, the same account you sign in with when you connect, after accepting the publisher's terms and conditions. The publisher also describes the server as a beta, so these terms are not presented as final, and its documentation page is where any change would show up.
07Claude or an automation tool for Stack Overflow?
They answer different needs, so it comes down to the task. Claude works inside a conversation: you ask, Claude searches the questions and reads the content it needs while it answers, then it stops. Nothing runs when a new answer appears. Work that should start on its own, from an event, belongs to an automation tool. A question asked in the moment belongs to the conversation, within the publisher's cap of 100 calls per day per user.
