Overview

What changes for a capture or bid team

Tango, published by MakeGov, packages US federal procurement data (awards, vehicles, bid protests, open opportunities on SAM.gov, agency forecasts) so an assistant can query it. With the connector plugged in, you ask Claude a question in plain English and it runs the searches itself, then reads the records back to you instead of making you click through filters.

Size up a competitor before a bid. You type a vendor name. resolve turns that string into the identifier Tango uses, and get_details pulls the full record, enriched with related data when Claude asks for it.

Build this week's pipeline list. search_opportunities filters open notices and agency forecasts by agency, NAICS code, set-aside type or response deadline, so a BD lead gets a shortlist without opening SAM.gov.

Scan who wins what. search covers 13 record types, filtered by vendor, agency or dates among other criteria, and can attach a quick statistical profile of the matches.

Now the part the directory sheet leaves out. That profile is computed on 250 records at most, so its total is a sample, never a market size. Tango's own docs announce a fifth tool that the directory sheet does not list. And nothing runs on its own: no tool fires when a new notice is posted. Watching for new bids in the background is a job for an automation tool, which is a different trade. The Integrations hub gathers that side of things.

Vocabulary

The vocabulary, in one minute

Five words you will run into while plugging Tango in.

Connector
The link you set up once between Claude and an account you already have, so Claude can work in it while it answers you.
Tool
One named thing a connector lets Claude do. Claude picks the ones it needs mid-answer, and the directory sheet lists them by name.
Authorization
The sign-in screen of the service itself, where you hand Claude the access it will use. Granted once per person, and revocable.
Approval
The confirmation Claude waits for before going ahead with something that changes an account, shown in the chat when it matters.
MCP
The shared standard connectors are built on: it is what lets an assistant like Claude talk to an outside service such as Tango.
Connect

Plug Tango into Claude in three steps

  1. 01

    Find Tango in Claude

In Claude's settings, open Customize, then Connectors, and look for Tango in the list. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, an Owner or Primary Owner has to switch the connector on before any member can sign in.

  2. 02

    Start the connection

Click Connect on its row, then sign in to Tango in the window Tango opens itself. If the link breaks later, hit Disconnect, then plug the connector back in from the same row.

  3. 03

    Read the authorization screen

Go through the authorization screen before you accept. It belongs to Tango, not to Claude, and it sets what the access covers. You can also pull that access back later from your account at tango.dev.

Tools

The 4 tools, sorted by what they do

Tango gives Claude 4 tools: 4 that read your account, 0 that change something in it.

All four consult data. Tool names stay exactly as Claude shows them, in English.

What Claude reads (4)

4 tools

Four tools that look up federal contracting records without changing anything.

resolve

Turns a loose string, like a company name, an agency or a NAICS code, into the matching Tango identifiers with a short preview of each. It is the entry point the other tools build on.

When it helps
a partner mentions "that Navy IT vehicle" on a call and you need the exact record before digging in.

search_opportunities

Looks through open opportunities and agency forecasts, narrowed by agency, NAICS, PSC, set-aside type, response deadline, notice type or keyword. You get a list to triage, not a single record.

When it helps
a small business wants every small-business set-aside in its NAICS code closing this month.

get_details

Fetches the full detail of one item, by ID and type, once a search or a resolve has surfaced it. An optional switch enriches the answer with related data.

When it helps
the bid manager wants the full record of one solicitation in front of them before a go or no-go meeting.
Watch out
one IT Dashboard field is reserved to a higher Tango tier.

Approvals

What Claude asks before it acts

By default, Claude stops and asks for your go-ahead before each action it takes on an account in your place. The request shows up in the conversation, right when it matters.

With Tango, the directory sheet only exposes reading, so that prompt rarely comes into play. The rest still counts. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, owners decide whether a member can let some actions through without being asked every time. They can also cap what a connector may do for the whole organization, keeping reads and closing writes for instance, and nobody overrides that from their own account. Finally, Claude works with your rights and nothing more: data your Tango account cannot reach stays out of reach.

Plans

Which plans it works on

Out of 819 sheets in the official directory, not one displays plan-by-plan availability. The answer, connector by connector, is published nowhere. That gap is real.

The general rule is published: remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner or Primary Owner switches the connector on for the organization before each member can connect. For the up-to-date state of this one, check Tango's own sheet in the official directory.

Limits

Where this connector stops

A connector is not an automation. Claude calls these tools while it answers you: nothing starts when a new notice goes live or a deadline gets close.

By default the sheet only exposes reading, and that is an observed floor, not a promise: an admin can open actions no public sheet shows. The partner badge is not a security audit either, and Anthropic says so on every sheet: it does not choose the tools a publisher exposes and does not vouch for how they behave. Everything on this page comes from MakeGov's own documentation, since neither Claude's help center nor Anthropic's developer docs cover Tango. For other sheets built the same way, see the Claude airtable connector.

FAQ

Claude Tango connector: frequent questions

01What can Claude do with the Tango connector?
Claude can search and read US federal contracting data from the chat. Its four tools turn a loose name into Tango identifiers, search 13 record types, list open opportunities and agency forecasts, and open the full detail of one record with optional related data. The search can also profile the matches statistically. Every one of those tools consults data; none of them is documented as changing anything in your Tango account.
02Can Claude write, send or delete anything in Tango?
Not through the tools the directory sheet lists: by default, all four only read. Tango's documentation describes lookups, searches and detail views, with no tool that creates or edits a record. That is an observed floor rather than a guarantee, because an admin can open actions that no public sheet shows. MakeGov also mentions a fifth tool that is missing from the sheet, so Claude may never be offered it.
03Does Claude ask before acting?
By default, yes: Claude asks for confirmation before each action it takes on an account in your place. No source describes a confirmation specific to any Tango tool, and since the four listed tools only read, that prompt rarely shows up here. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, owners decide whether members may let some actions through without being asked, and they can also shut writes for the entire organization.
04Which plans is the Tango connector available on?
No official source publishes availability plan by plan for each connector, and no directory sheet displays it. The general rule is simple. Remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile, while on Team and Enterprise an Owner or Primary Owner must first switch the connector on for the organization. Tango's sheet in the directory remains the only place that shows the current state for your account.
05Does Claude see everything in my Tango account?
No. Claude works with your rights and nothing more. Tango states that the assistant sees exactly the data your account and your Tango subscription already allow, so a colleague with a broader Tango access may get more back from the same question. You can also manage or revoke the connection from your account at tango.dev. On top of that, a Team or Enterprise owner can restrict what the connector may do across the organization.
06Can I use Tango's summary total as a market size?
No, and MakeGov warns against it explicitly. When the search adds a statistical profile, it computes it over 250 matching records at most, and a narrow filter does not lift that cap. The obligated total is therefore a sum over a sample, not the whole market. Tango's documentation calls it a capped sample of the matches, and a narrow filter is not a way around the cap. The breakdown also follows the awarding office, not the funding organization.
07Claude or an automation tool for Tango?
They do different jobs, so it depends on the task. Claude works inside a conversation: you ask, it searches the federal data and explains what it found, then nothing happens once you stop typing. It does not react on its own when a new notice is posted. For a watch that runs in the background, an automation tool is the right fit. For on-demand research on a bid or a competitor, the connector is the natural choice.
