Overview

What changes when Claude can draw in your Whimsical workspace

You describe a process, an outline or a screen in plain words, and Claude builds the matching Whimsical file for you: a flowchart, a mind map, a sequence diagram, a wireframe or a markdown doc. It can also dig through what already exists in your workspace, read a board or a doc, and then edit that file instead of starting from a blank canvas.

A first diagram without touching the canvas. Paste the steps of a process into the chat and Claude calls generate_diagram: Whimsical lays the flowchart, mind map or sequence diagram out on its own, in one step. For a free-form whiteboard where positions matter, Whimsical points to create with a board instead.

Build on past work. search finds boards, docs and folders by title or content, and can filter by creation or modification date. fetch then reads the shapes, sticky notes and text of a board, or the full text of a doc, so Claude can extend it with edit.

A screen sketched from a description. List the containers, buttons, inputs and icons you want, and generate_wireframe arranges them with an automatic flexbox layout (a grid that keeps elements aligned).

What it will not do: nothing runs on its own. Claude only calls these tools while it answers you, so no diagram updates itself when a file changes elsewhere. Whimsical also describes a few more tools for its server that the directory sheet does not list, and this page leaves them aside. If you want a recurring job to run without you, that is the job of an automation platform, and the Integrations hub lists them. The other Claude connectors are gathered on the Claude integrations page.

Vocabulary

Five words before you connect Whimsical

The Claude vocabulary used on this page, in one minute.

Connector
The link you set up once between Claude and your Whimsical account, so Claude can work in it while it answers you.
Tool
One named thing the connector lets Claude do, such as search or doc_create. Claude picks the ones it needs as it replies.
Authorization
The Whimsical sign-in screen where you hand Claude the access it will use. Granted once per person, and it can be taken back.
Approval
The confirmation Claude waits for before it changes something in your account, shown in the conversation when it matters.
MCP
The shared standard behind connectors: it is what lets an assistant like Claude talk to an outside service such as Whimsical.
Connect

Connect Whimsical to Claude in three steps

  1. 01

    Find Whimsical in your connectors

Open Claude's settings, go through Customize then Connectors, and look for Whimsical in the list. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, an Owner or Primary Owner has to switch the connector on before each member can sign in.

  2. 02

    Start the connection

Click Connect on its row, then sign in to Whimsical in the window Whimsical opens itself. If the link breaks later, use Disconnect and connect again; that is the documented fix.

  3. 03

    Read the authorization screen

Read the Whimsical authorization screen before you accept. It belongs to Whimsical, not Claude, and it sets what the access covers. You can also withdraw that access later from the Whimsical side.

Tools

The 11 Whimsical tools, by what they do

Whimsical gives Claude 11 tools: 5 that read your account, 6 that change something in it.

Two groups: what Claude reads in your workspace and what it creates or changes there. Whimsical describes all eleven. Names stay exactly as Claude shows them.

What Claude reads (5)

5 tools

Five tools that look things up in your workspace without changing a file.

fetch

Opens a board, doc or folder by its ID and returns its text: every shape, sticky note and diagram node for a board, the full text for a doc. It can also hand back a PNG snapshot of a board.

When it helps
you want a summary of what an existing flow shows before anyone touches it.

file_tree

Shows the folder tree of your workspace, so Claude sees how files are organized and which folder suits a new piece of content.

When it helps
before anything new gets created, you want to check where the project's files already sit.

Sourcewhimsical.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

list_workspaces

Returns every Whimsical workspace you belong to, with its name, its ID and your role there, member or guest. It is a lookup only: it reports which workspaces your account can reach.

When it helps
you are in several workspaces and need Claude to aim at the right one.

how_to

Fetches the Whimsical guides on syntax and formatting before content gets built. According to Whimsical, assistants usually call it on their own ahead of complex content.

When it helps
a detailed wireframe or sequence diagram is about to be drawn.

What Claude creates or changes (6)

6 tools

Six tools that add boards, diagrams and docs, or modify an existing one. No source describes a confirmation specific to them: the general rule below applies.

create

Approval: see the rule

Makes a new Whimsical file of the type you need: board, flowchart, mind map, sequence diagram, wireframe, sticky-note set or table. Diagrams lay themselves out, boards accept free placement, and Claude hands back a link to the file.

What Claude asks for
no source describes a step specific to this tool; see the approval rules below.
When it helps
you want a whiteboard where exact positions matter.

Sourcewhimsical.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

edit

Approval: see the rule

Adds, updates or removes objects on an existing board or doc, runs find-and-replace across a diagram and restructures mind maps or sequence diagrams. Whimsical states that mind map edits keep node styling, layout and comment threads.

What Claude asks for
nothing documented for this tool alone; the default rule applies.
When it helps
a status label has to change on every node of a flow.

Sourcewhimsical.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

generate_diagram

Approval: see the rule

Produces a flowchart, mind map or sequence diagram already laid out, in one call. For a sketch where absolute positions matter, Whimsical points to create with a board instead.

What Claude asks for
Whimsical describes no confirmation here, so the general approval section covers it.
When it helps
you paste a list of process steps and want a readable chart straight away.

Sourcewhimsical.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

generate_mind_map

Approval: see the rule

Turns an indented outline (a root topic with nested children) into a mind map. Branches spread left and right by default; asking for a vertical layout gives a top-down tree.

What Claude asks for
the sources stay silent on this point; rely on the default rule.
When it helps
you have a rough outline of a topic and want to see its branches at a glance.

Sourcewhimsical.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

generate_wireframe

Approval: see the rule

Builds a UI wireframe from a written description of the screen (containers, buttons, inputs, images, icons) and aligns it all with an automatic flexbox layout.

What Claude asks for
no tool-level confirmation is documented; the general section applies.
When it helps
a settings page or a login screen needs a first sketch to discuss.

Sourcewhimsical.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

doc_create

Approval: see the rule

Writes a new Whimsical document in markdown, with headings, lists, links, code blocks and tables. It is the tool for text-heavy content rather than visual files.

What Claude asks for
Whimsical does not describe one for docs; the approval rules below hold.
When it helps
notes from a discussion should live next to the related diagrams.

Approvals

What Claude asks before it changes your Whimsical files

By default, Claude stops and asks for your go-ahead before each action it takes on an account in your name. The request shows up in the conversation, at the moment it matters.

On Team and Enterprise workspaces, owners decide whether a member may let some actions through without being asked every time. They can also limit what a connector may do for the whole organization, for example keep reading open and close writing, and nobody gets around that from their own account. Claude also works with your rights and nothing more: a Whimsical file you cannot open yourself stays closed to it.

Plans

Which Claude plans include Whimsical

None of the 819 sheets in the official directory shows availability by plan. Connector by connector, that answer is published nowhere: it is a real gap in the catalogue.

What is published is the general rule: remote connectors are open to every user on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner or Primary Owner opens the connector for the organization before members connect. For the current state of this one, check its sheet in the official directory. Worth knowing: only Whimsical documents this connector, no Claude help page covers it.

Limits

Where the Whimsical connector stops

A connector is not an automation. Claude calls these tools while it answers you: nothing fires when a board changes or a new file lands in a folder.

The tool list is an observed floor, not a promise: an administrator can open actions that no public sheet shows. The verification badge in the directory is not a security audit either, and Anthropic says on every sheet that it does not choose the tools a publisher exposes or guarantee they behave as described. Connect only what comes from a publisher you trust, here Whimsical itself. And keep in mind that only Whimsical documents this connector: no Claude help article covers it.

FAQ

Questions about the Claude Whimsical connector

01What can Claude do with the Whimsical connector?
Claude can find, read and build Whimsical files from the conversation. Five tools read: search by title, content or date, read a board or doc, browse the folder tree, list your workspaces and fetch syntax guides. Six tools write: create a file of any type, edit a board or doc, generate a diagram, a mind map or a wireframe in one step, and create a markdown doc. Whimsical describes each of these eleven tools on its own help pages, so nothing in this list is guessed from a name.
02Can Claude change or delete my Whimsical boards?
Yes for changes, and the directory sheet lists no delete tool. The edit tool adds, updates or removes objects on an existing board or doc, runs find-and-replace across a diagram and restructures mind maps. Five other tools create new files: boards, diagrams, wireframes and docs. None of the eleven tools on the sheet read on October 1 deletes a whole file. When edit reworks a mind map, Whimsical says existing node styling, layout and comment threads are kept.
03Does Claude ask before it edits a Whimsical file?
By default, yes: Claude asks for confirmation before each action it takes on an account in your name. Whimsical does not describe any confirmation specific to create, edit or the generate tools, so that default rule is what applies. In an organization workspace, owners choose whether members may let some actions through without a new prompt, and they can also close writing for everyone while keeping search and reading open.
04Which Claude plans include the Whimsical connector?
No official source publishes plan availability connector by connector, and none of the 819 directory sheets shows it. The general rule: remote connectors are open to every user on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile, with an Owner or Primary Owner switching them on first for Team and Enterprise workspaces. Whimsical's own pages name no Claude plan for this connector. Only its sheet in the directory shows the current state for your account.
05Does Claude see every file in our Whimsical workspace?
No, Claude works with your rights and nothing more. What your Whimsical account cannot open, Claude cannot open either. The list_workspaces tool returns your role in each workspace, member or guest, which tells you how far your own access goes. In an organization workspace, owners can also narrow what the connector may do for everyone, and members cannot override that setting from their own accounts, whatever their role in a given workspace.
06Why does the Whimsical connector fail to authenticate?
The most likely cause documented by Whimsical is an older manual connection to its server. Whimsical warns that such a connection may prevent the official connector from authenticating, and asks you to disconnect it before connecting through the directory. Also check that you sign in with an existing Whimsical account: Whimsical states it is the only thing the connection needs. If the link breaks later, disconnect the connector in Claude and connect it again.
07Claude or an automation platform for Whimsical?
They answer different needs, so there is no winner. Claude with this connector suits on-demand work during a conversation: you ask for a flowchart, a wireframe or a doc and it builds it now, or finds and edits a file you name. An automation platform runs a scenario on its own when an event happens, without anyone asking. If you need a diagram or doc to be produced every time something occurs elsewhere, that recurring logic belongs to an automation tool, not to a connector.
