Overview

What the Anthropic (Claude) Zapier integration does

Claude is Anthropic's AI assistant. On Zapier, it sits in the middle of a Zap: something happens in another app, Claude receives text or a file, and the next steps use what it produced. It never starts a Zap by itself, because the app has no trigger on Zapier.

Three results people build. Drafted answers: Send Message hands Claude a message, gets the model's reply, and the next step puts that reply where you need it. Documents ready for Claude: Upload File sends a file, such as a PDF, into your Anthropic account. Tidy file storage: List Files and Get File Metadata look up what is already stored, so Download File or Delete File can act on the right one.

What Zapier does not do for this app. There is no trigger, so nothing in Anthropic can set a Zap off; a form, an inbox or a help desk has to start it. Every Zap therefore begins with another app's trigger, and its speed is that trigger's speed. Searches and a second action push you onto a paid plan. And a Zap never processes what arrived before it was switched on.

Vocabulary

Zapier vocabulary for this page

Eight words carry everything below. One plain line each.

Zap
The automation you build on Zapier: one trigger, then one or more actions that run each time the trigger event happens.
Trigger
The event in an app that starts the Zap. Claude has none on Zapier, so another app always plays that role.
Action
What the Zap does once started: here, asking Claude for a reply or moving a file in or out of Anthropic.
Task
The unit Zapier bills: one action completed successfully. The number on your plan counts those, nothing else.
Instant vs polling
An instant trigger is reported by its app straight away; a polling one is checked by Zapier on a timer that depends on your plan.
Filter
A step that lets the Zap go on only when what arrived meets your condition, so Claude is only called when it should be.
Search step
A step that looks up something already stored, such as a file in Anthropic, so later steps can use what it found.
Connection
Your Anthropic account linked to Zapier once, then reused by every Claude step of every Zap you build.
Cost

What a Claude Zap costs on Zapier

Anthropic (Claude) is not a premium app, so it works from the free plan. Zapier counts tasks, and actions are what create them.

  • Free plan100 tasks a month, unlimited Zaps, two-step Zaps only
  • Trigger from the other appNever costs a task
  • Each successful actionOne task
  • Filter, search or second actionPaid plan needed

The trigger from the other app never costs a task. Each action that goes through counts once, so a Zap that asks Claude for a draft uses one task per run. An action that fails is not counted. The free plan stops at two steps, one trigger and one action. Add a filter, a search or a second action and the Zap becomes multi-step, which needs a paid plan. How often the Zap runs depends on the first app's trigger: instant, or polled on the grid below.

Connect

Connect your Anthropic account

  1. 01

    Open the Apps page

In Zapier, go to Apps and click + Add connection. In the dialog, search for Anthropic (Claude) by name and pick it from the results to move on to the sign-in.

  2. 02

    Sign in to Anthropic

Click Add connection, then sign in, in the tab that opens, with the Anthropic account whose files and models your Zaps will use, not a test account nobody reads.

  3. 03

    Grant access

Allow Zapier to use the account. Every Claude step in every Zap then reuses this connection, so you do it once and select it later when you add a Claude step.

First Zap

Your first Zap: let Claude draft a reply on every new ticket

GoalEach new support ticket goes to Claude, and its first draft is added back to the ticket as an internal note for the agent to review.

  1. 01

    Build: start from another app

Start a Zap with Build. Claude has no trigger, so pick your help desk as the first app and its new-ticket event, then connect it.

  2. 02

    Test the trigger

Click Test and pick a real ticket among those that come back, so you can see which values are available for the next steps.

  3. 03

    Add Claude

Add Anthropic (Claude) with Send Message. Choose a Model, then put your instruction for the draft in User Message, followed by the ticket text from step 1.

  4. 04

    Send the draft back

Add your help desk again, pick the step that adds a note to a ticket, and map Claude's reply into it. Two actions make this a multi-step Zap, on a paid plan.

  5. 05

    Test and publish

Test each step once and read Claude's reply before going further. When it reads right, click Publish to switch the Zap on.

Actions

Anthropic (Claude) actions on Zapier

Anthropic (Claude) gives you 4 actions. For each one: what it does for you, when to reach for it, and what to watch out for.

1

Send Message

Action

In Zapier“Sends a message to Claude and the model generates the next message in the conversation, storing the messages as you go.”

Hands Claude your message and gets back the model's reply, keeping the exchange as it goes, so later steps can reuse the answer.

When to use it
a recruiter pastes each incoming application into Claude to get a short summary before reading the full CV.
Watch out
User Message and Model are required, and the message must stay under the token maximum of 199999.
2

Delete File

Action

In Zapier“Delete a file from Anthropic”

Removes one file from your Anthropic account, identified by its File ID.

When to use it
cleaning up a document once the work that needed it is done and logged elsewhere.
Watch out
point it at one exact File ID you checked, never at a guess, since the file you name is the one removed.
3

Download File

Action

In Zapier“Download file content from Anthropic”

Fetches the content of a file stored in Anthropic, so the next step can save or forward it.

When to use it
retrieving a stored document to attach it to a reply in another tool.
Watch out
it needs the File ID, which a search step such as List Files can supply earlier in the Zap.
4

Upload File

Action

In Zapier“Upload a file to Anthropic”

Sends a file from an earlier step, a PDF document for example, into your Anthropic account so it is stored there.

When to use it
contracts dropped in a shared folder are pushed to Anthropic as they arrive, ready for later steps.
Watch out
the File field is required, so the step before must carry an actual file, not just its name.
Searches

Anthropic (Claude) searches on Zapier

2 search steps look for data that already exists in Anthropic (Claude), so a later step can use it.

A search step looks up something that already exists so later steps can use it. In the editor, the searches sit at the bottom of the action event list, under their own SEARCH heading. Three settings decide what happens when a search does not find exactly one result.

1

Get File Metadata

Search

In Zapier“Get metadata for a specific file”

Looks up the details Anthropic keeps about one stored file, so the next steps know what they are dealing with before acting.

When to use it
checking a file before a Download File or Delete File step runs on it.
Watch out
the File ID is required, so this search confirms a file you already know rather than finding one.
2

List Files

Search

In Zapier“List all files uploaded to Anthropic”

Returns the files uploaded to your Anthropic account, which is how a Zap gets a File ID no earlier step carried.

When to use it
a tidy-up Zap that needs to see what is stored before choosing what to download.
Watch out
with several files, the setting for multiple results decides whether you keep the first or pass them all on.

The three settings every search exposes

  1. Successful if no search results are found?
Left on its default, a search that finds nothing stops the Zap there and the steps that depend on it are skipped. Switched on, the Zap carries on empty-handed.
  2. Create X if it doesn't exist yet?
This box turns a search into a find-or-create. This app offers no find-or-create variant, so you will not meet it on these two searches.
  3. If multiple search results are found?
Three ways out when several items match: keep the first one, which is the default, stop the Zap, or pass all of them on at once.
When it breaks

When a Claude Zap breaks

Zapier links one getting-started article to this app and lists no app-specific limit beyond the token maximum. The cases below come from the required fields and from Zapier's general behavior.

Trouble here comes from missing inputs, from the free plan's shape, and from timing. Six cases to check before publishing.

  • Message too long

User Message must stay under the token maximum of 199999. A whole document pasted into it, plus your instruction, can go over and the action fails.
  • Missing Model or message

Send Message requires both a Model and a User Message. If the earlier step left the mapped field empty, there is nothing to send.
  • No File ID to work with

Download File, Delete File and Get File Metadata all require a File ID. Without a search like List Files before them, the Zap has none to give.
  • Free plan too small

The free plan builds two-step Zaps. A filter, a search or a second action make the Zap multi-step, and that needs a paid plan.
  • Nothing before the Zap

A Zap only reacts to what happens after it is switched on. Tickets, forms or files from before never reach Claude through it.
  • A flood held back

If the first app's trigger suddenly returns a huge batch, after an import for instance, Zapier's flood protection can hold it back.

FAQ

Anthropic (Claude) and Zapier: common questions

01Is the Anthropic (Claude) Zapier integration free?
Yes on the Zapier side: Anthropic (Claude) is not a premium app, so it works on the free plan, which gives 100 tasks a month and unlimited Zaps. The limit is the shape of the Zap. On the free plan, a Zap has two steps, one trigger from another app and one Claude action. A filter, a search or a second action make it multi-step, and that needs a paid plan.
02How many tasks does a Claude Zap use?
One task for each action that succeeds, and nothing for the trigger. A Zap that sends each new ticket to Claude for a draft uses one task per ticket. If it then writes the draft back to the ticket, that is two actions and two tasks per run. An action that fails is not counted against your plan. To estimate a month, multiply the items you expect from the first app by the number of actions in the Zap.
03Does Claude on Zapier work in real time?
It depends on the app that starts the Zap, because Anthropic (Claude) has no trigger of its own. If that first app has an instant trigger, it tells Zapier straight away and Claude is called at once. If it has a polling trigger, Zapier checks it on a timer: every 15 minutes on the free plan, 2 minutes on Professional, 1 minute on Team and Enterprise. Pick the first app with that in mind.
04What does it take to connect Claude to Zapier?
An Anthropic account, plus access to anything you want the Zap to touch that you do not own. You connect from the Apps page of Zapier with + Add connection, sign in to Anthropic in the tab that opens, and grant access. You also need another app to start each Zap, since Claude has no trigger, and that app needs its own connection on Zapier as well. Set up both before building.
05Why does the Send Message step fail?
Usually because a required input is missing or too large. Send Message needs both a Model and a User Message, so check that the field you mapped from the earlier step is not empty. The User Message must also stay under the token maximum of 199999, which a long document plus instructions can exceed. Test the step in the editor and read what came back to see which case you hit.
06What if the Claude operation you need is not available?
Then the built-in steps cannot do it. On Zapier, Anthropic (Claude) offers four actions and two searches: sending a message, and uploading, downloading, deleting, listing or describing files. There is no trigger at all. Check whether the job can be split into those steps, with another app starting the Zap, and compare what other automation tools expose for Anthropic before building around the gap. Sometimes a different first app gets you to the same result.
07Zapier, Make or n8n for Anthropic (Claude)?
It depends on your criteria, not on a winner. Zapier is quick when a trigger from another app plus one Claude action covers the job, and the free plan allows that. If your team already runs Make or n8n, the test is the same there: check that the Anthropic operations it offers cover the messages and files you need before moving anything, and keep the tool already in place when both do the job.
