Overview

What the Bitly Zapier integration actually does for you

The Bitly Zapier integration links your Bitly account to the other tools you use, so short links, QR codes and click sources move on their own. Bitly is the link shortener and link management platform; Zapier is the service that watches for an event in one app and then does something in another, with no code.

Three results people build first. A QR code for every new short link: New Bitlink starts the Zap and Create QR Code saves a matching code in your account. A short link made from somewhere else: a new row, a new post or a new product elsewhere hands its long URL to Create Bitlink, and the short version comes back to the next step. A log of who sends you traffic: New Referring Domain or New Referring URL fires when a new source shows up in a link's click history, so marketing sees it without opening the dashboard.

What Zapier does not do here matters just as much. There is no trigger on each single click, only on new sources of clicks. There is no action to edit or delete a Bitlink, and nothing to add a link to a campaign. And New Campaign only works for Bitly Enterprise accounts. If one of those gaps blocks you, compare with the Bitly n8n integration and the Bitly Make integration, which cover the same app with different building blocks.

Vocabulary

Zapier vocabulary in one minute

Seven words come back on every line of this page. Here they are once, in ordinary English.

Zap
The automation you build on Zapier: one starting event, then one or more steps that run each time that event happens.
Trigger
The event in Bitly that starts the Zap, such as a new Bitlink. Once the Zap is on, Zapier waits for it.
Action
What the Zap does once it has started: the step that creates, sends or saves something for you, like a QR code.
Task
The unit Zapier bills. One task is one action the Zap carried out successfully; your plan counts those.
Polling vs instant
A polling trigger is checked on a timer for new items. An instant one is pushed by the app the moment it happens. All Bitly triggers poll.
Filter
A step that lets the Zap continue only when what arrived meets your condition, and quietly stops it otherwise.
Search step
A step that looks up something already in an app, here an existing Bitlink, so later steps can reuse what it found.
Cost

What a Bitly Zap really costs

Bitly is not a premium app on Zapier, so it works on the free plan. The bill is counted in tasks, and the rules are kinder than most people expect.

  • Premium appNo, works on the free plan
  • Free plan100 tasks a month, two-step Zaps
  • Trigger checksNever billed
  • Failed actionNot billed

The trigger never costs a task, and neither does checking for new Bitlinks, however often Zapier looks. You pay one task each time an action works, and an action that fails is not counted. In a Zap with several actions, each successful one counts on its own. The free plan gives 100 tasks a month and Zaps of two steps only: one trigger, one action. Add a filter, a search or a second action and it becomes a multi-step Zap, which needs a paid plan.

Connect

Connect your Bitly account to Zapier

  1. 01

    Open your connections

In Zapier, go to the Apps page of your account and click + Add connection. A connection is your Bitly account linked once, then reused by every step that talks to Bitly.

  2. 02

    Pick Bitly

Type Bitly in the search box of the dialog, select it, then click Add connection. A new tab opens on Bitly's own sign-in page, not on a Zapier form, and you sign in there.

  3. 03

    Sign in and allow access

Log in with the Bitly account that owns the links you want to automate, then grant Zapier access. Close the tab and the connection shows up in your list, ready for any Zap.

First Zap

Build your first Bitly Zap

GoalEvery new Bitlink that meets your condition gets a QR code saved in Bitly.

  1. 01

    Create the Zap

Start a new Zap in the editor. Search Bitly in the first card and choose New Bitlink as the trigger, then pick your Bitly connection.

  2. 02

    Test the trigger

Run the test. Zapier brings back the three most recent Bitlinks of the account, so you map the next steps on a real link instead of a made-up one.

  3. 03

    Add a filter

Click the plus icon, choose Filter, then set the field, the rule and the value of your condition. Links that do not match stop here.

  4. 04

    Add the QR code action

Add a Bitly step with Create QR Code. In the required Destination field, map the link that came with the trigger. Test the step and check the code in Bitly.

  5. 05

    Publish

Click Publish to switch the Zap on. Because of the filter, this is a multi-step Zap: it needs a paid plan. Without the filter, it runs on the free one.

Triggers

Bitly triggers on Zapier

4 events start a Zap when something happens in Bitly. Zapier checks for them at the interval your plan allows.

1

New Campaign

Polling trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when a new campaign is created in your Bitly account (This trigger is only available for Bitly Enterprise users).”

Starts your Zap when someone sets up a fresh campaign in the Bitly account, which is handy to open a matching tracking sheet or warn the team that a launch is being prepared.

How it fires
Zapier goes and looks at regular intervals, and how often depends on your plan: every 15 minutes on the free one.
When to use it
a marketing team that groups its links by campaign and wants each new one announced in its usual channel.
Watch out
Bitly only offers this trigger to Bitly Enterprise users, so it is of no use on any other Bitly plan.
3

New Referring URL

Polling trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when a new referring URL appears in your link's click history.”

Watches the click history of one Bitlink and reacts when a page you have never seen before sends visitors to it.

How it fires
Zapier goes and looks at regular intervals, and how often depends on your plan: every 15 minutes on the free one.
When to use it
spotting the exact article or forum thread that picked up a link you shared.
Watch out
the Link field is required, so the Zap follows a single Bitlink; each link you want to watch needs its own Zap.
4

New Referring Domain

Polling trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when a new referring domain appears in your link's click history.”

Same idea one level up: instead of the exact page, it reports a new website that starts sending clicks to your link.

How it fires
Zapier goes and looks at regular intervals, and how often depends on your plan: every 15 minutes on the free one.
When to use it
a weekly view of which sites send traffic, without one line per article.
Watch out
it also asks for one Link and only follows that Bitlink, never your whole account.
Actions

Bitly actions on Zapier

Bitly gives you 2 actions. For each one: what it does for you, when to reach for it, and what to watch out for.

1

Create QR Code

Action

In Zapier“Creates a QR Code that is saved to your Bitly account”

Generates a QR code in your Bitly account that sends people to the destination you map.

When to use it
printed material, packaging or event badges where every new link also needs something to scan.
Watch out
Destination is the only required field; leave it empty and the step fails, which costs no task but stops the Zap.
2

Create Bitlink

Action

In Zapier“Saves a Bitlink to your user history in Bitly. Returns a shortened URL.”

Takes a full URL from an earlier step and turns it into a short Bitlink saved in your Bitly history. The short address comes back, ready for an email, a post or a row.

When to use it
a new product page, event or article elsewhere should get a short link without anyone copying it by hand.
Watch out
the URL field is required, so map a complete address, not a page title.
Searches

The Bitly search on Zapier

1 search step looks for data that already exists in Bitly, so a later step can use it.

A search step does not create anything. It finds a Bitlink that already exists, so a later step can reuse it. In the editor it sits at the bottom of the action list, under SEARCH, and it turns your Zap into a multi-step one.

The three settings every search exposes

  1. Successful if no search results are found?
Left on its default, a search that finds nothing stops the Zap there. Switch it on and the Zap carries on with an empty result.
  2. Create Bitlink if it doesn't exist yet?
Ticking it turns the search into a find-or-create: the setting above disappears and Zapier asks for what it needs to create the missing link.
  3. If multiple search results are found?
Three exits: keep the first match, which is the default, stop the Zap, or pass every match on at once.
When it breaks

When a Bitly Zap breaks

Zapier does not attach any Bitly help article listing app-specific errors. What breaks is the same as on every Zap, with a Bitly flavour.

Most failures come from how Zapier watches Bitly, not from Bitly itself. Read these four cases before you publish, and keep the Zapier troubleshooting guide nearby for the rest.

  • Old links are never picked up

A Zap only reacts to what happens after you switch it on. Bitlinks created last month stay out of reach; moving that backlog is a separate job.
  • A Zap that keeps restarting itself

New Bitlink as the trigger and Create Bitlink as the action: each link created wakes the Zap again, and your task count drains fast.
  • A bulk import that seems ignored

Create a large batch of links at once and Zapier's flood protection can hold the trigger back instead of firing for each one.
  • The same link never runs twice

Zapier remembers what a polling trigger already saw, so a Bitlink it has picked up once never starts the Zap a second time. No need to dedupe by hand.

FAQ

Bitly Zapier integration: frequent questions

01Is the Bitly Zapier integration free?
Yes, as long as your Zap stays on two steps. Bitly is not a premium app on Zapier, so the free plan can use it: one trigger, one action, up to 100 tasks a month, with new items checked every 15 minutes. The moment you add a filter, a search such as Find Bitlink or a second action, the Zap becomes multi-step and Zapier asks for a paid plan. Your Bitly plan matters too: the New Campaign trigger only works for Bitly Enterprise users, whatever you pay Zapier.
02How many Zapier tasks does a Bitly Zap use?
One task per action that succeeds, nothing for the rest. The New Bitlink trigger and every check Zapier makes on your account are free. A Zap that creates a QR code for each new link costs one task per link. If you chain Create Bitlink and Create QR Code in the same Zap, that is two tasks per run, because each successful action counts on its own. An action that fails, for example because the destination field is empty, is not billed, but the run stops there.
03Do Bitly triggers on Zapier work in real time?
No. All four Bitly triggers are polling triggers: Zapier goes to check your Bitly account at a fixed interval rather than being told straight away. On the free plan that interval is 15 minutes, on Professional it is 2 minutes, and on Team and Enterprise it is 1 minute. Bitly offers no instant trigger on Zapier, so a new Bitlink can wait up to one full interval before the Zap moves. On a paid plan you can also run a check by hand from the editor.
04What does it take to connect Bitly to Zapier?
A Bitly account and a Zapier account, nothing else. You add the connection from the Apps page, sign in on Bitly's own page in a new tab, then allow Zapier to access the account. Choose the login carefully: the Find Bitlink search only returns links created by the user you connected, so a shared login can hide your colleagues' links. If you want to use the New Campaign trigger, the account must also be on Bitly Enterprise.
05Why does a Bitly Zap keep creating links in a loop?
Because the action writes where the trigger is looking. A Zap that starts on New Bitlink and then runs Create Bitlink makes a new link, which Zapier spots on its next check as a new Bitlink, which starts the Zap again. Each turn costs a task, so the monthly count disappears quickly. Break the loop by starting from another app rather than New Bitlink, so the link the Zap creates is not something its own trigger watches.
06What if the Bitly action you need does not exist on Zapier?
Then the editor simply does not offer it. On Zapier, Bitly covers creating Bitlinks and QR codes, finding an existing Bitlink, and watching new links, campaigns and referrers. There is nothing to edit, archive or delete a link, and no step to attach a link to a campaign. In that case, look at the same app on another automation tool, or keep that part manual and automate only the steps the integration does offer.
07Zapier, Make or n8n for Bitly?
It depends on your criteria, not on a winner. On Zapier, the Bitly connection takes a sign-in and the free plan covers two-step Zaps. Make and n8n each have their own Bitly page with their own list of operations, which matters if you need one Zapier lacks. Check each tool's Bitly operations against the job before choosing. Then weigh the cost at your volume of links, keeping in mind that a filter or a search makes a Zapier Zap multi-step.
