Overview

What the Bluesky Zapier integration actually does

Bluesky is a text-based social network. Linked to Zapier, new posts from an author, a feed, your timeline or a search can start an automation, a new follower can too, and other steps can post, like or repost from your account without you opening the app.

Three results worth building. A relay for your team's voices: New Posts by Author watches a colleague's handle, and Repost Post boosts each new post from the company account. A listening post: New Post (with Search Options) catches posts that match your search, and Like Post acknowledges them. A publishing outlet: Create Post puts out a post written in another tool, or a reply to an existing one.

The three searches fill the gaps. Find Post and Find User look up what already exists, and Find Thread brings back a whole conversation around a post.

Two things decide whether Bluesky fits your budget. It is a premium app, reserved to paid plans and the free trial. And its triggers are polling, so the delay before a Zap starts depends on your plan: 2 minutes on Professional, 1 on Team and Enterprise.

What Zapier does not do here. There is no action to delete a post, follow an account or send a direct message. Like and repost need two identifiers found in the post data an earlier step returns, not the web link you copy from the browser. To compare platforms, see the Bluesky Make integration page and the n8n vs Zapier comparison.

Vocabulary

Zapier vocabulary in one minute

Eight terms cover this page. Each one gets a plain line here, then the page uses it as is.

Zap
The automation you build in Zapier: one trigger, then one or more actions that run every time the trigger event happens.
Trigger
The event in an app that starts the Zap, such as a new post. Once the Zap is on, Zapier waits for it.
Action
What the Zap does once started: the step that posts, likes or reposts something on your behalf.
Task
The unit Zapier bills. One task is one action your Zap completes successfully, and your plan counts those.
Polling trigger
A trigger Zapier checks on a timer: it asks the app for new items at a fixed interval and keeps only the ones it has not seen.
Filter
A step that lets the Zap go on only when what arrived meets your condition, and stops it otherwise.
Search step
A step that looks up something that already exists in an app, so the steps after it can use what it found.
Premium app
An app Zapier reserves for paid plans and free trials. Bluesky is one, so the free plan cannot use it.
Cost

What a Bluesky Zap really costs

Bluesky is a premium app on Zapier: the free plan cannot run it, only a paid plan or the free trial. Below that, the bill is in tasks.

  • Premium appYes, paid plans and free trial only
  • Bluesky triggers5 polling, 0 instant
  • What countsEach successful action, never the trigger
  • Searches3, they make the Zap multi-step

The trigger costs nothing, and neither do Zapier's regular checks for new posts. Each action that succeeds counts once: a Zap that likes and reposts uses two tasks per post. A failed action is not counted. A filter or a search makes the Zap multi-step, which is fine since Bluesky already requires a paid plan. The interval grid matters here, because all five triggers are polling: the free plan's 15 minutes never applies, since that plan cannot use Bluesky.

Connect

Connect your Bluesky account to Zapier

  1. 01

    Open the Apps page

In your Zapier account, go to Apps and click + Add connection. A connection is your Bluesky account linked once, then reused by every step that posts, likes or searches.

  2. 02

    Choose Bluesky

Search for Bluesky in the dialog, select it, then click Add connection. Zapier opens a new tab where you sign in to Bluesky, so keep the account's login details ready.

  3. 03

    Sign in and grant access

Log in to the Bluesky account the Zap should act as, then allow Zapier to use it. You need a Bluesky account, plus a Zapier paid plan or trial, since Bluesky is a premium app.

First Zap

Your first Zap: boost every post from your founder

GoalA startup wants each post its founder publishes on Bluesky reposted by the company account, but only the posts that meet a condition the team sets.

  1. 01

    Set the trigger

In the editor, choose Bluesky and New Posts by Author. Enter the founder's handle without the @. This trigger is polling: Zapier checks at your plan's interval.

  2. 02

    Test the trigger

Run the test. Zapier brings back the three most recent posts of that author, so you map the next steps on a real post rather than an empty sample.

  3. 03

    Add a filter

Add a Filter from the plus icon: the field to check, the rule and the value. Pick a text rule for text and a number rule for numbers, or the filter never passes.

  4. 04

    Add the repost

Add Repost Post with the company connection. Map the post's at:// URI and CID from the trigger's post data; the web link from the browser will not work here.

  5. 05

    Test, then publish

Test the action once and check the company account on Bluesky. When it looks right, click Publish. Posts made before that moment stay out.

Triggers

Bluesky triggers in Zapier

5 events start a Zap when something happens in Bluesky. Zapier checks for them at the interval your plan allows.

1

New Posts by Author

Polling trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when an author creates new posts.”

Starts your Zap when a given account publishes a new post. You watch one author per Zap, which suits following a spokesperson, a partner or a competitor closely.

How it fires
Zapier goes and looks at regular intervals, and how often depends on your paid plan: every 2 minutes on Professional, every minute on Team and Enterprise
When to use it
a company account that reposts each new post from its founder.
Watch out
type the handle without the leading @, as in example.bsky.social, or the trigger finds nothing.
2

New Feed Posts

Polling trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when new posts appear in a selected feed.”

Fires when new posts appear in a feed you select. You pick the feed in a required field, so this trigger follows a feed rather than a single person.

How it fires
Zapier goes and looks at regular intervals, and how often depends on your paid plan: every 2 minutes on Professional, every minute on Team and Enterprise
When to use it
a developer-relations team that likes what shows up in a feed about its open-source project.
Watch out
reposts are included only if you switch that option on; leave it off to get original posts only.
3

New Follower on Account

Polling trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when someone new follows the specified account.”

Runs when someone new follows the account you name. It can be your own account or another one you want to keep an eye on.

How it fires
Zapier goes and looks at regular intervals, and how often depends on your paid plan: every 2 minutes on Professional, every minute on Team and Enterprise
When to use it
a newsletter author who logs each new follower as a potential subscriber.
Watch out
the account field takes a handle or a DID and is required; it lets you watch any account, not only your own.
4

New Post (with Search Options)

Polling trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when new posts match your search criteria.”

Watches Bluesky for new posts that match your search criteria. It is the listening trigger: brand mentions, a product name, a topic your audience talks about.

How it fires
Zapier goes and looks at regular intervals, and how often depends on your paid plan: every 2 minutes on Professional, every minute on Team and Enterprise
When to use it
a SaaS support team that wants every public mention of its product in front of an agent.
Watch out
Zapier remembers what it has already seen, so a matching post starts the Zap once, not at every check.
5

New Timeline Posts

Polling trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when new posts appear in your "Following" feed (chronological posts from users you follow).”

Picks up new posts that land in your Following feed, the chronological posts of the accounts you follow. It covers your whole circle in one trigger.

How it fires
Zapier goes and looks at regular intervals, and how often depends on your paid plan: every 2 minutes on Professional, every minute on Team and Enterprise
When to use it
an analyst who archives everything the accounts they follow publish, to read later.
Watch out
a busy timeline produces many runs; switch reposts off and add a filter before any action.
Actions

Bluesky actions in Zapier

Bluesky gives you 3 actions. For each one: what it does for you, when to reach for it, and what to watch out for.

1

Like Post

Action

In Zapier“Likes a post on Bluesky.”

Likes a post from your account. You identify the post with its at:// URI and its CID, both found in the post data an earlier Bluesky step returned.

When to use it
acknowledging every post that mentions your product.
Watch out
the at:// URI is not the web link of the post; pasting the browser address fails.
2

Create Post

Action

In Zapier“Creates a new post on Bluesky.”

Publishes a new post from the connected account with the text you map in. An option turns it into a reply to another post instead of a standalone one.

When to use it
sharing a release note the moment it is written in your product tool.
Watch out
the Text field is required, so map it from a step that always carries some text.
3

Repost Post

Action

In Zapier“Reposts (boosts) a post on Bluesky.”

Reposts, or boosts, a post to your followers. Like the like action, it needs the at:// URI and the CID of the post, mapped from an earlier Bluesky step.

When to use it
giving the company account's audience what your team members publish.
Watch out
if the trigger watches the very account this action writes to, what the Zap puts there can come back as a new item and start it again.
Searches

Bluesky searches in Zapier

3 search steps look for data that already exists in Bluesky, so a later step can use it.

A search step looks up what already exists on Bluesky and hands it to the next steps. Searches sit at the bottom of the action event list, under their own heading. Three settings decide what happens when the result is not a clean single match.

1

Find Post

Search

In Zapier“Search for posts on Bluesky.”

Searches Bluesky for posts and hands the match to the following steps. Useful when the trigger came from another context and you need a post's identifiers to like or repost it.

When to use it
finding the post that announced a launch so a later step can repost it.
Watch out
several posts can match, so check the multiple-results setting.
2

Find Thread

Search

In Zapier“Get a full thread of posts including up to 100 parent posts and 100 replies.”

Brings back a whole thread around a post: up to 100 parent posts and 100 replies. You start from the post's at:// URI, mapped from an earlier step.

When to use it
saving the full discussion under a post that mentioned your brand, not just the mention.
Watch out
the at:// URI is required and the web link will not do.
3

Find User

Search

In Zapier“Search for users on Bluesky.”

Looks up a Bluesky account by username or display name. For an exact match, search with the full handle, such as user.bsky.social.

When to use it
turning a speaker's display name into a full handle before a later step uses it.
Watch out
a display name can match several people; the full handle avoids that.

The three settings every search exposes

  1. Successful if no search results are found?
Left on its default, a search that finds nothing stops the Zap there, and the steps that depended on it are skipped. Switched on, the Zap carries on empty-handed.
  2. Create X if it doesn't exist yet?
This box turns a search into a find-or-create. No Bluesky search offers it, so a missing post or user is never created for you.
  3. If multiple search results are found?
Three ways out when several items match: keep the first one, which is the default, stop the Zap, or pass all of them on at once.
When it breaks

Where a Bluesky Zap breaks

Zapier links one help article to Bluesky, a getting-started guide, and documents no rate limit specific to the app. The cases below come from the required fields and from how Zaps work.

Six cases to know before you publish. The identifier one trips up nearly everyone who maps a post by hand. For the rest, the Zapier troubleshooting guide takes over.

  • The web link instead of the at:// URI

Like Post, Repost Post and Find Thread need the post's at:// URI, plus a CID for the first two. The address from the browser is not that, and the step fails.
  • A handle typed with the @

New Posts by Author wants the handle without the leading @. Bluesky's own field help says to leave it out, so strip it from any mapped value.
  • The Zap restarts on its own posts

New Posts by Author on your own handle, followed by Create Post on that same account, sees each post the Zap writes as new and starts again, burning tasks.
  • The free plan cannot run it

Bluesky is a premium app. On the free plan, outside the trial, the Zap cannot use it at all, whatever its number of steps.
  • Old posts are not picked up

A Zap only reacts to what happens after you publish it. Posts from before stay out; moving that history is a separate job.
  • A burst of posts at once

A search or a feed that suddenly returns a huge batch can be held back by Zapier's flood protection rather than run post by post.

FAQ

Bluesky and Zapier: common questions

01Is the Bluesky Zapier integration free?
No. Bluesky is a premium app on Zapier, reserved to paid plans and the free trial, so the free plan cannot use it at all. Once you are on a paid plan, multi-step Zaps with filters and searches are available too, which matters for Bluesky when a like or a repost needs Find Post to fetch the post's identifiers. The app page on Zapier states whether an app is premium, so you can check it in one click.
02How many tasks does a Bluesky Zap use?
One task per action that succeeds, on every run. The trigger is free, and so are Zapier's regular checks for new posts. A Zap that likes a post uses one task; one that likes and reposts uses two. A failed action is not counted. Watch the timeline trigger: a busy Following feed starts the Zap often, so a filter placed right after the trigger keeps unwanted posts from reaching the actions.
03Is Bluesky on Zapier real time?
No. All five Bluesky triggers are polling: Zapier asks Bluesky for new items at a fixed interval and keeps only what it has not seen. That interval depends on your paid plan: every 2 minutes on Professional, every minute on Team and Enterprise. On paid plans, you can also run a check by hand from the editor. The 15-minute free-plan interval does not come into play, since the free plan cannot use Bluesky.
04What do you need to connect Bluesky to Zapier?
A Bluesky account and a Zapier paid plan or trial, since Bluesky is a premium app. In Zapier, open Apps, click + Add connection, search for Bluesky, click Add connection, sign in to Bluesky in the new tab and grant access. Then, in your triggers, type handles without the leading @, such as example.bsky.social, and keep in mind that the follower trigger also accepts a DID. The connection is then reused by every Bluesky step you add later.
05Why does Like Post fail with a link copied from Bluesky?
Because Like Post and Repost Post do not take the web link of a post. They need its at:// URI and its CID, two identifiers found in the post data that a Bluesky trigger or search returns. Map both from an earlier step, such as New Posts by Author or Find Post. If your Zap starts from another app, add Find Post first to get those identifiers before the like or the repost.
06What if the Bluesky operation you need is missing?
Zapier exposes 5 triggers, 3 actions and 3 searches for Bluesky: no action to delete a post, follow an account or send a message. If your flow needs one of these, check whether a search plus an existing action gets close, such as Find Thread to gather replies before Create Post answers one. Otherwise, compare what other automation platforms expose for Bluesky, since each one maintains its own list of operations.
07Zapier, Make or n8n for Bluesky?
It depends on your criteria, not on a winner. On Zapier, Bluesky is a premium app with five polling triggers, three actions and three searches, so the cost and the delay depend on your paid plan. Make has its own Bluesky page with its own operations, worth checking for your use. Compare first whether the operation you need exists on each platform, then how each one bills a run, and which tool your team already uses.
