CoinGecko Zapier integrationAutomate CoinGecko with Zapier.

The CoinGecko Zapier integration gives you 0 triggers, 5 actions and 1 search. It reads crypto market data, it never starts a Zap by itself: another app kicks things off, then CoinGecko fetches prices, coin details or trends. Here is what each step does and costs.

Overview

What the CoinGecko Zapier integration actually does

It lets a Zap ask CoinGecko for market data at the moment it runs: the price of a coin in the currencies you pick, the full profile of a coin, what is trending, or a ranking by market capitalization. The answer then flows into the next step, a sheet, a message or a report, without anyone opening a browser tab.

Three typical results. A price column that fills itself: a new row with a coin ID starts the Zap, Get Coin Price returns the current price in usd or eur, and a second step writes it back. A trend digest for your team chat: Get Trending Coins brings the coins trending over the last 24 hours, ready to be posted. A coin profile on demand: Get Coin Data returns description, links and market data for one coin, useful when someone adds a new asset to a watchlist.

What Zapier does not do for CoinGecko: there is no trigger at all, so CoinGecko never tells Zapier that a price moved. No price alert can start a Zap on its own; something in another app has to start it. No search offers a find-or-create variant either, which makes sense for read-only market data.

The same app is covered on n8n in our CoinGecko n8n integration page and on Make in the CoinGecko Make integration page, worth a read if you are comparing tools.

Vocabulary

Zapier vocabulary in one minute

Seven words you will meet in the editor. Below, each one is used without a second explanation.

Zap
The automation you build: one trigger, then one or more actions that run each time the trigger event happens.
Trigger
The event that starts the Zap. CoinGecko has none, so here it always comes from another app, like a sheet or a form.
Action
What the Zap does once started: the step that fetches, writes or sends something for you in an app.
Task
What Zapier bills: one action that completes successfully. Your plan counts tasks, and only tasks.
Instant vs polling
An instant trigger is reported by the app the moment it happens. A polling trigger is checked by Zapier on a timer.
Filter
A step that lets the Zap continue only when the incoming data meets your condition, and stops it otherwise.
Search step
A step that looks up something that already exists in an app, so the following steps can reuse what it found.
Cost

What it really costs in tasks

CoinGecko is not a premium app on Zapier, so it works on the free plan.

  • Free plan100 tasks a month, unlimited Zaps
  • Free plan stepsTwo steps: one trigger, one action
  • Premium appNo
  • CoinGecko triggersNone, the Zap starts in another app

The trigger of the other app never costs a task, and neither does Zapier checking it for new data. Each CoinGecko action that succeeds counts once, so asking a price and then writing it to a sheet uses two tasks per run. A failed call is not billed. The catch: the free plan only builds two-step Zaps. One trigger plus one CoinGecko action fits. Add the write-back, a filter or the Find Coin Market search and you need a paid plan.

Connect

Connect your CoinGecko account

  1. 01

    Open your connections

In Zapier, open the Apps page of your account and click + Add connection. A dialog with a search box appears. A connection is your account linked once, then reused by every step that calls CoinGecko.

  2. 02

    Pick CoinGecko

Type CoinGecko in the search box, select it and click Add connection. A new tab opens on the CoinGecko side, where you sign in with the account you want the Zap to use.

  3. 03

    Grant access and check it

Approve the access Zapier asks for. To confirm it works, add the Ping the API action to a test Zap: it tells you whether the connected key is valid, and it returns no market data, so nothing else needs mapping.

First Zap

Your first Zap: price a coin from a sheet

GoalEach new row holding a coin ID gets the current price written next to it.

  1. 01

Create the Zap and pick the trigger

Start a new Zap. Since CoinGecko has no trigger, choose your spreadsheet app and its new-row event as the trigger, then the sheet where you list coin IDs.

  2. 02

    Test the trigger

Run the test. Zapier brings back the three most recent rows of that sheet; pick one with a real coin ID so the next step is set up on true data.

  3. 03

    Add Get Coin Price

Add a CoinGecko action, choose Get Coin Price, map the coin ID column into Coin IDs and type the target currencies, for example usd, eur.

  4. 04

    Write the price back

Add an action from the same spreadsheet app that updates that row, and map the price CoinGecko returned into the column you keep for it.

  5. 05

    Test, then publish

Test each step and read what came back before going further, then click Publish. With two actions, this Zap has three steps and needs a paid plan.

Actions

CoinGecko actions

CoinGecko gives you 5 actions. For each one: what it does for you, when to reach for it, and what to watch out for.

1

Get Coin Data

Action

In Zapier“Gets detailed data for a single coin by its ID, including description, links, and market data.”

Returns the full profile of one coin from its ID: description, links and market data, with optional extras such as tickers or a sparkline. One coin per run.

When to use it
someone adds an asset to your research tracker and the row should be completed with its description and official links.
Watch out
it takes a single Coin ID; for several coins in one step, Get Coin Price accepts a list.
2

Get Coin Price

Action

In Zapier“Gets the current price of one or more coins in the requested currencies.”

Gives the current price of one or several coins in the currencies you ask for. Market cap, 24h volume, 24h change and the last update time can be added on top.

When to use it
a portfolio sheet that needs the price of bitcoin and ethereum in eur each time a line is added.
Watch out
coin IDs and currencies go in as comma-separated lists, without spaces in the examples.
4

Ping the API

Action

In Zapier“Tests whether the API is reachable and the connected key is valid.”

Checks that CoinGecko answers and that the connected key still works. It returns no market data, only a sign of life.

When to use it
right after connecting the account, to confirm the key works before you build anything longer. Like Get Trending Coins, it has no field to fill in.
Watch out
it counts as a task when it succeeds, like any other action.
5

Find Listing

Action

In Zapier“Finds coins, exchanges, and categories that match a search query.”

Looks up coins, exchanges and categories matching a word you type, such as uniswap or defi. Despite its name, Zapier files it as an action, not as a search step.

When to use it
a form where people type a project name and you need the matching coin ID before asking for its price.
Searches

CoinGecko search

1 search step looks for data that already exists in CoinGecko, so a later step can use it.

A search step sits at the bottom of the action list, under SEARCH. Three settings decide what happens when the result surprises you.

1

Find Coin Market

Search

In Zapier“Finds coins ranked by market capitalization with price, volume, and change data.”

Returns coins ranked by market capitalization, each with its price, volume and change, in the currency you set. A sparkline can be added.

When to use it
a market snapshot for a client report, built from the top of the ranking.
Watch out
on the default setting only the first result is kept, so switch to all results if you want the whole ranking.

The three settings every search exposes

  1. Successful if no search results are found?
Left on its default, an empty search stops the Zap and skips the steps that needed it. Switched on, the Zap carries on empty-handed.
  2. Create X if it doesn't exist yet?
This box turns a search into a find-or-create. CoinGecko does not offer it, which fits read-only market data.
  3. If multiple search results are found?
Three ways out when several items match: keep the first one (the default), stop the Zap, or hand all of them on.
When it breaks

When a CoinGecko Zap breaks

Zapier attaches no help article to CoinGecko and lists no limit of its own for this app. What breaks comes from how Zaps work in general, and from the app that starts yours.

Four cases follow from that, two from the starting app and two from the CoinGecko search. When a run fails, our Zapier troubleshooting page is the next stop.

  • Rows added before publishing are ignored

A Zap only reacts to what happens after it is switched on. Coins already listed in your sheet get no price until you handle them separately.
  • A big paste gets held back

Pasting a long list of coins into the watched sheet at once can trip Zapier's flood protection, which holds the batch instead of running every row.
  • Find Coin Market returns one coin

With the default setting for multiple results, only the first coin of the ranking moves on. Pick the option that hands all of them on.
  • An empty search stops everything

If a search finds nothing and the setting stays on its default, the Zap stops there and the following steps are skipped, without any task billed.

FAQ

CoinGecko Zapier integration: frequent questions

01Is the CoinGecko Zapier integration free?
Yes, CoinGecko is not a premium app on Zapier, so it runs on the free plan. That plan gives you 100 tasks a month and unlimited Zaps, each limited to two steps. A trigger from another app followed by one CoinGecko action, such as Get Coin Price, fits. Writing the result back to a sheet adds a second action and makes it a multi-step Zap, which needs a paid plan. Check the Zapier pricing page before sizing anything.
02How many tasks does a CoinGecko Zap use?
One task per CoinGecko action that succeeds, per run. The trigger from the other app costs nothing, and Zapier checking it for new data costs nothing either. Ask for a price and write it to a sheet, and each new row costs two tasks. Even Ping the API counts once when it succeeds. A call that fails is not billed. Multiply the runs you expect each month by the actions in the Zap to know which plan you need.
03Does CoinGecko work in real time with Zapier?
Not on its own, because CoinGecko has no trigger. The data is current when the action runs, but the moment it runs depends on the trigger of the app that starts the Zap. If that trigger is instant, the Zap starts right away. If it is a polling trigger, Zapier checks it on a timer set by your plan: 15 minutes on Free, 2 on Professional, 1 on Team and Enterprise. Pick a starting app that fits how fresh the price must be.
04What does it take to connect CoinGecko to Zapier?
A CoinGecko account, then a few clicks in Zapier. Open Apps, click + Add connection, search CoinGecko, sign in in the tab that opens and approve the access. The connection is saved once and every CoinGecko step reuses it. To make sure the key behind it is valid, run the Ping the API action in a test Zap; it confirms the API answers before you build anything longer. Like Get Trending Coins, it has no field to fill in.
05Which coin ID does Get Coin Price expect?
The ID CoinGecko uses, not the name you read on screen. Get Coin Price and Get Coin Data both expect the ID CoinGecko uses, written like the examples in the field: bitcoin, ethereum, solana. If your sheet or form only holds names, add Find Listing before the price step to look up the matching ID, then map that ID into Coin IDs. Several IDs and currencies go in as comma-separated lists.
06What if the CoinGecko operation you need does not exist?
Zapier offers five CoinGecko actions and one search, and no raw request step for this app, so a call outside that list cannot be made from here. Start by checking whether Get Coin Data, with its optional extras, already carries the value you are after. If it does not, the n8n and Make versions of CoinGecko are worth a look, since each platform exposes its own set of operations. Compare before building.
07Zapier, Make or n8n for CoinGecko?
Judge it on three criteria. Starting point: CoinGecko has no trigger on Zapier, so you need another app to start each Zap; check how each platform lets you run a scenario on its own. Cost: Zapier bills every successful action, so price lookups on many rows add up fast; compare with how Make and n8n count usage on their own pricing pages. Coverage: list the CoinGecko operations you need and confirm they exist on the platform you pick.
