Descript Zapier integrationAutomate Descript with Zapier.

The Descript Zapier integration gives you 0 triggers, 5 actions and 4 searches. Another app starts the Zap, and Descript takes over: it imports the media, edits the project from a plain-language prompt, publishes it or hands back the transcript.

Beta app Zapier still marks this integration as beta.

Overview

What the Descript Zapier integration does for you

Descript is an audio and video editor where you edit by changing the text of the transcript, or by asking its AI agent in plain words. Through Zapier, other apps can feed it files, ask it for edits, publish the result and collect the transcript, so a recording goes from raw file to shareable link without anyone clicking through each stage.

A podcast episode that edits itself. Import Media drops the new recording into a project, then Edit Project With AI runs an instruction such as removing filler words.

A shareable link at the end. Publish Project creates a share link and a downloadable export of the composition, ready to send to a client or a guest.

Show notes and blog drafts from the transcript. Export Transcript returns the text as plain text, Markdown, HTML or RTF, with optional timecodes.

What Zapier does not do here: Descript has no trigger in Zapier, so nothing happening inside Descript can start a Zap. The Zap always begins in another app, and Descript steps in second. Zapier also flags the Descript integration as beta. And a Zap never processes the recordings that existed before you switched it on.

Vocabulary

Zapier terms, in plain English

Eight words carry this page. Each one gets a single line here and is not explained again.

Zap
The automation you build on Zapier: one trigger, then one or more actions that run every time the trigger event happens.
Trigger
The event in an app that starts the Zap. Once the Zap is on, Zapier waits for it. With Descript, it always comes from another app.
Action
What the Zap does after it starts: the step that writes, sends or moves something for you, like importing a file into Descript.
Task
The unit Zapier bills: one action the Zap completes successfully. Your plan's allowance is counted in tasks.
Polling vs instant
A polling trigger is checked by Zapier on a timer. An instant trigger is reported by the app itself the moment the event happens.
Filter
A step that lets the Zap go on only when the data that arrived meets your condition, and stops it otherwise.
Search step
A step that looks up something already in an app, such as a Descript project, so the next steps can use it.
Multi-step Zap
Any Zap beyond one trigger and one action. A second action, a filter or a search makes one, and it needs a paid plan.
Cost

What Descript costs you in Zapier tasks

Descript is not a premium app, so it works on the free plan. What you pay for is each Descript step that completes.

  • Premium appNo, available on the free plan
  • Status on ZapierBeta
  • Free plan100 tasks per month, two-step Zaps
  • Each successful action1 task

The trigger never costs a task, and Zapier checking the starting app for new items costs nothing either. Each action that succeeds counts as one task, and one that fails is not counted. A Zap that imports, edits with AI and publishes uses three tasks per recording. The free plan gives 100 tasks a month, but only two-step Zaps: a trigger plus Import Media fits, the full chain does not. A search such as Find Project or a filter also makes the Zap multi-step, which needs a paid plan.

Connect

Connect Descript to Zapier in 3 steps

  1. 01

    Open Apps

In your Zapier account, go to Apps and click + Add connection. A connection is your Descript account linked to Zapier once, then reused by every Descript step in your Zaps.

  2. 02

    Find Descript

Search for Descript in the dialog, select it and click Add connection. You need an existing Descript account, with access to the projects the Zap will open or publish.

  3. 03

    Sign in and grant access

Sign in to Descript in the tab that opens and allow Zapier to use the account. The connection then appears in every Descript action and search you add.

First Zap

Your first Zap: from raw recording to published episode

GoalWhen a finished recording lands in a storage folder kept only for episodes ready to go out, Descript imports it, cleans it up with an AI prompt and publishes a shareable version.

  1. 01

    Build: pick the starting app

Click Build and choose your storage tool with its new file event as the trigger, on a folder that only receives episodes ready to publish. Testing brings back the three most recent files.

  2. 02

    Import into Descript

Add Import Media, select your connection, choose a new or existing project and map the file. The step waits until the import is done before the Zap moves on.

  3. 03

    Edit with a prompt

Add Edit Project With AI, point it at the project and write the Edit Prompt in plain words, for instance asking it to remove filler words.

  4. 04

    Publish the result

Add Publish Project with the same project. It creates a shareable link and a downloadable export. Four steps make this Zap multi-step, so it needs a paid plan.

  5. 05

    Test, then Publish

Use Test on each step and read what came back before going on. When everything looks right, click Publish to switch the Zap on.

Actions

The 5 Descript actions

Descript gives you 5 actions. For each one: what it does for you, when to reach for it, and what to watch out for.

1

Cancel Job

Action

In Zapier“Cancel a running job by its job ID.”

Stops a Descript job that is still running, identified by its Job ID. It is the brake pedal of the set, used when a long job is no longer wanted.

When to use it
an export was started on the wrong project and should not finish.
Watch out
the Job ID must come from the list or an earlier step.
2

Edit Project With AI

Action

In Zapier“Edit a project using natural language AI prompts. Waits for edit to complete.”

Edits a project from a plain-language instruction sent to the Descript agent, such as adding studio sound to every clip or cutting a 30-second highlight reel. The step waits for the edit to finish.

When to use it
a marketing team that wants every webinar recording cleaned the same way.
3

Export Transcript

Action

In Zapier“Export a project composition transcript as text, Markdown, HTML, or RTF. Returns the transcript content directly.”

Returns the transcript of a project composition directly, as text, Markdown, HTML or RTF. Optional settings add markers and timecodes at paragraph breaks, speaker changes or markers.

When to use it
a content team that turns each interview into a written draft for the blog.
4

Import Media

Action

In Zapier“Import media files into a new or existing project. Waits for import to complete.”

Brings media files into a new or existing Descript project and waits until the import is finished. It can also line all the imported files up in one composition.

When to use it
a podcast producer whose guests upload raw audio to a shared folder.
Watch out
choosing between a new and an existing project is required.
5

Publish Project

Action

In Zapier“Publish a project composition to create a shareable link and downloadable export. Waits for the publish to complete.”

Publishes a project composition and gives back a shareable link plus a downloadable export, once publishing has completed.

When to use it
a training company that sends each finished lesson video to learners through its own platform.
Watch out
the Project ID is required, so map it from an earlier step.
Searches

The 4 Descript searches

4 search steps look for data that already exists in Descript, so a later step can use it.

A search step looks up a project or a job that already exists in Descript and passes what it found to the next steps. In the editor, the searches sit at the bottom of the Action event list, under SEARCH. Three settings decide what happens when the result is not what you expected.

1

Find Job

Search

In Zapier“Find recent jobs, optionally filtered by project or job type. Returns jobs from the last 7 days by default.”

Lists recent Descript jobs, which by default means the last 7 days, and can narrow them by project or by job type.

When to use it
an operations lead who wants to see whether an import is still running before launching another one.
2

Find Project

Search

In Zapier“Find projects by name (case-insensitive substring match) and other filters like folder, creator, or date range.”

Finds Descript projects by name, matching any part of it and ignoring capitals, with extra filters such as folder, creator or date range.

When to use it
a task marked done in your project tool carries the episode name, and the Zap needs the matching project.
Watch out
a short name can match several projects.
3

Get Job Status

Search

In Zapier“Get a job's status and details by its job ID.”

Gives the status and details of a single job from its Job ID, the only required field. Handy to know whether a job finished before acting on it.

When to use it
before Cancel Job, to confirm the job is still running.
4

Get Project Details

Search

In Zapier“Get full details for a project by its ID, including its compositions, media files, and any published share pages.”

Reads the full record of one project from its ID, with its compositions, media files and any published share pages.

When to use it
after publishing, to pick up the share page and post it in your team's channel or your client report.

The three settings every search exposes

  1. Successful if no search results are found?
Left on its default, a search that finds nothing stops the Zap there and the steps that depend on it are skipped. Switched on, the Zap carries on empty-handed.
  2. Create X if it doesn't exist yet?
This box turns a search into a find-or-create. Descript offers no such variant for any of its searches, so you will not see it here.
  3. If multiple search results are found?
Three ways out when several items match: keep the first one, which is the default, stop the Zap, or pass all of them on.
When it breaks

When the Descript Zap breaks

Zapier links no help article to Descript, so the known failure points are the general ones that every Zap shares.

With Descript, the trigger lives in another app, so most of these traps start there: in the folder you watch, in the files that pile up, in what existed before the Zap. Read the cases before you publish, and see Zapier troubleshooting if a Zap fails for another reason.

  • Old recordings are never imported

A Zap only reacts to what happens after you switch it on. The files already in your folder stay where they are; bringing that backlog into Descript is a separate job.
  • The export lands where the trigger watches

If the Zap saves Descript's export into the very folder its trigger watches, each export starts the Zap again and the tasks drain fast.
  • A bulk upload gets held back

Drop a large batch of files into the watched folder at once and the trigger may return a huge pile. Zapier's flood protection can hold that batch back.
  • The same file is not processed twice

On a polling trigger, Zapier remembers what it has already seen, so the same file does not start the Zap a second time.

FAQ

Descript Zapier integration: frequent questions

01Is the Descript Zapier integration free?
Yes on the Zapier side: Descript is not a premium app, so it works on the free plan. That plan gives you 100 tasks a month and Zaps of two steps only, one trigger and one action. A trigger in your storage app followed by Import Media fits. The full chain, import then AI edit then publish, is multi-step and needs a paid plan, and so does any Zap with a search like Find Project.
02How many tasks does a Descript Zap use?
One task per Descript action that succeeds, and nothing for the trigger. A Zap that imports a recording, edits it with AI and publishes it uses three tasks per recording. Add Export Transcript and it is four. An action that fails is not counted. Zapier looking for new items in the starting app is free, however often it checks. A few apps and actions take more than one task, so read the task history after the first runs.
03Does Descript work in real time with Zapier?
Descript has no trigger, so the timing depends on the app that starts the Zap. If that app offers an instant trigger, it reports the event to Zapier straight away. If it uses a polling trigger, Zapier checks it every 15 minutes on Free, every 2 on Professional and every minute on Team and Enterprise. Once the Zap starts, Import Media, Edit Project With AI and Publish Project each wait for Descript to finish before the next step runs.
04What does it take to connect Descript to Zapier?
An existing Descript account, plus access to the projects the Zap will touch. In Zapier, open Apps, click + Add connection, search for Descript and click Add connection, then sign in to Descript in the tab that opens and grant access. Several actions and searches require a Project ID or a Job ID: you pick it from a list or map it from an earlier step, so make sure the account can see those projects.
05Why can't a Zap start when a Descript project is ready?
Because Descript offers no trigger in Zapier: its 9 operations are 5 actions and 4 searches. A Zap always starts with a trigger, so the first step must come from another app, such as a storage folder, a form or a project tool. What you can do is keep going inside the same Zap: the Descript actions wait for their job to finish, so publishing or exporting can follow an import or an edit in sequence.
06What if the Descript operation you need is not in Zapier?
The Zapier list is closed: 5 actions and 4 searches, around importing, editing, publishing, transcripts and jobs. If what you have in mind is missing, no editor setting will reveal it. Check first whether Edit Project With AI covers it: its prompt is free text, so many editing needs fit into one written instruction to the agent. Otherwise compare with the same app on another automation platform, where the list of operations differs.
07Zapier, Make or n8n for Descript?
It depends on your criteria, not on a ranking. On Zapier the facts are known: Descript works on the free plan, it is flagged beta, it has no trigger, each successful action costs one task, and chaining several Descript steps needs a paid plan. For the two other platforms, ask the same questions: which Descript operations they offer, how they count usage, and what your team already runs. Decide on that comparison.
