Overview

What the Legal Monster Zapier integration does

Legal Monster keeps track of what your users have agreed to, document by document. Zapier connects apps: an event in one triggers work in another. Here, Legal Monster can tell your other tools when a consent is given or withdrawn, and your other tools can record or withdraw consent in Legal Monster.

That gives you three concrete results. A consent log: with New Consent, each agreement adds a line to a spreadsheet, so anyone can see who agreed to what without opening Legal Monster. A clean mailing list: with Consent Withdrawn, the person who changes their mind is taken off your email tool straight away, instead of waiting for someone to notice. A consent saved at the source: with Save Consent to a Document, a sign-up in another app records the agreement against the right document in Legal Monster.

The other action, Withdraw Consent to E-Mail Marketing, works the other way round: an unsubscribe elsewhere withdraws all email marketing consent for that address.

Now what Zapier does not do here. There is no search, so a Zap cannot look up a person's existing consents before acting. There is no way to edit a document from a Zap. And nothing that happened before the Zap was published is sent. If you are weighing tools, the n8n vs Zapier comparison and the Zapier review are the next pages to open.

Vocabulary

Zapier vocabulary in one minute

Seven terms are enough for everything below. Each is explained once, then used as is.

Zap
The automation you build in Zapier: one trigger, then one or more actions that run every time the trigger event happens.
Trigger
The event that starts the Zap. Once the Zap is on, Zapier waits for it. Here: a consent given or a consent withdrawn.
Action
What the Zap does once it starts: the step that writes, sends or moves something for you, such as saving a consent.
Task
The unit Zapier bills: one action your Zap completes successfully. Your plan's allowance is a count of these.
Instant vs polling
An instant trigger is pushed by the app the moment it happens. A polling trigger is checked by Zapier on a timer.
Filter
A step that lets the Zap go on only when what arrived meets a condition you set, and stops it otherwise.
Multi-step Zap
Any Zap beyond one trigger and one action. A filter or a second action makes it one, and it then needs a paid plan.
Cost

What Legal Monster Zaps cost

Legal Monster is not a premium app, so it runs on the free plan. Its two triggers are instant, so the check intervals that slow down polling apps never apply to them.

  • TriggersFree, never counted
  • Each successful action1 task
  • Free plan100 tasks a month, two-step Zaps
  • Legal Monster triggersInstant on every plan

Triggers never cost a task: a consent given or withdrawn reaching Zapier is free. Each action that succeeds counts once, whether it runs in Legal Monster or in another app, and an action that fails is not counted. Saving one consent is one task. The free plan gives you 100 tasks a month and Zaps of two steps only. Add a filter, say to react to one document only, or a second action, and the Zap becomes multi-step, which takes a paid plan. The interval grid below does not apply to Legal Monster, since all its triggers are instant.

Connect

Connect Legal Monster in three steps

  1. 01

    Open Apps

In your Zapier account, go to Apps and click + Add connection. A connection is your Legal Monster account linked to Zapier once, then reused by every Zap that needs it.

  2. 02

    Choose Legal Monster

Search for Legal Monster in the dialog, select it, then click Add connection. A new tab opens on the Legal Monster side, where you sign in with your usual login.

  3. 03

    Sign in and grant access

Log in to Legal Monster and allow Zapier in. You need your own account, plus access to any consents or documents you do not own but want the Zap to read or change.

First Zap

Your first Zap: a running log of new consents

GoalEach time someone gives consent in Legal Monster, add a line to a spreadsheet so the team has a readable log of who agreed to what.

  1. 01

    Pick the trigger

Create a Zap, choose Legal Monster as the app that starts it and New Consent as the event, then select your Legal Monster connection.

  2. 02

    Test it on real data

Run the trigger test. Zapier brings back the three most recent consents of the account, so you can map the next step on one that really exists.

  3. 03

    Add the spreadsheet step

Add the action in your spreadsheet app and map the consent details into the columns. With two steps in total, the Zap stays on the free plan.

  4. 04

    Check the row

Test the action and open the sheet: a new row should be there. If a column is empty, adjust the mapping and test again before you go on.

  5. 05

    Publish

Click Publish to switch the Zap on. From that point, each new consent adds its line as soon as Legal Monster records it.

Triggers

The two Legal Monster triggers

2 events start a Zap when something happens in Legal Monster, and 2 of them are instant: the app calls Zapier straight away, whatever your plan.

Actions

The two Legal Monster actions

Legal Monster gives you 2 actions. For each one: what it does for you, when to reach for it, and what to watch out for.

When it breaks

When a Legal Monster Zap breaks

Zapier links no help article and no rate limit specific to Legal Monster. Most failures come from the way Zapier itself works.

Four situations explain most surprises. If a Zap still misbehaves after you rule them out, the Zapier troubleshooting guide is the next page to open.

  • Old consents never arrive

A Zap only reacts to what happens after it is switched on. Consents given or withdrawn before that stay in Legal Monster, and moving them is a separate job.
  • A withdrawal loop

A Zap that withdraws consent while listening for withdrawals writes where its own trigger watches. It can set itself off again and burn through your tasks.
  • A bulk import held back

When a huge batch arrives at once, after an import or a migration, Zapier's flood protection can hold it back rather than run every item.
  • Missing required fields

Save Consent to a Document stops when the Document or the User Identifier is empty. Make sure the earlier step always provides both.

FAQ

Legal Monster Zapier integration: common questions

01Is the Legal Monster Zapier integration free?
Yes. Legal Monster is not a premium app, so its triggers and actions work on Zapier's free plan. That plan covers 100 tasks a month and Zaps of two steps, one trigger and one action. A Zap that logs each new consent in a spreadsheet fits inside it. Once you add a filter or a second action, the Zap becomes multi-step and needs a paid plan. Zapier's prices change often, so check its pricing page before you settle on a budget.
02How many tasks does a Legal Monster Zap use?
One task per action that succeeds, and none for the trigger. A consent given or withdrawn reaching Zapier costs nothing. If the Zap then adds one row, that is one task. If it adds a row and updates a contact, that is two per consent. The same rule applies when the action runs in Legal Monster: saving a consent is one task. An action that fails is not counted against your plan, but it is worth a look so no consent goes unrecorded.
03Do Legal Monster triggers run in real time?
Yes. New Consent and Consent Withdrawn are both instant triggers: Legal Monster tells Zapier the moment a consent is created or withdrawn, and the Zap starts at once. This is true on every plan, the free one included, so the check intervals of the plans do not apply. In the editor, an instant trigger shows a lightning bolt. Whether a trigger is instant is set by the app, and you cannot change it from Zapier.
04What does it take to connect Legal Monster to Zapier?
A Legal Monster account, and access to the consents and documents the Zap should use. In Zapier, open Apps, click + Add connection, search for Legal Monster and click Add connection. A tab opens where you sign in and grant Zapier access. The connection is saved and reused by every Legal Monster Zap after that. Before you use Save Consent to a Document, set up the documents in Legal Monster, since the action needs one to be picked.
05Why does Save Consent to a Document fail?
Most often because a required field is empty. The action needs a Document and a User Identifier on every run. If the step before it sometimes leaves the identifier blank, for example when a form field is optional, the action has nothing to attach the consent to and stops. Make the identifier mandatory upstream, or map a field that is always filled. A failed action does not cost a task, but the consent is not saved either, so check the Zap history.
06What if the Legal Monster operation you need is missing?
Then this integration does not cover it today. On Zapier, Legal Monster offers two triggers, New Consent and Consent Withdrawn, and two actions, Save Consent to a Document and Withdraw Consent to E-Mail Marketing, with no search. A Zap cannot look up a person's existing consents or edit a document. Anything built from those four operations works. For the rest, the answer sits outside this integration, for instance in another automation tool, and it is worth checking first.
07Zapier, Make or n8n for Legal Monster?
It depends on your criteria, not on a ranking. On Zapier, Legal Monster comes with two instant triggers and two actions ready to use, and the setup is short, which suits a team that wants consent changes flowing quickly. For any other tool, check whether it has a Legal Monster connector, whether withdrawals arrive instantly, and how each run is billed. Then weigh your budget, the number of steps per flow and who will look after it over time.
