Overview

What the Microsoft Advertising Zapier integration does for you

Microsoft Advertising, the ad platform once called Bing Ads, can receive data from your other apps through Zapier. That happens inside a Zap: an automation that runs every time something happens in one app and does something in another. Here, Microsoft Advertising is always the app that receives. You stop exporting files and uploading them to the ad account by hand.

Customer lists that fill themselves. Each new form entry sends its email to an existing list with Add Contact to Customer List, so the audience you target grows with every sign-up.

Lists kept clean. Remove Contact From Customer List takes a contact out when another app tells you to, for instance when someone leaves your mailing list.

Offline sales counted against your ads. When a sale closes outside the website, Apply Offline Conversion sends it to Microsoft Advertising with the Microsoft Click ID of the original click, so the sale is tied back to that click.

What Zapier does not do here: Microsoft Advertising has no trigger, so nothing in the ad account can start a Zap. Spend, clicks or a new campaign will never set one off. There is no search step either, so a Zap cannot check whether a contact is already in a list. And the contact type supports emails only for now, so a phone number cannot feed a list.

Vocabulary

Zapier words in one minute

Eight terms that come back across this page, one plain line each.

Zap
The automation you build on Zapier: one trigger, then one or more actions that run every time the trigger event happens.
Trigger
The event in an app that starts the Zap. With Microsoft Advertising it always comes from another app, as the ad platform has none.
Action
The step that writes, sends or moves something once the Zap has started. The four Microsoft Advertising operations are actions.
Task
What Zapier bills: one action that completes successfully. Your plan is a count of tasks, nothing more.
Polling trigger
A trigger Zapier checks on a timer, asking the app for new items at a fixed interval and keeping only the new ones.
Instant trigger
A trigger the app reports itself, calling Zapier the moment the event happens, so nothing waits for the next check.
Filter
A step that lets the Zap go on only when what arrived meets your condition, and stops it otherwise.
Multi-step Zap
Any Zap beyond one trigger and one action. A filter or a second action makes one, and it then needs a paid plan.
Cost

What a Microsoft Advertising Zap really costs

Microsoft Advertising is not a premium app on Zapier, so it is available from the free plan.

  • Premium appNo
  • Free plan100 tasks a month, two-step Zaps
  • BilledEach successful action
  • Not billedThe trigger, and failed actions

The trigger of the app that starts the Zap costs nothing. Each Microsoft Advertising action that succeeds counts as one task, and one that fails is not counted. Adding a contact and then applying a conversion for the same sale is two tasks. The free plan gives 100 tasks a month and unlimited Zaps, each one limited to two steps, so a filter or a second action means a paid plan. The interval grid applies to the polling trigger of the starting app.

Connect

Connect Microsoft Advertising to Zapier in three steps

  1. 01

    Open the Apps page

In your Zapier account, open Apps and click + Add connection. A connection is your ad account linked to Zapier once, then reused by every Microsoft Advertising step in your Zaps.

  2. 02

    Find Microsoft Advertising

Search for Microsoft Advertising in the dialog, pick it from the results, then click Add connection. A new tab opens, and that is where you finish linking the account.

  3. 03

    Sign in and grant access

Sign in to Microsoft Advertising in that tab and grant Zapier access. You need an account on the app, plus read or write access on anything you do not own yourself and want the Zap to touch.

First Zap

Your first Zap: sign-ups into a customer list

GoalEach time someone fills in your form, keep only the entries that meet your condition, then add their email to a Microsoft Advertising customer list.

  1. 01

Create the Zap and pick the trigger

Start a new Zap and choose your form app with its new-entry event as the trigger. Every run of the Zap will start from there.

  2. 02

    Test the trigger

Run the test: Zapier brings back the three most recent entries of the connected account. Pick one with a real email address so the mapping uses true data.

  3. 03

    Add the filter

Click the plus icon, add Filter and fill the three boxes: the field to look at, the rule, the value. Text rules only work on text.

  4. 04

    Add the customer list action

Add Microsoft Advertising with Add Contact to Customer List. Enter both IDs, pick the list from the dropdown, choose email as contact type and map the form's email.

  5. 05

    Test, then publish

Test the action and read what came back before going further. Then click Publish. With its filter, this Zap is multi-step and needs a paid plan.

Actions

The four Microsoft Advertising actions

Microsoft Advertising gives you 4 actions. For each one: what it does for you, when to reach for it, and what to watch out for.

1

Add Contact to Customer List

Action

In Zapier“Adds a contact to an existing customer list.”

Puts a contact into a customer list that already exists in your ad account, ready for your audience targeting.

When to use it
every new sign-up on your form should join the list you target in your campaigns.
Watch out
the contact type supports emails only, and the list must already exist; pick it from the dropdown.
2

Apply Offline Conversion

Action

In Zapier“Applies offline conversions for the account with Microsoft Click Id among other offline conversion data.”

Records a conversion that happened away from the website and ties it to the ad click through its Microsoft Click ID.

When to use it
a conversion recorded in another app, away from your website, should count for the ad click that started it.
Watch out
the goal name must match an existing conversion goal, and the conversion time must fall within the last 90 days.
3

Create Customer List

Action

In Zapier“Create a new customer list in Microsoft Ads.”

Opens a brand new customer list in Microsoft Advertising, with its name and how long contacts stay in it.

When to use it
a new audience has to exist before contacts can go into it, and the decision to open it comes from another app.
Watch out
membership duration goes from 1 to 390 days, defaults to 30, and -1 means the list never expires.
4

Remove Contact From Customer List

Action

In Zapier“Removes a contact from an existing customer list.”

Takes a contact out of an existing customer list so they no longer belong to that audience.

When to use it
a contact no longer belongs in an audience, and another app is where you learn it.
Watch out
pick the same list and contact type you used when adding, and check the result at test.
When it breaks

When a Microsoft Advertising Zap breaks

Zapier links no help article to Microsoft Advertising and records no rate limit for it. The traps come from the required fields and from general Zapier behavior.

Six cases cover what goes wrong most of the time. When a run fails and the reason is not among them, see our Zapier troubleshooting guide.

  • A conversion older than 90 days

The conversion time must sit within the last 90 days. Past that, the action fails when Zapier sends the offline conversion to Microsoft Advertising.
  • The goal name does not match

Apply Offline Conversion needs the name of an existing conversion goal. A name that does not match means the conversion data is not applied.
  • Only emails go into a list

The contact type of a customer list supports emails only for now. Map an email address into it, and check the result at test before publishing.
  • Old sign-ups stay out

A Zap only reacts to what happens after you switch it on. Contacts collected earlier are not sent; moving that backlog is a separate job.
  • A Zap that feeds itself

As a general precaution, a Zap that writes into the very place its own trigger watches can set itself off again and again, and burn tasks fast.
  • A bulk import is held back

When the starting app suddenly returns a huge batch, after a bulk import or a migration, Zapier's flood protection can hold those runs back.

FAQ

Microsoft Advertising Zapier integration: frequent questions

01Is the Microsoft Advertising Zapier integration free?
Yes. Microsoft Advertising is not a premium app on Zapier, so it works on the free plan. That plan includes 100 tasks a month and an unlimited number of Zaps, each limited to two steps: one trigger and one action. A form entry that adds an email to a customer list fits exactly. Add a filter to keep only some entries, or a second action, and the Zap becomes multi-step, which needs a paid plan. The free plan also checks polling triggers every 15 minutes.
02How many tasks does a Microsoft Advertising action use?
One task per action that succeeds. The trigger from the starting app is free, and so is the check for new data. A Zap that adds a contact to a list and also applies an offline conversion for the same person uses two tasks per run. A failed action, such as a conversion rejected for being too old, is not counted. To size a plan, multiply the number of sign-ups or sales you expect by the number of actions in your Zap.
03Does Microsoft Advertising update in real time through Zapier?
That depends on the app that starts the Zap, since Microsoft Advertising has no trigger. If your form or sales tool has an instant trigger, it reports the event to Zapier straight away and the action follows. If it has a polling trigger, Zapier checks it on a timer set by your plan: 15 minutes on Free, 2 on Professional, 1 on Team and Enterprise. Check the trigger type of the starting app on its Zapier page.
04What do you need to connect Microsoft Advertising to Zapier?
An account on Microsoft Advertising, plus read or write access on anything you do not own yourself and want the Zap to touch. You connect once from the Apps page of your Zapier account with + Add connection, sign in in the tab that opens and grant access. Then keep two numbers at hand for every action: the Customer ID, shown as Manager Account ID in the manager account settings, and the Account ID from the account settings.
05Why is an offline conversion not showing up?
Check three required fields. The Conversion Goal Name has to match an existing conversion goal exactly, otherwise the offline conversion data is not applied. The Microsoft Click ID, the MSCLKID of the original click, must come from an earlier step, so the app that records the sale needs to hold it. And the Conversion Time must be within the last 90 days, or the action fails. Run the action test with a recent, real sale to confirm the setup.
06What if the Microsoft Advertising operation you want is missing?
Then Zapier does not offer it for this app today. The editor shows four actions, all about customer lists and offline conversions, and no setting adds more. The Microsoft Advertising page on zapier.com shows the current list of operations, which is the place to check before you design a Zap around something else, rather than assuming it exists somewhere in the menus. If your idea starts with something happening inside the ad account, there is no trigger to catch it.
07Zapier, Make or n8n for Microsoft Advertising?
Compare on criteria rather than reputation. Coverage first: check which Microsoft Advertising operations each tool offers, since customer lists and offline conversions are what Zapier provides. Shape second: a sign-up that feeds a list is a two-step Zap the free plan covers, while a filter or extra step needs a paid plan. Billing third: Zapier counts each successful action as a task, so feeding a list and a conversion for the same sale doubles the count.
