MoEngage Zapier integration: 0 triggers, 4 actions, 0 searches. MoEngage is the receiving end: another app spots the event, then a Zap creates a user, logs an event, moves someone in a cohort or fetches a report. Here is the cost, the setup and what breaks.

Overview

What the MoEngage Zapier integration does for you

The MoEngage Zapier integration feeds your customer engagement platform from the rest of your tools. MoEngage combines customer analytics, automated engagement across channels and personalization; Zapier keeps its user profiles, events and cohorts in line with what happens elsewhere. Four actions are on offer, and no trigger.

Three results come up most. A profile for every signup: someone fills in your form, and Create or Update User adds them to MoEngage, or refreshes their attributes when the profile already exists. The right people in the right cohort: Add or Remove User From Cohort (Audience) puts a user into a cohort, or takes them out, so your campaigns aim at a list that follows the facts. An event MoEngage would not see otherwise: Import User Event records something that happened in another tool against a user, by its Event Name.

What Zapier does not do here matters as much. Nothing that happens in MoEngage can start a Zap, since the app has no trigger on Zapier. There is no search step either, so a Zap cannot look up a user before writing. And Fetch Campaign Report only pulls reports already set up in MoEngage; it does not build them.

Vocabulary

The Zapier words you need, in one minute

Zapier comes with its own vocabulary. Each word is explained once here, in plain terms, then used as is on the rest of the page.

Zap
The automation you build on Zapier: one trigger, then one or more actions that run each time the trigger event happens.
Trigger
The event in an app that starts the Zap. MoEngage has none on Zapier, so another app always plays this part.
Action
What the Zap does once it has started: the step that writes, sends or moves something for you, such as a user profile.
Task
The unit Zapier bills: one action your Zap completes successfully. The number on your plan counts those.
Polling vs instant
A polling trigger is checked by Zapier on a timer. An instant trigger is reported by the app itself, so nothing waits for a check.
Filter
A step that lets the Zap go on only when what arrived meets the condition you set, and stops it otherwise.
Connection
Your MoEngage account linked to Zapier once, then reused by every step that writes into MoEngage.
Multi-step Zap
Any Zap beyond one trigger and one action. A second action or a filter makes one, and it then needs a paid plan.
Cost

What a MoEngage Zap really costs

MoEngage is not a premium app, so it works from the free plan. Zapier bills completed actions, not checks.

  • Trigger0 tasks
  • Each action that succeeds1 task
  • Free plan100 tasks a month, two-step Zaps
  • Premium appNo

The trigger of the other app never costs a task, and looking for new data costs nothing either. Each MoEngage action that succeeds counts as one task; one that fails is not counted. The free plan gives 100 tasks a month and unlimited Zaps, each limited to two steps: add a filter or a second action and you need a paid plan. The interval grid below only concerns a polling trigger of the app that starts your Zap. MoEngage has no trigger, so the grid never applies to it.

Connect

Connect MoEngage to Zapier in three steps

  1. 01

    Open the connections page

In your Zapier account, go to Apps, then click + Add connection. Before you start, have an account on MoEngage, plus read or write access on anything you do not own yourself and want the Zap to touch.

  2. 02

    Pick MoEngage

In the dialog, type the app name, select MoEngage in the results, then click Add connection. A new tab then opens on the MoEngage side for the sign-in.

  3. 03

    Sign in and grant access

Sign in to MoEngage in that tab, then let Zapier use the account. The connection is saved once, and every MoEngage step of every Zap you build reuses it.

First Zap

Your first Zap: a MoEngage profile and cohort for each signup

GoalEach time your form receives a submission, create or update the user in MoEngage, then add them to a cohort.

  1. 01

    Build: start on the form

Create a Zap and pick your form tool with its new-submission event as the trigger. MoEngage cannot start a Zap, so the starting point always lives in another app.

  2. 02

Test the trigger on a real entry

Run the trigger test. Zapier brings back the three most recent submissions of the connected account, so you map the next steps on real answers, not on guesses.

  3. 03

    Add Create or Update User

Pick MoEngage and Create or Update User. Map a stable identifier into Customer ID, since that is what MoEngage uses to find or create the user, then the attributes you want.

  4. 04

Add the cohort step (paid plan)

Add Add or Remove User From Cohort (Audience), choose to add, then fill Cohort Name and Cohort ID. A second action makes the Zap multi-step, so it needs a paid plan.

  5. 05

    Test, read, then publish

Run each step once and read what came back before going further. When both steps look right, click Publish to switch the Zap on.

Actions

The 4 MoEngage actions

MoEngage gives you 4 actions. For each one: what it does for you, when to reach for it, and what to watch out for.

1

Add or Remove User From Cohort (Audience)

Action

In Zapier“This action adds or removes a user from a cohort using the Cohort APIs.”

Puts one user into a cohort or takes them out of it, depending on the choice you make in its required Add or Remove User? field.

When to use it
a status change elsewhere should decide who your next MoEngage campaign reaches.
Watch out
Cohort Name and Cohort ID are both required, so the cohort must exist in MoEngage first.
2

Create or Update User

Action

In Zapier“This action adds a user into MoEngage. If the user profile already exists, this action updates the user’s attributes.”

Adds a user to MoEngage, or updates the attributes of that user when the profile already exists. The required Customer ID is what tells the two cases apart.

When to use it
a signup or a change of details elsewhere should land on the MoEngage profile.
Watch out
the Unsubscribe field set to true means MoEngage sends that user no emails.
3

Fetch Campaign Report

Action

In Zapier“This action fetches campaign reports (configured in MoEngage) from MoEngage.”

Fetches a campaign report that is configured in MoEngage. It asks for two required fields: a File Name and your API Secret.

When to use it
a campaign report you configured in MoEngage is needed inside a Zap.
Watch out
check at the test what comes back before mapping it anywhere.
4

Import User Event

Action

In Zapier“This action imports a user event to MoEngage using the Event APIs.”

Records an event against a user in MoEngage, named by the Event Name you give it. Customer ID and Event Name are both required.

When to use it
something a customer did in another tool should count in MoEngage, for your analytics or your campaigns.
Watch out
without a Customer ID mapped from an earlier step, there is no user to attach the event to.
When it breaks

When a MoEngage Zap breaks

Zapier ties no help article to MoEngage, so the traps below are the general ones, seen from a Zap that writes users and events.

They come from the way Zapier runs a Zap, not from MoEngage itself. If one of them is already in your way, see our Zapier troubleshooting guide.

  • No catch-up on the past

A Zap reacts only to what happens after you switch it on. Signups that already existed never reach MoEngage, and moving that backlog is a separate job.
  • A Zap that sets itself off

As a general precaution: a Zap that writes into the very place its own trigger watches can start itself again and again, and eats tasks fast.
  • A sudden flood held back

When a trigger returns a huge batch at once, after a bulk import or a migration, Zapier's flood protection can hold those runs back.
  • The same item, one run

On a polling trigger, Zapier remembers what it has already seen, so the same item does not start the Zap twice.

FAQ

MoEngage Zapier integration: FAQ

01Is the MoEngage Zapier integration free?
Yes, it runs on the free plan, because MoEngage is not a premium app. That plan gives you 100 tasks a month and as many Zaps as you want, but each Zap is capped at two steps: one trigger and one action. A form that creates or updates one MoEngage user per submission fits. Chain the cohort step after it, or add a filter, and the Zap becomes multi-step, which needs a paid plan.
02How many tasks does a MoEngage Zap use?
One task per MoEngage action that succeeds. The trigger in the other app costs nothing, and the checks Zapier runs to look for new data are free as well. An action that fails is not counted. So a signup that creates a user and then adds them to a cohort uses two tasks; the same Zap with only Create or Update User uses one. Count your actions per run, then multiply by how many entries you expect.
03Does MoEngage update in real time?
MoEngage has no trigger on Zapier, so the speed of your Zap depends on the trigger of the app that starts it. If that trigger is instant, the app reports the event itself and nothing waits. If it works by polling, Zapier checks it on a timer set by your plan: every 15 minutes on Free, every 2 on Professional, every minute on Team and Enterprise. A lightning bolt in the editor marks a Zap built on an instant trigger.
04What do you need to connect MoEngage to Zapier?
An account on MoEngage, plus read or write access on anything you do not own yourself and want the Zap to touch. In Zapier, open Apps, click + Add connection, search for MoEngage, then click Add connection. A tab opens where you sign in and grant Zapier access. If you plan to use Fetch Campaign Report, keep the secret from your MoEngage dashboard settings at hand, because that action asks for it on top of the connection.
05Why does a MoEngage user get no emails after the Zap runs?
Check the Unsubscribe field of Create or Update User. It holds the email unsubscribe attribute, and when its value is true MoEngage does not send emails to that user. So if you map it from another tool, make sure the value really reflects the person's email choice. Read the test output of that step before publishing, and only fill the field when the source actually carries that choice for each person.
06What if the MoEngage operation you need isn't there?
Check the MoEngage page on Zapier, which shows the list of operations currently on offer. Today it holds four actions and no trigger or search. If the goal is to react to something that happens in MoEngage, that cannot start from Zapier: the Zap has to begin in another app. If it is about writing data, look at which object you touch: a profile, an event, a cohort membership or a configured report each has its own action.
07Zapier, Make or n8n for MoEngage?
Weigh it on criteria, not on a ranking. Availability first: confirm that MoEngage exists as a ready-made step in the other tool's own catalog, with the actions you need. Then Zap length: on Zapier's free plan a Zap holds one trigger and one action, so a profile plus a cohort update moves you to a paid plan. Then volume: on Zapier every user, event or cohort change written is one task. The polling interval does not concern MoEngage, which has no trigger.
