Overview

What the MonkeyLearn Zapier integration actually does

MonkeyLearn reads text so you do not have to. A classifier sorts a text under tags you defined; an extractor goes looking for one precise piece of information in it. On Zapier the app offers three actions: another app supplies the text, and MonkeyLearn does the reading.

Three results people build with it. First, every support ticket run through your classifier: a new ticket starts the Zap, Classify Text runs it through your classifier, and a second action (paid plan) writes what came back into a spreadsheet row. Second, incoming messages run through your extractor: Extract Text uses one of your extractors, and the test shows what it returns before you map it anywhere. Third, a classifier that keeps learning: Upload Training Data sends new texts to a classifier, tagged or not.

Now what Zapier does not do here. MonkeyLearn has no trigger on Zapier, so nothing that happens in MonkeyLearn can start a Zap. It has no search either, and no action to build a classifier or an extractor: you create those in MonkeyLearn first, then pick them in the Zap. Every Zap with this app starts elsewhere and uses MonkeyLearn as a middle or final step.

Vocabulary

Zapier vocabulary in one minute

The words you will meet in the editor, in plain English. The rest of the page uses them without defining them again.

Zap
The automation you build on Zapier: one trigger, then one or more actions that run each time the trigger event happens.
Trigger
The event in an app that starts the Zap. With MonkeyLearn it always comes from another app, since MonkeyLearn has none.
Action
What the Zap does after it starts: the step that writes, sends or moves something, such as classifying a text.
Task
The unit Zapier bills: one action your Zap completes successfully. Your plan's count is a count of those.
Polling vs instant trigger
A polling trigger is checked by Zapier at a fixed interval. An instant trigger is reported by the app the moment it happens.
Filter
A step that lets the Zap go on only when what arrived meets the condition you set, and stops it otherwise.
Multi-step Zap
Any Zap beyond one trigger and one action. A second action or a filter makes one, and it then needs a paid plan.
Connection
Your MonkeyLearn account linked to Zapier once, then reused by every step and every Zap that uses the app.
Cost

What a MonkeyLearn Zap really costs

MonkeyLearn is not a premium app, so it works from the free plan. The trigger never costs a task. Each MonkeyLearn action that succeeds counts as one, and so does any action after it.

  • Trigger (other app)0 task
  • Each MonkeyLearn action1 task when it succeeds
  • Free plan100 tasks a month, two-step Zaps only
  • Premium appNo

The free plan gives you 100 tasks a month and unlimited Zaps of two steps. A trigger plus Classify Text fits, but nothing follows it. Sending what it returns on to a sheet or a chat is a second action, which makes the Zap multi-step and needs a paid plan. A failed action is not counted. How fast the Zap starts depends on the trigger app: on a polling trigger the interval below applies by plan; on an instant one, it does not apply.

Connect

Connect MonkeyLearn to Zapier in 3 steps

  1. 01

    Open your Apps page

In your Zapier account, go to Apps and click + Add connection. What you need first: an account on the app, plus read or write access on anything you do not own yourself and want the Zap to touch.

  2. 02

    Find MonkeyLearn

Type MonkeyLearn in the search box of the dialog, pick it, then click Add connection. A new browser tab then opens so you can sign in to your MonkeyLearn account.

  3. 03

    Sign in and grant access

Sign in to MonkeyLearn in that tab and grant Zapier access to the account. The connection is saved once and reused by every MonkeyLearn step in every Zap.

First Zap

Your first MonkeyLearn Zap

GoalRun each new help desk ticket through your MonkeyLearn classifier and log what comes back in a spreadsheet.

  1. 01

    Build: choose the trigger

Create a Zap and pick your help desk app with its new-ticket event as the trigger. Connect that account so the Zap can read the ticket text.

  2. 02

    Test the trigger

Run the test. Zapier brings back the three most recent items of the connected account, so you map the next steps on a real ticket.

  3. 03

    Add Classify Text

Add MonkeyLearn and choose Classify Text. Select your Classifier, then map the ticket body into Text. Test the step and read what it returns: that is how you know what to map next.

  4. 04

    Add the spreadsheet (paid plan)

Add your spreadsheet as a second action and map the ticket and a value Classify Text returned at the test into a new row. Two actions make the Zap multi-step: it needs a paid plan and costs two tasks per ticket.

  5. 05

    Test, then publish

Test the last step and check the row. When it looks right, click Publish; the tickets that arrive from then on go through the same path.

Actions

The MonkeyLearn actions

MonkeyLearn gives you 3 actions. For each one: what it does for you, when to reach for it, and what to watch out for.

1

Classify Text

Action

In Zapier“Classifies a text. Eg: topic, sentiment, etc.”

Runs a piece of text through one of your classifiers, built on your own tags, such as a topic or a sentiment. You choose the Classifier and map the Text; both are required.

When to use it
when incoming messages need sorting before anyone reads them, before the rest of the Zap uses them; check at the test what the step returns.
2

Extract Text

Action

In Zapier“Extracts data from text and does other transformations. Eg: find keywords, clean up emails, etc.”

Hands a text to one of your extractors to dig out a specific piece of data, keywords for example; it also covers other transformations, such as tidying up an email. The Extractor and the Text are both required.

When to use it
when the next step needs a precise value buried in a longer message.
Watch out
what the step returns depends on your extractor; read it at the test before mapping it further.
3

Upload Training Data

Action

In Zapier“Uploads training data to a classifier. It may or may not be tagged.”

Sends texts to one of your classifiers as training material, with or without a tag. You pick which Classifier receives them and map the Text.

When to use it
when real messages keep arriving in another app and you want your classifier to learn from them without copying them over by hand.
When it breaks

When a MonkeyLearn Zap breaks

Zapier lists no help article and no rate limit specific to MonkeyLearn. The cases below come from the general rules that every Zap follows.

  • Older texts are not analysed

A Zap only reacts to what happens after it is switched on. Tickets or messages that existed before are not sent to MonkeyLearn; that backlog is a separate job.
  • A Zap that sets itself off

As a general precaution: a Zap that writes into the very place its own trigger watches can start itself again and again and burn through your tasks.
  • A bulk import held back

If the trigger app suddenly returns a huge batch, after a bulk import or a migration, Zapier's flood protection can hold it back.
  • The same item, once only

On a polling trigger, Zapier keeps track of what it has already seen, so the same item does not start the Zap twice.

FAQ

MonkeyLearn Zapier integration: common questions

01Is the MonkeyLearn Zapier integration free?
Yes. MonkeyLearn is not a premium app, so it works on the free plan. That plan gives you 100 tasks a month and an unlimited number of Zaps, each limited to two steps: one trigger and one action. Upload Training Data fits that well, since feeding a classifier needs no step after it. Classifying a text and then sending the tag somewhere takes a second action, which makes the Zap multi-step and needs a paid plan.
02How many tasks does a MonkeyLearn Zap use?
One per action that completes successfully. The trigger in the other app is free, and so is Zapier checking that app for new data. A Zap that runs a ticket through Classify Text and then adds a spreadsheet row uses two tasks per ticket. An action that fails is not counted against your plan. A few apps and actions take more than one task, so check the other apps of your Zap before you size your plan.
03Does MonkeyLearn work in real time with Zapier?
It depends on the app that starts the Zap, because MonkeyLearn has no trigger. If that app's trigger is instant, the Zap runs right away whatever your plan. If it is a polling trigger, Zapier checks it at an interval set by your plan: 15 minutes on Free, 2 on Professional, 1 on Team and Enterprise. The trigger app's page on Zapier says which kind each trigger is, so check it before you promise anyone a fast result.
04What does connecting a MonkeyLearn account require?
An account on the app, plus read or write access on anything you do not own yourself and want the Zap to touch. You connect it from the Apps page of your Zapier account with + Add connection, sign in to MonkeyLearn in the tab that opens, then grant access. Every MonkeyLearn step in every Zap reuses that connection. The classifiers and extractors you want must already exist in that account.
05Do you need a classifier before building a MonkeyLearn Zap?
Yes. Classify Text and Upload Training Data both require a Classifier, and Extract Text an Extractor. They are yours, set up in MonkeyLearn, and no action creates them from a Zap. So build the classifier or extractor in MonkeyLearn first, then come back to the step and pick it. Also check that the account you connected to Zapier is the one that holds them, then test the step on a real text.
06What if the MonkeyLearn operation you want is not there?
Then this integration does not offer it. The MonkeyLearn page on Zapier shows the current list of operations: today it holds three actions, Classify Text, Extract Text and Upload Training Data, with no trigger and no search. A Zap cannot start from MonkeyLearn, nor create or edit a classifier. Check that page before you plan a Zap around a step that is not on it, and keep the rest of the work in the other apps.
07Zapier, Make or n8n for MonkeyLearn?
Weigh the steps you need against how each platform bills. On Zapier, MonkeyLearn gives you three actions, enough to classify, extract or train from text that another app supplies. A Zap that sends the result on to another app needs a second action, which means a paid plan. If you also need MonkeyLearn to start an automation, check first whether Make or n8n offers a MonkeyLearn connector with that step, since this page cannot confirm it.
