Overview

What the Optus SMS Suite Zapier integration does

The Optus SMS Suite Zapier integration lets a Zap (the automation you build on Zapier: one trigger, then one or more actions) send SMS through Optus SMS Suite, a cloud messaging platform for businesses. The event that starts the Zap always comes from another app.

Three results people build with it. An appointment reminder: a booking tool starts the Zap and Send an SMS Message texts the customer the details. A staff alert: a critical form entry or a failed payment elsewhere ends with a text to the on-call phone. A batch notice: a row added to a sheet holds several numbers, and one action texts them all, since the number field accepts a list separated by spaces, commas or semicolons.

What Zapier does not do here deserves a clear line. Optus SMS Suite has no trigger on Zapier, so a Zap cannot start when an SMS arrives or when a reply comes back. There is no search step either. The integration only sends. Every Zap therefore starts in another app, and how fast it reacts depends on that app's trigger, not on Optus SMS Suite.

Two send actions exist: the standard one, and an advanced one with extra options. For a broader view of the platform, see Zapier review and Make vs Zapier.

Vocabulary

The Zapier words used on this page

Eight terms, one line each. The page then uses them without explaining again.

Zap
The automation you build on Zapier: one trigger, then one or more actions that run every time the trigger event happens.
Trigger
The event in an app that starts the Zap. For an Optus SMS Suite Zap, it always comes from another app.
Action
What the Zap does once it has started: the step that writes, sends or moves something, here sending an SMS.
Task
The unit Zapier bills: one action your Zap completes successfully. Your plan is a count of those.
Polling vs instant
A polling trigger is checked by Zapier on a timer; an instant trigger is reported by the app the moment the event happens.
Filter
A step that lets the Zap continue only when what arrived meets your condition, and stops it otherwise.
Connection
Your Optus SMS Suite account linked to Zapier once, then reused by every step that sends through it.
Multi-step Zap
Any Zap beyond one trigger and one action. A filter or a second action makes one, and it then needs a paid plan.
Cost

What an Optus SMS Suite Zap costs

Two meters run here: Zapier tasks on one side, Optus SMS Suite credits on the other.

  • Successful SMS action1 Zapier task
  • Every 160 characters1 more Optus credit
  • Free plan100 tasks a month, two-step Zaps
  • Premium appNo

On the Zapier side, the trigger of the other app never costs a task. Each SMS action that succeeds counts as one task, and a failed one does not count. A Zap with three actions eats three times what a one-action Zap eats. The free plan gives 100 tasks a month, unlimited Zaps, polling every 15 minutes, and Zaps of two steps only. Optus SMS Suite is not a premium app, so it works there. On the Optus side, a message longer than 160 characters is allowed, but every 160 characters uses one more credit.

Connect

Connect your Optus SMS Suite account

  1. 01

    Open Apps

Go to the Apps page of your Zapier account and click + Add connection. You do this once: every Zap that sends through Optus SMS Suite reuses the same connection afterwards.

  2. 02

    Pick Optus SMS Suite

Search for Optus SMS Suite by name in the dialog, select it, then click Add connection. Have your Optus SMS Suite login ready, because the next screen asks for it.

  3. 03

    Sign in and grant access

Sign in to Optus SMS Suite in the tab that opens and grant Zapier access. You need an Optus SMS Suite account, plus access to anything you do not own yourself and want the Zap to use.

First Zap

Your first Optus SMS Suite Zap

GoalText a customer when a new row appears in a booking sheet, but only when the row holds a phone number.

  1. 01

    Pick the trigger app

Create a Zap and choose the app and event that should start it, here a new row in a sheet. Optus SMS Suite has no trigger, so the Zap always starts elsewhere.

  2. 02

    Test the trigger

Run the test. Zapier brings back the three most recent items of that account, so you build the message on a real row with a real number.

  3. 03

    Add a filter

From the plus icon, add a Filter step: the field to look at, the rule and the value, here a check that the phone column is not empty. This step needs a paid plan.

  4. 04

    Add the SMS action

Choose Optus SMS Suite and Send an SMS Message. Map the phone number from the trigger, then write the message, mixing fixed text with values from the row.

  5. 05

    Test, then publish

Test the action on your own number first and read what came back. When the text arrives as expected, publish the Zap to switch it on.

Actions

The 2 Optus SMS Suite actions

Optus SMS Suite gives you 2 actions. For each one: what it does for you, when to reach for it, and what to watch out for.

1

Send an SMS Message

Action

In Zapier“Allows you to send an SMS message to one or more numbers.”

Texts one or more numbers through your Optus SMS Suite account. Several recipients go in the number field, separated by spaces, commas or semicolons, or one per field.

When to use it
a reminder, a confirmation or an alert that only needs a number and a short text.
Watch out
long texts are fine, but each block of 160 characters uses another credit.
2

Send an SMS Message (Advanced)

Action

In Zapier“Allows you to send an SMS message to one or more numbers, with support for advanced options.”

The same send, with extra options on top of the number and the message. Pick it when the standard action does not offer a setting your message needs.

When to use it
a campaign or a notification that needs more control than a plain text.
Watch out
the number and the message stay required, and the 160-character credit rule applies here as well.
When it breaks

When an Optus SMS Suite Zap breaks

Zapier lists no help article and no rate limit for Optus SMS Suite. The cases below come from general Zapier behavior and from the message rule of the app.

Since the Zap always starts in another app, most surprises come from that trigger, not from the SMS step. When a run fails, Zapier troubleshooting is the next stop.

  • Old records never get a text

A Zap only reacts to events after it is switched on. Customers already in your sheet or CRM get nothing; texting them is a separate job.
  • A bulk import sends a flood

If an import suddenly adds a huge batch of rows to the trigger app, Zapier's flood protection can hold those runs back instead of texting everyone at once.
  • Long messages cost more credits

A message over 160 characters goes through, but each block of 160 characters uses one more Optus credit. Mapped fields can quietly push a text past that line.
  • No double sends from polling

When the trigger app is polled, Zapier keeps track of what it already saw, so the same row does not start the Zap, and the SMS, twice.

FAQ

Optus SMS Suite Zapier integration: common questions

01Is the Optus SMS Suite Zapier integration free?
On the Zapier side, yes. Optus SMS Suite is not a premium app, so it works on the free plan, with 100 tasks a month and unlimited Zaps, as long as each Zap stays at one trigger and one action. A filter or a second action makes the Zap multi-step and calls for a paid plan. The messages themselves are another matter: they go through your Optus SMS Suite account and use its credits, which Zapier does not provide.
02How many tasks does an Optus SMS Suite Zap use?
One task each time an SMS action succeeds, and nothing for the trigger of the other app. A failed send is not counted. A Zap that texts the customer and then logs a row elsewhere costs two tasks per run. Credits are a separate meter on the Optus SMS Suite side: a message longer than 160 characters uses one extra credit for every 160 characters. Watch both when you estimate the cost of a reminder Zap.
03Can an Optus SMS Suite Zap react in real time?
It depends on the app that starts it, because Optus SMS Suite has no trigger. If that app has an instant trigger, it reports the event to Zapier itself and the SMS goes out without waiting for a check. If it has a polling trigger, Zapier checks it at the interval of your plan: every 15 minutes on Free, every 2 on Professional, every minute on Team and Enterprise. Pick an instant trigger when timing matters.
04What does it take to connect Optus SMS Suite to Zapier?
An Optus SMS Suite account, plus access to anything you do not own yourself and want the Zap to use. The connection starts on the Apps page of Zapier: add a connection, search for Optus SMS Suite, sign in in the tab that opens and grant access. Once that is done, every Zap that sends through the app reuses it. You also need a trigger app that stores phone numbers, since both actions require one.
05Why did one SMS use several credits?
Because the message was longer than 160 characters. Optus SMS Suite accepts long messages, but every 160 characters uses one more credit. With mapped fields, such as a customer name or an address, the final text can be much longer than the template you typed. Test with the longest realistic values, keep fixed text short, and check the length before publishing a Zap that sends to many people. A single extra word can be enough.
06What if the Optus SMS Suite operation you need is not on Zapier?
Then Zapier cannot do it for this app today. The integration offers 2 actions, both for sending SMS: the standard one and the advanced one. There is no trigger, so a Zap cannot react to an incoming message or a reply, and there is no search. If your workflow needs to read messages, that step has to happen in Optus SMS Suite itself, or with another tool. Nothing else is hidden in the editor for this app.
07Zapier, Make or n8n for Optus SMS Suite?
Decide by what your workflow needs. If it ends with an SMS sent after an event in another app, Zapier covers it: two send actions, a free plan that accepts the app, and nothing to set up beyond a connection. If it needs to react to incoming messages or replies, Zapier offers no trigger for Optus SMS Suite. Check what each tool supports for this app before you choose, and count the credits either way.
