Overview

What the Telegram Zapier integration is good for

Hooking Telegram up to Zapier gives a bot some reflexes. A message the bot receives can start an automation, and an event in any other app can make the bot speak up in a chat. Telegram becomes both an inbox and a megaphone for the rest of your tools, without anyone babysitting the app.

Here is what teams usually get out of it. Ops alerts where people already are: an online store pushes every high-value order into the warehouse group through Send Message, so nobody has to refresh a dashboard. Visual updates on autopilot: a real estate agent's new listing photo lands in the buyers' channel via Send Photo. Quick pulse checks: a product community gets a question as a quiz or a vote with Send Poll, and answers come back inside Telegram.

Now the limits, because they shape what you can build. Everything goes through a bot: Zapier never posts as your personal account and only hears what the bot receives. There is no search step, so a Zap cannot dig up an older message halfway through. And a Zap acts in the moment; it does not go back and fix what happened earlier.

Vocabulary

Zapier vocabulary in one minute

Eight words, and the rest of this page reads without a hitch.

Zap
The automation you build on Zapier: a starting event, then one or more steps that run in order every time it happens.
Trigger
The event that starts the Zap. With Telegram, it is a new message arriving at your bot, and nothing else.
Action
What the Zap does once it runs: here, the bot sends a text, a photo or a poll, or puts a reaction on a message.
Task
The unit Zapier bills: one successful action. Your plan quota counts tasks, not Zaps and not messages received.
Polling vs instant
Either Zapier checks the app on a timer, or the app tells Zapier itself the moment the event happens. Telegram does the latter.
Filter
A step that lets the Zap carry on only when the message meets your condition, and stops the run when it does not.
Connection
Your Telegram bot linked to Zapier once, then reused by every Zap that needs to listen or post through it.
Multi-step Zap
Any Zap beyond one trigger and one action. A filter or a second action makes it one, and that requires a paid plan.
Cost

What it really costs

Telegram is not a premium app on Zapier, so it works on the free plan.

  • Free plan100 tasks a month, unlimited Zaps
  • Steps on the free plan2: one trigger, one action
  • Premium appNo

The trigger is free: a message hitting your bot never uses a task. What counts is each action that succeeds, one by one. A Zap that reacts with an emoji and then sends a reply spends two tasks per message. Failed actions are not counted. The free plan gives you 100 tasks a month but caps Zaps at two steps: one trigger, one action. A simple auto-reply fits. The moment you add a filter to sort messages, the Zap becomes multi-step, which means a paid plan. New Message is instant, so the polling grid below does not apply to it.

Connect

Connect your Telegram bot

  1. 01

    Open your connections

In your Zapier account, go to the Apps page and click + Add connection. Every account your Zaps rely on lives there, and your bot will join them shortly.

  2. 02

    Pick Telegram

In the dialog, type "Telegram", select the app from the results and confirm with Add connection. A new browser tab opens so you can finish signing in.

  3. 03

    Grant access

Sign in through that tab and give Zapier the access it asks for. You need a Telegram account and a bot of your own, because every action posts from the bot and the trigger only listens to it.

First Zap

Your first Zap with Telegram

GoalWhen a customer writes "refund" to your store's bot, the bot reacts so they know it was seen, then replies with how the refund process works.

  1. 01

    Set the trigger

In the editor, during Build, choose Telegram and New Message, then your connection. Send your bot a test message so Zapier has a real one to map from.

  2. 02

    Sort with a filter

Click the plus icon, pick Filter, and in Configure & test set the message text field, a text rule and the value "refund". The Zap is now multi-step.

  3. 03

    React to the message

Add React to Message, map the Message ID from the trigger and choose an emoji the chat allows. The customer sees right away that someone picked it up.

  4. 04

    Send the reply

Add Send Message and write the text: what to include in a refund request and where the policy lives. Turn off link previews if the reply carries a link.

  5. 05

    Test, then publish

Use Test to run each step once and check the chat in Telegram. When everything looks right, click Publish to switch the Zap on.

Triggers

The Telegram trigger available in Zapier

1 event starts a Zap when something happens in Telegram, and one of them is instant: the app calls Zapier straight away, whatever your plan.

1

New Message

Instant trigger

In Zapier“Triggers instantly when a new message is received by your bot via webhook.”

Every message your bot receives starts the Zap, carrying its text and its ID so later steps can pick them up. This is the only way into Zapier from Telegram, and it covers the bot alone: never your personal account, and never chats the bot is not part of.

How it fires
the app tells Zapier the moment it happens, so the Zap starts right away, whatever your plan.
When to use it
a SaaS support team that wants every bug report sent to its bot logged as a ticket.
Watch out
this trigger is where React to Message gets the Message ID it requires.
Actions

The Telegram actions available in Zapier

Telegram gives you 4 actions. For each one: what it does for you, when to reach for it, and what to watch out for.

1

React to Message

Action

In Zapier“Sets an emoji reaction on an existing message.”

The bot drops an emoji on an existing message, optionally with a big animation. A quiet acknowledgment that adds nothing to the thread.

When to use it
showing a customer their request landed before the full answer arrives.
Watch out
a bot sets one standard reaction per message, and some chats limit which emojis are allowed.
2

Send Message

Action

In Zapier“Sends a message from your bot.”

Your bot posts a text, either written up front or assembled from data an earlier step passed along. You can also switch off the automatic link preview to keep the message clean.

When to use it
alerting a warehouse group each time a large order is placed.
Watch out
Message Text is required, so an empty message never goes out.
3

Send Photo

Action

In Zapier“Sends a photo from your bot.”

The bot shares an image: a file handed over by an earlier step, a photo Telegram already stores, or a web address Telegram fetches the picture from. It can go out silently, with no notification sound.

When to use it
posting each new property listing photo to a buyers' channel.
Watch out
the protect option stops people forwarding or saving the photo, useful for internal visuals.
4

Send Poll

Action

In Zapier“Sends a poll from your bot.”

A poll shows up in the chat, anonymous or not, as a regular vote or a quiz with a right answer. It can even go out already closed, handy for previewing how it looks before the real launch.

When to use it
letting a product community vote on which feature to ship next.
Watch out
the question caps at 300 characters, and poll type and anonymity are both required.
When it breaks

When it breaks

With a bot in the middle, failures usually trace back to one setting.

Zapier links two help articles to this app, including Common problems with Telegram on Zapier. The cases below mix the limits of the bot's own fields with the ones every Zap runs into. For a step-by-step method, the Zapier troubleshooting guide helps you find the step at fault.

  • The reaction is rejected

A bot can set one standard reaction per message, and some chats restrict which emojis are allowed. Pick a common emoji the chat accepts.
  • React to Message cannot find its target

The action requires a Message ID. It comes from the New Message trigger: without that trigger upstream, or without mapping it, the action has nothing to aim at.
  • The poll never goes out

A poll question is capped at 300 characters. A longer question, or a poll type left empty, is enough to stop Send Poll from running.
  • Older messages are ignored

A Zap only reacts to messages received after you publish it. Whatever the bot got before stays out of reach, and handling that backlog is a separate job.
  • The bot keeps setting itself off

If what the Zap sends ends up in what its own trigger watches, every send restarts the Zap. Tasks drain fast, so check where the bot is posting.
  • A message spike gets held back

If the bot suddenly receives a huge batch of messages at once, Zapier's flood protection can hold that batch back before any Zap runs.

FAQ

Telegram Zapier integration FAQ

01Is the Telegram Zapier integration free?
Yes, for a two-step Zap. Telegram is not a premium app on Zapier, so it runs on the free plan, which includes 100 tasks a month and unlimited Zaps. The limit is the shape of the Zap: one trigger and one action, nothing more. A plain auto-reply fits inside that. The moment you add a filter to sort incoming messages, or a second action such as a reaction plus a reply, the Zap turns multi-step and needs a paid plan.
02How many tasks does a Telegram message use in Zapier?
None for the incoming message, because a trigger never costs a task. The bill comes from the actions after it, each one counted separately when it succeeds. A Zap that reacts with an emoji and then sends a reply uses two tasks per message handled. A filter that stops the Zap also skips the actions behind it, and their tasks. A failed action is not counted. Multiply expected messages by actions per Zap to size your plan.
03Does Telegram trigger Zapier in real time?
Yes. New Message is an instant trigger: Telegram tells Zapier the moment your bot receives a message, and the Zap starts right away. The polling grid, 15 minutes on the free plan, does not apply to it. That is what makes an auto-reply land while the customer still has the chat open, even on the free plan. In the editor, a Zap built on an instant trigger shows a lightning bolt, so you can confirm it before publishing.
04What do you need to connect Telegram to Zapier?
A Telegram account and a bot of your own, since the trigger listens to the bot and all four actions post from it. You connect from the Apps page in Zapier with the + Add connection button, then sign in through the tab that opens. The bot also needs access to the chats where you want it to read or write, if those chats belong to someone else. Without a bot, none of the five operations will work.
05Why does React to Message fail in a Zap?
Usually because it is missing its Message ID or the chosen reaction is not allowed. The action requires the ID of the target message, which you map from the New Message trigger; without that trigger upstream, nothing can supply it. On top of that, a bot can set only one standard reaction per message, and some chats restrict which emojis they accept. Pick a common emoji and check the chat settings, then run a test.
06What if the Telegram operation you need does not exist?
On Zapier, Telegram offers one trigger and four actions: send a text, a photo or a poll, or react to a message. There is no search step, no action to edit or delete a message, and no access to your personal account. If your project falls outside that, there are two routes: rework it around those four moves, or check what other automation platforms offer for Telegram before you commit to one.
07Zapier, Make or n8n for Telegram?
It depends on your criteria. Zapier suits you if you want a guided editor, an instant trigger that works on the free plan and four bot actions that are quick to set up. On Zapier, sorting messages with a filter already makes the Zap multi-step, so it needs a paid plan. For Make or n8n, compare what each platform offers for Telegram with the bot moves you need, and weigh the tool your team already uses. Count actions per message and expected volume before you decide.
