Power BI Certification: The 8 Best PL-300 Prep Courses in 2026

What the PL-300 exam really costs, how it works, and which course gets you there for your budget and your team. We compared them side by side.

The short answer. To train a team on Microsoft's official course in three days, pick New Horizons ($1,895, live online or as a private group, with 90 days of recordings). Starting from zero on a tight budget? The Coursera Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst Professional Certificate ends with a 50% exam voucher. If you learn by doing, DataCamp gives you the same 50% voucher after 17 hands-on courses. Want one price that covers the exam and a free retake? Graduate School USA ($1,899). And if your company already pays for LinkedIn Learning, its Microsoft Press prep course costs you nothing extra.

There's only one Power BI certification Microsoft issues today: Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate, which you earn by passing the PL-300 exam. It costs $165 in the US, lasts 100 minutes, and you need 700 out of 1,000 to pass. Everything else you'll see called a "Power BI certification" (a Coursera Professional Certificate, a DataCamp statement, a school certificate) is a certificate of completion: proof you finished a course, not proof Microsoft verified your skills.

We compared the curriculum, format, price, exam voucher and reviews of a dozen PL-300 prep options available in English, and checked every exam fact against Microsoft's own pages. Here's which one fits you, and what each one leaves out.

Power BI certification: what each course actually gives you

Three very different things hide behind the word "certification". The Microsoft PL-300 certification is the only one Microsoft issues: a proctored exam, recognized worldwide. A Professional Certificate or statement of accomplishment (Coursera, DataCamp) proves you completed a learning path, and often comes with a discount on the real exam. A certificate of completion from a school or a video platform proves attendance. The PL-300 price depends on the country where you take it: $165 in the US, 140 USD in Canada, £106 in the UK, 4,865 INR in India and $99 in Mexico and most of Latin America.

Best Power BI certification course for teams

New Horizons · PL-300T00 Design and Manage Analytics Solutions Using Power BI

4.2/5

New Horizons teaches the official PL-300T00 course over three full days, as a Virtual Instructor Led class on Central time or as a private group for your company. The outline runs to 22 modules and is current with the latest exam: Power Query, data modeling, DAX (the formula language behind Power BI measures), reports, dashboards, Microsoft Fabric (Microsoft's data platform that now wraps Power BI), Copilot and visual calculations. You keep the class recordings for 90 days, and public dates are marked "guaranteed to run", so a session won't be cancelled for lack of attendees.

The prerequisites are basic data literacy, with DP-900 (Microsoft's data fundamentals exam) suggested. The exam voucher is an add-on, so budget $165 per person on top of the $1,895 seat. For a team, the private-group option is the real draw: same official content, scheduled around your people. The weak spot is social proof. The page shows a 4.8/5 average instructor rating across New Horizons courses, but no reviews specific to this course, so ask for references before you buy several seats.

Standout features
  • Official Microsoft course, 22 modules including Fabric and Copilot
  • Private group option for a whole team
  • 90 days of class recordings
  • Public dates guaranteed to run
+Pros
  • ✓Most complete, up-to-date official outline we found
  • ✓Built for teams, with private groups
  • ✓Recordings help anyone who misses a block
−Cons
  • ✗Exam voucher not included
  • ✗Three full days, dense for someone new to Power Query
  • ✗No reviews specific to this course, only a site-wide instructor average
Verdict

The safest pick for a company training several analysts at once. Solo and paying out of pocket? Coursera or DataCamp gets you to the same exam for far less.

Best Power BI certification prep for beginners

Coursera (Microsoft) · Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst Professional Certificate

4.0/5

Microsoft built this Professional Certificate on Coursera: eight courses, about 188 hours in total, or roughly five months at 10 hours a week. It starts at the very beginning (getting data, cleaning it in Power Query, modeling, DAX, visualizing) and ends with "Microsoft PL-300 Exam Preparation and Practice", a 37-hour course built around a 150-minute mock exam. Finish the program and you get a 50% voucher on the PL-300, which saves you $82.50 on the $165 exam.

It's the most-reviewed option we found: 4.6/5 from 9,670 reviews and more than 570,000 learners. The final prep course also rates 4.6/5, but its reviews flag real issues: a mock exam that feels harder than the lessons, some questions on topics the courses never covered, and a few lessons called out as wrong or outdated. Keep the official practice assessment as your reality check. The program carries an ACE credit recommendation and FIBAA credit of up to 8 ECTS. It's taught in English, with 27 languages listed on the page. You can enroll for free to start, and some courses offer a full-course, no-certificate option.

Standout features
  • Built by Microsoft, 8 courses from zero to exam prep
  • 50% PL-300 voucher when you finish
  • 4.6/5 from 9,670 reviews
  • ACE credit recommendation and up to 8 ECTS
+Pros
  • ✓The best path for a true beginner
  • ✓The voucher offsets part of the subscription
  • ✓Free enrollment to start
−Cons
  • ✗Long: about five months at 10 hours a week
  • ✗Reviews report a mock exam out of step with the lessons
  • ✗The Professional Certificate is not the Microsoft certification, a common mix-up
Verdict

The best value if you start from scratch and can put in a few hours every week. Already fluent in Power Query and DAX? Skip to the last course or go straight to the official resources.

Best hands-on Power BI certification prep

DataCamp · Data Analyst in Power BI (career track)

3.9/5

DataCamp's career track, co-created with Microsoft, packs 17 courses and about 48 to 50 hours of practice that runs right in your browser: no install, no setup. You work through Power Query, data modeling, DAX and report design in short interactive exercises. It rates 4.7/5 from 227 reviews.

The voucher is the reason it ranks here. Finish the track on a paid plan and DataCamp sends you a 50% PL-300 discount code within seven business days. The code is valid for three to six months, so finish the track only when you're ready to book. One thing to know: DataCamp markets the track as a "certification program", but what it issues is a statement of accomplishment. The only certification at the end is Microsoft's, and you still have to pass the PL-300 yourself. For a team, one subscription covers the whole curriculum, which is easier to manage than a stack of separate courses.

Standout features
  • 17 courses of in-browser practice
  • 50% PL-300 voucher on a paid plan
  • 4.7/5 from 227 reviews
  • Co-created with Microsoft
+Pros
  • ✓No software setup, perfect for locked-down work laptops
  • ✓Short exercises fit a busy week
  • ✓The voucher pays back part of the subscription
−Cons
  • ✗Voucher code expires after 3 to 6 months
  • ✗"Certification program" wording oversells a statement of accomplishment
  • ✗The voucher requires a paid plan, not the free tier
Verdict

A strong pick for learners who need to practice, not watch. Pair it with the official practice assessment before you book, since the exam's case studies go deeper than any single exercise.

Best all-in-one price, exam and retake included

Graduate School USA · Power BI Certification Online

3.8/5

Graduate School USA, an ACCET-accredited school, sells this program; the same program is also sold by VDCI under its own name. You get 24 hours in total: a 12-hour bootcamp, a 6-hour advanced module and 6 hours of private tutoring, live (with recordings available for 30 days after each session) or self-paced. You walk away with the school's certificate of completion, and with the Microsoft certification if you pass the exam.

The real selling point is the bundle. The Microsoft exam is included, with a free retake if you fail. The exam is optional: if you skip it, you can swap it for one extra hour of private tutoring. On a $165 exam, a covered second attempt removes the worst-case cost. Two caveats. The page never names the PL-300 exam code, so confirm in writing which exam the voucher covers. And the content leans heavily on Power BI Desktop, with less on the service, governance and Fabric that the current exam also tests.

Standout features
  • Microsoft exam included, with a free retake
  • 6 hours of one-on-one tutoring
  • Live (30 days of recordings) or self-paced
  • ACCET-accredited school
+Pros
  • ✓The only all-in price with an exam retake we found in English
  • ✓Personal tutoring is rare at this price
  • ✓Flexible: live or on your own schedule
−Cons
  • ✗The page doesn't name the PL-300 code
  • ✗Heavy on Power BI Desktop, light on the service and Fabric
  • ✗The exam is optional, and skipping it only buys you one extra hour of tutoring
Verdict

The no-surprises budget pick for one person. Ask which exam the voucher covers before you enroll, then fill the Fabric and governance gaps with Microsoft Learn.

Best classroom option with a satisfaction guarantee

ONLC Training Centers · PL-300: Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst

3.8/5

ONLC runs the PL-300 class over three days with an instructor, either live online or in one of its training centers. It's the cheapest three-day instructor-led option in this ranking at $1,795. Two policies set it apart. Public instructor-led classes come with a satisfaction guarantee (with restrictions, so read them). And you can retake the course for free, once, within 12 months.

Don't confuse that retake with an exam retake. It's the class you can sit again, not the PL-300: the voucher isn't mentioned at all, so plan on $165 per person for the exam. The page shows three five-star testimonials, none about this course, and no overall rating, which leaves you little to judge the instructors by. For a manager who wants people in a room, with a guarantee to point to when asking for budget, it's still a sensible choice.

Standout features
  • Live online or in an ONLC training center
  • Satisfaction guarantee on public instructor-led classes
  • Free course retake within 12 months
  • Lowest price of the 3-day classes ranked
+Pros
  • ✓In-person option, rare among PL-300 courses
  • ✓A guarantee that makes budget approval easier
  • ✓A second pass through the class if someone falls behind
−Cons
  • ✗Exam voucher not mentioned
  • ✗No ratings and no PL-300 reviews on the page
  • ✗The retake covers the course, not the exam
Verdict

A good fit for teams who learn better in a classroom. Budget the exam separately and get the guarantee terms in writing.

Best if your company already has LinkedIn Learning

LinkedIn Learning · Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst Associate (PL-300) Cert Prep by Microsoft Press

3.7/5

Chris Sorensen and Microsoft Press walk through the PL-300 skills in 6 hours and 11 minutes of video, at an intermediate level, in a course released in 2025. It rates 4.6/5 from 298 ratings. It's a review course, not a full training: it assumes you already work in Power BI and want the exam objectives laid out in order.

The appeal is cost. Many companies already hold LinkedIn Learning licenses, so for your team it may be free, and there's a one-month trial if not. What you get at the end is a certificate of completion, not a certification. Practice exams sit in separate courses and aren't part of this one, and there's no instructor to ask when something doesn't click. Use it to structure your review, then move to the official practice assessment.

Standout features
  • Microsoft Press content, released in 2025
  • 4.6/5 from 298 ratings
  • Often free through an enterprise license
  • One-month free trial
+Pros
  • ✓Zero extra cost if your company has licenses
  • ✓Short enough to finish in a week of evenings
  • ✓Content aligned with the current exam objectives
−Cons
  • ✗No practice exam included
  • ✗No instructor or feedback
  • ✗Too short to learn Power BI from scratch
Verdict

A smart first step when the license is already paid. On its own it won't get a beginner through the PL-300.

Best final practice before the PL-300

Coursera (Microsoft) · Microsoft PL-300 Exam Preparation and Practice

3.6/5

This is the last course of Microsoft's Professional Certificate on Coursera, and you can take it on its own. It packs about 37 hours, or four weeks at 10 hours a week, around a 150-minute mock exam, which is longer than the real 100-minute test. It rates 4.6/5 from 729 reviews and has more than 75,000 learners.

Read the reviews before you lean on it. Several learners found the mock exam much harder than the lessons and quizzes, and some questions covered topics the course never taught; one review calls some lessons wrong or outdated. Others say it helped a lot with their preparation. Use it as a stress test, then check your real level with Microsoft's free practice assessment. Like the full program, it's taught in English and ends with a certificate of completion, not the Microsoft certification.

Standout features
  • 150-minute mock exam
  • 4.6/5 from 729 reviews
  • Can be taken on its own
  • Built by Microsoft
+Pros
  • ✓A long timed rehearsal before the real exam
  • ✓Short enough to fit in a month
  • ✓Part of a well-known Microsoft program
−Cons
  • ✗Reviews report a mock exam out of step with the lessons
  • ✗Some lessons reported as wrong or outdated
  • ✗No instructor to ask
Verdict

A useful final rehearsal if you already know Power BI. Don't treat its mock score as a prediction: cross-check with the official practice assessment.

Best live virtual bootcamp from a Power BI training specialist

Pragmatic Works · Power BI PL-300 Bootcamp

3.5/5

Pragmatic Works sells a virtual PL-300 bootcamp for $1,995. The bootcamp page doesn't give the course length; its FAQ says its bootcamps run three to five days. It also offers a 9-hour on-demand PL-300 course and a free 90-minute PL-300 session on YouTube. Its free community plan unlocks more than 50 courses, a genuinely useful way to test the teaching style before you spend anything.

Its blog coverage of the exam is solid, including a sensible warning not to lean on the open-book access to Microsoft Learn during the test. The paid side is less transparent. The voucher isn't mentioned, the bootcamp page says you "may" receive a certificate of completion, and the on-demand course price isn't displayed. At $1,995, that's the most expensive seat in this ranking with the least written down. Start with the free plan, and ask for the exact schedule and what's included before you book the bootcamp.

Standout features
  • Free community plan with 50+ courses
  • Free 90-minute PL-300 session
  • 9-hour on-demand PL-300 course
  • Live virtual bootcamp
+Pros
  • ✓The best free material from a training company
  • ✓Practical exam advice, including on the open-book trap
  • ✓A live option when videos aren't enough
−Cons
  • ✗Bootcamp length and inclusions not stated
  • ✗The on-demand course price isn't displayed
  • ✗Highest seat price in this ranking
Verdict

Use the free plan without hesitation. Pay for the bootcamp only once you have the schedule and inclusions in writing.

Get your Power BI certification, step by step

From deciding to badge, here's the order we recommend to a working professional aiming for the PL-300, including the free resources that are sometimes enough and the point where a paid course starts to make sense.

01

Make sure the PL-300 is the certification you need

First

The PL-300 is an associate-level exam for people who build reports and data models in Power BI. If you only want a lighter first credential, PL-900 (Microsoft's Power Platform fundamentals exam, $99 in the US) is the entry-level option. If a job post or a client asks for "Power BI certification", they mean the PL-300. A Coursera or DataCamp certificate on its own won't tick that box. After the PL-300, data profiles often move on to DP-600, the Fabric Analytics Engineer certification.

02

Check your Power Query and DAX level

Free

Microsoft sets no formal prerequisite, but it expects you to be proficient in Power Query (the tool that cleans and reshapes data) and DAX. Take the free official practice assessment before you pay for anything. If half the questions stump you, a structured course is worth it. If you pass comfortably, the free path plus practice on the exam format is often enough.

Work through the free Microsoft Learn paths

Official

The official PL-300T00 course runs three days with a trainer, but Microsoft also publishes it as five free self-paced learning paths: get started, prepare data, model data, build visuals and reports, manage and secure. Microsoft's own estimate is about 72 hours. There's a hidden bonus: Microsoft Learn is the site you can open during the exam, so knowing your way around it pays off on the day.

04

Choose a course and get it employer-sponsored

Funding

Most PL-300 training is employer-sponsored: your company pays the seat or the subscription as part of its training budget. Make the case with numbers. Three days at New Horizons cost $1,895 per seat plus a $165 exam, while a DataCamp or Coursera subscription with a 50% voucher brings the exam down to $82.50. No continuing education units (CEU) are documented for the PL-300, so don't promise them to HR. Coursera's program does carry an ACE credit recommendation.

Practice on the real exam format

Key

The exam mixes multiple choice, drag-and-drop, hot area questions and case studies. Use the free practice assessment, the exam sandbox (a demo of the exam interface) and the Exam Readiness Zone videos. If you want a paid test, MeasureUp ($119 for the PL-300 test, one year of access) is the one practitioners rate most useful. Avoid dump sites that sell "real exam questions": their answers are often wrong, and using them breaks the candidate agreement you sign with Microsoft.

Book with your personal Microsoft account

Trap

You book through Pearson VUE, at a test center or online from home, for $165 in the US. Use a personal Microsoft account, not your work one. Leave the company and you'd lose your exam history, and candidates whose certification sat on a deleted account have struggled to renew it. If your account gets blocked when you try to book, for example after several declined payments, go through Microsoft's certification support rather than retrying.

Exam day: 100 minutes, open book, no time to spare

100 min

You get 100 minutes for roughly 40 to 60 questions, and you need 700 out of 1,000, a scaled score rather than a percentage. You can open Microsoft Learn during the exam, but with no extra time: Microsoft says that looking up every question means you won't finish, and that's by design. There's a built-in 5-minute break, and you can't go back to questions you saw before it. Wrong answers cost nothing, so answer everything.

Renew every year, for free

Yearly

The certification is valid for 12 months. Six months before it expires, Microsoft opens a free online renewal assessment: unproctored, open book, shorter than the exam, with unlimited attempts. Passing extends you by a year. Forget it and the certification expires, which means paying for and passing the full exam again. If you fail the exam itself, you can retry after 24 hours, then every 14 days, up to five times in 12 months, and every attempt is paid.

Buyer's guide

How to spot a Power BI certification that actually counts

Course pages use "certification" for everything from a Microsoft exam to a completion badge. Six checks keep you from paying for one while thinking you're buying the other.

Certification or certificate?

Ask who issues it and how. A certification comes from a proctored exam run independently of the course: for Power BI, that's Microsoft's PL-300 at Pearson VUE. A Professional Certificate, a statement of accomplishment or a certificate of completion comes from whoever sold you the course. Both belong on a résumé, but only one is verified by Microsoft.

Find the exam code

A real certification course names its exam. If a page says "Power BI certification" and never writes PL-300, ask which exam it prepares you for and which voucher it includes. Courses still built for the retired DA-100 exam are still around on some platforms, so check the outline matches today's four domains.

Add the exam to the price

Most live courses leave the exam out: budget $165 per person in the US. Graduate School USA includes it with a free retake. Coursera and DataCamp cut it to $82.50 with their 50% vouchers. Be careful with "free voucher" promises on social media: the ones we looked into were disputed in their own comments, and we found no standing PL-300 discount in 2026 beyond those two vouchers.

Check the outline is current

Some top-ranking course pages still quote a 70% passing score and the old "deploy and maintain" domain: the PL-300 is scored on a 700/1,000 scale and its fourth domain is now "manage and secure". The exam now covers Direct Lake, calculation groups, visual calculations, Copilot and sensitivity labels. An outline that never mentions Fabric or Copilot was probably written for an older version. New Horizons and the Microsoft Learn paths already include them.

Read the fine print on guarantees

A course retake is not an exam retake. ONLC lets you sit the class again within 12 months, while Graduate School USA covers a second exam attempt. Pearson VUE also sells Exam Replay, a voucher bundled with one retake of the same exam. Know which one you're paying for.

Training a whole team

For a group, a private class (New Horizons) or a shared subscription (DataCamp, LinkedIn Learning) beats a stack of individual seats. To see where the certification fits in a full career path, read our guide on how to become a data analyst, and if your team is still weighing the tool itself, our Power BI alternatives.
  • Confirm the course names the PL-300 exam and today's four skill domains
  • Ask whether the voucher is included, and if not, add $165 per person
  • Take Microsoft's free practice assessment before paying for a course
  • Check whether a "guarantee" covers the course or the exam
  • Book the exam with a personal Microsoft account
  • Stay away from dump sites, whatever their ranking on Google
  • Put your renewal date in your calendar the day you pass
FAQ · 8 questions

Power BI certification · FAQ

  • How much does Power BI certification cost?

The PL-300 exam costs $165 in the US. Microsoft sets the price by the country where you take the exam: 140 USD in Canada, £106 in the UK and $99 in Mexico and most of Latin America. Preparation ranges from free (Microsoft Learn) to about $1,900 for a three-day live class. Two ways to pay less: finish the Coursera or DataCamp path for a 50% voucher, which brings the exam to $82.50, and remember that the yearly renewal costs nothing.

  • How long does it take to get Power BI certified?

From a few weeks to about five months, depending on where you start. The official class lasts three days, Microsoft estimates its free learning paths at about 72 hours, DataCamp's track at about 50 hours, and Coursera's full program at about five months at 10 hours a week. If you already use Power Query and DAX every day, the free paths plus practice on the exam format are often enough. Starting from zero, plan for the longer programs.

  • Is the Power BI certification worth it?

It depends on what you need to prove. The PL-300 is the only Power BI credential Microsoft issues, so it's the one a job post or a client means when they ask for certification. It costs $165 and stays current thanks to a free yearly renewal. We found no reliable data on what it does to salaries or hiring, so be wary of pages that promise a number. Its real value is a verified, comparable proof of skills, especially for consultants and for managers who need to show a team is qualified.

  • Can you get a Power BI certification for free?

No. The PL-300 exam is paid, and that's the only Power BI certification. What is free: all of Microsoft's official preparation (learning paths, practice assessment, exam sandbox, Exam Readiness Zone videos), Pragmatic Works' community plan, starting the Coursera program for free, and the yearly renewal once you're certified. A "free Power BI certificate" from a course platform is a certificate of completion. Promises of a free exam voucher circulate regularly on social media, and the ones we looked into didn't hold up.

  • How many questions are on the PL-300 exam, and how hard is it?

Most Microsoft exams have 40 to 60 questions, and Microsoft doesn't fix an exact number for the PL-300. You get 100 minutes and need 700 out of 1,000, a scaled score, not 70%. Expect at least one case study and some questions you can't return to. The four domains weigh almost equally: prepare data, model data, visualize and analyze (25 to 30% each), and manage and secure Power BI (15 to 20%). Open-book access to Microsoft Learn helps, but the clock keeps running.

  • Is a Coursera or DataCamp certificate the same as the Microsoft certification?

No. Coursera's Professional Certificate and DataCamp's statement of accomplishment prove you finished a learning path. Only passing the PL-300 earns you Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate. The two work well together, though: both programs end with a 50% PL-300 voucher, so the course pays back half the exam. On your résumé, list them separately and write the exam code next to the Microsoft one.

  • Will your employer pay for the PL-300?

Often, yes, and it's the most common route. Present it as a training request with the full cost: course or subscription, plus $165 for the exam. For a team, a private class (New Horizons offers private groups) or LinkedIn Learning licenses the company already owns cost less per head than individual seats. Don't promise continuing education units (CEU): none are documented for the PL-300. If your employer prefers academic credit, Coursera's program carries an ACE credit recommendation.

  • What happens if you fail the PL-300 or forget to renew?

If you fail, you can retake the exam after 24 hours, then every 14 days, up to five attempts in 12 months, and each one is paid. To protect yourself, Graduate School USA includes a free retake, and Pearson VUE sells Exam Replay (a voucher plus one retake). If you forget to renew, the certification expires and you have to pass and pay for the full exam again. The free renewal window opens six months before the expiry date.
