Free AI Courses: the 10 Best in 2026, and What “Free” Really Gets You

We compared the free AI courses from Anthropic, Harvard, OpenAI, Microsoft, Google, IBM, HubSpot and more: what's truly free, what costs money at the certificate step, and which one fits your role.

The short answer. The best free AI course with a free certificate is Anthropic's AI Fluency: 3 to 4 hours, a method that works with any assistant, and a certificate of completion at no cost. If you code, Harvard's CS50 AI gives a free CS50 certificate for real projects. Your team already lives in ChatGPT? OpenAI Academy.

By profile. On Microsoft 365, the free Microsoft Learn path Draft, analyze, and present with Microsoft Copilot covers Copilot app by app. For a free university certificate on AI in business, the University of Maryland's Smith School. For no-code foundations, Elements of AI; for a verifiable badge, IBM SkillsBuild; for marketers, HubSpot Academy; for agent builders, Hugging Face. Google AI Essentials is no longer free (Coursera's FAQ now says you can't take it for free), so it's not in the ranking: you'll find it in the table below as a paid option.

The biggest trap is the fake free course. Since 2025, auditing on Coursera is no longer a given, and many “free AI courses” lists still haven't caught up. Below you'll find a table of what each course really includes, our full reviews, 8 tips to get the most out of a free course, and the signals that tell you when to pay. Choosing the tool itself? Read our reviews of Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini.

What “free” really covers

What each free AI course actually gives you

The last line of each card tells you where the free part ends. Before you read, keep these five cases in mind:

  • Fully free: the course and the proof of completion (certificate or badge) at no cost.
  • Free course, no proof: the content is open, but nothing certifies you finished.
  • Free course, paid certificate: the content is open, the certificate costs money.
  • Free trial: everything is open for a few days, then a subscription kicks in. That's a paid course.
  • Free with conditions: free for a specific audience, or only through a specific entry link.

If you came here from a list of “actually free AI courses”, this table is the check: every card says whether the certificate is free too.

Terms read on each provider's official pages in 2026.

Best free AI course with a free certificate

Anthropic Academy · AI Fluency: Framework & Foundations

4.2/5

AI Fluency teaches a method, not a product. It's built around four skills: delegation (what to hand to the AI), description (how to ask), discernment (how to judge the answer) and diligence (owning what you do with it). Anthropic co-wrote it with two professors, Joseph Feller of University College Cork and Rick Dakan of Ringling College. Expect 12 lessons and 3 to 4 hours, then a final assessment that unlocks a free certificate of completion.

You only need a Skilljar account, not an Anthropic one. The course also runs on Coursera as a free three-hour beginner course, but the free certificate isn't spelled out there, so take it on Skilljar. The catalog holds 23 courses, including AI Fluency for Small Businesses, Claude 101, Building with the Claude API, Introduction to MCP (the Model Context Protocol, which connects an assistant to your tools), Introduction to agent skills and Deploying Claude Enterprise. Learners who went through the series describe all of it as completely free. For the assistant itself, see our Claude review.

Standout features
  • Free certificate of completion
  • 23 free courses in the catalog, agents and MCP included
  • Co-written with two university professors
+Pros
  • ✓A method you can reuse with ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot
  • ✓Free certificate, no Anthropic account required
  • ✓Free advanced tracks once you're done
−Cons
  • ✗A platform certificate, not a degree
  • ✗The product courses after it are Claude-specific
  • ✗Short: it won't replace hands-on practice
Verdict

The best free AI course for most professionals: short, tool-agnostic, and the certificate really costs nothing.

2
Best free AI course with a university certificate, for builders

Harvard · CS50's Introduction to Artificial Intelligence with Python

4.1/5

Harvard's CS50 AI is the reference technical course, and Harvard puts it plainly: anyone can take the course for free. Seven weeks, one lecture and one project per week, self-paced: search, knowledge, uncertainty, optimization, learning, neural networks and language. edX estimates 10 to 30 hours a week, and more than 1.6 million people have enrolled there.

The proof is the strong point. You earn a free CS50 certificate by scoring at least 70% on each project, graded automatically once you submit with an edX account. On edX you can also audit at no cost, with time-limited access and no certificate, or pay $299 for a verified certificate. The catch is the entry bar: Harvard asks for CS50x or at least a year of Python. It's not an office-productivity course.

Standout features
  • Free CS50 certificate from Harvard
  • Seven real projects, graded automatically
  • More than 1.6 million enrolled on edX
+Pros
  • ✓Real depth: you build the systems, you don't just use them
  • ✓A free certificate with a Harvard name on it
  • ✓Self-paced, with no deadline pressure
−Cons
  • ✗Requires Python or CS50x first
  • ✗70 to 210 hours in total
  • ✗Nothing on everyday AI tools for office work
Verdict

The best free course on this page if you code. For non-technical staff, AI Fluency is the right start.

3
Best free AI course for teams on ChatGPT

OpenAI · OpenAI Academy

4.0/5

The ChatGPT maker's academy is free, and signing in with a ChatGPT account (a free one is enough) unlocks part of the content. It's now organized in tracks: Apply AI at Work, Build with AI, Lead AI Adoption and Teach and Learn with AI. The foundation courses are aimed at people new to AI and at professionals who want AI for recurring workplace tasks, with a more advanced course on agents and workflows. Expect a few hours for the core courses, a final assessment, then a free certificate of completion.

Don't confuse it with an OpenAI Certification. The exam-based certifications (Credly badges, tasks done inside ChatGPT) are only open as pilots through employers, with no public price. For the tool itself, see our ChatGPT review.

Standout features
  • Free certificate of completion
  • A track built for leading AI adoption in a team
+Pros
  • ✓Closest to how ChatGPT actually works today
  • ✓A dedicated track for managers rolling AI out
  • ✓Free from start to finish
−Cons
  • ✗One tool only
  • ✗The official OpenAI Certification isn't open to individuals
  • ✗Durations aren't shown on the track pages
Verdict

A smart choice if your company already standardized on ChatGPT. If not, AI Fluency teaches a method that works everywhere.

Best free AI course for Microsoft 365 teams

Microsoft Learn · Draft, analyze, and present with Microsoft Copilot

3.9/5

This is the free answer for companies on Microsoft 365: Copilot, app by app. The path has 7 modules, about 4 hours 20 minutes in total: getting ready to work with Copilot (22 min), Copilot Chat (39), PowerPoint (49), Word (35), Teams (43), Excel (38) and Outlook (32). The first module covers grounding in your organization's data, agents, enterprise data protection, sensitivity labels and a four-part prompt framework. Later modules feature agents such as Idea Coach in PowerPoint, Writing Coach in Word and Outlook, Facilitator in Teams and Analyst in Excel.

It's rated intermediate and expects basic hands-on experience with Microsoft 365. The path is free with a Microsoft account, which saves your progress; you earn a badge per module and a trophy for the path, not a certificate. The page doesn't say whether a Copilot license is required, so check your company has access before you practice on your own files. The same content exists as a one-day instructor-led course (MS-4018-A) through Microsoft training partners, at a price they set.

Standout features
  • Copilot in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams
  • Updated in 2026, agents included
  • One-day instructor-led version through Microsoft partners
+Pros
  • ✓The only free course here that matches a Microsoft 365 workday
  • ✓About 4 hours 20 minutes: half a day
  • ✓Module badges make team progress easy to track
−Cons
  • ✗Badges and a trophy, no certificate
  • ✗Intermediate level
  • ✗The page doesn't say whether you need a Copilot license
Verdict

The best free choice if your company runs on Microsoft 365. Start with AI Fluency if your team has never written a prompt.

Best free university certificate on AI in business

University of Maryland Smith School · Free Online Certificate in Artificial Intelligence and Career Empowerment

3.9/5

The Robert H. Smith School of Business calls this program completely free, and it ends with a certificate of completion from the school. It runs in 10 modules, completely self-paced, and takes approximately 25 hours. Part one, AI in Business, covers AI literacy, marketing, organizations, supply chain, responsible AI and financial services. Part two, Career Empowerment, covers job search, negotiation and related skills.

The school aims it at early- to mid-career professionals moving into the private sector or changing direction, which explains the second half. If you're not changing jobs, focus on part one. Hands-on tool practice is light.

Standout features
  • Certificate from a business school, free
  • AI explained function by function
  • Completely self-paced
+Pros
  • ✓A free university certificate focused on AI in the enterprise
  • ✓Self-paced, no deadline pressure
  • ✓Covers responsible AI and financial services, rare in free courses
−Cons
  • ✗Half the program is about career moves, not AI
  • ✗Little hands-on tool practice
  • ✗About 25 hours is a real commitment
Verdict

A strong free credential for a manager who wants AI framed by business function. Skip part two if you're not changing direction.

Best free no-code foundations course

University of Helsinki · Elements of AI

3.9/5

Built by the University of Helsinki and MinnaLearn, Elements of AI has reached over 2 million people and is one of the most recognized free AI courses in Europe. Introduction to AI covers what AI is, problem solving, probability, machine learning, neural networks and the implications for society, with no programming. Time estimates vary a lot; plan on about 30 hours. Partner universities grant 2 ECTS credits for it, and learners on developer forums describe the no-code part as suitable for executives.

The university certificate is free if you complete 90% of the exercises with 50% correct answers. Some exercises are peer-graded, and not reviewing enough of your peers' answers is the top reason certificates get stuck. Part two, Building AI, requires Python, and its shareable certificate is paid.

Standout features
  • University of Helsinki certificate, free
  • 2 ECTS credits through partner universities
  • No coding in part one
+Pros
  • ✓Real understanding, not a skim
  • ✓Free university certificate
  • ✓Works for non-technical leaders
−Cons
  • ✗About 30 hours, one of the longest courses here
  • ✗Theoretical: nothing on today's generative AI tools
  • ✗Peer grading can delay the certificate
Verdict

The best free foundations course if you'll commit around 30 hours. For quick wins at work, pair it with a tool course.

Best free verifiable AI badge

IBM SkillsBuild · Artificial Intelligence Fundamentals

3.8/5

IBM's AI Fundamentals track spans six courses and about 10 hours, covering machine learning, natural language processing and AI ethics. To earn the badge you pass the courses, quizzes, final assessments and simulations; the Credly listing shows it at no cost, at intermediate level. Learners get a certificate of completion and a verified Credly badge backed by IBM.

One practical detail: register on SkillsBuild with the same email address you use on Credly, or the badge won't land in your account. The content leans on IBM's own tools such as Watson, with less on the generative AI assistants you use every day.

Standout features
  • Verified Credly badge, free
  • Covers ML, NLP and ethics
  • Simulations, not just videos
+Pros
  • ✓A badge employers can verify in one click
  • ✓Broader than most free intro courses
  • ✓No subscription, no trial
−Cons
  • ✗IBM-centric examples
  • ✗Little on everyday generative AI tools
  • ✗Badge issues if your emails don't match
Verdict

The best free proof you can verify. Pair it with a hands-on course on the tool you'll actually use.

8
Best free course for building AI agents

Hugging Face · AI Agents Course

3.8/5

Hugging Face calls this course completely free, certificates included. You earn a Fundamentals certificate after unit 1, then a certificate of completion after a use-case assignment and the final challenge, with no deadline. Each chapter is designed for a week at 3 to 4 hours.

It's one of the most technical courses here: you need Python and a basic grasp of large language models (LLMs). For a non-developer, it's the wrong starting point. For a growth or ops team that wants to automate real work with agents, it's the best free agent course we found. See also our Hugging Face review.

Standout features
  • Two free certificates
  • No deadline
  • Hands-on agent building
+Pros
  • ✓Goes far deeper than any intro course
  • ✓Free certificates at two levels
  • ✓Self-paced with a weekly rhythm
−Cons
  • ✗Requires Python and LLM basics
  • ✗Not for non-technical staff
  • ✗Takes several weeks
Verdict

The best free next step after CS50 AI for anyone who wants to ship agents.

Best short generative AI path from Microsoft and LinkedIn

Microsoft · LinkedIn · Career Essentials in Generative AI

3.6/5

Five short courses, about 4 hours in total, ending with a certificate of completion: Generative AI: From Prompts to Partnership (54 min), Everyday AI Concepts (49 min), Your Top AI Questions Answered (49 min), Learning Microsoft 365 Copilot for Work (54 min) and Ethics in the Age of Generative AI (45 min). LinkedIn warns that the path gets updated, which can add courses for anyone who hasn't finished it.

The free part needs care. LinkedIn's Skills for Jobs page says all its courses are free through 2027 and points to a specific link. Logged out, though, the path page only shows a “Join now” button leading to subscriptions. Use the Skills for Jobs link, and check at sign-up that no subscription is required before you enter a card.

Standout features
  • Certificate of completion
  • Co-produced by Microsoft and LinkedIn
  • Includes a course on Microsoft 365 Copilot for work
+Pros
  • ✓Short enough to roll out to a whole team
  • ✓Covers ethics as well as everyday use
  • ✓One course on Microsoft 365 Copilot
−Cons
  • ✗Free only through one entry link
  • ✗No exam: a completion certificate only
  • ✗The path can change while you're taking it
Verdict

A good shared introduction, as long as you sign up through the right link. For Copilot in depth, take the Microsoft Learn path.

Best free AI course for marketers

HubSpot Academy · AI for Marketing Course

3.5/5

HubSpot Academy, which calls itself 100% free and online, runs a free AI for Marketing course: 6 lessons, 15 videos and 4 quizzes, for 2 hours 49 minutes. It targets small business owners and marketing professionals, and you only need a free HubSpot Academy account.

Know one thing before you start: it's a standard course, not a certification. In HubSpot's community, a learner who finished the videos and quizzes expected a certificate and got none; only courses marked “Certification” issue one. Expect examples built around HubSpot's own tools.

Standout features
  • 2 hours 49 minutes
  • 6 lessons, 15 videos, 4 quizzes
  • Built for marketers and small business owners
+Pros
  • ✓Marketing use cases, not generic AI theory
  • ✓Short and free, no trial
  • ✓From a vendor marketers already know
−Cons
  • ✗No certificate
  • ✗HubSpot-centered examples
  • ✗Marketing only
Verdict

A useful afternoon for a marketing team. Add AI Fluency if you also want a free certificate.

8 tips to avoid paying by mistake and finish with proof

These tips come from official pages, learner reviews and our comparison. They prevent the three mistakes we see everywhere: the trial that bills you, the certificate that never arrives, and the course that doesn't help at work.

01

Read the enrollment page, not the landing page

Coursera

On Coursera, the landing page rarely tells you what's free. The options show up when you enroll: “Audit”, “Full Course, No Certificate”, or only a trial. Since 2025, DeepLearning.AI courses use a preview mode where just the first week is open, and Coursera's FAQ for Google AI Essentials now says it can't be taken for free. Find the free option before you start, not in week three.

Where to look
The enroll button
Red flag
First week only
02

If they ask for your card, it's a trial

Trap

A truly free course never asks for payment details. If it does, it's a trial and the subscription will start at the end. Google AI Essentials gives you 7 days before $49 a month in the US, and DeepLearning.AI Pro is a paid plan whose trial and refund terms you should read before entering a card. Put the trial end date in your calendar the day you sign up. Some learners say they cancelled right away and kept access; others say they lost it immediately, so don't count on the first outcome.

Want the Coursera certificate? Apply for financial aid first

Coursera

Coursera reviews financial aid applications course by course, and it's the free route Coursera itself names for Google AI Essentials. Guides put the processing time at around two weeks, and it doesn't apply to Coursera Plus. Apply before starting a trial, and use the waiting time on a fully free course like AI Fluency.

Small business? Go through the admin route

Teams

Google's free AI Professional Certificate for eligible US small businesses (up to 500 employees) goes through one company admin on Coursera for Business, with approval in 5 to 7 business days. Don't let employees sign up on their own: they'll land on the paid subscription. It's a temporary offer, so check it's still running before you plan around it.

Pair a method course with a tool course

Method

No free course does everything. The pairing that covers most needs: AI Fluency for the method (3 to 4 hours, free certificate), then the free course for the tool your company uses. Microsoft 365: the Microsoft Learn path Draft, analyze, and present with Microsoft Copilot (7 modules, about 4 hours 20 minutes). ChatGPT: OpenAI Academy. Elements of AI: review your peers to unlock the certificate

Elements of AI

The Elements of AI certificate needs 90% of exercises done and 50% correct. The top reason it gets stuck isn't difficulty: it's not giving enough feedback on peer-graded exercises, numbers 4, 15, 23, 24 and 25. Do those reviews as you go. The same logic applies to CS50 AI: the free certificate needs at least 70% on every project, so don't skip one.

Career

On developer forums, the verdict on free course certificates is blunt: employers don't value them a lot on their own, and real experience plus a portfolio comes first. Turn each course into one small, visible result: a prompt library for your team, a Copilot-built report, a CS50 project, an agent from the Hugging Face course. That's what you'll talk about in a review or an interview.

When to pay for AI training

Stay free or pay: 6 signals

01You want to understand AI and write good prompts in a mainstream tool
→ Stay on free courses

AI Fluency plus the free course for your tool covers it in under ten hours, at no cost.

02You need proof on LinkedIn without spending
→ Stay on free courses

Anthropic, Harvard CS50, OpenAI Academy, IBM, UMD, Elements of AI and Hugging Face all give a free certificate or badge.

03Your whole team is on Microsoft 365
→ Stay on free courses

The free Microsoft Learn Copilot path covers Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams, with a badge per module to track progress.

04You want the Google certificate specifically
→ Pay for training

Google AI Essentials is no longer free: it needs the Coursera subscription, unless you get financial aid or your company qualifies for the small business offer.

05You need an exam-based certification (AWS, Microsoft, Google Cloud)
→ Pay for training

The free learning paths prepare you, but the exams themselves are paid. Ask whether it can be employer-sponsored, and compare AI training for business teams.

06AI has to work on your own data and tools, with an instructor
→ Pay for training

Free courses stay generic. Training built around your use cases costs money and fits an employer-sponsored budget: see our ranking of AI training for business teams.

FAQ

Free AI courses: frequently asked questions

  • Are there free AI courses with a certificate?
Yes, seven courses on this page give a certificate or badge at no cost: Anthropic's AI Fluency, Harvard's CS50 AI, OpenAI Academy, the University of Maryland's Smith School program, Elements of AI, IBM SkillsBuild AI Fundamentals and the Hugging Face Agents Course. Microsoft Learn gives badges, HubSpot's AI course gives none, and Google AI Essentials is no longer free.
  • Is Google AI Essentials free?
No. Coursera's FAQ now says you cannot take this course for free: the content and the certificate come with the subscription, $49 a month in the US and Canada after a 7-day free trial, possibly less elsewhere. The free route is Coursera financial aid. Eligible US small businesses can also get the broader Google AI Professional Certificate free through a temporary offer managed by a company admin.
  • Does Google have free AI courses?
Yes, but not Google AI Essentials. Google Cloud Skills Boost offers a non-technical Introduction to Generative AI path with a free Generative AI Fundamentals badge (three courses plus a quiz). Google's own learning hub mixes paid and free resources, so check each listing for a no-charge label before you enroll.
  • Does Microsoft offer free AI courses?
Yes. Microsoft Learn modules and learning paths are free; only the certification exams are paid. For business users, the path Draft, analyze, and present with Microsoft Copilot covers Copilot in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams and Copilot Chat in about 4 hours 20 minutes, with badges but no certificate. Microsoft and LinkedIn also co-produce Career Essentials in Generative AI, free through LinkedIn's Skills for Jobs link.
  • Are DeepLearning.AI courses free?
Not fully anymore. On Coursera, DeepLearning.AI courses like AI For Everyone moved to a preview mode where only the first week is open. On deeplearning.ai, short-course videos are free to watch, but labs, quizzes and certificates require the paid Pro plan. If you want the Coursera certificate, apply for financial aid.
  • Is there a free prompt engineering course?
Yes: AI Fluency is the best free one, since its “description” skill is prompt writing applied to any assistant, with a free certificate. The Microsoft Learn Copilot path teaches a four-part prompt framework inside Office apps. Vanderbilt's popular Prompt Engineering for ChatGPT on Coursera (about 18 hours) is not fully free: expect a trial and a subscription, unless you see a no-certificate option at enrollment.
  • How long does it take to learn AI with free courses?
From under 3 hours to well over 100, depending on the goal. HubSpot's course takes 2 hours 49 minutes, AI Fluency 3 to 4 hours, the Microsoft Copilot path about 4 hours 20, IBM AI Fundamentals about 10, the UMD program about 25, Elements of AI around 30, and CS50 AI seven weeks at 10 to 30 hours a week. To be comfortable at work, plan on a method course plus one tool course: under ten hours in total.
  • Are free AI certificates worth it to employers?
As supporting proof, yes; on their own, rarely. Learners on developer forums say employers don't weigh course certificates heavily and put real experience and a portfolio first. A free certificate shows initiative; pair it with one concrete project you can show, and it becomes a real talking point.
  • Can my employer pay for AI training?
Often, yes, and in the US there's a tax lever. Under Section 127, an employer's educational assistance program lets you receive up to $5,250 a year tax-free for 2025 and 2026, through a separate written plan, and the courses don't have to be job-related. Start with free courses to prove the need, then bring your manager a specific program with its cost per person and hours. To compare paid options, see our ranking of AI training for business teams.
