Which AI resume builder should you use as a recent grad?

Your resume is almost empty. The right tool helps you fill it with facts, not fluff.

A new grad resume has a problem nobody else's has: it is almost empty. One summer internship, a capstone project, a campus job. Ask an AI to "write a recent graduate resume" and it fills the gap with stock phrases, or worse, with skills you do not have.

The short answer: start with Kickresume. Its free plan downloads without limits, and students with an ISIC, ITIC or UNiDAYS card get Premium for up to 180 days. Pick Rezi if you want AI writing at $0, with unlimited cover letters. Novoresume for a free one-page resume with no card. Teal or Huntr once you are sending dozens of internship applications and need to track them.

Before you pay for anything, check one thing: whether your school gives you Handshake's AI resume assistant. We cover it below, outside the ranking.

Scores use the same five weighted criteria as our other resume builder rankings. The order follows this page's main criterion: what you get for $0, all the way to the PDF. Official 2026 prices.

How we ranked

How we compared and ranked

Scores come from our main AI resume builder ranking, on the same five-criterion grid, and they do not change from page to page. The order follows a new grad's real question: what can you do for free, all the way to the PDF you send? That is why Rezi and Novoresume sit above Teal, despite slightly lower scores.

We compared official pricing pages, the exact limits of each free plan, the student offers each company publishes, and user reviews that talk about internships and first jobs. Huntr is scored on the same grid as in our job seeker ranking.

Enhancv is not ranked here: its free access lasts 7 days, which makes it a trial, not a free plan. Zety and Resume.io are left out for the same reason. Handshake's assistant is covered below without a score, since access depends on your school.

Best for students

Kickresume

4.1/5

Kickresume wins this page on two counts. First, the free plan lets you build and download as many resumes as you like, with 4 resume templates, 4 cover letter templates, a personal website and a bank of 20,000+ prewritten phrases. Second, it is the only company in this ranking with an official student offer.

That offer gives students and teachers up to 180 days of Premium for free, once you verify with an ISIC, ITIC or UNiDAYS card. Premium is where the AI Writer and the ATS checker live; neither is in the free plan. When the period ends, your account drops back to free and you keep every resume. For scale, two quarters of paid Premium would cost $108.

No student card? One reviewer complains about having to buy one just to get the discount. Kickresume's student page offers a workaround: send proof of enrollment to support. Try that before paying for anything.

The catch: without the student offer there is no AI, so you write everything yourself. And even with Premium, the AI only works with what you feed it. Give it an empty resume and you get an empty-sounding one back. List your projects and internships first, so the 180 days are not half wasted.

Standout features
  • Unlimited downloads on the free plan
  • Up to 180 days of free Premium for students
  • Your resumes stay when the offer ends
+Pros
  • ✓Most generous free plan for exports
  • ✓Only official student offer in this ranking
  • ✓14-day money-back guarantee
−Cons
  • ✗No AI on the free plan
  • ✗Discount requires an ISIC, ITIC or UNiDAYS card
  • ✗Only 4 resume templates free
Verdict

The best place for a student to start: unlimited free exports, plus the AI for up to 180 days with the right card. Prep your facts before you switch the offer on.

Best free AI writing

Rezi

3.9/5

Rezi has no individual student discount. Its only education offer is aimed at schools and career sites: $99 a month for 200 users. It still ranks second here because its free plan, which needs no card, includes the AI Resume Writer and unlimited AI cover letters. For a grad with zero budget, that is a lot.

The rest of the free plan is tight: 1 resume, 1 AI mock interview and 3 PDF downloads. That changes how you work. Finish your resume before you download it, because every fix after the fact burns a PDF.

Pro is $29 a month and Lifetime is $149 once. On a student budget, Lifetime only makes sense for a long search: five months of Pro come to $145, so Lifetime only gets cheaper from month six on. Paid plans carry a 30-day money-back guarantee.

The catch: 3 PDFs go fast if you make a version per application. If you want one resume per posting, build it in Kickresume and keep Rezi for letters.

Standout features
  • AI Resume Writer on the free plan
  • Unlimited AI cover letters, free
  • 30-day refund on paid plans
+Pros
  • ✓Real AI help at $0
  • ✓A cover letter for every application
  • ✓Built with ATS parsing in mind
−Cons
  • ✗Only 3 PDFs free
  • ✗No individual student discount
  • ✗One resume on the free plan
Verdict

The pick if you want AI help without paying. Draft carefully, download once, and use the unlimited letters for every internship that asks for one.

3
Best free one-page resume

Novoresume

3.7/5

A first resume almost always fits on one page, and that is exactly what Novoresume gives away. Basic needs no card: a one-page resume, 8 templates, 30 themes, 2 AI credits a month and an ATS checker.

One user put it simply: "I even managed to get an internship using the software." (Julian) That is the right use for this page: a short, plain format that suits an internship application.

One misunderstanding keeps coming up in reviews: users who thought downloads had gone paid. Novoresume replies that Basic stays free for a one-page resume. So the rule is easy: if your resume spills onto page two, cut it rather than shopping for a paid plan.

The catch: 2 AI credits a month will not rewrite a whole resume, and the free PDF carries a Novoresume logo. On a job board, nobody minds. On a resume you email to a hiring manager, a clean PDF looks better.

Standout features
  • Free one-page resume, no card
  • ATS checker included in Basic
  • 8 templates and 30 themes
+Pros
  • ✓Nothing to cancel
  • ✓One page suits a first resume
  • ✓Free readability check
−Cons
  • ✗2 AI credits a month
  • ✗Logo on the free PDF
  • ✗Free plan capped at one page
Verdict

The simplest free option for a one-page first resume, with an ATS check thrown in. For AI writing, pair it with Rezi or Kickresume.

4
Best free application tracker

Teal

4.0/5

Teal scores 4.0, second-best in this ranking, yet it sits fourth on this page. For writing a first resume, the free plan's AI is thin. Its real strength is elsewhere: a free job tracker with no cap on saved jobs.

Recruiting season turns into a full job search fast: dozens of companies, follow-ups, different resume versions. Past ten or so applications, keeping each posting next to the resume you sent, the contact and a follow-up date saves you from awkward repeats.

Teal+ costs $13 a week, $29 a month or $79 a quarter. On a student budget the weekly plan looks small, but four weeks add up to $52, almost twice the monthly price.

The catch: the useful AI sits in Teal+. Keep the free plan for tracking and write your resume somewhere else.

Standout features
  • Free tracker with no cap on jobs
  • Resume version, contact and follow-up per job
  • Teal+ monthly or quarterly
+Pros
  • ✓Free tracking worth it from 10 applications
  • ✓All resume versions in one place
  • ✓Clear pricing
−Cons
  • ✗Thin AI on the free plan
  • ✗Weekly plan gets expensive
  • ✗Not built for a first draft
Verdict

Not the tool to write your first resume, but the best free way to keep a recruiting season under control. Pair it with Kickresume or Rezi.

Best for internship pipelines

Huntr

3.7/5

Huntr comes at the problem from the tracking side. The free plan follows up to 100 jobs, includes a Chrome extension to save postings, 2 resumes tailored to a job post and a basic resume-to-job match.

For a student, 100 tracked jobs covers a whole recruiting season. The 2 tailored resumes are the real limit: if you tailor every application, you will hit the wall quickly.

Pro costs $40 a month, $90 every three months or $160 every six months. That is the steepest monthly price on this page, so on a tight budget Huntr makes sense mostly on its free plan.

The catch: AI writing and ATS checks stay basic for free. Write your resume in Kickresume or Rezi, then use Huntr or Teal to track where it went.

Standout features
  • Tracks up to 100 jobs for free
  • Chrome extension to save postings
  • 2 tailored resumes on the free plan
+Pros
  • ✓Free plan sized for a recruiting season
  • ✓Tracking and tailoring together
  • ✓Clear plan rhythms
−Cons
  • ✗Only 2 tailored resumes free
  • ✗Pro at $40/month is the priciest monthly here
  • ✗Basic ATS match on free
Verdict

A solid free tracker if you like a pipeline view of your search. Teal's free tracker has no job cap, so pick whichever layout you prefer.

Three free options to check before you pay

These are not scored: they are not AI resume builders in the same sense as the five above, and access depends on your school or your plans. They cost nothing, though, and can beat a subscription for a first resume.

Handshake's AI resume assistant: check if your school has it

Handshake offers an AI resume tool for logged-in student accounts. You upload your resume as a PDF or Word file of up to 1 MB, get an improved version and refine it in a chat. It is in beta and depends on your school: if the optimize option is missing from your account, your school does not have access.

Europass, if you are heading to Europe

Studying abroad or interning in Europe? Europass is the European Commission's free CV service, available in 31 languages. You create a profile, then build a CV and cover letter in the European format. The official pages mention no AI, so write your lines elsewhere and lay them out there.

Canva, for layout only

Canva's free plan is enough to design a resume. Its AI is not built to write one, and its multi-column templates can confuse applicant tracking systems. Before paying for a plan, ask your school whether it provides Canva access.
  • List your projects, internships and campus jobs before opening any tool, with one concrete result each.
  • Check whether you have an ISIC, ITIC or UNiDAYS card before paying for Kickresume.
  • Look in your Handshake account for the resume optimize option.
  • Finish your resume before downloading from Rezi: the free plan counts 3 PDFs.
  • If you pay for a month, put the renewal date in your calendar that same day.
The no-experience resume

Filling an empty resume with AI, without making things up

With no experience, AI tends to fill the gap with generic filler. Here is how to give it real material, step by step, based on official guidance on AI in job searching and what new grads report.

01

Take stock of what you actually did

Before the tool

Capstone, internship, campus job, club role, research, part-time work: write it all down. For each one, note the tool you used, what you delivered, how long it took and one result. An internship where you rebuilt a team's tracking sheet is already a resume line. AI cannot guess these facts for you.

Write down
Tool, deliverable, duration, result
02

Give the AI facts, not a vague prompt

With AI

"Write me a new grad resume" gets you a resume anyone could have. Paste one experience at a time with your rough notes, and ask for three bullets that start with an action verb. You stay in control of every word, and the AI only works on what you gave it.

Method
One experience at a time
03

Give projects the weight of a job

No experience

With no work history, a Projects section placed right under Education does the job of an Experience section. Kickresume's student page gives the same advice: lead with education, projects and transferable skills. A well-described project (the problem, what you did, the result) beats a job with no detail.

Suggested order
Education, projects, internships
04

Cut anything you cannot explain out loud

Before you send

Official guidance on AI in job searching is clear: check that the tool does not add skills you do not have, and do not hand it the whole job. Read every line and ask yourself whether you could give an example in an interview. For an internship or a first job, the recruiter will ask.

Test
One example per line
05

Rewrite the first draft in your own words

Style

New grads keep reporting the same thing: AI is useful for a first draft, but a resume it rewrote end to end sounds robotic. Keep the structure it suggests, swap the stock phrases for your facts, then read it out loud.

Keep
The structure, not the phrases
06

Fit one page, then check readability

Format

One page is enough for a first resume, and it is the limit of Novoresume's free plan. Pick a single-column template: multi-column layouts read worse in applicant tracking systems. Before sending, run it through the ATS checker included in Novoresume's Basic plan.

Format
One page, one column
FAQ · 8 questions

AI resume builder for recent graduates · FAQ

  • What is the best free AI resume builder for college students?
Kickresume if you have an ISIC, ITIC or UNiDAYS card: the free plan downloads without limits and the card unlocks up to 180 days of Premium, AI included. Without a card, Rezi gives you AI writing on its free plan, with only 3 PDFs. Novoresume covers a clean one-page resume with no card at all.
  • How do I write a resume with no experience using AI?
Feed it facts, not a prompt like "make me a grad resume". List your projects, internships, campus jobs and clubs with the tool you used, how long it took and one result, then ask the AI to shape one entry at a time. It formats what you give it well; it makes things up when you give it nothing.
  • Does Handshake have an AI resume builder?
Handshake offers an AI resume assistant for logged-in student accounts: you upload a PDF or Word file of up to 1 MB and get an improved version plus a chat to refine it. It depends on your school. If the optimize option does not show up, your school does not have access.
  • How do students get Kickresume Premium for free?
Verify your status with an ISIC, ITIC or UNiDAYS card through Kickresume's student offer and you get up to 180 days of Premium. Without a card, the student page says you can send proof of enrollment to support instead. When the period ends, your account goes back to free and your resumes stay.
  • Should a new grad resume be one page?
Yes, in almost every case. Without much experience, a second page fills up with repetition. It is also the limit of Novoresume's free plan. If you spill over, cut the lines you could not back up with an example in an interview.
  • Is Canva good for a student resume?
For layout only. Canva's free plan is open to anyone and is enough to design a resume, but its multi-column, graphic-heavy templates can trip up applicant tracking systems. Before paying for anything, ask your school whether it provides Canva access.
  • Can AI add skills I don't have to my resume?
Yes, and a nearly empty resume makes it worse: the tool fills gaps with generic skills or duties you never had. Read every line and cut anything you could not talk about for a few minutes in an interview. A short, true resume beats a long, padded one.
  • Should a recent grad pay for a resume builder?
Rarely. Kickresume and Novoresume go all the way to the PDF for free, Rezi gives you 3 free PDFs with AI, and Kickresume's student offer covers the AI for up to 180 days. If you do pay, pay for one month while you apply in bulk: $24 at Kickresume, $29 at Rezi or Teal.
