The best live chat software for ecommerce stores in 2026

Pick the chat that can see the order, then check what it costs in your busiest month.

Most store owners pick a live chat app on its feature list and get surprised by the invoice in November. The reason is simple: these tools bill in four different ways. Some charge per seat, some per workspace, some per conversation, some per ticket. The same app can be the cheapest option in March and the most expensive one over Black Friday.

So we ranked eight live chat tools for online stores on two things: whether the chat shows the customer's order (Shopify, WooCommerce, PrestaShop), and what you really pay at 50 conversations, at 300, and during a sales spike. Short answer: Shopify Inbox if you're a solo Shopify merchant, free. Crisp for a small team or a non-Shopify store, $45 a month for 4 seats. Gorgias once support becomes a full-time job. Tidio if you want AI that answers order questions.

Just want three names? Our top 3 ecommerce live chat picks gets straight to it. This page does the math.

Prices read on each vendor's official pricing page and Shopify App Store listing in 2026, before tax. iAdvize only publishes euro pricing. Crisp, Tidio and Zendesk keep the score from their Labs review; other tools carry an editorial score that is the same across all our pages.

How we ranked

How we compared and ranked

Look at the top results for this query and you'll notice a pattern: most are written by a chat vendor that ranks itself first. Few compare what the same conversation volume costs from one tool to the next, and almost none mention that an email or an Instagram DM can count against your chat quota.

We read every vendor's official pricing page, each app's Shopify App Store listing, and public merchant reviews, the angry ones in particular. A tool only made the list if two things checked out: the chat widget is on a plan with a public price, and we know what it does (or doesn't do) with order data. Then we priced three scenarios: a solo store, a 3-person team at 300 conversations, and a sales spike.

Scores use our usual five-criteria grid. Tools with a Labs review keep that review's score. Vendor claims about conversion lifts are left out: none of them can be verified.

Best free pick for Shopify

Shopify Inbox

3.9/5

Shopify Inbox is Shopify's own chat app, and it's free. While you chat, you see what the shopper viewed, what's in their cart, and their past orders. You can drop a product card, a photo or a discount code into the conversation. An AI agent handles simple questions, and the app runs in 21 languages.

The catch: it's built for one or two people. Merchants complain there's no search across past conversations, and the mobile app has quirks, like a send button that disappears. There's little in the way of routing between agents. It's Shopify-only, and eligibility depends on your store plan.

Our take: start here. Move to Crisp or Gorgias the day you need searchable history, email and chat in one inbox, or a second sales channel.

Standout features
  • Cart and order history in the chat
  • Send products and discount codes
  • 21 interface languages
+Pros
  • ✓Free, no conversation cap
  • ✓Installs from the Shopify admin
  • ✓AI agent included
−Cons
  • ✗Shopify only
  • ✗No search across conversations
  • ✗Thin on multi-agent features
Verdict

Unbeatable at $0 for a solo Shopify store. Outgrow it once the team or the channels multiply.

Best for most small teams

Crisp

4.2/5

Crisp does two things few chat tools combine. Its ecommerce connector (Shopify, WooCommerce, PrestaShop, Adobe Commerce) is on the free plan, so the customer profile shows their orders next to the chat. And it bills per workspace, not per conversation. Whether you get 80 or 800 chats in November, Mini stays at $45 a month.

For a 3-person store, that's the easiest bill to forecast: Mini gives you 4 seats, Essentials 10 for $95. AI is partly bundled as credits: $5 on Mini (about 90 automated conversations), $25 on Essentials (about 450). The free plan has no AI credits.

Crisp is a French company that hosts data in the EU and offers a signable data processing agreement, handy if you sell to European customers. Downsides from public reviews: advanced settings can be confusing and the plan lineup changes often. Our full Crisp review breaks down every plan.

Standout features
  • Order data on the free plan
  • Flat price per workspace
  • EU data hosting
+Pros
  • ✓Shopify, WooCommerce and PrestaShop
  • ✓4 seats for $45
  • ✓14-day trial, no card
−Cons
  • ✗No AI credits on free
  • ✗Advanced setup is fiddly
  • ✗Plans change often
Verdict

The default pick once you're not solo, or not only on Shopify. The only one that shows orders on three platforms at a flat price, from $0.

3
Best ecommerce helpdesk

Gorgias

3.7/5

Gorgias is a helpdesk built around Shopify, with chat as one channel. From any ticket, agents can see, edit or refund the order without opening the Shopify admin. When you're handling hundreds of requests a month, those saved clicks matter more than the sticker price.

Billing is per ticket, not per seat, and a ticket is anything that comes in: a chat, an email, an Instagram DM, a call. The $10 Starter plan includes chat, but only 50 tickets and 3 agents; Basic moves you to 300 tickets and unlimited agents for $60. Overage runs $40 per 100 tickets on Basic ($0.40 a ticket on Starter), $36 on Pro and Advanced. The AI Agent is billed on top: $1.00 per automated interaction ($0.90 billed yearly), $1.50 beyond your quota.

Merchant feedback is split. Fans say the AI takes real load off support and marketplaces stay well organized. Critics mention spam calls billed as tickets, a shaky mobile app, and a Q4 bill one merchant called steep.

Standout features
  • Refund and edit orders from the ticket
  • Chat, email and social in one inbox
  • No per-seat pricing
+Pros
  • ✓Add agents at no extra cost from Basic
  • ✓Shopify actions without switching tabs
  • ✓Trial without a card
−Cons
  • ✗Only 50 tickets on Starter
  • ✗Every email or call counts as a ticket
  • ✗AI billed on top of tickets
Verdict

The right tool when support turns into a department. Under 300 tickets a month, Crisp or Tidio cost less for similar day-to-day use.

4
Best AI for Shopify order questions

Tidio

3.6/5

Tidio shows Shopify orders next to the chat on every plan, free included. Its AI agent, Lyro, can take native Shopify actions like order tracking and cart recovery. If your goal is to automate "where's my order?", it's the most capable option at a small-store price.

Watch the billing model. Tidio counts conversations a human replies to, in tiers: 50 free, 100 on Starter, 250 and up on Growth. One good promo and you jump a tier. One reviewer said her plan went from 35 to 59 euros without warning. Lyro is extra, from $32.50 for 50 AI conversations. App Store pricing is different again ($29 and $59 a month).

One App Store review is worth reading before you switch AI on: a merchant uninstalled after Lyro gave a wrong status and destination for a custom order. Limit what the AI can say about orders. Tier details are on our Tidio pricing page.

Standout features
  • Shopify orders in the chat on free
  • Lyro takes Shopify actions
  • 10 seats on free
+Pros
  • ✓Useful free plan
  • ✓Most order-aware AI here
  • ✓Quick Shopify install
−Cons
  • ✗Conversation tiers jump during sales
  • ✗Lyro sold separately
  • ✗Bill grows with traffic
Verdict

A strong pick for automating order questions on Shopify. Check your conversation count every month.

5
Best budget pick for WooCommerce

Smartsupp

4.0/5

Smartsupp, a Czech vendor, connects to WooCommerce and PrestaShop in one click and shows store customer data in its dashboard. Plus covers 3 agents for $25 a month billed yearly, the cheapest paid option on this list at that team size.

Its AI, Mira, is a paid add-on billed per 100 conversations, and it can draw on a product catalog of up to 30,000 items to answer stock and sizing questions. The free plan is tight: 1 agent, 25 conversations a month, 14 days of history, and automated messages count toward the cap.

On Shopify, there's a catch. The app only installs the free plan; for a paid plan you paste the chat code into your theme by hand. Doable, but it's why we point Shopify merchants elsewhere first.

Standout features
  • One-click WooCommerce and PrestaShop
  • AI that reads your catalog
  • $25 for 3 agents
+Pros
  • ✓Cheapest paid plan at 3 agents
  • ✓Store customer data in the chat
  • ✓Simple setup
−Cons
  • ✗Free plan capped at 25 conversations
  • ✗Paid Shopify plans need manual code
  • ✗AI costs extra
Verdict

Best value on WooCommerce and PrestaShop. On Shopify, Inbox or Crisp are simpler.

Most complete for large support teams

Zendesk

3.6/5

Zendesk has the deepest toolset here: routing, macros, reporting, help center. Its Shopify app lets agents refund or cancel orders from inside Zendesk. Mind the plan, though: live chat comes with Suite Team at $55 per agent a month billed yearly. The cheaper Support Team plan doesn't include full chat.

For a store, the math is quick: 3 agents cost $165 a month, whatever the volume. That's the opposite of Gorgias or Tidio. Black Friday traffic doesn't change the bill; the seasonal hire you bring in does. AI includes 5 automated resolutions per agent per month on Team, then each resolution is billed.

For a store under 5 people, it's too heavy and too pricey. See our Zendesk review for plan details, or Zendesk alternatives for lighter options.

Standout features
  • Shopify refunds and cancellations from Zendesk
  • Advanced routing and reports
  • Flat cost regardless of volume
+Pros
  • ✓Richest support features
  • ✓Predictable bill during sales
  • ✓14-day trial
−Cons
  • ✗$165 for 3 agents
  • ✗No full chat on Support Team
  • ✗Slow to set up
Verdict

For a big support team that wants to measure everything. A small store mostly pays for features it won't use.

Best free chat with unlimited agents

tawk.to

3.9/5

tawk.to gives you chat, ticketing, a knowledge base and a basic CRM for $0, with no cap on agents or conversations. For a new WooCommerce store, it's the cheapest way in.

Two trade-offs. The "Powered by tawk.to" branding stays unless you pay $29 a month. And the official site shows no order view: your team keeps the store admin open in another tab. AI Assist starts at $29 a month. A twist you won't find elsewhere: tawk.to rents human agents at $1 an hour to cover the chat around the clock.

Users call it an excellent free chat program and grumble about a limited API. For a first, no-risk chat widget, it's hard to beat.

Standout features
  • Unlimited agents and conversations
  • Ticketing and help center included
  • Hire-an-agent option
+Pros
  • ✓Truly $0, no caps
  • ✓Fast to set up
  • ✓Works on any site
−Cons
  • ✗No order data
  • ✗Branding on the free plan
  • ✗Limited API
Verdict

The best $0 starting point. Once you want orders in the chat, move to Crisp or Smartsupp.

8
Conversational commerce for big retailers

iAdvize

3.8/5

iAdvize plays in a different league from the rest of this list. It targets large retailers that want to turn chat into guided selling, with AI and product experts. Chat conversations are hosted in the EU, in Frankfurt.

The entry price says it all: €290 a month for Essentials, €520 for Starter, €1,330 for Growth. No free plan, no self-serve trial. For a 3-person store, that's more than six times the cost of Crisp Mini.

It earns its spot for European retailers who want an EU vendor, EU data and hands-on onboarding. If you're a small team, skip it.

Standout features
  • European vendor
  • Chat hosted in the EU
  • Guided selling at scale
+Pros
  • ✓Vendor onboarding
  • ✓EU chat data
  • ✓Built for selling
−Cons
  • ✗From €290 a month
  • ✗No free plan
  • ✗Overkill for small stores
Verdict

Only for retailers with the volume and budget. Everyone else gets the essentials from Crisp for a fraction of the price.

The math

What you pay at your conversation volume

Four billing models live side by side: per seat (Zendesk), per workspace (Crisp, Smartsupp), per conversation (Tidio) and per ticket (Gorgias). Monthly, before tax, billed yearly where offered, AI not included.

01

Under 50 conversations, just you

$0

Five tools cost nothing: Shopify Inbox, tawk.to, Crisp (2 seats), Tidio (50 conversations) and Smartsupp (only 25). On Shopify, Inbox is the easy call. Elsewhere, Crisp is the only free plan that already shows orders. The cheapest useful paid plan is Smartsupp Solo at $17.

Pick
Inbox on Shopify, Crisp elsewhere
02

About 300 conversations, a team of three

$0 to $165

tawk.to stays at $0, without order data. Smartsupp Plus is $25, Crisp Mini $45. Tidio Growth starts at $49.17 for 250 conversations, so 300 pushes you up a tier. Gorgias Basic works out to $50 billed yearly for 300 tickets, but emails count too. Zendesk Suite Team comes to $165.

03

Black Friday triples your volume

The trap

With Gorgias and Tidio, the bill climbs with volume even if headcount doesn't: $40 per extra 100 tickets on Gorgias Basic, a higher conversation tier on Tidio. With Zendesk, volume changes nothing, but each seasonal hire adds $55. With Crisp and Smartsupp, nothing moves as long as you stay within your seats.

Turning on AI? Redo the math

Extra

AI is almost always billed on top. Gorgias: $1.00 per automated interaction, on top of the ticket. Tidio: Lyro from $32.50 per 50 conversations. Zendesk: 5 resolutions per agent included, then pay per resolution. Smartsupp: Mira billed per 100 conversations. Crisp bundles credits from Mini. One merchant put it bluntly: at $1.50 per AI conversation, he couldn't justify switching it on.

How to choose

Three questions before you install a chat

Answer them in order. They cut the list in half in five minutes.

How many conversations in your busiest month?

Not your average month, your worst one. If it's three times your usual volume, steer clear of per-conversation or per-ticket pricing, or budget for the next tier from day one.

Does your team need to act on orders?

Seeing the order is enough to answer. Editing or refunding it from the chat takes Gorgias or Zendesk. If you only answer questions, Crisp, Tidio or Inbox will do.

What will the AI say about an order?

An AI that invents a delivery status loses you a customer. Before switching it on, restrict it to FAQs and tracking, and review its answers during the first week.
  • Does the chat show the customer's order on your platform, on the plan you're considering?
  • What happens past the quota: a hard cap, a tier jump, or per-unit overage?
  • Do emails and social messages count toward the same quota?
  • Is AI included, and what does each extra answer cost?
  • Where are conversations hosted, and is a DPA available?
Tips

Pay less and dodge the traps

01

Test your product page before and after the widget

Mobile

Run Lighthouse on mobile before installing the chat, then after. If LCP (how long the largest element takes to render) goes past 2.5 seconds, enable lazy loading for the widget or try another tool. Some merchants find the Crisp widget slow to load, so check on your own store.

Target
LCP under 2.5 s
02

Filter calls and emails before Gorgias sees them

Gorgias

On Gorgias, a spam call with a voicemail becomes a billed ticket. Turn off channels you don't use and filter automated emails (notifications, receipts) before they hit the inbox.

FAQ

Questions store owners ask

  • What is the best free live chat for an online store?
Shopify Inbox if you're on Shopify: it sees the cart and orders with no conversation cap. On WooCommerce or PrestaShop, Crisp's free plan gives 2 seats plus the order connector. tawk.to is free with no limits, but shows no orders.
  • Do I need AI in my store's chat?
Not to start. Under 100 conversations a month, a person answers better than a bot. AI earns its keep when tracking questions swamp the team; even then, keep it to answers you've approved.
  • How much does ecommerce live chat cost?
From $0 to about $165 a month for a team of three. Free on Shopify Inbox and tawk.to, $25 on Smartsupp, $45 on Crisp, around $50 on Gorgias and Tidio, $165 on Zendesk. AI almost always costs extra.
  • Can live chat see the customer's order?
Yes with Shopify Inbox, Tidio, Gorgias, Zendesk and Crisp on Shopify, and with Crisp and Smartsupp on WooCommerce and PrestaShop. tawk.to doesn't. Only Gorgias and Zendesk let you refund from the conversation.
  • Will a chat widget slow down my store?
It can, especially on mobile. Run Lighthouse on a product page before and after, and keep LCP under 2.5 seconds. If the score drops, lazy-load the widget.
  • Gorgias or Zendesk for a Shopify store?
Gorgias for teams under about 15: it bills per ticket, not per seat, and refunds from the conversation. Zendesk beyond that, if you need advanced routing and reporting, at $55 per agent billed yearly.
  • Is Shopify Inbox enough for a growing store?
For one or two people, yes. Once you need searchable history, email in the same inbox, or work across several agents, it runs out of road. Crisp and Gorgias are the usual next steps.
