Best Ecommerce Platform for DTC Brands 2026

Stay on Shopify, upgrade to Plus, or replatform: six platforms compared for brands selling direct at $1M to $50M a year.

Short answer: if your brand sells direct to consumers (DTC) and does somewhere between $1M and $50M a year, Shopify Plus is the safest pick, as long as you have a concrete reason to pay $2,300 a month. Plenty of brands can stay on Shopify Advanced far longer than agencies suggest. BigCommerce is the strongest hosted alternative if you hate stacking apps and transaction fees. Swell fits subscription-first brands with developers, commercetools fits large multi-brand setups, and Shopware is the pick for brands with a heavy European and wholesale business. We compared all six on what actually matters once you're past the first million: the real monthly bill after card fees and apps, subscriptions, international selling, wholesale, and whether you can leave with your subscribers' cards.

How we compared

How we compared and scored

A $5M DTC brand doesn't pick a platform the way a new store does. It already has a site that converts, a customer list, often a subscriber base, sometimes a few wholesale accounts. The real question is whether a move pays back its cost and its risk. So for each platform we went through the official pricing of the tier that fits this revenue range, the per-order fees, the documentation on subscriptions, B2B and cross-border selling, and a large pile of merchant and agency feedback. Then we rebuilt the monthly bill for a sample brand doing $2M a year. Each platform gets a score on five weighted criteria. No placement on this page is paid.

1
Best overall for a scaling DTC brand

Shopify Plus

4.3/5

Shopify Plus is Shopify's enterprise tier, and for a DTC brand already on Shopify it's the shortest path up: same admin, same apps, same team habits, more features. Pricing starts at $2,300 a month on a one- or three-year term, and you can only cancel when the term expires. Shopify also says a variable platform fee may apply based on your revenue and business model, without publishing the threshold or the rate. Get it in writing before you sign.

You're paying for four things. Full checkout customization (other plans stay limited). Up to nine expansion stores included, handy for one store per region. Unlimited B2B catalogs with per-company pricing, where lower plans cap at three. And up to 25 headless storefronts (a custom front end, say in Next.js, running on Shopify), plus 200 inventory locations and unlimited staff accounts.

Run the full math. Take a brand doing $2M a year with a $60 average order: about 2,780 orders and $166,700 in sales a month. US online card rates on Plus start at 2.25% + 30¢, so that's roughly $3,750 plus $834, around $4,580 a month in card fees. Add the subscription and you're near $6,880 a month before a single app. Premium cards run 2.95% + 30¢, so check your real card mix.

Two things to know. Checkout customization now only goes through checkout extensions: the old checkout.liquid file is gone, and stores that never migrated were switched to the standard checkout. On the plus side, US-based brands get Shopify Managed Markets, where Global-e acts as merchant of record and handles duties and taxes abroad, for 3.25% per transaction on Plus (3.5% on lower plans) plus currency conversion. Shoppers see a mention that they're buying from Global-e at checkout.

Standout features
  • Fully customizable checkout through extensions
  • Up to 9 expansion stores included
  • Unlimited B2B catalogs with per-company pricing
  • Managed Markets at 3.25% for US-based brands
+Pros
  • ✓No replatforming if you're already on Shopify
  • ✓Your marketing team stays autonomous day to day
  • ✓A much larger app store than the alternatives here
−Cons
  • ✗$2,300/mo minimum on a 1- or 3-year term
  • ✗Unpublished variable fee based on revenue
  • ✗Saved subscriber cards don't export if you leave Shopify Payments
Verdict

The best pick for a scaling DTC brand, if you can name the Plus feature you'll ship within 90 days. If you can't, stay on Advanced and put that $2,300 into acquisition. Only take the three-year term if your three-year plan is solid.

Best if you stay on Shopify without Plus

Shopify Advanced

4.2/5

Most "best platform for DTC" lists skip this option, and they shouldn't. For a lot of brands between $1M and $5M, the right move is not moving. Shopify Advanced costs $399 a month, or $299 billed yearly, roughly eight times less than Plus, on the same platform and the same app store.

The wholesale argument for Plus is weaker in 2026 too. Shopify opened its native B2B features to Basic, Grow and Advanced, with up to three price catalogs. If you sell to a handful of retailers at a wholesale price, that often covers it. Plus only becomes necessary when you need many company-specific catalogs or finer terms.

Subscriptions also work without Plus. The free Shopify Subscriptions app handles the simple cases: weekly, monthly or yearly deliveries, pause, skip and a customer portal. Users rate it 3.8 out of 5, with 163 one-star reviews out of 878, so read the recent critical ones to see if they hit your use case. For richer rules, paid apps like Recharge take over, with per-order fees (see the guide below).

The trigger for Plus isn't a revenue number. It's the day a Plus feature earns you more than the price gap, roughly $2,000 a month. A checkout change that lifts conversion, a store per region that opens a market, a wholesale portal. Until you can name one, Advanced does the job.

Standout features
  • $299/mo billed yearly
  • Native B2B since 2026, up to 3 catalogs
  • Simple subscriptions with the free Shopify Subscriptions app
  • Same app store as Plus
+Pros
  • ✓Best cost-to-features ratio between $1M and $5M
  • ✓No migration, no multi-year term
  • ✓Upgrade to Plus the day the need is real
−Cons
  • ✗Limited checkout customization
  • ✗One store, no included expansion stores
  • ✗Shopify Payments subscriber cards don't export
Verdict

The most profitable choice for a DTC brand without a concrete Plus need yet. List what Plus would give you, put a dollar figure on it, and only move if it beats the price gap.

3
Best hosted alternative without platform fees

BigCommerce

4.0/5

BigCommerce is Shopify's best-known hosted rival in the US, and for a growing DTC brand it's the most realistic alternative to Plus. The key rule: once your trailing 12-month sales reach $2M, your account automatically moves to the Performance offer, which starts at $1,499 a month billed yearly. So in this revenue range you end up on a negotiated contract, much like Plus, but from a lower starting point.

The money argument is real. With an integrated payment processor, BigCommerce charges no platform fee on your sales. With a non-integrated one, it takes 2%, 1% or 0.6% depending on plan, and Scale adds 0.9% on sales above $33,333 a month. Online card rates start at 2.89% + 29¢. Pick your processor before you pick your plan.

BigCommerce also ships features Shopify often leaves to apps, including B2B price lists on Performance. For a brand juggling thousands of SKUs with lots of variants, that means a shorter list of monthly app bills.

The catch is ecosystem depth. There are fewer DTC-focused apps, agencies and freelancers than on Shopify. If you plan to hire fast or switch agencies, factor that in.

Standout features
  • No platform fee with an integrated processor
  • B2B price lists on Performance
  • Strong native catalog features
  • Performance from $1,499/mo billed yearly
+Pros
  • ✓Less app-dependent than Shopify
  • ✓Good fit for large, variant-heavy catalogs
  • ✓Lower starting price than Plus at this revenue level
−Cons
  • ✗Automatic move to Performance at $2M trailing sales
  • ✗2% to 0.6% fee with a non-integrated processor
  • ✗Smaller DTC app and agency ecosystem
Verdict

The strongest hosted alternative to Plus, especially for large catalogs. Model your trailing 12-month sales, stay on an integrated processor, and check that the apps your marketing team relies on exist here.

4
Best for DTC brands with heavy EU wholesale

Shopware

4.0/5

Shopware is a German platform priced in euros, and in the US it's rarely on DTC shortlists. It earns its spot here for brands with a large European business or heavy wholesale. Evolve, from €2,400 a month, includes B2B components Shopify reserves for Plus or leaves to apps: quotes, purchasing approvals, order lists and individual pricing. Rise starts at €600 a month, and pricing also scales with your sales volume.

The Community Edition is free and open source, with one catch: above €1M in sales over 365 days, you need a paid plan to keep access to your Shopware account. In this revenue range, plan on paying.

Merchants know the downsides. You need an agency or developers, and Shopware 6 updates regularly break stores when they're run without preparation. Several plugins moved from one-time purchases to monthly rentals. On the other hand, EU compliance is native, where a Shopify store selling into Germany often relies on paid apps.

Our tip: check every plugin's compatibility before an update, test on a staging copy, and price the full migration (agency, data, design) before comparing subscriptions.

Standout features
  • Quotes, purchasing approvals and individual pricing on Evolve
  • Open code: you own your store
  • Built for EU languages, taxes and legal requirements
  • Free Community Edition
+Pros
  • ✓Native B2B depth where Shopify needs Plus or apps
  • ✓Freedom over code and hosting
  • ✓Strong fit for brands selling across the EU
−Cons
  • ✗Agency or dev team required
  • ✗Updates need preparation, some plugins are rentals
  • ✗Thin US agency and DTC app ecosystem
Verdict

A serious option if Europe and wholesale are big parts of your business. For a US-centric, mostly direct brand, the migration rarely pays back.

5
Best for subscription-first brands going headless

Swell

3.8/5

Swell is a headless platform: it runs the catalog, cart, orders and customers, and your team builds the storefront on top in whatever stack it likes. What makes it interesting for DTC is that subscriptions are built in on every plan, with no third-party subscription app and no extra per-order subscription fee.

It's also one of the few headless platforms with public pricing. Standard is $299 a month up to $1M in yearly sales, with 1% above that. Unlimited is $2,250 a month up to $5M, with 0.4% above. Custom pricing kicks in over $10M. Those are yearly-billing prices (monthly billing is available at a higher rate), and API overages cost $5 per 100,000 requests.

Compare it to Shopify plus a subscription app. A brand billing $40,000 a month in subscriptions (1,000 orders at $40) pays about $885 a month on Recharge Starter: $99 base, $596 in revenue share, $190 in per-order fees. On Swell that line disappears, but you're paying for a custom storefront and the people who maintain it.

The limit is clear. Swell is a smaller player with a thin integration ecosystem, and your marketing team needs a developer to change a page. No dev team, no Swell.

Standout features
  • Subscriptions included on every plan
  • Public pricing, even for headless
  • Unlimited products on every plan
  • Build the front end in any stack
+Pros
  • ✓No per-order subscription app fees
  • ✓Readable pricing up to $10M
  • ✓Full freedom on the storefront
−Cons
  • ✗Needs a developer to run the site
  • ✗Small integration ecosystem
  • ✗Listed prices assume yearly billing
Verdict

The right call for a subscription brand with a dev team that wants out of per-order subscription fees. Without developers, stay on Shopify with a subscription app.

6
Best for a composable setup above $20M

commercetools

3.7/5

commercetools is a composable platform: instead of a ready-made store, you assemble building blocks (catalog, cart, checkout, B2B) connected by API to the rest of your systems. It's aimed at large brands that want full control of their architecture.

There's no public price. The model is based on order volume rather than GMV, which favors brands with a high average order value. Add-ons cover checkout, B2B APIs and hosting regions. The real budget sits elsewhere: a specialist integrator and the team that keeps everything running. Expect a yearly spend in the tens of thousands of dollars at a minimum, and much more once integration is counted.

For a $3M brand, it's almost always overkill. Shopify Plus already includes 25 headless storefronts, so if all you want is a fast Next.js site, you don't need a composable stack. commercetools starts to make sense past $20M, when several brands, regions and an ERP have to work together.

Standout features
  • Independent API-first building blocks
  • Priced per order, not per dollar of sales
  • Checkout and B2B APIs as add-ons
  • Free trial, buy through AWS or Google Cloud
+Pros
  • ✓Maximum architectural freedom
  • ✓Built for very high volumes
  • ✓No cut of your revenue
−Cons
  • ✗No public pricing
  • ✗Needs an in-house tech team and an integrator
  • ✗Marketing loses day-to-day autonomy
Verdict

The pick for large multi-region brands with a real engineering team. Below $20M, Shopify Plus and its headless storefronts cover the same need for far less.

How to choose without a bad replatform

A DTC brand doesn't replatform for fun. Answer three questions before any sales call. Which specific feature are you missing, and what would it earn? What does the full migration cost, design and subscriber migration included? Who on your team edits a product page on launch day? Also look at the tools around the store: ecommerce email marketing, your ecommerce CRM and live chat often cost more than the platform itself. If you're just launching, our list of platforms for small stores is a better fit.

You're at $1M to $5M, 100% direct

Stay on Shopify Advanced at $299 a month billed yearly. Move to Plus the day one specific feature earns more than about $2,000 a month. For subscriptions, start with the free Shopify Subscriptions app.

Wholesale is a big part of revenue

Up to three price catalogs, Shopify Advanced covers it since 2026. Beyond that, compare Shopify Plus (unlimited catalogs), BigCommerce Performance (B2B price lists) and, if you're EU-heavy, Shopware Evolve.

Subscriptions are the business

Price your subscription app. Recharge Starter costs $99 a month plus 1.49% + 19¢ per order, Recharge Plus $499 plus 1.34% + 19¢ on a 12-month term. Recharge Plus beats Starter above roughly $267,000 a month in subscription revenue. With developers, Swell includes subscriptions with no per-order fee.

You're past $20M with several regions and an ERP

Shopify Plus is still the simplest. commercetools, Salesforce Commerce Cloud and Adobe Commerce target this level, all quote-only, with big integration budgets and reliance on certified developers. Only look at them with an in-house tech team.
  • Name the specific feature that justifies the move, and put a dollar figure on it.
  • Ask for the variable platform fee in writing before signing Plus.
  • Model card fees with your real mix of standard, premium and international cards.
  • Check how subscriber cards leave the platform the day you move.
  • Before each app, read recent critical reviews and make sure billing runs through the platform.
  • Don't pay for a composable stack just to get a fast site: Plus already includes 25 headless storefronts.
FAQ · 8 questions

Best ecommerce platform for DTC brands · FAQ

  • When should a DTC brand move from Shopify to Shopify Plus?
When a Plus-only feature earns more than the price gap, about $2,000 a month over Advanced. Revenue alone isn't the trigger. Typical reasons are a custom checkout that lifts conversion, a store per region, or per-company wholesale pricing. A useful test: if you can't name the Plus feature you'll ship in the next 90 days, wait.
  • How much does Shopify Plus really cost?
It starts at $2,300 a month on a one- or three-year term. Shopify says a variable platform fee may apply based on revenue and business model, without publishing the threshold. Card fees come on top: from 2.25% + 30¢ online in the US, 2.95% + 30¢ for premium cards. For a $2M brand with a $60 average order, card fees alone run around $4,580 a month.
  • Is BigCommerce better than Shopify for DTC?
It's better if you want native catalog features and no platform fees, worse if you depend on Shopify's app ecosystem. BigCommerce charges nothing on sales with an integrated processor and moves you to Performance (from $1,499 a month billed yearly) at $2M in trailing sales. Shopify has more DTC apps, agencies and talent.
  • What's the best platform for a subscription brand?
On Shopify, start with the free Shopify Subscriptions app and move to Recharge when you need richer rules ($99 a month plus 1.49% + 19¢ per order on Starter). Swell includes subscriptions on every plan but needs a custom storefront. Whatever you choose, ask how saved cards move if you leave: Shopify Payments cards don't export.
  • Is headless commerce worth it for a DTC brand?
Rarely below $10M to $20M. Headless separates the storefront from the platform: more speed and freedom, but a developer for every change. Shopify Plus already includes up to 25 headless storefronts, so you don't need commercetools for a fast Next.js site. Composable stacks pay off with several brands, regions and an ERP.
  • Can I run wholesale and DTC on the same Shopify store?
Yes. Since 2026, Shopify's native B2B features are on Basic, Grow and Advanced, with up to three price catalogs. Plus unlocks unlimited catalogs assigned company by company. BigCommerce offers B2B price lists on Performance, and Shopware Evolve adds quotes and purchasing approvals.
  • How do US DTC brands handle international duties and taxes?
US-based brands on Shopify can use Managed Markets, where Global-e acts as merchant of record and handles duties and taxes abroad, for 3.25% per transaction on Plus or 3.5% on lower plans, plus currency conversion. The checkout shows a required mention that the shopper buys from Global-e. The service is limited to businesses based in the continental US and some in Canada and the UK.
  • Is WooCommerce a good fit for a DTC brand doing $5M?
Only if content is your growth engine and you have a WordPress team in-house. WooCommerce is free, but hosting runs $25 to $350 a month and paid extensions $29 to $299 a year each, and subscriptions need a paid extension costing a few hundred dollars a year. At $5M, the real cost is the people maintaining it.
