What's the best subscription app for ecommerce in 2026?

The one whose fees stay small next to your recurring revenue, and that wins back declined cards before the subscriber churns. On $10,000 a month in subscription sales, the bill runs from $0 to $749.

A subscription app turns a product in your store into a repeat purchase: the monthly box, the coffee that ships every three weeks, the supplement customers reorder with a subscribe-and-save discount. It adds the subscribe option to your product page, charges the saved card on each renewal, and gives the customer a portal to skip, swap or cancel.

The short answer: Recharge is still the most complete option for an established Shopify brand. Loop gets you most of the way there for lower fees. Appstle and Seal take no cut of your sales and fit most small stores. Skio, now owned by Recharge, and Stay AI are built for high-volume brands. The native Shopify Subscriptions app is free but basic. On WordPress, it's WooCommerce Subscriptions.

Every number on this page assumes a store billing $10,000 in subscriptions a month across 250 orders at $40. At that level, the gap between two apps is often bigger than their plan price.

How we compared and scored

Most of the top results for this search are written by the app vendors themselves, and each one ranks its own product first. The rest quote stale pricing (Recharge at 1.25% is gone) and stop at the "from" price. None of them works out what an app takes from real revenue, almost none mention that Recharge now owns Skio, and the Shop Pay card-update problem never comes up. If you run WooCommerce, you don't exist in those lists.

We compared official pricing pages, gateway compatibility docs and migration guides, then read merchants' one-star reviews and Shopify Community threads. Every price is converted into a monthly bill for a store doing $10,000 a month in subscriptions. Bold Subscriptions isn't ranked: its entry plan charges 2% per transaction, and several merchants describe a botched move to its new version, with double charges and broken subscriptions.

Value for money and feature depth carry the most weight. A subscription app proves itself on the sixth invoice, and on how many subscribers it keeps when their card expires.

1
Most complete

Recharge

4.5/5

Recharge is the original Shopify subscription app, around since 2014, and still the default pick for established brands. It's the deepest app in this ranking: a no-code customer portal, cancellation-prevention offers, upsells at renewal, analytics benchmarked against other brands, and failed payment recovery on Starter. It also runs on BigCommerce, which most rivals don't.

Pricing needs a calculator. The $25/mo entry offer skips transaction fees for your first 50 subscribers, which is a fair way to start. Starter is $99/mo plus 1.49% and 19¢ per transaction. On $10,000 across 250 orders, that's $295.50 a month, three times the sticker price. Plus, at $499, drops the rate to 1.34% and adds guided setup, bundles, SMS, loyalty and referrals, and a JavaScript SDK. Rates go down further with volume. Many comparison posts still show the old 1.25% grid.

What the one-star reviews say: slow support, a chat that pushes you to email, price increases, and an app that's hard to leave. One merchant describes an update that picked the wrong shipping profile and charged shipping to about 800 subscribers. Others say some decline codes slip past automatic recovery.

Skio, the other big name in this space, now belongs to Recharge. The two apps are still separate products for now. If you pick one to avoid the other, you're staying with the same company.

Standout features
  • Failed payment recovery from Starter
  • Also runs on BigCommerce
  • 60-day free trial
+Pros
  • ✓Deepest feature set in the ranking
  • ✓No-code portal out of the box
  • ✓$25 offer with no fees for 50 subscribers
−Cons
  • ✗1.49% + 19¢ per order on Starter
  • ✗Slow support in reviews
  • ✗Hard to migrate away from
Verdict

The right call when subscriptions are already a big slice of your revenue and you want everything in one place. Under $5,000 a month in recurring sales, Appstle or Loop will cost you less for the same basics.

Best features for the fees

Loop Subscriptions

4.4/5

Loop goes straight after Recharge with a simple pitch: the same core features for less. The free plan handles 50 active subscriptions with a mobile portal. Starter, at $99/mo plus 1% of sales and no per-order fee, adds a branded portal and smart dunning with up to 15 retry attempts. Pro, at $399 plus 0.75%, unlocks portal themes and sections.

On our sample store, Starter comes to $199 a month, about $100 less than Recharge Starter. The gap is the fixed fee: Loop doesn't charge one, Recharge adds 19¢ to every order. The smaller your average order, the more that matters.

Loop's real edge is migration. Paid plans include a white-glove move, including from Recharge, with a documented process. Switching subscription apps is never one click: your subscribers have saved cards, billing dates and discounts. An app that does that work for you saves dozens of hours.

The catch: Loop is Shopify-only, and the official listing only spells out advanced dunning on Starter. Check what the free and Pro plans include before you count on it.

Standout features
  • No per-order fixed fee
  • Up to 15 payment retries
  • Migration from Recharge included
+Pros
  • ✓$199 on $10K, versus $295.50 at Recharge
  • ✓Free plan up to 50 subscriptions
  • ✓White-glove migration on paid plans
−Cons
  • ✗Shopify only
  • ✗1% of sales from Starter
  • ✗Advanced dunning only confirmed on Starter
Verdict

The best Recharge alternative once you pass $5,000 a month in recurring sales. If you're leaving Recharge, ask for the migration before you sign: that's where Loop earns its spot.

3
Best with no revenue share

Appstle Subscriptions

4.3/5

Appstle flips the Recharge model: no percentage on paid plans, and a flat price tied to your subscription revenue. Free covers $500 a month, Starter is $10 up to $5,000, Business $30 up to $15,000, Business Premium $100 up to $100,000. Paying yearly brings Business down to $288, or $24 a month.

On our sample store, the bill is $30 a month, a tenth of Recharge Starter. The basics are all there: payment retries even on Free, a passwordless portal from Starter, and an advanced portal with bulk actions on Business. Appstle advertises round-the-clock human support, and plenty of reviews back that up.

The trap is the tiers. Go over your plan's revenue cap and Appstle locks your subscriber list until you upgrade. Several merchants found out on a peak sales day. One-star reviews also flag paid webhooks and Shop Pay cards subscribers can't update, an issue every app on Shopify shares.

Tip: size your tier on your biggest month of the year, not your average. Going from Business to Business Premium takes the bill from $30 to $100.

Standout features
  • 0% fees on paid plans
  • Payment retries even on Free
  • 24/7 human support advertised
+Pros
  • ✓$30 a month on $10K
  • ✓Cheaper billed yearly
  • ✓Passwordless portal from $10
−Cons
  • ✗Subscriber list locked when you exceed your tier
  • ✗Free plan fees not spelled out
  • ✗Shopify only
Verdict

The best pick for most Shopify stores under $15,000 a month in subscriptions. Check your tier before Black Friday or a big launch.

Best on a budget

Seal Subscriptions

4.2/5

Seal is the cheapest app in this ranking at low volume. The free plan covers 50 subscriptions with no revenue share. Above that, you pay by subscription count: $5.95 a month for 100, $9.95 for 250, $24.95 for 500. No plan takes a cut of your sales. Our sample store, with 250 orders a month, fits in Legend at $24.95.

Its hidden strength is payments. Seal auto-charges through Shopify Payments, Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Stripe, Adyen, Authorize.net and PayPal Express. If your gateway isn't on that list, Seal offers recurring invoices: on each renewal, the customer gets an email with a payment link and pays however they like. It's less automatic, but it's the only easy way out when your processor doesn't support subscriptions.

What the low-star reviews say: support in a different time zone (the company is based in Slovenia), a confusing interface at first, and one merchant whose retry setting created multiple charges and a chargeback. By default, Seal retries a failed payment three times, one day apart, then cancels.

Tip: widen the retry interval. An account that's empty on the 28th usually isn't on the 2nd. Some roundups claim 150 free subscriptions: the official listing says 50.

Standout features
  • Free up to 50 subscriptions
  • Recurring invoices for any gateway
  • 0% fees on every plan
+Pros
  • ✓$24.95 a month for 500 subscriptions
  • ✓Passwordless portal from Supersale
  • ✓Widest gateway list
−Cons
  • ✗Default retries too short: 3 tries in 3 days
  • ✗Time-zone gap with support
  • ✗Fewer retention tools than Recharge or Loop
Verdict

The best low-risk way to launch a first subscription, and the only simple answer when your gateway can't auto-charge. Fix the retry settings on day one.

Best subscriber experience

Skio

4.1/5

Skio built its name with brands that live on subscriptions: passwordless login to the customer portal, quick actions by text or email (skip, reschedule, add a product in one tap), and what it calls smart payment recovery. Merchants who picked it mostly praise the subscriber experience.

The price keeps it for big players. Scale is $599 a month, or $5,988 a year, plus 1% and 20¢ per transaction. On our sample store, that's $749 a month, the highest bill in this ranking. You need recurring revenue well past $10,000 for the retention features to cover the gap.

What to know before you sign: Skio now belongs to Recharge, and its listing now says so. For now the two products stay separate, each with its own pricing. Nobody outside the company knows yet whether they'll merge, whether one will absorb the other, or whether prices will move. If you choose Skio to get away from Recharge, you're staying with the same group.

Skio is Shopify-only, and like every app here it runs into Shop Pay cards that subscribers can't update themselves.

Standout features
  • Passwordless portal login
  • Quick actions by text and email
  • Now owned by Recharge
+Pros
  • ✓Smoothest subscriber experience
  • ✓Built-in payment recovery
  • ✓17% off billed yearly
−Cons
  • ✗$749 a month on $10K
  • ✗Product roadmap now tied to Recharge
  • ✗Shopify only
Verdict

A great app for a brand that lives on subscriptions and bills far more than $10,000 a month. Otherwise, Loop gives you the essentials for less than half the price, without betting on Recharge's plans.

Best done-for-you onboarding

Stay AI

3.9/5

Stay AI sells itself as the subscription app for brands that want to be guided. There's one plan: $499 a month plus 1% and 19¢ per transaction, with a 30-day trial. It includes a no-code portal, retention and forecasting engines, plus onboarding and migration support.

On our sample store, that's $646.50 a month. Like Skio, it only makes sense once subscriptions bring in a lot more than $10,000 a month, and once your team has time to act on what the retention tools surface.

Most reviews are very positive. The one-star review worth reading says the support promised during the sale didn't show up after install. Before you sign, get the onboarding plan in writing: who does the migration, by when, and who you talk to afterward.

Stay AI is Shopify-only and faces the same Shop Pay card-update issue as everyone else.

Standout features
  • Single all-inclusive plan
  • Retention and forecasting engines
  • Migration and onboarding included
+Pros
  • ✓Hands-on help built into the price
  • ✓No-code portal
  • ✓30-day trial
−Cons
  • ✗$646.50 a month on $10K
  • ✗Onboarding promises to pin down in writing
  • ✗Shopify only
Verdict

Worth a demo if you're a large brand weighing Skio or Recharge Plus. For everyone else, the base fee alone costs more than Loop Starter all-in.

Best free option

Shopify Subscriptions

3.8/5

Shopify has its own free subscription app. It covers the basics: weekly, monthly or yearly renewals, a subscription discount, physical and digital products, and POS sales. Customers can pause, skip or cancel from their account, and update their card and address there. You can also transfer existing contracts into it.

The limits come fast. Customers can't change their billing date or swap one product for another: they have to cancel and resubscribe. You can't put all subscribers on a shared billing date either, which hurts boxes that ship on the same day. One-star reviews also mention a "Variant can only be purchased with a selling plan" error that blocks checkout, and a widget that flips one-time purchases to subscriptions on its own.

Another common complaint: customers grab the subscription discount, then cancel after the first order. The app has no minimum-commitment rule.

Tip: start here to test demand. Once more than a few dozen customers subscribe, move to Appstle or Seal, which can pick up Shopify-stored cards without customers re-entering them.

Standout features
  • Free
  • Pause, skip and cancel from the customer account
  • Works in POS
+Pros
  • ✓No app cost
  • ✓Set up in minutes
  • ✓Cards stored by Shopify, easier to migrate later
−Cons
  • ✗No product swaps or billing-date changes
  • ✗No shared billing date for boxes
  • ✗Discount abuse with no minimum commitment
Verdict

Perfect for testing subscriptions without spending a dollar. The moment you sell a fixed-date box or customers want to swap products, you need a real app.

Best for WordPress

WooCommerce Subscriptions

3.7/5

On WordPress, the official extension is WooCommerce Subscriptions. It's $279 a year for one site with no percentage on sales, about $23 a month for our sample store. A lot of posts still quote $199: that's the old price.

It handles automatic renewals with 25+ gateways, including WooPayments, Stripe, PayPal and Braintree, and manual renewals with everything else. Automatic failed-payment retries exist, with an email to the customer, but you have to switch them on, and they only apply to failures after you do. Subscribers manage everything from My Account: switch plans, change payment method or address, suspend, cancel.

The flip side is maintenance. You host it and you own the updates. Merchants have seen Stripe renewals stuck on "pending" after a Stripe plugin update detached the payment token from the subscription. You also need recent versions of WordPress, WooCommerce and PHP.

Tip: after every gateway update, check the next day that renewals actually went through as paid. Turn on retries when you install, not after the first failed charge.

Standout features
  • No revenue share
  • Automatic renewals with 25+ gateways
  • Full self-service in My Account
+Pros
  • ✓$279 a year at any volume
  • ✓Your data stays on your site
  • ✓30-day refund
−Cons
  • ✗Payment retries off until you enable them
  • ✗Renewals can break after a gateway update
  • ✗Hosting and updates are on you
Verdict

The obvious pick if your store runs on WooCommerce and someone keeps an eye on updates. The flat fee becomes unbeatable as recurring revenue grows.

Real cost

What your subscription app really costs, and where you lose subscribers

Three questions matter more than the feature list: what the app takes from your revenue, how many subscribers you lose to declined cards, and whether you can leave when it stops fitting.

All-in cost on your revenue

On $10,000 a month across 250 orders of $40: Shopify Subscriptions $0, WooCommerce Subscriptions about $23, Seal $24.95, Appstle $30, Loop $199, Recharge $295.50, Stay AI $646.50, Skio $749. Payment processing comes on top everywhere. Rerun the math with your own average order: fixed per-order fees at Recharge, Skio and Stay AI hit small baskets hardest.

Involuntary churn

An expired card or an empty account loses you a subscriber who never meant to leave. Every app here retries, but not the same way: Loop goes up to 15 attempts on Starter, Seal stops after 3 tries in 3 days by default, WooCommerce needs retries switched on. Cards saved through Shop Pay are a separate headache: subscribers can't update them themselves.

The exit

Leaving an app means moving cards, billing dates and discounts. When cards are stored by Shopify, as with Appstle, Seal or the native app, it's simpler. Loop, Seal and Appstle offer to migrate you from another app. Still, one Shopify Community merchant estimated about 100 hours of developer time for a complex case.
  • Work out your bill on real recurring revenue: plan + percentage + fixed fee × orders.
  • Confirm your payment gateway supports subscriptions before installing anything.
  • Set up failed-payment retries on install day.
  • Size Appstle or Seal tiers on your peak month.
  • Make sure subscribers can cancel online in a few clicks, without contacting support.
  • Ask the new app whether it handles migration before you sign.
Retention tips

Six settings that keep subscribers

Long-time subscription merchants lose more subscribers to payment and setup problems than to people who actually want out. Here's what keeps coming up in merchant forums, whatever app you run.

01

Stretch your retry schedule

Failed payments

Three tries in three days is too short. Spread attempts over one to two weeks, and match them to the decline reason: insufficient funds often clears after payday, an expired card never fixes itself. Send an update-your-card link with every failure, and track lost revenue each month.

Seal default
3 tries, 1 day apart
02

Plan for the Shop Pay card trap

Gotcha

A subscriber who paid with Shop Pay can't update their saved card, and it hits Skio, Appstle, Recharge and Seal alike. Shopify and the apps point at each other. Merchants' workarounds: call the customer, or rebuild the subscription with another payment method. Write that path into your dunning email.

Apps affected
Every Shopify app in this ranking
03

Check your gateway before the app

Payments

On Shopify, subscriptions only work with certain gateways: Shopify Payments, PayPal Express, Authorize.net, Adyen, and Stripe for some merchants. Local methods like Klarna or iDEAL are excluded for subscription purchases. If yours isn't supported, Seal's recurring invoices are the fallback.

Safest choice
Shopify Payments
04

Protect your subscribe-and-save discount

Abuse

It happens a lot: a customer takes the subscriber discount, gets the order, then cancels. Look for a minimum number of orders before cancellation and confirm it in a demo, since not every app has one and Shopify's native app doesn't. Failing that, apply the discount from the second order instead of the first.

Minimum merchants ask for
2 orders
05

Warn before the card expires

Retention

An expiring card is a subscriber lost by accident. Send a reminder a month before expiry with a direct link to the portal. On the gateway side, ask whether Visa and Mastercard automatic card updates are active on your account: they swap in the new card without the customer doing anything.

Suggested reminder
1 month before expiry
06

Offer pause before cancel

Retention

Many subscribers just want a month off. Put pause and skip on the way to the cancel button, never in place of it: hiding cancellation earns you chargebacks and complaints. Recharge includes cancellation-prevention offers from Starter; the native Shopify app offers pause and skip from the customer account.

Rule of thumb
Pause first, cancel always visible
FAQ · 8 questions

Ecommerce subscription app · FAQ

  • What is the best subscription app for Shopify?
Recharge for an established brand that wants every feature, Appstle for most small stores. On $10,000 a month in subscriptions, Recharge Starter costs $295.50 all-in and Appstle $30. In between, Loop gives you advanced dunning and a free migration for $199.
  • What is the cheapest Shopify subscription app with no transaction fees?
Seal and Appstle. Seal is free up to 50 subscriptions and $24.95 a month for 500, with 0% fees on every plan. Appstle is free up to $500 a month in subscription revenue, then $10 or $30 with 0% fees on paid plans. Shopify Subscriptions is free too, but much more limited.
  • Is the native Shopify Subscriptions app good enough?
For testing a first subscription, yes. It handles pause, skip and cancel from the customer account. It can't swap products, change billing dates or put every subscriber on one shipping date, so a subscription box outgrows it quickly.
  • Recharge, Loop or Skio: which one should I pick?
Recharge if you want the deepest feature set and BigCommerce support. Loop if you want similar depth with no per-order fee and a free migration from Recharge. Skio if subscriptions drive most of your revenue and you'll pay $599 a month for the smoothest portal, knowing Recharge now owns it.
  • Can I switch subscription apps without losing subscribers?
Yes, but never in one click. Cards, billing dates and discounts have to move. Loop, Seal and Appstle offer migration from other apps: ask for it before you sign. With Loop, install the app and take it live before importing subscribers.
  • Is WooCommerce or Shopify better for subscriptions?
Shopify has far more subscription apps and handles card storage for you. WooCommerce Subscriptions costs $279 a year with no revenue share, which wins on cost at high volume, but you own hosting and updates, and a gateway update can stall renewals.
  • Why do subscription payments fail, and how do I recover them?
Mostly expired cards and insufficient funds. Retry over one to two weeks, send an update-your-card link on every failure, and warn customers before their card expires. Ask your gateway about automatic card updates. Shop Pay cards can't be updated by the subscriber, so plan a manual fallback.
  • What if my payment gateway doesn't support subscriptions?
Use Seal's recurring invoices: the customer gets a payment link by email at each renewal. The cleaner fix is switching to Shopify Payments, which every subscription app supports, or to PayPal Express, Authorize.net or Adyen.
